£13.5M RENOVATION COMPLETE AT GRAND PALLADIUM LADY HAMILTON Palladium Hotel Group is continuing the upgrade of its luxury resorts across the Caribbean with the completion of a six month renovation project at Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton Resort & Spa, located on Jamaica’s northern coast in Montego Bay. Following a £13.5 million investment by the Spanish hotel group, the five star property is now fully open with refurbished rooms and suites, a renovated restaurant and a revamped beach area. The recent developments form part of a wider project by Palladium Hotel Group that is seeing a series of facelifts at its other Caribbean resorts, in Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
HOLIDAY INN RESORT PROPERTY OPENS IN
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS
All Junior Suites, One Bedroom Suites and Honeymoon Villa Suites have been redesigned and refurbished in the colonial style that prevails throughout the Caribbean resort, transporting guests back to times gone by while maintaining the essence of today’s Jamaica and without sacrificing modern comforts. New details include ivory cream marble floors, luxurious bathrooms, brass light fixtures and elegant walnut furniture. Yellow jungle motifs combined with elegant touches of black in the updated décor add a typically Jamaican touch, with ethnic-styled Arte Internacional wallpaper that makes reference to the hotel’s Jamaican roots. New decorative items include period maps of the country and bright illustrations of local wildlife and plants. The new bathrooms feature London Underground tiling in a nod to the British influence in Jamaica through the country’s history. Indian-themed Bhogali, one of the resort’s seven à la carte restaurants, has reopened after a full renovation, meaning guests can once again enjoy traditional spiced dishes from the open-air restaurant.

BRINTONS SUPPORTING THE
‘FUTURE OF DESIGN’ AT JFS Brintons Carpets collaborated with Birmingham City University at this year’s prestigious January Furniture Show. Attended by over 16,000 buyers and 4,000 exhibitors, the four-day show at Birmingham’s NEC arena depicts the latest interior and furniture trends for the coming year.
BA Textile Design students from Birmingham City University used Brintons’ latest technologies to create two carpet designs, depicting how key interiors trends can be transformed into physical products and designs. The students showcased their latest work at the show as part of their final year trend project. Currently in its eighth year, the project encourages students to create a range of designs inspired by industry trends. The project focuses
upon the power of collaboration within different disciplines, joining science, technology, design and art together with renowned brands such as Brintons. Charmaine Stint, Programme Manager for the Institute for Creative Innovation at Birmingham City University, said: “Challenging our students, staff and partners to come up with brand new concepts which are fresh, engaging and new, generates some truly innovative content. It’s this innovation which drives us and our partners to push the boundaries and is one of the most motivating elements of this showcase.” As part of the project, each year students unravel two future trends, creating a portolio of moodboards and a final project. Influenced by Colourhive’s Autumn / Winter
2016/17 forecasts, this year’s project was inspired by two trends: ‘Strata’ and ‘Play.’ Inspired by the Natural World and its significance with the everyday, ‘Strata’ focuses upon the importance of geology and the unrefined beauty of the earth. Student Rosie Williams’ monochrome room set simultaneously explores human influence on nature. Student Chloe Baker’s ‘Play’ vibrant room set focuses upon the creativity and optimism possessed by our inner child.
GREAT BRITISH MENU CHEF OPENS DESSERT-THEMED B&B IN PADSTOW
As a chef, Paul has quite the pedigree, working for Gordon Ramsey, Gary Rhodes and Marcus Wareing. In addition to recent TV appearances he in 2011 he appeared
During the 16-month project, Paul and his wife Emma worked with interior designer Eve CullenCornes, design director at Jonathan Cornes Associates, to create the six bedrooms, each significantly different from the next. “Our intention from the start was to create a truly unique and welcoming
experience for our guests,” explains Paul. “We loved the idea of sweetthemed bedrooms. It started as a play on the word suite/ sweet, but quickly became the foundation of the design process. So for example, the Toffee Apple suite has warm caramel colours and a botanical theme. Eve discovered beautifully restored furniture and lamps, plus a retro line of botanical plates for the wall and beautiful botanical illustrations of fruits to highlight the hand buttoned head board. “Our Rhubarb and Custard suite is an eclectic collection of textures, including red and orange velvet, to represent the sweet and sour of rhubarb and custard. Eve managed to source these amazing cracked leather sofas in a deep, almost blood red, that are perfect for the room.”

One of the country’s finest chefs, Paul Ainsworth of the Michelinstarred restaurant Number 6 in Padstow has now extended his offering to include accommodation, opening six exquisitely designed suites in a newly renovated Georgian townhouse, just a stone’s throw from his restaurant.
on the BBC2 TV series Great British Menu, competing against the country’s top chefs. A finalist in the cookery contest, he won the dessert round for his offering, Taste of the Fairground. Taking inspiration from his dessert, the six bedrooms are named after fairground treats and retro sweets. Guests at the Padstow Townhouse can stay in Marshmallow, Popcorn, Rhubarb and Custard, Toffee Apple, Honeycomb or Bonbon.

The Belfry: Leading the way in British Ho
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
Sitting proudly amongst over 500 acres of West Midlands countryside, is England’s Leading Resort (World Travel Awards 2015), The Belfry Hotel & Resort.
12
The Belfry has been synonymous with golf ever since it held its first Ryder Cup in 1985 and has written itself into golf folk law having gone on to host the infamous biannual event a record four times. The resort boasts three spectacular courses and a golf academy, but on a recent visit we were just as taken back by the facilities and service away from the hallowed greens. Just 20 minutes from Birmingham city centre, The Belfry is perfectly positioned at the heart of the country attracting guests from all over the British Isles. Upon arrival to the resort you are welcomed by a smiling concierge in top and tails and the smiles do not stop at the door as the level of service is exemplarily throughout the resort. After checking in we were shown to our signature room, one of 319 in the resort.
Spacious and full of the amenities you would expect in a luxury resort, the room was a lovely base from which to explore the West Midlands retreat. Our exploring started in the Hotel’s main bar, the Brabazon bar, where we were served a delightful champagne afternoon tea. A range of finger sandwiches, scones and freshly baked pastries were beautifully presented on a 3 tiered cake stand and joyfully washed down with a couple glasses of bubbly. The Brabazon bar is certainly a very sophisticated setting for a few drinks and it will take you a while to make your way through its long and varied cocktail menu. The bar was lively initially made up of those on a conference day with The Belfry fully equipped for corporate days out with six boardrooms and more than 20 conference and events suites accommodating up to 400 guests.
As the afternoon passed the bar started to fill up with more hotel residents and those that had spent the day tackling the golf course. The usual route from the 18th green is to Sam’s Club House for a post round pint, where guests can take advantage of the relaxed environment and enjoy a menu of classic light bites and Sam’s double stack burger! Our destination for dinner though was The Belfry’s signature restaurant, The Ryder Grill. Award winning Chef Director Glen Watson has put together an a la carte menu that really does stir the senses! Using high quality, locally sourced ingredients the menu consists of succulent steaks, chargrills, spit roasts, fish and lobster. I went for the best of both worlds and opted for the Surf and Turf. Fillet steak perfectly cooked medium rare, accompanied by half a lobster and a side order of French fries, washed down superbly with a few glasses of fine wine of course. Somehow I did have space to tackle a sticky toffee pudding, which was well worth it.
ospitality The Ryder Grill is next to the Ryder Kitchen, its more relaxed counterpart offering a wide selection of starters, mains and desserts from their three course self-service menu. The Ryder Kitchen is also the scene for The Belfry’s Sunday Lunch, with 3 courses for just £24.50. The Belfry is set to add to their gastronomy offering with the opening of Rocca’s Pizza Pasta Restaurant this February. The family friendly Italian restaurant is named after Costantino Rocca, Italy’s most successful golfer who played the Belfry’s infamous Brabazon course when representing Europe in the Ryder Cup in 1993. Rocca’s will focus on serving fine Italian cuisine in more of a relaxed setting open Friday and Saturday evenings and daily during school holidays. The launch of Rocca’s is in line with a concerted effort by the resort to appeal to the family market. The end of 2015 saw the continues…
opening of The Belfry’s Woodland Walk. Set throughout the woods adjacent to the hotel, this interactive adventure features engaging activities perfect for families with young children, including den building, wildlife spotting and bug hotels. Fitness obstacles are in place for those that opt to tackle the 2km course at a slightly faster pace whilst next to the woodland walk is another option for younger children in the form of The Belfry’s brand new playground.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
Kids wanting to get in to golf will be tempted to sample the new Ryder Legends Mini Golf course with parents just as keen to get the putter out. The 12 hole layout has been thoughtfully designed with each hole inspired by Ryder Cup courses from the matches historic past and aimed at providing a fun and relaxing activity for the family to enjoy. Before reluctantly leaving The Belfry we had to sample the resorts spa and health club that no doubt played a huge role in helping the Belfry secure the accolade of England’s Leading Resort. I sampled their Fire & Ice experience. A new experience for most guests, Fire & Ice is a unique journey through 12 bio thermal rooms designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses, well worth a go at just £49 per person for residents. I also managed to squeeze in one of The Belfry’s signature treatments the Hero Back, Face & Scalp Treatment. Lasting 85 minutes, the ESPA experience delivers triple results including a back exfoliation, a back massage with hot stones, a personalised facial and a scalp massage from just £109 per person. The Belfry also offers a treatment unique to the Midlands area in the form of its Purva Karma four handed massage. The treatment involves two therapists working in synchronised harmony for the ultimate in tension releasing, deeply relaxing and rebalancing massage to achieve mental and spiritual bliss. Clients will enjoy twice the experience as four hands complete this vital energy point massage of the face, body and scalp, with the use of warm oil and hot volcanic stones, lasting 120 minutes and costing £259. Having been well fed and suitably relaxed we left The Belfry refreshed and understanding of its place as England’s best. The hospitality and high level of service is matched by its facilities and leisure offerings with golfers, couples, families and corporate clients all catered for. No doubt The Belfry Hotel & Resort is set for more accolades in the coming years. For reservations please visit www.thebelfry.com, email enquiries@thebelfry.com or call 0844 980 0600 The Belfry Hotel & Resort, Lichfield Road, Wishaw, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B76 9PR.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design
The Platinum Smart Heat Electric is the latest addition to the Bromic Platinum range and is made using stainless steel material, ensuring it looks the part without cutting back on quality.
36
This heater has a thin shape with minimal light emission. It can be placed on the ceiling or used as a wall-mounted heater, creating a stylish and unobtrusive installation. With a length of less than one meter and a depth of just 177mm, this heater is considerably smaller than other options currently on the market. For outdoor spaces that may only be used for special events there is the Tungsten range, an economical option available in electric, gas and portable models.
The Bromic Tungsten Portable is particularly popular due to its fuel efficiency, whilst also having wheels that make it easy to transport and tilting head that allows directional heat. The Tungsten range comes in variable sizes and heat outputs. Paul Holt from Smart Fire UK said: “We’re proud to be the only British distributor of Bromic heaters. CEDA Conference Welcomes Young Manufacturing Entrepreneur The first keynote confirmed speaker for CEDA's Conference young entrepreneur Josh Valman, founder and managing director of RPD International, certainly fits in with the events ‘The Next Generation' theme. Josh embodies the vision that makes Britain great; the vision for making ideas work and helping others to get the most from their businesses. At the tender age of ten he'd designed his first robot, and by 13 had sent his £500 savings and robot design to China to manufacture the components. At 15 Josh was working after school as a freelance design and engineering consultant, taking calls from China and reputedly earning up to £10,000 per week. He now heads RPD International employing over 60 people around the world to design, develop and manufacture products for any type of company that needs innovative ideas, cutting edge processes and access to international markets. "We are delighted to have secured Josh Valman as one of our keynote speakers for CEDA's 2016 Conference.
He will provide a really inspiring insight into the impact that manufacturing is having, and will have, on foodservice and foodservice equipment," says Adam Mason, CEDA director general. The CEDA 2016 Conference, 14-15 April, is being held at The Hilton, St George's Park, Burton upon Trent. To register as a delegate go to www.cedaconference.co.uk or call: 01293 854404.

The paper concludes that the IDEXX Pseudalert/Quanti-Tray method, produces confirmed results in a shorter time than the standard reference international and national membrane filtration-based culture methods for P. aeruginosa, which both use Pseudomonas CN agar. The authors concluded that Pseudalert/Quanti-tray was a valid alternative method for recreational water analysis. P. aeruginosa cells rapidly grow and reproduce using the rich supply of amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients present in the Pseudalert reagent. Actively growing strains of P. aeruginosa have an enzyme that metabolises the substrate in the reagent to produce blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Where quantification of a sample is required, IDEXX has developed a simple device known as a Quanti-Tray, which consists of 51 individually sealable cells. The QuantiTray can also be incubated for 24 hours after which the fluorescent cells can be counted and quantified by reference to to a most probable number (MPN) table.
“This study clearly demonstrates that Pseudalert is an effective test which detects P. aeruginosa quickly, enabling users to safeguard against ‘hot-tub rash,’ otherwise known as hot tub folliculitis, and a host of other infections, avoiding illness risk in sensitive populations,” commented Andrew Headland, Senior Business For more information, please Manager, for IDEXX EMEA. “Sample contact wateruk@idexx.com results in recreational waters need to be or call 01638 676800

How clean and hygienic are your facilities? UK gym-goers are not too ‘clean-living’ according to Initial Washroom Hygiene who revealed from a recent gym bag study that 60% of gym bags carry high levels* of bacterial contamination. Swab tests carried out found that more than one in three (35%) bags harboured coliform bacteria on the handle. These bacteria are typical indicators of poor hygiene and, outside the body are predominantly found in faecal matter. Any presence of coliform bacteria carries a significant threat of illness and cross contamination, yet the dirtiest bag within the test contained seven times the acceptable level of coliform counts. Bags made of leather were found to hold more bacteria than those made of canvas or nylon - the spongy surface texture of leather providing the perfect conditions for bacteria to live and grow. With bags designed to be carried and handled by their owners, and research estimating that 80% of all infections are transmitted by hands, thorough washing and hygiene practices are crucial in combatting the spread of bacteria. This is especially true in busy gym environments, which typically have high footfall, multiple touch-points and warm conditions.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
Interestingly, tests also revealed that bags belonging to females were just as likely to have high levels of bacteria as those belonging to males (64% vs. 61% respectively).
44
Dr Peter Barratt, technical manager, Initial Washroom Hygiene, said: “Gym bags are portable - we take them with us into our homes, places of work, in our cars, and on public transport. If they become contaminated, their potential for accumulating and transferring bacteria and virus particles is significant. Our study demonstrates how relevant the provision of easily accessible hand washing facilities and hand sanitisers is in gyms, to help prevent cross contamination between members. It’s also down to individuals to take responsibility for their own hand hygiene by following correct handwashing guidelines: between 20 and 30 seconds is the recommended time for thorough hand washing. This is one of the tips we give school children because if we can make hand washing and sanitising a habit at an early age, we’ll all be a little better off. As well as keeping yourself fit in the gym, it’s important to remember to stay healthy at the same time.” *‘High levels’ are defined as any sample containing an ATP (adenosine triphosphate) reading of 500 Relative Light Units or above using the Hygiena SystemSure process on either the handle or inside of the bag.
New Cleaning & Hygiene Show to launch in Manchester April 2016 will see the launch of the new Manchester Cleaning Show - a regional spin-off trade event within the Cleaning Show portfolio.
