OPEN YOUR ARMS TO ACCESSIBILITY When you are planning or designing from scratch or for a refurbishment, take a moment to welcome accessibility by opening your arms. That gesture adds more than enough space onto a Regulatory unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet to enable it to accommodate the user, up to two carers, plus an adult-sized changing bench and hoist. That opens the venue to potentially up to 15million people* for whom a conventional wheelchair-accessible toilet isn’t suitable, who need a bench and/or hoist, (Space to Change)

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

“Just 160cm x 200cm: that’s all the space we’re talking about,” says Kelvin Grimes, away from home accessible toilet project manager @ Clos-o-Mat. “Add that onto the 220cm x 200cm required for a unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet, add a changing bench and hoist, and you enable thousands of people who need extra space, or equipment, to spend timeand money- at the retail outlet, leisure attraction, cinema…

4

Adds Robin Tuffley, marketing manager at Clos-o-Mat, “Building Regulations state that where space is limited, then a unisex wheelchairaccessible toilet is the one WC facility that should be provided. In an ideal world, the full ambit of toilet facilities would be provided- male, female, baby change, wheelchair-accessible with left and right hand transfer, and a Changing Places+ facility. But it’s not an ideal world. Space costs. Yet almost 20% of the UK population is disabled. They spend £80billion a year! So adding 310cm2 to a toilet and providing the extra equipment is a cost-effective use of floorspace, in that it opens the door to almost everybody.”

“Without this, people who need the space, or equipment, either have to sit in soiled underwear, nappies, lie on the floor to be changed, or cut their trip short and go home. Or they go to venues that DO have suitable toilets, and spend their time, and money there.”

A Space to Change toilet has been developed by campaigners for toilet facilities with an adult-sized changing bench and hoist, as a compromise where there isn’t the space for a full, additional Changing Places toilet facility. A 7.5m2 Space to Change builds on the conventional, Regulatory unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet, further accommodating an adult sized changing bench and hoist.

* potential users of accessible toilets with adult-sized changing bench and hoist: • 1.5m wheelchair users • 6.5 million people who have either bladder or bowel incontinence • 1.5million people with a learning disability • 1.2million people living with stroke • 62,000

amputees • 30,000 people with cerebral palsy • 13,000 people with acquired brain injuries • 8,500 people with multiple sclerosis • 500 people with motor neurone disease • 8,000 people with spina bifida • 20,000 people with a stoma • 3.8million adults morbidly obese

Clos-o-Mat is the only UK company fully equipped, in-house, to provide the resource necessary to provide appropriate disabled changing toilets. It can provide design advice, supply, install, commission, and then service & maintain the facility. It can provide full project management. It can train staff in the equipment so they can help customers. Full details of the Space To Change concept can be found at www.clos-o-mat.com and the Firefly Friends Community. Clos-o-Mat’s website also includes full support data, including white papers, CAD blocks, video, technical specifications and typical layouts. Uniquely, Clos-o-Mat offers, in-house, a full support service, encompassing site surveys, design advice, supply, installation, commissioning and subsequent service & maintenance.

+ A Changing Places toilet is a bigger version of Space to Change, being according to British Standards, 12m2, with an adult-sized heightadjustable changing bench, ceiling track hoist, privacy screen, and is provided IN ADDITION To other wheelchair-accessible toilets.

Award-Winning Sorbet For Grown-Ups! For too long now sorbets have been blighted by a chequered history littered with citric acid and suspiciously synthetic/predictable flavour formats Beckleberry’s is an award-winning ice cream, sorbet and patisserie provider, (99 Great Taste Awards & Counting) a family-owned operation based in the North that is on a single-minded mission to reverse the fortunes of top-notch sorbets. According to Beckleberry’s co-founder, Peter Craig, ‘There’s no question that we’re a little biased when it comes to top drawer sorbets since it was our Blackcurrant & Kirsch sorbet that put us on the map in 2008 when we won the Fortnum & Mason Supreme Champion award, (the top Great Taste gong). This accolade paved the way for a cacophony of equally well received sweet treats: Passion Fruit & Tarragon, Sloe Gin, Pink Grapefruit and Sour Cherry and Amaretto. We like sorbets because they unequivocally reflect our commitment to more ‘adult palates,’ providing the perfect setting for best-in-class/clean-deck ingredients to thrive, whilst refusing to succumb to heavyhanded masking sugars or any artificial nasties. Bold, occasionally improbable flavour liaisons are the foundation blocks on which we’ve built our name, although we’d be the first to admit that we don’t always get it right (Curried Pineapple and Parsnip & Balsamic Vinegar).’

Boosting snack sales

6

“While crisps and nuts are still the snack of choice for most bar customers, snacks from around the world are increasingly popular, such as Wasabi peas and crunchy corn,” says Dave Willis, who runs the Salty Dog brands with wife Judy. “Our Darling corn range, in a number of different flavours, does very well. “We’ve also found that the unusual flavours in our Gruntled Pork Crackling range that Salty Dog launched last June have been incredibly popular, so much so that we’re looking into adding new flavours. Customers love the product.” Maximising sales in a hotel bar isn’t just about what’s on sale. It’s also about how the snacks are sold. One innovation that’s increasingly popular is the trend for bars to stock bulk snacks that they can dispense and

Sorbets have been a real beneficiary of the bustling freefrom movement/lactose-friendly (£630m) movement, growth that will result in a brand new ‘Northern soul’ livery that will be seen across all their packaging and website (from April 17). Peter adds, ‘we’re so proud of our Northern roots quashing the myth that the UK’s finest sorbets and ice cream are made only in the South West or Home Counties.’ As a major operator within airlines (1st class & business class) foodservice, hotels, delis, farm shops, hotels, coffee shops and even supermarkets Beckleberry’s has also noted a growing appetite for sorbets that employ superfruits and ingredients – our new blackcurrant & liquorice is gaining rave reviews (in taste trials) and it’s no fluke that blackcurrants are the hot fruit of 2017 (high in potassium, iron B vitamins and antioxidants that assist inflammation, muscle recovery and reduce heart disease – whilst liquorice counters fatigue and exhaustion. ‘That said,’ concludes Peter, ‘taste is our only parameter when choosing our next great flavour combo.’ www.beckleberrys.co.uk

put into individual or sharing bowls. This might be nuts like salted peanuts or cashews, or maybe Bombay mix or Wasabi peas. Not only does it provide better margins for operators, it also gives a sense of theatre. Operators can choose the type of snack that best suits their hotel bar. Chocolate is surprisingly popular with those customers who have a sweet tooth. Confectionery appeals to adults and children, which is one of the reasons we recently launched our first key confectionery product, Cheggs. These bite-sized candy-coated chocolate eggs come in 30g and 90g packets which make great hotel bar treats all year round, but are especially ideal for Easter.

HandPicked Hotels acquires Stanbrook Abbey from Clarenco

Clarenco, the operator of the Amazing Venues brand, has sold its second hotel in two days following the acquisition of the 56-bedroom Stanbrook Abbey hotel in Worcester by Hand Picked Hotels, for an undisclosed sum.

The off-loading of the two properties has left Amazing Venue with four properties: Ackergill Tower in the Scottish Highlands and three hotels located on Second World War forts in the Solent estuary, including Spitbank, No Man’s and Horse Sand. The acquisition of Stanbrook Abbey takes the Hand Picked Hotels portfolio up to 20. Located within a 26-acre walled estate at the foot of the Malvern Hills, the hotel is located within a Gothicstyle abbey dating back to the early 16th century, once inhabited by Benedict nuns. Additions to the building were later added by Augustus Pugin, the architect of the Houses of Parliament. The property includes a wedding and events suite created with the abbey’s presbytery and a 100ft bell tower overlooking the River Severn. There are a total of 17 function rooms. Julia Hands, who founded Hand Picked Hotels in 2001 with her husband, financier Guy Hands, said: “The acquisition of Stanbrook Abbey Hotel is a delightful addition

to our portfolio of country house hotels with fascinating histories and stunning architecture. “It also fits with our planned growth to acquire hotels in strong locations across the UK, close to good transport links to major cities.” Hand Picked hopes to add a small number of bedrooms in disused spaces within existing buildings at Stanbrook Abbey, as well as look as other options to enhance the hotel.

Lodore Falls hotel in Borrowdale, Cumbria, has reopened following the completion of the first phase of an £8m refurbishment programme. The hotel, which is owned by the Lake District Hotels group, closed for six weeks during which time the entire ground floor – including its lobby, lounge and restaurant – has been refurbished in a completely new style.

Suzanne Hurndall, chief executive of Clarenco, said that the company has no plans to sell any more properties and will continue to grow and trade its remaining businesses.

The company said the new décor reflects the local landscape in texture and colour, with designs featuring slate and wood with palettes of soft green and purple contrasting with burnt orange.

“Clarenco is delighted to have found a purchaser for Stanbrook Abbey Hotel, who not only has a proven track record in the industry, but is as excited and passionate about the hotel and its opportunities as we have been.”

Dani Hope, marketing director of Lake District Hotels, said: “We are delighted with the new look of the hotel, a lot of time and work has gone into the project, from the initial planning, to the hard work from local tradesmen, along with many of our employees, who have worked tirelessly to get the hotel up and running in time.”

Hurndall added that Mike Clare, the multi-millionaire founder of the Dreams bedroom stores and the property development business Clarenco, had very much enjoyed the renovation of Stanbrook Abbey, which the company had bought in 2010. “As a serial entrepreneur, there is always the chance that he will make further acquisitions,” she added.

The second phase of the refurbishment has also started, with the property expected to reveal its newly refubsihed garden suite function room and conservatory extensions in June. Following that there will be two more phases to the refurbishment, with a brand new brasserie opening in December and the addition of a new spa and 14 bedroom suites in spring 2018.

Tamburlaine Hotel to open in Cambridge with former Waterside Inn chef The Tamburlaine Hotel – from the Dublin-based O’Callaghan Hotel Group has confirmed it is to open in Cambridge on April 1, with a former Waterside Inn chef across its three dining spaces.

First announced in December 2015, the 155-bedroom hotel on Station Road will be the O’Callaghan group’s first UK opening. Rooms will start at £200 per night.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

General manager will be Zac Pearse, former manager of Malmaison’s Charterhouse Square London and the Hotel du Vin in Henley-on-Thames.

10

Executive chef will be Alan Dann, whose career has included roles at the three Michelin starred Waterside Inn in Bray, Restaurant Pierre Gagnaire in Paris, and Restaurant Michel Guérard in southwest France, as well as head chef positions throughout France and at English country hotels. Dann will oversee all food at the hotel, including in the main Brasserie, which will serve a menu of locally sourced, seasonal dishes and grills from breakfast to dinner. Typical dishes will include grilled breast of wood pigeon with puy lentils, pickled girolles and parsnip;

Blythburgh pork with heritage carrots and Aspall cider jus; or from the grill, a rare-breed beef rib eye; Barnsley chop; and Norfolk Black chicken supreme. There will also be a cocktail bar. Cocktails will take inspiration from the university and history of Cambridge, such as the King’s College Spritz, with Cambridge gin, Aperol, lemon juice, and rhubarb spirit with Champagne; or the Cambridge Sour, with Monkey Shoulder, Disaronno, lemon juice, gomme syrup and egg white.

The property also has five conference rooms available to hire for meetings and events. The décor comes from the Shoreditchbased Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, and features a double-height lobby in the entrance hall, a feature staircase, an overlooking library, pendant lighting, large windows, leather banquettes in the dining areas, vibrant foliage in the Garden Room, and bold tiled floors and neon lighting in the Steam deli.

The hotel – which is named after a play by Christopher Marlowe (a former fellow of Cambridge University’s Corpus Christi College) ‒ will also feature the colonial-style Garden Room, offering afternoon tea, Champagne and cocktails.

“We are very excited to be opening this significant and stunning hotel in Cambridge,” says Pearse. “We want locals to see Tamburlaine as their hotel; a place where they can come for a special dinner with family, cocktails or afternoon tea with friends, or grab a coffee and sandwich from our deli on their way to the station. Tamburlaine is a vibrant place for everyone to enjoy.”

A delicatessen, Steam, will offer fresh salads and daily sandwiches, plus yoghurt and fruit pots for breakfast. It will also serve wine and charcuterie in the evenings.

The family-run O’Callaghan Hotel Group operates four properties in Dublin – the first of which, the MontClare, opened in 1990 ‒ plus The Elliott Hotel in Gibraltar, and the Annapolis Hotel in Maryland, USA.

‘If people notice the lighting then you’ve got it wrong’ The hotel features 453 rooms and suites over 18 floors. The ground floor Meridian Lounge and first floor Clipper bar complement the vibrant rooftop Eighteen sky bar, but what of the lighting? All front of house light fittings, from the reception area, corridors and meeting rooms through to Eighteen, The Spa and the enormous pillar-free Arora Ballroom are LED. This delivers great flexibility, high levels of reliability and excellent energy efficiency. Delivering a project of this scale, over 600 LED drivers and boards were required, on time and on budget required close cooperation and Century Lighting acknowledge Tridonic’s role in meeting these demands. Andy Tsui, Specification Sales Engineer, Century explained; “Tridonic understood the scale of the project and couldn’t do enough to ensure that we had the drivers and boards we needed when we needed them.” The hotel’s exterior consists of vast windows allowing natural light to flood the interior whilst enabling guests to view Canary Wharf’s skyline. Maximising on the location was a priority, but at night when the view is most impressive glass can act more as a mirror of the interior, thus distorting the external view. The lighting needed to be soft enough to eliminate this problem, provide an ambiance that enhanced the setting, whilst making people feel welcome and relaxed. In the Market Brasserie, that seats 160, there was a danger that it might feel like a large, functional canteen. The use of targeted down lighters creates a more intimate feel, depending on time of day and occupancy levels.

A huge challenge was the illumination for one of Europe’s largest column-free ballrooms. Totalling 3,200 square metres, this 80m x 40m room can also be broken into 14 sub rooms, each configured to meet the user’s specific lighting requirements. The ceiling has 18 coffers, 12 measuring 10m x 8m, the other six measuring 10m x 6m. Each is lit with LED tape which operates as a white light, 2.7K to 4K, or shines a coloured RGB light to create a party atmosphere. There is also a complex grid of hanging points for the installation of additional lighting rigs. The LED strip lighting was also used on the corridor coffers, around the surround in the Clipper Bar and other meeting areas. In total over one kilometre of LED tape was installed. Many of the corridors have their lighting supplemented by LED wall washers located along their length approximately 50 centimetres above the floor level. Tridonic boards and gears were installed throughout the hotel’s 200 space car park to provide a well lit area and The Business Centre was fitted with a bluer, 4K light via a system of Tridonic DALI 300 x 300 panels. Observed Graham Clark, Design Director, Grove Developments, a division of Arora Group, the company behind the InterContinental London – The O2. He continued; "The important thing is that the lighting acts in support of the overall design of the hotel.”

Work begins on Chester hotel expansion An extensive refurbishment and extension programme is underway at the Valor Hospitality Europe managed hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Spa Chester. To accommodate increasing demand at the 140-bedroom hotel, especially for residential spa breaks, work has now started on an extension which will see 79 new bedrooms, including suites added to the property. Space for additional car parking is also being created. The design of the new bedrooms, led by interior designers Rethink Interiors, will take inspiration from the hotel’s rich history which was originally a manor house built in the 18th Century and once owned by pioneer balloonist Thomas Baldwin. Artwork in the bedrooms will reflect this, as well as local scenes from around the city and Chester Zoo. The new bedrooms are due to be ready for guests in October 2017. The first phase of the renovation programme completed at the end of 2016 and saw a brand-new restaurant open at the hotel specialising in creating carefully crafted dishes that use British ingredients wherever possible. The Garden Room and Terrace, which offers views out over the original walled garden, allows diners to follow the story of the provenance of the food and drink suppliers, whether it’s from land, sea or garden.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

While the work on the bedrooms is underway, the courtyard outside the main entrance will be landscaped and extensive work will also take place in the reception, lounge and lobby areas. These public spaces will incorporate luxurious sapphire blue and emerald green tones for a touch of glamour whilst remaining in-keeping with the DoubleTree brand.

12

Artwork in the public areas will portray Chester landmarks interpreted in an abstract way and the bespoke made carpet patterns were developed from aerial views of the city. The design will also incorporate subtle hints of basket weave, balloon inspired lighting, exposed timber frame furniture and monochrome patterns to reinforce the concept derived from Thomas Baldwin’s association with the building. Brian McCarthy, managing director of Valor Hospitality Europe, said: “The DoubleTree by Hilton Chester is

a popular and successful hotel which is why we’re investing in its long-term future through the expansion. “Chester is a growing market with a strong business community and is a leading leisure destination, especially as local attractions continue to expand and create greater demand in the area. The refurbishment will further establish the hotel as not just a hotel but a leading resort destination for both national and international travellers.” Edward Cross, general manager at the DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, said: “As well as looking after guests from across the UK and further afield, we regularly welcome people to the hotel from the local area for weddings, spa days and dinner or lunch at our two restaurants. Our spa packages in particular are incredibly popular and we’re seeing increasing numbers coming to the hotel looking to enjoy a few days of complete luxury and relaxation. “No matter how far our guests travel to come here, we provide the very highest levels of service. The refurbishment and expansion will further enhance the experience for our guests and allow even more people to enjoy this fantastic city.” As well as The Garden Room and Terrace, the hotel is also home to the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill. Valor Hospitality Europe has been operational in the UK for 18 months and manages 19 properties in its UK portfolio on behalf of investment vehicles affiliated with MCAP Global Finance Ltd.

In addition, the refurbishment needed to be completed as quickly as possible to minimise downtime for the restaurant.“ “The flooring installation went extremely smoothly and was carried out in around two weeks, enabling the restaurant to meet its deadline and reopen to the public earlier this year.”

Atkinson & Kirby helps create ambience for Theo Randall at the InterContinental London Park Lane Atkinson & Kirby has supplied flooring from its Caledonian range for Theo Randall’s InterContinental London Park Lane restaurant, helping to create a sophisticated and prestigious look as part of a complete refurbishment to mark the establishment’s 10 year anniversary.

Since its launch the establishment has won numerous awards, and has been named one of the UK’s top 100 restaurants in the 2016 National Restaurant Awards. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Theo Randall at the InterContinental London Park Lane underwent a complete refurbishment earlier this year. As part of the project, the restaurant was given a more modern aesthetic to help keep the business fresh in the face of increasing competition from a growing market. The installation was handled by Essex-based contract flooring specialist Chelmer Group. The company also advised on the product

specification during the design and planning stage, recommending the Caledonian range in a natural finish to meet the restaurant’s requirement for a fresher and more contemporary look and feel.

“Our Caledonian range perfectly complements the restaurant’s intimate and striking interior, and we are delighted that it has been chosen for this project.” Atkinson & Kirby’s Caledonian range is available in oak, maple, walnut and blacknut, with a variety of finishes including lacquered, handscraped, brushed and oiled. Thicknesses range from 14/2.5mm to 20/6mm, with widths from 90mm to 207mm. For more information about Atkinson & Kirby visit: www.akirby.co.uk. For more information on Chelmer Group visit: www.chelmergroup.com.

The dining area, which previously had brown leather and dark wood pillars, now boasts bare wood tables, lighter coloured furniture and a partial terrazzo floor, so it was essential that the wooden flooring area complemented these features. Derek Montgomery, from Chelmer Group, explains more: “We selected flooring from Atkinson & Kirby’s Caledonian range, as its natural looking patina provided a striking contrast to the terrazzo and helped to give the room a light and airy, yet sophisticated atmosphere. “As you would expect with such an exclusive establishment, the fit and finish needed to be of an

Bring Your Own Device from hotel’s perspective

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

You can’t live without your phone? And your tablet is always with you on your travels? It is because you can’t imagine yourself without having access to your favourite content? You’re probably not the only one. And most likely that’s why hotels started to invest in the new trend allowing its guests to enjoy a home-like experience in their interiors.

16

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – this term excites many guests. It means you can bring any type of smart accessory, mostly it refers to phones and tablets (at least for now), and bring it to a totally new environment, such as hotel room, but still receive similar, if not the same, experience as in your own home. For a simpler explanation we need an example. Let’s say you’re a big fan of this new Netflix series and you can’t go to bed without watching the latest episode. Unfortunately your boss sent you out on a long business trip and you dread

the thought of watching it on the screen of your phone or tablet as the size matters. Luckily for you the future is here and your hotel invested in smart TVs allowing content mirroring. What’s content mirroring? Most new generation TVs have a built in box that enables HDMI connection over WiFi. This way you can easily connect any of your smart devices to the TV and share its screen. From there it is not a long way to play Netflix on peer-topeer basis or YouTube channels, or even browse news on bigger screen, if that’s your liking. Add to this room service and you have a movie night just like at your cosy apartment.

Screen Mirroring

HOW TO USE BESPOKE SOFT FURNIS BRING THE WOW FACTOR TO YOUR This month we have caught up with Mitre Linen’s Rachel Price, to discuss how hotels can give the wow factor to their rooms using the latest soft furnishing trends. We have compiled all her tips on how to create a luxurious room using the latest colours, prints and textures onto your curtains, cushions, bed runners and bedspreads.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Go for a wow effect

18

Be on trend and choose this year’s bold designs and colours. Don’t be afraid to be bold and embrace glorious geometrics with splashes of lime and grey, bright animal prints and glamorous metallic undertones. There’s a whole range of delightful crushed velvets, tartans and printed linens on the market today which

will give any room an added wow factor. First impressions count and a unique room décor will help to make your establishment hotel stand out and create an unforgettable stay.

Try using different tones Transform your bedrooms with the use of colour this season. Popular this year are the rich and bold colours including aubergine, navy, purple and walnut or striking shades of magenta, scarlet and lilac. All can bring a real impact to a guestroom. Earthy colours such as slate, chocolate, lime and taupe are softer on the eye and give a

room a more subtle, muted tone. Also in demand at the moment are the vintage tonal colours including dusky pink, soft gold and chalk blue which add a beautiful, delicate look to a room.

Go outside for inspiration The outdoors trend was popular last year and it is set to continue in 2017. It’s a beautiful style which works very well for guest-rooms because it evokes a sense of calmness and tranquility – which is exactly what you need when you are away from home.

SHINGS TO HOTEL This is a striking trend which has really started to take off this year. Try mixing and matching floral prints and bird prints for a traditional look with a bit of a contemporary twist. These prints look great on runners, cushions and blackout lined curtains in a room and help to create an indulgent setting. We love them in this season’s slate, pistachio, claret and petrol colours.

Go denim Recently, Dulux announced that their colour for this year is the extremely versatile and sophisticated ‘Denim Drift’. Blue is proving to be in demand and, at Mitre Linen, we’re seeing blue having a big influence on interiors in luxury Bed and Breakfast establishments already. Plan your refurbishment well

Customers today have very high expectations so it is crucial to make sure that the room they will be staying in is all they have dreamed of. Try to invest in quality products and ask for professional advice from soft furnishing experts to make sure each room is both stylish and comfortable. When you are choosing fabrics, try to think about pattern repeats and picture how these would look in the room. An easy way to add a touch of glamour to any room is to add colour, different textures and prints. It is a good idea to provide blackout curtains (something that we offer as standard at Mitre Linen) because they help your guests to enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by outside light.

Make your budget go further Don’t despair if your budget is tight as it is still possible to

create an exciting space for your guests. One way you can do this is to reconsider the sizes of your cushions and runners so you can best use the width of the fabric.

The Coravin Wine System is the only tool in the world that lets you pour wine without ever removing the cork using Coravin’s proprietary technology. Now wine enthusiasts can expand their palates by exploring, comparing and contrasting regions, varietals, producers, styles and vintages without exposing entire bottles to oxidation. Restaurants and wine bars can use the Coravin System to expand their wine programs by offering better wines by the glass, without the risk of oxidization if a bottle is not sold that night, while wineries and wine stores can offer customers a taste of fine wines before they buy.

The greatest benefit, however, is flavour. Synergy Grills get hotter than average chargrills. Heat ‘atomises’ the natural fats that are released during cooking which are misted back into food making it incredibly succulent.

DoubleTree by Hilton Increases UK presence with 12 hotels opened in 12 months £16M investment programme for eight conversions brings total to more than 30 DoubleTree by Hilton properties in the UK

Eight of the 12 hotel openings were part of a £16 million conversion programme, providing unique, contemporary accommodations and full-service facilities to guests in Aberdeen Treetops, Bristol North, Coventry, Dartford Bridge, Edinburgh Airport, Newbury North, Southampton and Strathclyde. Dianna Vaughan, senior vice president and global brand head, DoubleTree by Hilton, said, “The addition of 12 UK hotels in 2016 - from Aberdeen in Scotland to Southampton on the South Coast - took us past 30 properties and significantly strengthened our position in the market. Within each of these hotels, guests can expect the DoubleTree by Hilton signature welcome, complete with the warm DoubleTree Cookie - always delivered with a smile.”

Since launching in the UK in 2008, DoubleTree by Hilton has expanded rapidly across the country, opening an average of four new hotels each year. The brand offers a consistent, upscale standard of accommodation within a varied portfolio which has grown to incorporate many long-established hotels, such as DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London - Ealing and DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London - Hyde Park. Each hotel in the conversion programme has been refurbished, now showcases individual design and F&B concepts, reflecting the location of each property and newly renovated meeting spaces, commencing with DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Strathclyde in October and completing with DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Edinburgh Airport in December. Beyond the iconic warm DoubleTree Cookie welcome, each hotel provides guests with a full complement of services and DoubleTree by Hilton brand amenities, including the Wake up DoubleTree Breakfast™. Each of the hotels is also part of Hilton Honors, the awardwinning guest-loyalty program for Hilton’s 14 distinct hotel brands. Hilton Honors members who book directly through preferred Hilton channels save time and money and gain instant access to the benefits they care about most, such as an exclusive member discount, free Wi-Fi and a flexible payment slider that allows members to choose nearly any combination of Points and money to book a stay. Members can also redeem their Points for free nights, to gain access to unique events through the Hilton Honors auction platform. Hospitality Technology

LaLiT London opts for pioneering wireless charging LaLiT London, located in the heart of London near Tower Bridge, has opted to install the latest development in wireless charging, as it provides guests with convenient, ultra-modern charging facilities that enhances the guest experience. The technology is supplied by CHARGit, and allows for multiple devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops to charge simultaneously through a surface, without the need for plug cables, offering ease of use for consumers, and a new service offering for venues. It’s been installed in several communal areas within LaLiT London, with plans underway to install it in every hotel suite. Tiago Stattmiller of LaLiT London said: “We want to be able to offer our guests the very best experience. Implementing cutting edge technology such as CHARGit within our hotel allows us to differentiate ourselves and set us apart in a very competitive market.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Tiago added: “With CHARGit’s wireless charging technology being a relatively new concept, we know it will be something our guests will recognise and appreciate. The ease of use is a key part of what it has to offer, as we want our guests to have an enjoyable, relaxing and stress free stay. We are particularly attractive to international travellers, and the fact that CHARGit removes the need for travel plug adaptors is another key benefit.”

26

CHARGit’s technology works by fitting a unit under a table or counter surface to create a charging zone, known as a CHARGzone. This zone can then charge multiple devices at once, simply by placing them within it. Compatible devices need only be placed within the CHARGzone to charge, while noncompatible devices can have a CHARGkey added, providing them with the same function, with no precise alignment needed for charging to begin. The fitted unit, known as a CHARGhub, is a ‘through surface transmitter’ that can be installed to the bottom of any non-metallic surface (a wooden table or counter for example). There is no need for core-drilling, which can potentially damage aesthetics/ décor, with the unit only needing to be screwed in place.

For devices that don’t have wireless charging capability already installed, a CHARGkey is necessary, which acts in a similar fashion to a key fob. Having a CHARGkey plugged into a smartphone, tablet or laptop’s USB/charging port allows it to charge wirelessly. LaLiT London has installed CHARGzones at its reception desks, in two meeting rooms, its headmasters lounge and teachers lounges, the restaurant and also in the spa and gym. Plans are in place to roll out CHARGzone’s in all of the hotel’s suites. Hayley Freedman, Director of CHARGit said: “The great thing about wireless charging technology in its present state is that it offers something new. LaLiT London is currently ahead of the curve, but it won’t be long until wireless charging becomes a standard offering. LaLiT will then be in the advantageous position of having the infrastructure in place, while already having benefited from offering it ahead of rival hotels.” For more information on CHARGit and what wireless charging can offer, please visit the website via www.chargit.co.uk or ring 0333 700 8889.

Avenista Table Reservations also provide all-inclusive access to their incredible support team (awards surely coming sometime soon!) who can implement booking strategies and take care of all of the administrative duties involved in managing the software too. It’s no surprise that Avenista® customers tend to be busy, extremely well-run restaurants who are always looking for that extra bit of efficiency and want it without hefty prices attached. Unlike so many booking systems Avenista® do not operate a Diner portal and so will never attempt to sell tables from competitor restaurants or gazump a restaurant’s Google ranking.

Never heard of Avenista®? Well, perhaps you can be forgiven. With the stampede towards basic, web-based booking systems in recent years many restaurateurs completely overlooked this unassuming UK company, attracted instead by the fanfares of the big booking operators. But one size does not fit all and having experienced high running costs or poor service delivery many restaurateurs are now looking elsewhere and finding Avenista has intelligent, super-easy software with everything they need and more for often a fraction of the cost. With more than 10 years’ experience delivering Table Reservation software the team at Avenista® know what makes busy restaurants tick and have continuously honed and polished their software to make running a Front of House effortless. These days millions of diners are seated each year using Avenista® systems. Oddly perhaps, at Avenista® their mission is for their customers to spend the minimum time possible using the booking software, yet still have the software do exactly what the customer needs, enabling them to spend more time in their restaurants on activities where they can really add value. To achieve this they worked on making Avenista® intelligent and efficient without taking away any of the features that allow restaurants to deliver really personal service to their Diners. And, so keen are they to deliver on the mission they

As Kerry Beswick (Managing Director of Avenista®) says – “We have absolutely no relationship with Diners at all. Everything we do is focused on the restaurateur. We are all about providing the absolute best tools and services for our customers to help them make the best restaurants.” With an impressive client roster, awesome features (including a new online payment feature for events and deposits – saving restaurants huge amounts of time, and reducing no-shows), and pricing lower than anything comparable, many restaurateurs are now getting the message and switching to Avenista® saving themselves time, money and headaches.

London was the capital of the casual dining world last week – as Casual Dining returned to the Business Design Centre in Islington to showcase the best new products, solutions, insights, and innovations of the year.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The multi-award winning event enjoyed its fourth year of significant growth, raising the bar yet again to serve up 4,785 unique attendees, with over £736m annual spending power, to its 200 exhibitors. Notably, nearly one in three visitors are responsible for a corporate spend of over £500k.

32

Demonstrating their growing appetite for casual dining, senior executives from all the UK’s biggest restaurant, pub and bar groups, plus thousands of independent operators, hotels, wholesalers, distributors, attractions, and contract caterers, packed the aisles to discover what’s new and next at this vibrant industry showcase. Significantly, the strong footfall has been backed by glowing testimonials from across the show floor. Fantastic, excellent, informative, busy, successful, unmissable, and essential – are just some of the words attendees have used to describe the show so far.

Casual Dining reports 9% increase in attendance for 2017 Casual Dining enjoys its best show yet with nearly 5,000 attendees

“Casual Dining is always a fantastic opportunity to discover something new,” says Garry Duncan, operations director at Nando’s. “It’s become the meeting place for our industry.” “Brilliant show again, with the most innovation I have seen at any of the shows this year,” says Tim Foster, co-founder of the Yummy Collection. “I thoroughly enjoy visiting Casual Dining. It’s a must attend event!” says John Metcalf, commercial director at Strada. Among the attendees were also senior decision makers from Jamie’s Italian, JD Wetherspoon, Enterprise Inns, Whitbread, Marston’s, Revolution Bars Group, Mitchells & Butlers, PizzaExpress, Pizza Hut Restaurants, Carluccio’s, Prezzo, GBK, Punch, ASK Italian, Zizzi, Greene King, Bella Italia, Café Rouge, Las Iguanas, Giraffe, K10 Restaurants, ETM Group, Côte Restaurants, Yo! Sushi, Papa John’s, Glendola Leisure Group, Bourne Leisure, Hollywood Bowl, The Rank Group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, Stonegate Pub Company, Charles Wells, Compass Group, Sodexo, WSH, Bidvest

Foodservice, Hilton, Thwaites hotels & spas, and wagamama (winner of ‘Multiple Casual Dining Restaurant of the Year’ at the Casual Dining Restaurant & Pub Awards 2017).

The industry’s favourite show Chris Brazier, group event director of Casual Dining, calls the support of the show ‘phenomenal’, highlighting the dedication of the thousands of attendees who turned out over both days. Casual Dining 2017 was a record-breaker in every respect, he says. “The fact that we’ve just enjoyed our best ever show – with record numbers of buyers and, more importantly, a record quality of buyers – who battled travel strikes and Storm Doris to attend – is testament to this wonderful industry of conscientious decision makers, who simply wouldn’t miss the two days a year that the casual dining sector gets together. Their support of the show, as always, has been phenomenal. Thank you to all our visitors, exhibitors, speakers, associations, and media partners,” he says. It was this quality of attendees, the high level of engagement, and quantity of new business leads that impressed countless exhibitors. Prompting over 75% of them (another record) to rebook for next year before the show had even closed.

“We don’t have to fly across the Atlantic to find the latest industry innovations under one roof any more – Casual Dining has brought all that and more to the UK,” says Karen Forrester, CEO of TGI Friday’s UK.

Summing up their exhibitor experience Sam Chote, head of sales at Karma Cola, says: “For a business still getting started, choosing the right show can be quite stressful. Casual Dining 2017 was clearly the best trade show we have done – we had so many great conversations.” “We had a huge amount of interest for 2017. We have already signed up to exhibit in 2018 – well done to the Casual Dining team for another fantastic show,” says Terry Larkin, group general manager at JJ Food Service. “Casual Dining is my favourite show of the year. It always delivers a good atmosphere and a high level of serious visitors looking for innovative ideas and quality products – the main reason why we’ve exhibited since the show’s inception,” says Robert Marciano, director of DiSotto Foods. “Casual Dining was another fantastic show. It’s by far the best for us and the quality of footfall is exceptional,” says Kim Addison, marketing director at Vito UK. “This is the second time that we have chosen to exhibit at Casual Dining and I have to say that each year gets better! The contacts and leads that we collected were absolutely outstanding and we have meetings booked as a result beyond all of our expectations. The Casual Dining show is now firmly in our diary as a ‘must do’ for next year,” says Kim Antoniou, founder of Kafoodle.

S&T UK WORK COMPLETED ON

A Hotelier & Hospitality Design

After two years working on the £30m renovation and refurbishment of the former St Olave’s Grammar School, S&T(UK) Ltd recently completed work in transforming this architecturally significant Victorian building into the stunning 70 room The LaLit Hotel in London’s Queen Elizabeth Street. The boutique hotel and spa, which combines the finest Victorian architecture with Indian overtones and will have a school theme throughout, is due to open later this month.

36

Jeff Watts CEO, S&T UK Ltd commented: “S&T was delighted to work with the LaLit Suri Hospitality Group, which has a portfolio of 11 luxury hotels throughout India, on this, its first overseas property. We had a team of over 380 working on the project which included the groundwork, the M&E and total fit- out”. Working with EPR Architects the Suri Group and Archer Humphryes on the interiors, the grade II listed building has been painstakingly restored by S&T using the best in British craftsmanship. From its original oak panelling, cornicing, and striking arched windows to skirting boards, mouldings, chimneys and distinctive bricks, all have been carefully repaired or replaced with like-for-like.

THE SITE HISTORY

The striking red brick building near the Thames was originally designed for St Olave’s school by Edward Mountford, the architect of the Old Bailey, and built in the 1890s. It was most recently used by Lambeth College. Archaeologists were invited in for 14 weeks to dig the historic ground whilst construction was taking place and found the paths and foundations of the 18th century houses that had lined Tooley Street that were demolished to make way for the original school building in 1855. There had been low level occupancy around the site between the 15th and 17th centuries when the area became a sand and gravel quarry. THE CONSTRUCTION As with any listed building, this project had its challenges, particularly as the building was left empty for nearly ten years and had substantial water damage through dilapidated roofs. The emphasis was always to maintain as much of the original fabric as possible whilst supporting the new loads and layouts. The project progressed in three areas; a new third floor and roof, internals and basements. We inserted a new mezzanine floor between

the existing second floor and roof whilst strengthening the existing roof trusses to support a new replacement. The excavation was nearly nine meters below street level at the deepest point, so we needed a substantial sheet piling ground support system. The basement under the new building, which houses the spa, was formed by a controlled sequence of deep underpins so we could excavate to form new basement levels. Monitors were used to warn us of any excessive movement which could damage the old structure. The site footprint was restricted, so all the excavated materials had to be brought to a central collection point through a series of conveyor belts below ground.’ RETAINING THE KEY HISTORICAL ELEMENTS

‘Working on a listed building is all about discovery. You open something up and find structural problems or dry rot. We’ve worked on many restoration projects; it’s all about restoring what you find with all due care and attention to return it to its former glory,’ says Nick Viscusi, S&T Operations Manager. ‘There isn’t one room out of the 70 that is the same and we’ve replicated original features throughout the project. Every new element was bespoke and had to be site measured to ensure it fitted exactly.

We created a new Westmorland slate roof and at the centerpiece is an outstanding clock-tower that was falling to pieces. We restored all the original timber moldings and were able to commission Smith of Derby, the specialists that made the original bell and clock for St Olave’s, to carry out the clock restoration.’ Even the parquet floors have been restored. ‘The majority of the original floors have been taken up, re-machined and re-laid, sanded and stained to look like it would have done,’ says Hamish Anderson of flooring experts Campbell Contract Flooring. The stonework used throughout the project has also been carefully selected to complement the original. ‘We used two types, Scotch Buff York stone from Yorkshire and white Portland Stone from Devon,’ says stonemason Dave O’Donoghue from Drive Edgware Beautifully restored timber panelling and intricate carved plaster ceilings and cornicing are features throughout the building. The hotel’s centerpiece, the pan Asian Baluchi restaurant located in what was the Great Hall, boasts a vaulted cerulean blue ceiling, wood panelling and a gallery and the former Governors’ Room, which will be the cocktail bar, also has paneled walls and a plaster ceiling.

Cleaning can be a challenging process in busy areas especially when the building has access by members of the public. Staff can be educated in the correct way to move around areas being cleaned during working hours however it is slightly more difficult to keep the public safe in the same situation. It is essential therefore to carry out the cleaning process quickly and effectively and Duplex offers a range of floor cleaning and steam cleaning machines to suit the diverse requirements of the hotel and leisure sector.

Duplex 280

Featured here is the Duplex 280 whose compact design and contra-rotating brushes result in feather-light single-handed operation and truly unequalled forward and reverse manoeuvrability. Off-set brushes allow cleaning right up to the edge, along skirtings, under furniture and around fixtures. Following the success of the 280 mains model, a battery operated model is now available. Using the Duplex 280 Battery is fast and simple, there are no trailing cables to trip up operators or passers-by, get caught in doorways or around furniture. Like all the Duplex models, the 280 Battery uses minimal amounts of water to effectively clean the floor so the quick floor drying time means that slips are less likely than using conventional cleaning methods. Due to the lack of a mains cable the Duplex 280 Battery is ideal for in and around swimming pool areas or any situation where water ingress may be a hazard. This compact commercial floor cleaner has a battery running time of approximately one hour on carpet and more on smooth hard surfaces. The running time can be increased by having a second battery pack available which can be changed via the simple thumb screw clamp on the handle.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The 280 Battery cleans all types of flooring with ease including vinyl, ceramic tiles, nonslip resin, smooth resin, terrazzo, carpet including carpet tiles, wood, safety flooring, entrance matting, Polysafe, Timbersafe, Marley, Flotex, Altro, Tarkett and many more.

40

We offer free on-site, no obligation demonstrations so that potential customers can see for themselves the benefits of the Duplex range in their own environment. As you know training is extremely important for the correct and safe operation of any equipment, to this end we include a full training package with each machine for the staff that will be using it, this is carried out on site anywhere in mainland UK, free of charge when the machine is delivered.

Created by acclaimed interior designer, Anouska Hempel, Blakes Hotel occupies a row of black-painted Victorian townhouses on a quiet street in the heart of Chelsea in London.

A dark and sensual ‘couture’ hotel, Blakes exudes luxury with imagination and fine living with a sense of drama. On visiting it is hard not to be enraptured by the free spirit of the hotel, and it has a palatable sense of adventurous individuality. During the summer, the hotel commissioned the world-renown designer Matthew Williamson to revamp the hotel’s courtyard garden. The space, which is nestled in the heart of the hotel, is an openair oasis for guests to enjoy afternoon tea and delightful evening cocktails. The gorgeous Moroccan inspired tiles influenced the graphic wall mural Like all of his interior designs, Matthew began with the flooring, incorporating modern stone tiling, which was supplied by Solus Ceramics. Earlier this year, Mathew had worked with Nicola Hellett, The Creative Centre’s Manager on his own bathroom and contacted her again when this project was first mentioned to him. It was essential that Solus Ceramics could provide flooring that would be sympathetic to his design but at the same time make an impact.

The tiles, which were chosen from the Moroccan inspired Illustrate range, feature an elaborate and interesting geometric design, brought to life in a palette of expressive grey shades. All of the tiles are beautifully unique and each different piece showcases intriguing rustic effects such as light tonal imperfections. Each tile exhibits unique imperfections and variations The design of the tiles was used to inspire the creation of the stunning graphic mural, painted in pale hues of grey, blue and meline yellow, perfectly conveying the designers kaleidoscopic vision. Working with Harris Murray-Wicks Studio, the British designer refurbished the 775 sqft garden, adding a range of lush, leafy plants, trees, ferns and hostas. Eclectically styled furniture pulls together the other elements of the garden to convey a Mediterranean alfresco lifestyle, whilst fabrics and soft furnishings were taken from Matthew’s latest Osborne and Little collection. Grounds for expansion with luxury garden rooms

Hospitality managers are realising the benefits of additional (and upmarket) overnight suites in their grounds, via luxury garden rooms perfectly specified for their needs. Discerning customers are willing to pay a premium for stand out accommodation that has ‘wow’ factor and is suitably different – and Garden Hideouts are experiencing a surge of interest from the likes of boutique hotels, wedding venues and gastro pubs across the UK.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Space optimisation design skills, plus a top quality product that stands up to all the elements can throw at it, have helped position their contemporary and deluxe Arca garden rooms (which uniquely benefit from bespoke interior design) at the high end of a niche sector that is increasingly aspirational and on trend. Their best seller is 6x5 metres and expertly conceived as a self sufficient luxury hotel suite (there is also a Family version with separate bunkroom annexe at 12x5metres). It features a ‘statement’ en-suite bathroom by renowned German manufacturer Pelipal, a clever walk in wardrobe with illuminated vanity area, thermostatically controlled and digitally timed underfloor heating, superior cavity insulation, double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors and external hardwood decking, QuickStep water-repellent laminate flooring, plus all the designer bedroom furniture expected.

A particular USP is they’re interior designed to a level found in the most desirable hotels (or the ultimate bridal suite) and come ready fitted, fully furnished and accessorised to any look, feel or theme required - just add bedding, towels and toiletries and you’re in business. The exteriors are equally impressive, with ethically sourced slow grown hand oiled Western Red Cedar tongue and groove cladding delivering a stunning and highly durable finish. They benefit from a very robust form of construction as used in Canadian house building, plus for more rural locations, there is even the ‘greener’ option of the strongest, most weather-hardened living sedum roofs available on the market. Garden Hideouts MD, Chris Hill, explains: “We guarantee the high levels of craftmanship and professionalism the hospitality sector demands. It’s a complete solution and genuine turnkey operation with all connections to mains, sewerage, electricity and water included. Quite simply, luxury comes as standard with the Arca deluxe hotel garden room, which provides extremely high levels of comfort and convenience – across all seasons - that both impresses guests and encourages return visits.” These truly opulent outdoor hotel suites cost from just £34,950 plus VAT, so to arrange a full (and free) site/ground survey and product demonstration, call 01905 794445, or visit the website at www.gardenhideouts.co.uk
