New Hotel Opens in Germany’s Iconic Cultural City V

ienna House, Austria’s largest hotel group, have announced a new hotel in central Leipzig due to open on 6th July 2018. To celebrate the opening of the stylish hotel, guests can get a special deal on all bookings taken until 31st July 2018.

The hotel is the newest addition to Leipzig’s beautiful old town, ideally located near sights such as the gothic St. Thomas Church that has played host to influential musicians including JS Bach. The hotel combines urban design with features reflecting the city’s vibrant arts scene, along with offering a high standard of facilities.

UK’s first Radisson RED hotel opens in Glasgow

The eagerly anticipated Radisson RED Glasgow opens its doors today in Scotland’s largest city, ready to shake up the UK’s hotel scene. With a prestigious past dating back to the 12th century, award-winning Farnham Castle must be one of the most historic venues in the UK – but there’s nothing old fashioned about the way it runs its business.

Catering for hundreds of weddings a year, and even more meetings and conferences, the world-class hotel and its five acres of grounds have built a solid reputation as the go-to destination when something a little different is required.

Farnham Castle uses a hotel property management system (PMS) to organise every aspect of running its busy hotel operations, from online booking to food and beverage management, front desk and even housekeeping management.

Farnham has become well-known as both a boutique hotel and a stunning venue, providing a unique combined hotel and venue experience.

Impressed by the way the system unobtrusively helps the hotel and its staff to deliver excellent customer service, Farnham has recently added a ground-breaking venue management system to create perfect control over its meetings and weddings business.

So it’s not surprising that General Manager Robert Wright says the customer experience is paramount – and explains why Farnham Castle has implemented not one but two up-tothe-minute software systems to work quietly away in the background so everything runs perfectly.

Robert said: “We’ve been using the PMS since July or August 2017, and we installed the venue management system following that.” The desired results have been quickly achieved.

“We were on Excel spreadsheets before we moved to the venue management system, and it’s definitely provided us with the ability to manage our events better,” said Robert.

The technology saves time by eliminating paper diaries and the possibility of double booking. Everything is in one place and easily accessible, and many routine tasks are automated to save staff time and hassle.

The venue management software also eliminates the time-consuming process of typing up function sheets in Word, and provides easy task management for all staff, who simply log into the system and see at a glance what tasks managers have allocated for them to do.

“The system helps us to manage our costs and track our revenue so much more efficiently,” said Robert.

“When we’re planning events we can put everything into the same format at the same time, which is very time effective for our staff.”

The venue management system also makes sure organisations never miss out on following up any valuable sales leads, and makes billing far simpler and more accurate. Comprehensive reports give the venue organisers an end-toend view of their business in real time.

“The system captures our sales leads effectively and puts them all in the same format, which means not only do we never miss a lead, we can also log statistics and monitor what’s working,” said Robert.

Business is pretty non-stop at Farnham Castle, set in the pretty town it is named after on the Surrey/Hampshire border.

“We do around 200 events just over the Summer, about three months – we host lots of weddings, and some smaller conferences and meetings too,” said Robert.

Both systems – roomMaster PMS and Rendezvous Events - are supplied and supported by NFS Technology Group, a leading supplier of hospitality software in the UK and elsewhere.

Life is pretty full-on for the Farnham team, and Robert says they appreciate the operational support they receive from the systems – and from NFS, which has a 24/7 helpdesk manned by experts just in case anything goes amiss.

anasonic has introduced an intelligent new Hybrid VRF to the UK hospitality sector, combining electric (EHP) and gas-driven heat pump (GHP) technology for optimal efficiency for cooling and heating. The new Hybrid VRF reduces energy costs by automatically switching between its GHP and EHP; it also provides a free supply of domestic hot water (DHW) - ideal for high demand applications, such as hotels and apartment blocks.

The Hybrid VRF comprises of a master GHP unit, an EHP unit and a specialised intelligent controller. This controller monitors usage, energy demand and air conditioning load to calculate if GHP, EHP or a combination of both working simultaneously, will deliver the best savings. The intelligent controller will then intuitively switch the Hybrid VRF system between GHP and EHP to optimise efficiency.

The result is a significant reduction in electrical demand during peak times when the air conditioning load ratio is high, for example

Installation and maintenance requirements are further reduced due to the unit’s unified refrigerant cycle.

Another significant benefit of Panasonic’s Hybrid VRF is that it can provide a free supply of DHW. This is achieved by capturing the waste heat generated by the GHP engine during operation and using it to heat water. This feature contributes to huge savings for large-scale commercial applications with a high demand of DHW, such as hotels.

The Hybrid VRF is managed by a centralised intelligent controller (CZ-256ESMC3), which monitors energy consumption and calculates load demand, intuitively switching between GHP and EHP for the most efficient operation. Its user-friendly interface also features multiple energy saving modes, including ‘Smart Multi’, which can be easily customised to increase efficiency.

Cheers! Celebrating the success of home-grown tipples

Beacon, Britain’s leading purchasing company, is shining a spotlight on home-grown wine, following its research which named Made in Britain the top trend amongst diners for 2018.

It has been an exceptional time for English wine, with a record number of bottles of UK-made wine reaching the market last year, up 64% from 2016, as vineyards release more sparkling and specialist wines than ever before . This is set to continue, with wine production predicted to reach 10 million bottles by 2020, according to Beacon supplier Alliance Wine.

Not only are more varieties available, sales are also soaring. Insight from Beacon’s supplier Molson Coors, states that sales of English sparkling wines increased by 25% in the last financial year, accounting for an additional 350,000 bottles sold versus last year.

Alliance Wine also reveals that sparkling wine is the only wine sector currently in growth, in part due to the demand from UK drinkers, and most of the recent plantings are to produce the sparkling tipple.

Within our guest rooms we offer Sky Select. We have a varied demographic of people in this hotel, including business travellers and a lot of families, and Sky offers the variation that we need to satisfy them all.

How have your guests reacted to the Sky Select offering?

If guests know they can watch Sky Atlantic in their room, and watch their favourite TV programme, Game of Thrones for example, they’ll choose to stay at our hotels versus another.

One of the key selling factors of Sky Select was that we can easily review the most popular channels and swap them in and out very quickly with Sky directly. Another benefit is the Sky Bright Box system which delivers the content. Previously, we would have had several boxes in our comms room which took up a lot of space. The Bright Box is one server and took less than a day to install.

One day the Sky team came in and the next, we had 30 new HD channels. It’s simple to maintain and it’s good to know that if we have a problem, we can call on Sky to help resolve any issues quickly.

Chantelle Lighting is renowned for providing exquisite lighting to the hospitality sector and Hotel Indigo, Durham, is no exception The stunning, Grade II 1890 listed building boasts period features such as tiled marble staircase, wood panelling and stained glass windows.

Former home to the Durham City Council, a circular debating chamber and lobby room has remained and become the setting for the new restaurant and cocktail bar.

Chantelle Lighting was commissioned to provide lighting for the 100-cover Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill, in the 83-bed hotel.

The lighting needed to reflect the existing features, creating a warm traditional feel throughout, with a slight modern edge.

Taking pride of place above the restaurant is a bespoke multi ring feature chandelier in an antique finish with 48 individual pendant drops and acrylic shades, handmade by artisan craftsmen and women in Chantelle’s Lancashire home.

The London-based restaurant was the perfect candidate for the latest additions to CK Direct’s product range. During the restaurant’s 8-week refurbishment, the existing extract systems within the kitchen and rooftop were stripped out and replaced.

With an annual prize fund of £15,000, the competition offers an exciting challenge for new and emerging UK based sculptors. As well as a Judges Winner, a Public Speaks winner is awarded to the sculpture that receives the most public votes during the exhibition.

ICONIC MID-CENTURY BRITISH FURNITURE COLLECTION REISSUED An iconic mid-century furniture range by legendary designers John and Sylvia Reid has been reissued thanks to a collaboration between their son Dominic Reid OBE and Nicholas Radford, son of the original manufacturer.

A resurgence in popularity of modernist style – increasingly seen across the hotel and hospitality sector, as well as in homes and offices – inspired the pair to relaunch the John & Sylvia Reid S-Range, designed for Stag by the Reids in the 1960s.

One of the most enduring factors of the midcentury look is the simplicity of form which works well with both retro and contemporary interiors.

The Reids took their inspiration from the prevailing Scandinavian designers of the time, with low slung cabinets in teak, projecting ‘tab’ handles and V-shaped legs in satin-plated steel.

The range includes several innovative design features, including the 270 degree hinges on the cabinet doors (specifically created for easy access to the interior), swivel feet for extra stability on the dining chairs, finger jointed trays and solid beech drawers.

Perhaps one of the most recognisable items is the beautiful modular slender sideboards, which sit low on the V-shaped legs. The attractive

external teak veneers on robust plywood are contrasted with the beech veneer interior.

The upholstered chairs, all tested to Crib 5, are perfect for on-trend lobbies or office breakout areas. Not only do they offer the best in modernist style, they are also designed to support the body.

The upholstered furniture includes a two-seater sofa with arms, an arm chair and an armless chair. All of the S-Range upholstery is manufactured from wool based fabric and is available in a range of colourways.

Background Ensconced within acres of award-winning gardens, The Salutation is a luxury boutique hotel located in the medieval town of Sandwich. A gateway to the vibrant and storied towns of the Kentish coast, Edwin Lutyens’ private-house masterpiece has been completely re-invigorated through successive restorations, featuring 16 guest bedrooms, restaurant and gardens.

The hotel is going through a period of transformation to build for the future, having installed a large commercial kitchen and hired a Michelin-star chef to launch its new restaurant, which will become the focal point for the business.

As part of this transformation, the hotel recognised the importance of improving its technology infrastructure to provide a premium guest experience and future-proof the business for emerging trends.

With today’s consumers living increasingly connected lifestyles, they now expect a robust wireless network as part of the hotel experience. Therefore, The Salutation needed to deploy a powerful WiFi network to meet this growing demand, while also streamlining other business applications.

Listed building status: The Salutation is a Grade I listed building, meaning it is a site of exceptional interest and is required to adhere to extremely strict requirements over changes made to the building’s interior or exterior.

The walls are also up to one metre thick and wiring is difficult – drilling holes in the walls to mount equipment is not allowed and any equipment deployed in the building should not be visible.

Previously the hotel was using a domestic router to power its WiFi network, which was not capable of delivering sufficient wireless connectivity to the business or its guests.

This causes two issues: mobile phone signal and WiFi coverage are largely non-existent within the premises and surrounding gardens. This means guests are completely cut off from the outside world and staff struggle to communicate with each other, especially in emergency situations.

Multiple sites: The hotel has three main sites and a number of outbuildings and public gardens spread across 3.7 acres. These sites operated independently, so there was a need to bring them together on one centralised network. The hotel also needed to keep its main administration network separate from its guest network, for security reasons.

Solutions and Benefits The Salutation engaged the services of Zyxel partner The Ardent Group, which conducted a full wireless site survey and recommended deploying Zyxel’s Nebula cloud network management solution.

This enables the hotel to remotely manage all of its sites on one centralised cloud-based network, from any location.

A managed Gigabit Ethernet switch was installed in the main building, supported

by Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches and 20 Nebula access points (APs) deployed throughout the premises. Each building has its own internet breakout via Zyxel’s VDSL routers.

The Zyxel switches provide a private virtual LAN (VLAN), enabling the hotel to set up certain networks in independent simulated environments on the same LAN, bringing added network security for guests and staff.

To overcome the issue with the thickness of the walls, The Ardent Group deployed Nebula APs in every guest room and public space to provide sufficient wireless coverage. Because the Nebula APs are a compact size and have PoE capability, it was easy to install them in a discreet manner; thus adhering to the listed building requirements.

The Salutation now has a high performance, fully scalable wireless network, meaning staff and guests can enjoy fast connectivity throughout the estate. The hotel is also able to run a number of other services on the WiFi, such as its point of sale (POS), phone and sound systems, as well as network ready smart TVs in every guest room to meet the demand for streaming services and content, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

To overcome the lack of mobile phone signal, staff are now able to use the WhatsApp mobile messenger app as the primary means of communication throughout the estate. The new wireless network can also be used for WiFi calling and Voice over IP (VoIP).

Fast connectivity for staff and guests was the bedrock, but the hotel also needed to future-proof the network to meet new customer-driven demands.

With the number of online services only expected to grow, The Salutation now has a fully scalable network backbone that can easily accommodate any new services.

The Ardent Group manages the entire network remotely via the Nebula management portal (Nebula Control Centre), providing the hotel with peace of mind that any network issues or troubleshooting can be handled by IT experts, before staff or guests are even aware of an issue arising. This means the leadership team can focus solely on running the business and looking after its guests.

With the new network infrastructure in place, The Salutation is able to embrace new ways of streamlining business operations and deliver the most premium experience for guests.

For example, the new WiFi network will enable the hotel to better utilise its grounds. Opening up a new bar in the gardens would simply involve adding new wireless APs and POS devices to the network, ensuring it is up and running within minutes.

Ilchester hotel officially reopens following a £250,000 redevelopment Ilchester hotel and restaurant, The Ilchester Arms, is to re-launch following a refurbishment and expansion funded by NatWest. Situated in the picturesque village just north of Yeovil, the Church Street hotel officially reopens later this month following a £250,000, three-year redevelopment.

Husband and wife owners Brendan and Lucy McGee were supported by NatWest in acquiring the business’ neighbouring residential dwelling. The property has since been converted following a large scale refurbishment project which started in 2015. The development includes nine new en-suite rooms, some of which are equipped with specific facilities to enable them to better cater for disabled visitors, families and dog owners. The couple have also finished refurbishment of the reception and garden areas as well as two new meeting and private dining rooms.

Brendan and Lucy also own the nearby Bull Inn – another successful pub and restaurant. Both sites currently employ 28 members of staff, which has increased now that The Ilchester has grown its restaurant capacity from 60 to 100 covers.

Lucy McGee said: “From the start, we were intent on acquiring the next door residence to expand our business.

We’re thrilled that we are now able to re-launch The Ilchester and expand our offering to our customers.

“Without the care and attention of the NatWest team we wouldn’t have received the support we needed. We’re now looking forward to delivering an enhanced experience and attracting new customers.”
