THINK DESIGN
THINK HOMAPAL Over the years, hardly any other material has proven its worth in interior design to the extent in which the laminate has done. Looks, feel and function ae combined to get the interplay of elements into all-embracing spatial concepts in a way that couldnt be more natural
Above all, it has always been the genuine- metal coated laminates and magnetic boards that are associated with the HOMAPAL name. Yet being the scenes in Herzberg, many more variations of this modern material are created and produced.
It provides architects, carpenters and joiners in furniture-making and interior designs with the basis for producing the last word in creative design - in doctors' surgeries, bars, hotels, clubs and restaurants, on cruise ships and in shop fitting.

Studio Gang Designs Mixed-Use Hotel Inspired by Aspen Trees in Denver Studio Gang and Denver-based real estate firm Urban Villages have revealed a new mixed-use, 13-story hotel in Denver, Colorado. The 145,000-sf building is called ‘Populus’ and will be located next to Civic Center Park. Opening to the city and the Rocky Mountains beyond, the hotel aims to become a new social center in downtown. On it’s prominent corner site, the building was made to connect Denver’s civic, arts, and commercial districts.
A Hotelier & Hospitality Design
s the iconic element of the project, the hotel’s windows take on a distinctive shape informed by the growth process of aspen trees, a symbol of Colorado. As the trees grow, they shed their lower branches, leaving behind dark, eye-shaped marks on the papery bark of their trunks. The team explained that the windows grow up to 30 feet in height to frame entrances and views into the lobby, restaurant, and amenity spaces. “Each vertical scallop is the width of a hotel room, and its windows change in size in response to public and private spaces.”
6
On the exterior, the “lids” of each window stretch outward according to solar orientation to shade the interior and improve the building’s energy performance, as well as channel rainwater. Hotel guests will experience views of the nearby State Capitol and Civic Center Park, as well as the mountains beyond. Some views also show occupiable windows, transformed into seating or desks. Above, a green roof terrace provides a place to socialize and create a habitat for local wildlife and insects. “Forming an essential interface between inside and outside, the distinctive windows expand the hotel rooms to the city and Rocky Mountains beyond,” said Jeanne Gang. “Their shape is inspired by the growth pattern seen on the iconic aspen trees of Colorado, whose branches produce ‘eyes’ on the trunks’ surface.” The project is currently in the building permit process. Construction is expected to begin later this year with the goal of delivery in 2023.
Crerar Hotels invests £500k into developing ‘boutique experience’ at Glencoe Inn Scottish hotel group Crerar Hotels is to invest £500k into developing The Glencoe Inn into a ‘boutique hotel experience’ as the business prepares for reopening.
A new Bistro will feature a menu with native grass-fed Scottish beef from the Crerar Home Farm and Scottish seafood, as well as pizzas served from a new outdoor word-fired oven. The Bistro will run alongside the hotel’s established bar and grill, The Gathering. Crerar Hotels’ investment in The Glencoe Inn comes just months after the group announced a project with over £3m being spent to develop The Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa. Both projects will aim to be completed by midApril. Chris Wayne-Wills, CEO of Crerar Hotels, said: “These major investments in Mull and Glencoe reaffirm our commitment both to the guest experience in these iconic locations and also the employee experience with Crerar Hotels. We are further committing to guarantee at least living wage earnings for all employees at these hotels alongside real career development and training for all of our colleagues.” Paddy Crerar CBE, Chairman of Crerar Hotels, said: “The challenging circumstances over the past year have driven our appetite to breathe life back into the Scottish tourism and hospitality industries, and we aim to be ready to welcome guests as soon as we are able to open our doors.”
The Cadogan introduces Sleep Concierge service Belmond hotel The Cadogan has announced its partnership with sleep expert Malminder Gill in an effort to blend hospitality and mental wellness. The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel, is planning to launch its collaboration with a complimentary Sleep Concierge service once the hotel reopens after lockdown. The service will be available in each bedroom and will include a sleep-inducing meditative recording via the hotel’s app, a sleep menu of different pillows and a bedtime tea service, plus scented pillow mist. An optional weighted blanket is available too. The next morning, guests can experience a motivation recording created by Malminder Gill, an expert with over 15 years’ experience in sleep and managing anxious thoughts. Gill said: “Sleep is the most important thing we can learn to master, and when staying in one of The Cadogan’s sumptuous suites, guests can listen to my exclusive recording and drift off.” At The Cadogan, guests will also be able to book an in-person, one-on-one appointment with Gill. This has a starting price of £500 (US$683, €568) and requires advance booking. Additionally, guests looking for a more in-depth wellbeing focus will have the option to visit the hotel’s exclusive spa suite for massages, facials and beauty treatments, supplied by luxury British product house Bamford. A recent study by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), called Defining the Mental Wellness Economy, named senses, spaces and sleep as contributing US$49.6 billion (€41.7bn, £37.6bn) to the mental wellness segment (US$121bn, €101.6bn, £91.8bn) of the global wellness economy.

LinenMe’s Waffle Towels Demonstrate the Pantone Color Pick for 2021! Every year Pantone’s trend forecasters compile extensive research to find a color that represents or somehow embodies the design themes for that year. For their Color of the Year 2021 they chose two colors instead of the usual single selection. The chosen tones are Illuminating (a citrus yellow) and Ultimate Gray (a solid mid-gray).
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
And we were delighted to see that Frankfurt’s leading interiors and design exhibition, Ambiente, featured LinenMe’s graphite grey waffle towels as examples of this year’s Pantone color pick on their blog.
8
The two chosen colors work on their own but were deliberately selected as a duo. Pantone’s Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman explains why: “Together, the solid Ultimate Gray and the radiant Illuminating convey a positive message of inner strength. Practical and rock solid, but at the same time warming and optimistic – this is a colour combination for hope and resilience. Strength and confidence are nourishment for the human soul.” And as we can all do with some hope, unity and
strength in these difficult times, we’re 100% on board with this sentiment. We know you love to stay on top of interior trends whilst shopping sustainably and mindfully. It’s easy to update your home with these new color trends and stay true to your principles. Cantina Goccia Launches Wine in World’s First Paper Bottle Italian winery, Cantina Goccia has become the world’s first vineyard to use paper bottles earlier this year, and, after two sellout limited runs, plans to make the paper bottles a permanent fixture in their range. The unique bottles, from UK packaging maker Frugalpac, are made from 94% recycled paper, making them one of the most sustainable bottle options in the world. They are also much lighter, making them easier to transport, and are just as recyclable as glass. The first wine to go on sale in the paper bottle was Cantina Goccia’s award-winning 3Q, an unwooded Sangiovese red with a hint of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, back in July 2020. Following two sell-out runs, the vineyard has announced plans to expand its paper bottle range to include a white wine, and a brand-new blend of rose. Cantina Goccia owner Ceri Parke, said:
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
“We were delighted to make history by launching the Frugal Bottle with our awardwinning 3Q wine. The feedback from industry and consumers alike has been overwhelmingly positive and we could not be more pleased. We’ve decided to commit fully to the Frugal Bottle and will be adding a white wine and a rose to our paper bottle collection.
10
The bottle weighs just 83g before its filled, almost five times lighter than a normal glass bottle, making it easier to carry and lighter to transport, further helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the drinks industry.
“For us, the Frugal Bottle is about achieving a considerably more sustainable form of packaging for an industry crying out for innovation. We believe the Frugal Bottle has the potential to decarbonise the drinks industry and we’re pleased that we’re leading the way.”
Ceri added;“When some of our top hotel customers saw samples of our paper wine bottle, there was no hesitation in their minds that this type of bottle would be well received in their dining rooms. The launch of the Frugal Bottle is a big leap in sustainability without compromising wine quality.
The 75cl Frugal Bottle is made from 94% recycled paper with a food-grade liner to hold the wine. It can be refrigerated like a standard wine bottle, but because of its unique construction, the liquid cools quicker and remains chilled for longer, making it ideal for al fresco drinking.
“We passionately believe this is a real game changer for the wine industry, allowing us to sell and transport our awardwinning wines in a much more sustainable way whilst still providing a beautiful bottle.”
The paper bottles can be printed with 360-degree branding and the vineyard has plans to launch colourful, fully branded bottles to its international markets in the coming months. “The beauty of the bottle is that you can fully brand the entire bottle,” said Ceri. “We’re having fun developing a range of wines that will grab your attention in-store. The Frugal Bottle has the potential to shake up the look and feel of supermarket wine aisles, and we are looking forward to being part of the change.” To get your hands on Cantina Goccia’s 3Q in a paper bottle, visit Woodwinters Wines & Whiskies, (online and instore) or selected Daylesford Organic stores in London. www.cantinagoccia.com

he niu Loom hotel sits at the heart of what used to be lovingly referred to as Cottonopolis. What was the beating heart of the UK textiles industry, Manchester now attracts business and pleasure visitors by the thousands. To help accommodate these guests in a fitting setting, hotel group NOVUM Hospitality called on the expertise of Core Real Estate to develop an interior design for a new hotel that would use the fabric of the City’s rich history to create a vibrant new hospitality hub. Core Real Estate used various architectural and design elements to bring the buzz of the city’s old mills back to life in the foyer, bar and bedrooms. Cotton reels and weaving looms run seamlessly through the colours and imagery on the walls, and also in the specifications for the all-important furnishings and fittings. The Contract Furniture Group was brought in to ensure the theme was comprehensively
carried through everything from the industrial bar to the upholstered seating and case goods, as project manager Ed Brown confirms: “The niu Loom is a stunning project, and one I’m very proud to have worked on. Core Real Estates came to us with a very tight brief as the theme was already developed, but I’m glad to say we were able to help with the creative process through extensive option analysis and sampling. The end result is a wonderful blend of modern style and historic feel, where you cant help but get the impression you are somewhere that might be new, but already has great cultural significance to the area.” Final installation at the niu Loom was completed last year, with furnishings including: Cartoon, Industrial, Libby and French Bistro style chairs; Crank Ishwar and Girder base tables; and beds from the

beginning of this development, they were aware of a setback: A variety of video conference tools allow for easy connection of people from all over the world. But the simultaneous interpreters required to facilitate smooth understanding had to travel on site to render their services, which meant high expenses and a lot of logistical effort – the greater the number of languages involved, the more complex.
In June 2020, two industry experts – Benjamin Bühl (Dolmetscheragentur24 GmbH) and Mike Bertsch (B&B Technik + Events) – pool their competences, establish BeMi Virtuell GmbH and launch Qonda, a browser-based remote interpreting platform. It is an online service for booking and assigning simultaneous interpreters for online conferences – in any language. Instead of having to be present on site of the conference, the interpreters can now dial in to the event from wherever they are located to provide their interpretation. Qonda is compatible with all common video platforms but can also be used on its own as a stand-alone video conference platform. The founders Benjamin Bühl and Mike Bertsch are old hands at the conference industry. With a total of 17 years of experience in the language services sector, Benjamin Bühl has been managing Dolmetscheragentur24 GmbH for five years. Managing Director of B&B Technik + Events for more than 20 years, Mike Bertsch is an expert for event technology and organization. For some time, both men have observed a strong increase in international online conferences which will certainly be strengthened further by the current Covid-19 pandemic. Right from the
Benjamin Bühl says: “In a world where it takes just a few clicks to connect thousands of people from several countries in a video conference, we think that there should be an uncomplicated and readily available remote solution for real-time communication in different languages. Our aim is to make simultaneous remote interpreting as easy to handle as a video conference.” Suitable for any type of international online conferences – with up to 100,000 participants world-wide In cooperation with experienced simultaneous interpreters, the two founders developed Qonda, a new and simple tool which fulfills this aim. Via the Internet, companies can book and assign interpreters for multilanguage online conferences – in all language combinations available on the market. They can use their own tried-and-tested interpreters,
or book via a translation agency. Whereas the commonly used video platforms offer a limited number of language channels, Qonda has no restrictions as to the number. This revolutionizes the processes, because the entire assignment of simultaneous interpreters can now be handled online for the first time. While Qonda is compatible with all the usual platforms, it can also be used as a standalone all-in-one video conference tool. Located in Frankfurt am Main, the servers are in compliance with the GDPR. “For us, uncomplicated, technically perfect handling and high-quality language services are as important as ensuring that Qonda is suitable for a wide range of possible applications. Qonda is designed for the providing interpretation of video conferences, video streams and audio transmissions, as well as hybrid live and on-site meetings. Our customers are international corporate groups and organizations but also mediumsized enterprises. They increasingly use Qonda for board meetings, press conferences, product presentations, webinars or training courses, some of them with up to 20,000 participants from all over the world,” explains Mike Bertsch.

Domaine Gayda scores on two counts Heads, Chemin de Moscou; Tails, Sélection Grenache Gris. Though both IGP Pays d’Oc, they are as different as the two sides of a shiny coin, but offer the ultimate in pleasure.

hemin de Moscou, the iconic label by Domaine Gayda in Brugairolles, Aude, has been a resounding success since its inception. It is named after a path that leads from the village to the top of a hill. “There was a tree at the top that acted as a beacon for the intrepid pioneers of the air mail routes and this is where we built our winery in 2004”, recalls Vincent Chansault, the winemaker and co-founder of an estate where a breath of fresh air blows, literally and figuratively. Right off the bat, Chemin de Moscou went against the grain of French appellation conventions, focusing on a blend of Syrah (the majority varietal), Grenache and Cinsault grown over a patchwork of soil types and climates, including limestone soils in La Livinière, schist in the Col de la Dona, gneiss in Latour de France and calcareous sandstone in Brugairolles.
A turning point Without disavowing its inimitable style, Chemin de Moscou has turned a new page in its history. “In 2017, the earliest and one of the most
successful vintages at the estate, we started to vary the vessels used for maturing our wine over 24 months, using 500-litre casks, wooden vats, amphorae and eggs”, continues Vincent Chansault. The resultant wine, now the 2018 vintage, is a high-end red fermented with no added sulphur and delivering an assertively open, rounded, supple style. Its impeccably balanced, intense aromatic expression of dark fruits and spices, complexity and length on the palate make it a wine that can be savoured now - or in 15 years’ time!
Boutique This is not the only surprise lurking among Domaine Gayda’s IGP Pays d’Oc portfolio. Tasted blind, it is difficult to know exactly what wine is behind the Sélection Grenache Gris
label. Turns out, it’s a one-of-a-kind white wine made from old vines in the Opoul winegrowing site in the Pyrenees-Orientales. “In 2014, we decided to hive off the Grenache Gris during harvesting, then use very gentle, whole-cluster pressing and fermentation in 16-hectolitre eggs so that it could develop the fat characters of a lees-aged wine, with a totally hands-off approach”, explains the person who transformed an experiment into a stroke of genius. Vincent Chansault successfully created a very fresh wine from red clay soils that are renowned for their heat. The 2018 Sélection Grenache Gris displays extraordinary aromas, acidity and minerality and not only encapsulates the vintage, the site, the grape variety and the vineyard block, it also mirrors constant research in the winery. It is the jewel in the crown of a boutique range, which is often gone in a heartbeat - yet another reason to taste it without further ado! Atelier Alain Ellouz launches a brand new collection of alabaster table lamps: nomadic lamps .édition
T
LYRA, GAMA, MONA and ATHENA are the first pieces from the new .édition collection, yet another powerful expression of the style and know-how of Atelier Alain Ellouz. These alabaster nomadic lamps offer eight hours of use at a time, providing you with light all throughout the day. Just a gentle touch turns on their soft light, offering a warm and cozy ambiance ideal for daydreaming or romantic evenings.
hey add elegance to any interior and reveal the extraordinary, hidden richness of alabaster and its remarkable power of attraction. Each lamp is the fruit of inspirations drawn from alabaster’s patterns, evocative of currents and airy wafts set deep within the stone. Set at the core of the stone, light passes through alabaster’s deeply-ingrained patterns. Suggesting smoky swirls, spirals and clouds, these patterns are beneath the surface and appear suspended, encapsulated for eternity.
GAMA elicits contemporary architectural code, combining curves and sleek lines. Its edges are fine and precise; its proportions are perfect. GAMA is a composition of two, differently-sized inverted conical shapes, separated by a delicate trimming in gilt brass. The light that diffuses from the upper end amplifies alabaster’s intrinsic beauty and gives the composition a timeless elegance.
LYRA
MONA
LYRA evokes a precious and contemporary candy jar thanks to its sleek, cylindrical design. Its surface is delicate to the touch. The elegant brass ornament serves as the lamp’s dimmer and switch. The LYRA cordless lamp diffuses a soothing light, offering a cozy, mellow atmosphere. Plug it into a power supply and it becomes your bedside lamp.
The simple form of a half-ellipsoid. From this outwardly simplistic design emerges that characteristic motion we find in the structure of back-lit alabaster. The sleek, straight lines of the gilt brass lamp switch create a dialog with the lamp’s shape. MONA draws its strength from a subdued design. The hand is irresistibly attracted to the stone and the eye is captivated by the density of the light.

A next-generation water recycling system, unveiled by water infrastructure systems specialist SDS, is promising to boost efforts to save water by offering significantly improved investment returns for developers and operators of hotels and leisure facilities.
Flagship Water Recycling Technology Delivers Cash Savings
T
The GWOD’s small footprint, together with its ability to provide, on-demand, quality recycled water whenever needed, makes it capable of significantly improved investment payback when compared to conventional Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) greywater systems, especially for larger-scale systems, SDS water recycling specialist Kevin Reed explains: “In the past, MBR systems have tended to be the technology of choice. Our ultrafiltration system typically processes water at about 2m3 per hour per filter, compared to an MBR system which processes at about 4m3 per day per membrane. As a result of the faster treatment, the storage volume, and therefore the tank size, is considerably smaller than for a typical MBR system. “Using ultrafiltration also makes the system responsive to demand at peak times. Unlike MBR, our system does not depend on having to build up a biomass of bacteria for peak operation. High quality water is available immediately on start up. This also means that the system can be shut down when not in use, for example in an office block at weekends or holidays. In this way the system saves energy, too.” The SDS Greywater on Demand system can pay back in as little as
seven years, although actual return on investment will depend on the size of the system and the local Water Company charges. SDS offers a full design and installation service to support Public Health Engineers, developers and commercial operators and ensure correct system sizing for maximum savings. In the GWOD system, greywater is collected and then pumped through a disk pre-filter system and dosed with a small amount of chlorine before entering the ultrafilters. The treated water is then stored, ready for use, in a separate tank and pumped, as needed, around the building. The GWOD’s ultrafiltration system is a highly-efficient membrane with automated integral backwash, that delivers treated water to near drinking water standards. The compact design can be adapted to add as many ultrafilters as required to deliver the amount of recycled water needed to service the building. When combined with SDS’s smart SYMBiotICTM cloud-based data monitoring and control, SDS GWOD can be configured to provide real-time performance measures, condition monitoring with alarms and alerts, as well as trend mapping to aid with preventative maintenance. Regular reports of water saving performance can also be output. Greywater is waste water, for example, from baths, showers and handbasins, that can be filtered, treated and then reused for non-
drinking purposes such as toilet flushing, laundry or garden irrigation. The principle is already being widely adopted, especially by hotels and large office blocks. In London, where planning laws encourage water recycling, up to 20% of new buildings include greywater reuse systems. Reed continues: “With the impact of climate change, increased periods of drought and water stress are predicted. So, it will be imperative for sustainable buildings to adapt and install water saving measures as standard. Up to 60% of the water used in commercial buildings, such as office blocks or hotels, is highlytreated drinking water that is used, wastefully, to flush toilets or irrigate gardens, where the level of treatment is simply not needed. More costefficient reuse of water will benefit water companies by decreasing the demand on an already stressed supply network.” “Any technology must first demonstrate it is commercially viable, before its environmental benefits can be exploited. New technologies like ultrafiltration and smart controls can lead the change, by making water reuse systems more accessible and attractive commercially.” The development of the SDS Greywater on Demand system follows on from its acquisition of the water recycling business of established industry leader Waterscan in 2019 For more information visit www.sdslimited.com.

he SDS GWOD uses a state-ofthe-art ultrafiltration technology, unique to the UK, together with smart controls, to deliver a space-saving, low-energy and responsive water reuse system. The SDS Greywater on Demand (GWOD) system is set to be a flagship technology of the company’s water reuse product range. It is also one of the first to be equipped with SDS’s SYMBiotICTM automated smart controls incorporating cloud-based monitoring to ensure that process performance is optimised.

Private Island Influencers show their 50 Million fans how to travel safely during a pandemic
P
rivate Island, a social event app, has organized a plethora of well-known influencers to a Hawaii Friendsgiving, with name on the trip like Nickelodeon star Isaak Presley, Tik Tokers Colie Nuanez, India Good, Carson Paw, Isaak Presley, Mishka Silva, Sam Frank, Katelyn Elizabeth, Sebastian Topete, Cristopher Romero, Lauren Kettering, Giovanny Valencia, Quinton Griggs and Cynthia Parker confirmed as attendees the the first official event on Maui, Hawaii hosted personally by CEO and app creator Nicholas Duro. The exclusive Maui event will include luxury hotel accommodations, fine food and loads of activities meant to get the blood pumping. Anyone up for skydiving, jet skis, and motocross under the warm tropical sun? It sure beats a zoom meeting in my pajamas. Private Island is making a point to show the world that there’s a light at the end of this long tunnel of quarantine for travel, socializing, and group fun while also maintaining respect for pandemic regulations. The group has received a lot of hate already for this decision but firmly agree that travel and social interactions can be amazing experiences and yet still executed safely. The group has been spotted by a number of sources driving around the island of Maui this week in their 4 Cadillac Escalades, but only from their villa to the adventure destinations with no exposure to the outside world.

There is a special surprise event that the group has planned for Thanksgiving Day.

Any of us are rightfully skeptical of planning an event in this climate, as we all are more than aware of the dangers and limitations COVID-19 poses to large group events. Private Island strays far away from the impersonal planning that you might find on other applications. With Private Island, the user (host) is not only in control of how an event is financed and planned, but is able to keep precise tabs on who is allowed to join an event and can go as far as mandating recent COVID tests as a requirement for entry. In statements made by CEO and app creator Nicholas Duro, he has clearly conveyed his utmost concern for Islanders’ their health, safety, and wellbeing. This web-service is practically tailored around the “new normal” that COVID has imposed on people across the world. The launch party itself will be ardently restricted to party-goers who have undergone COVID tests less than three days before boarding the plane to Maui, and Islanders will be split into quarantine “activity groups'' to astronomically reduce any spread. Private Island is an event planning application that has just launched on ios and android platforms, and has already begun turning heads throughout a broad demographic of adventure-hungry users. Sol Duc is Aston Manor’s first foray into the hard seltzer market and is part of its ongoing investment into new production capabilities and resources.
Calli O’Brien, marketing controller at Aston Manor said: “Consumers more than ever are seeking balanced options to support their lifestyle, but with this, the expectation for full flavour and no compromise still stands. They want transparency and honesty in their products, with great taste to boot. “Sol Duc is all about purity and transparency; in contrast to the fermented alcohol bases seen in some other hard seltzers. Sol Duc is simply sparkling water, a dash of vodka and natural flavouring. Why make it any more complicated than that? We also wanted to be playful with flavour. Our dual flavours
are designed to provide an initial flavour hit, followed by a lingering intensity, to spark interest and give something to discover and enjoy. This is not another ‘citrus’ flavour. Our consumers are curious, and we wanted to play up to that!
Cider Company, which is based in Washington, we have gained invaluable insight and understanding of the hard seltzer category following its phenomenal success in the US. With Sol Duc we’re aiming to emulate that success in the UK.”

Reasons to keep faith in the UK hotels sector co-founder of new group AGO Hotels looks to the future Despite the extreme pressure in the market currently, the co-founder of new hotels group AGO Hotels is optimistic about a bounce-back in the UK.
L Hotelier & Hospitality Design
ionel Benjamin, an experienced hotel business leader who has worked across the luxury and economy sectors, believes that the latent demand for travel and staycations will translate into a rapid bounce back in occupancy levels.
22
“There are many reasons to keep faith in the hotel industry, and especially the economy sector, even in the midst of the pandemic”, he says. “The pent-up demand for travel, ‘staycations’ and holidays is clear, not least in the international market. Dubai saw a remarkable occupancy boom when its hotels re-opened. A similar bounce back in the UK looks likely, especially pending the widespread distribution of vaccines, and the economy sector is best positioned for recovery”.
Benjamin founded AGO Hotels alongside entrepreneurial investor Viv Watts in July last year, to provide an innovative and sustainable platform for hotel asset owners. AGO’s distinctive hybrid lease structure includes downside protection to guarantee resilience in challenging market conditions, as well as upside participation to ensure profitability. AGO’s appeal to hotel owners includes 25year FRI lease terms and long-term, low-risk and inflation-hedged cash flows.
Even in the current climate, AGO has successfully exchanged contracts to launch 9 new economy hotels in 2021, with industry giant Accor as a brand partner and is in advanced discussions with a number of other UK sites. For Benjamin, the performance of AGO’s hotels in between national lockdowns gives further grounds for optimism. “Even after the first UK lockdown lifted in July, high occupancy levels within our hotels returned very rapidly, demonstrating the resilience and flexibility which are core strengths of the budget sector. Investment appetite is also showing early signs of recovery, particularly among experienced investors who recognise the opportunities in the current market, understand the cyclical nature of the hotel business and look at the current climate as temporary.”
New flexible antimicrobial surface covering from Alanod protects hospitality businesses against coronaviruses and bacteria
The benefits of copper in combatting the coronavirus are well-known: a study by The New England Journal of Medicine showed that SARS-CoV-2 was able to retain surface stability on stainless steel and plastics for up to 72 hours but after just four hours no viable virus was found on copper. Research carried out by independent laboratory Eurovir® has proved that MIRO® CU is highly effective against coronaviruses. In tests, MIRO® CU reduced the presence of the virus by 99.97%. MIRO® CU is a thin, flexible film backed with a pressure sensitive adhesive that is easy to cut and stick onto existing surfaces, enabling hospitality businesses to protect areas such as counter tops, tables and food service areas. “Our unique MIRO® CU surface covering allows hospitality businesses to offer a significantly enhanced level of safety to customers and employees. It’s scientifically proven to
prevent the spread of coronaviruses, especially on surfaces that many people touch throughout the day, such as bar counters, hotel receptions and POS,” explained Stuart Tranter, General Manager, Alanod UK. MIRO® CU can be manufactured, serviced or retrofitted to hospitality surfaces that are frequent contact areas for multiple customers, such as hotel gym and sports lockers and luggage storage, where goods are stored and accessed by many different people throughout the day. It can also be used as a removable sticker for light switches and push buttons, for example on hotel elevators. Copper changes its appearance with age and as a result of contact with other substances, and so, over time, MIRO® CU develops a tarnish. This is a natural evolution of real copper oxides and the surface remains active against virus bacteria and other microbes. Samples of MIRO® CU are available on request to Alanod. With over 40 years of experience in the research, design, development and manufacture of specialised metal materials, Alanod offers unrivalled application advice and expertise to the hospitality industry and beyond. www.alanod.co.uk

Regency Design launches external WeatherGuard to protect customers obliged to queue
The need for retailers, hospitality venues and other customerfacing establishments to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines, and enforce social distancing, has led to a challenge that many are familiar with: how to protect customers who are obliged to stand outside in a queue from being subjected to the elements such as wind and the rain.
While in the summer months this has not been such an issue, the onset of autumn is causing retailers and customers alike to rethink their strategies. Regency Design believes it has come up with the answer, with a low-cost modular tunnel that can be built as long or short as required and either bolted or weighted to the ground or on casters for ultimate portability. Zak Manhire, Chief Commercial Officer at Regency Design, says that the British-built product has been specifically designed with customer service in mind: “The weather tunnels will help to protect customers who are queuing outside and encourage them to continue shopping, eating or generally going about their business on rainy days,” he says. “Retailers, pubs and restaurants, banks and building societies, post offices and GP surgeries or indeed any environment where a customer is obliged to wait outside can benefit from our system which delivers a new definition of customer care and comes with bespoke branding.” The External Q WeatherGuard System comes with 1.5 mm
Zintec construction and 5mm PetG interchangeable inserts with predrilled holes or plates that bolt into the floor for safety and stability. The guards are 1.5m long x 1m wide x 2.1m high with gradients for run off. With optional lockable casters and a fully brandable side panel, the WeatherGuards are safe and secure and can be branded and customised to fit any customer-facing establishment. The WeatherGuard system is lightweight yet robust, they can be wheeled in/out of a venue outside of working hours to prevent them from being damaged or vandalised. Additionally, a pitched roof design prevents a build-up of surface water and associated dirt.

The Hilton Frankfurt City Centre, finalist at the Sbid International Design Awards 2020 and shortlisted for the International Hotel and Property Awards, stands among the latest projects signed by THDP. The uniqueness of the project lies in the observation of the environment and cultural background of the place, thus joining and reflecting the enchanting eclecticism and modernity of Frankfurt city.
Centre’s international guests and their understanding of what luxury means. The modern design of the rooms is therefore tailored to the modern contemporary traveller, with a selection of neutral colours and warm timber panelling and flooring, thus imbuing a familiar feeling blended with smart and business touches. The rooms are also equipped with high-tech solutions, modern light fittings and carefully selected artworks that aim at giving a glimpse into the local culture.
The inspiration provided by Frankfurt city and its position as a global financial hub is combined with a particular focus on the consumers’ priorities and expectations in terms of latest technologies. Indeed, the ‘smart modern approach’ chosen by Nicholas Hickson and Manuela Mannino – co-owners and creative directors of THPD – takes into account the Hilton Frankfurt City
The Hilton Frankfurt City Centre’s modern structure also provides his guests with an exclusive space of healing and recovery: the new Hudson Yards Bar. The adaptable framework of the Hudson Yards Bar consists of a back bar having swing doors closing a ‘day’ focus section for coffee, afternoon teas and cakes, and a ‘night’ time set up of cocktails and spirits. Designed as a place of
refreshment for business travellers, the bar features a New York style, with brass gantry shelving, custom counter lights, brass foot stops, strong colours and natural leather details. Finally, the design project developed by THDP includes the refurbishment and modernization of the check-in area, in the sign of a style continuity with the new guests rooms and suites. The new check-in area is provided with individual checkin pods, thus ensuring the easy flow of people inside the building and maximising the comfort of the guests. The bespoke design purposely resemble a concierge desk at a New York residential high rise, with rounded shaped check-in pods incorporating natural Rosso Levanto marble, copper mesh and walnut veneer, so as to elevate the Hilton Frankfurt City Centre to the level of a modern luxury space.
