Industry News Wetherspoon plans new £10m Glasgow hotel

London tops hotel expense list

Pub company JD Wetherspoon has revealed plans to build a 73-bedroom hotel next to its Crystal Palace pub in Glasgow. The £10m development, which is subject to planning permission, will include the addition of 28 bedrooms above the pub and an extension to the property that will include a further 45 bedrooms. Wetherspoon, which said the development would create 30 jobs, has process of progressing its application. A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said: “We are keen to open a new hotel alongside and above our pub, The Crystal Palace, in Glasgow. We believe that the hotel would be a great asset to the city and to the pub itself.” Wetherspoon currently operates 36 hotels in the UK, including seven across Scotland.

Latest business intelligence from hotel solutions provider HRS has revealed some interesting trends when it comes to hotel stays in the UK and Europe in 2015. The data not only provides the latest night for Q1 2015 across the UK and Europe, but also lifts the lid on other developments such as total cost per stay and which cities hotels in Europe. By analysing the latest bookings made via HRS over the last year, HRS’ data showed that business travellers typically spend an average of £87 per room per night in the UK, versus just £65 per night in Europe. Delving deeper and looking at average room rates for 1-5* hotels in the UK in Q1 2015, London continues to remain the most expensive destination at £116 per night – an increase of 15.6% compared with Q1 2014. Meanwhile in Europe (excluding London), Zurich tops the tables with average room rates reaching £110 – again, an increase of 14.9% against the same period last year.

With the Euro looking particularly attractive compared to the British Pound at present, could travel buyers and event organisers be tempted to think that they can save money by booking abroad instead of in the UK? HRS’ latest data is certainly pointing to the Continent as a region offering far more competitively priced accommodation than the UK due to the weak Euro. In fact, when it came to the total cost of a stay, HRS’ data showed that including the cost of the hotel room people on average spend £129 in Europe compared with £202 in the UK – a difference of £73. This means that if you take the average cost of a hotel room in the UK at £87, an individual is likely to rack up £115 of additional hotel expenses to the cost of their room in the UK, compared to a far more modest £64 extra for Europe where typically just £65 is spent on a hotel room each night. This doesn’t transport. Further looking at the total cost of stay, HRS’ data also revealed that the most important meal of the day, breakfast, typically cost £11 per person if paid for separately. However over a third of hotel bookings made with HRS (36%) included breakfast, meaning that more businesses could be making having to pay extra for breakfast on departure.

Heatwave boosts interest in UK seaside hotels

Trivago analysed hotel searches made between Monday 29 June and Wednesday 1 July and found that, compared to the same period the previous week, there was a sharp increase in the number of people looking to stay in the UK’s seaside resorts with Bournemouth, Blackpool and Brighton the most popular.

Only Plymouth (down 10 per cent) and Portsmouth (down 7 per cent) saw decreases during a period which included the hottest July day on record.

Southend-on-Sea also experienced the greatest increase in travel interest, with hotel searches increasing by 64 per cent over a one week period. This was followed by Skegness (45 per cent), Weston-super-Mare (42 per cent), Bournemouth (35 per cent) and Tenby (30 per cent).

The South and South West are the most expensive coastal destinations with an overnight stay in St Ives in Cornwall costing an average of £160. Poole in Dorset (£140), Portsmouth

(£116) were also seen as some of the most expensive destinations.

The cheapest prices can be found in Blackpool (average of £60 per night during July 2015), followed by Skegness (£62), Scarborough (£79), Weston-super-Mare and Southend-onSea (both £82). Denise Bartlett of Trivago said: “The early heatwave seems to have prompted optimism for a hot UK summer, with holidaymakers opting for a ‘staycation’ and searching for popular seaside resorts within the UK. From starting from just £60 a night, it is great to see holidaymakers making the most of the range of affordable staycation destinations.”

Room to Reward is calling on hotels to donate vacant bedrooms to “deserving individuals”, with a complimentary stay, on a bedand-breakfast basis. The scheme hopes to reward those who offer their time for charities – both on a volunteer and low salary bracket basis – who could not ordinarily afford to stay at a hotel. The opening of Hilton’s hotel and spa mar In of Hampshire Cricket’s the Ageas Bowl. cr For over a hundred years, Southampton city centre boasted its own county cricket ground, the home of Hampshire. However, by the 1990s the historic ground was ageing and becoming increasingly hemmed in by the growth of the city around it. In a decisive break with the past, Hampshire Cricket Ltd made a bold move to relocate the cricket ground and construct a brand new stadium. The first games were played at the new venue in 2001 and international cricket arrived in 2006. But the company was not content to leave it at that.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Hampshire Cricket board set an ambitious goal: to become the first test ground to achieve the England and Wales Cricket Board’s standard for model test ground status. The criteria for this are exacting, with minimum requirements set for playing facilities, spectator seating, accommodation, hospitality, press and media facilities, public transport, parking and ancillary services. So when the Hampshire Cricket board appointed hotel experts EPR Architects to masterplan the redevelopment of Southampton’s the Ageas (then Rose) Bowl, EPR knew the project demanded a truly exceptional scheme. Nick Rayner, Associate Director and project architect, explained, “The redevelopment marked a unique opportunity to create a world-class sporting venue to a holistic design that would set it apart from traditional grounds with their eclectic mix of stands and facilities added on through the decades.”

10

EPR led a team of specialist designers to meet this challenging brief within a comprehensive masterplan. Their solution is truly innovative. Ensuring excellence in both accommodation and press and media facilities, EPR has designed a hotel that wraps around the stadium bowl. The pitch-facing bedrooms are constructed in such a way that they convert to hospitality and spectator use on major match days, and the second-floor central function room becomes a world-class media centre for press and broadcasting. The building can therefore operate as a hotel for the vast majority of the year, but the requisite facilities are available on match days and other sporting occasions. This highly flexible dual-purpose use makes the Ageas Bowl fundamentally unique in terms of both its hotel and stadium design. Such a revolutionary approach led to EPR being shortlisted for Leisure Architect of the Year.

rks the final stage in the redevelopment

nnovative hotel design sets new standards for international ricket grounds. Having conceived a pioneering functional solution, EPR were mindful to retain a holistic approach to the entire site to preserve its existing natural landscaping. The hotel and stands have therefore been positioned to continue seamlessly round the stadium to form a low-level simple roofline, in contrast to the existing iconic pavilion building with its tensile roof and masts. The external timber louvre screen facades give a softly curving organic shape to the bowl and provide continuity across the various building uses in hospitality, spectator seating and hotel. Cricketing aficionados will appreciate the references to the axis of the bowler’s arm in this positioning, with a form that reflects the footprint of the stands and pavilion, rather like two opposing teams. The choice of materials was inspired by the site’s locality and heritage, with the hotel drawing on the existing palette of steel and timber materials already in use. The effect of the building’s external appearance, together with carefully integrated landscaping, enhances the site’s natural parkland setting. A measure of the success of the design came in 2014 when Test Match Special’s Jonathan Agnew tweeted a picture of the view from the Northern End, captioned: “one of the prettiest grounds, now.” The project has been brought about in no small part through an innovative collaboration between Hampshire Cricket and its local authority, Eastleigh Borough Council which is also a designated Beacon Council for sustainability. As such, the client and design team were conscious throughout the process to ensure that the project met the Council’s aspirations for sustainable design, being one of the high-profile sites within the borough. The project adopted the BREEAM approach for assessment of sustainable criteria and this was rigorously applied across the whole site. Integral to the sustainable design is the extended 18-hole golf course. Not only does this retain the connection with the ground’s parkland setting, but its lakes and water features – as well as adding visual and playing interest to golfers – form part of the site’s water management strategy. This is achieved through attenuating rainwater run-off from the buildings in the catchment area which is then collected for irrigation. Together with the hotel’s landscaping, the golf course design carefully conserves and enhances the habitat for the site’s important flora and fauna and ecological diversity. As with all major sporting venues, transporting large numbers of spectators on and off the site efficiently, and providing for their catering and welfare needs during their stay – as well as ensuring they have an uninterrupted view of the playing field – is a complex requirement. Developing the infrastructure through the construction of additional roads was therefore the first phase of the project. Phase two came with the construction of the stands in the summer of 2010. The final part of the masterplan was the opening of the Hilton hotel and spa in May 2015. Providing 171 guestrooms, executive lounge, luxury spa facilities, signature chef restaurant (the choice of Ian Botham’s Beefy’s has a certain resonance for the venue), 700-seat conference and banqueting facilities, it boasts spectacular views overlooking the famous cricket ground. Nick Rayner says, “Our design for the hotel and spa is the final piece. It completes the holistic and cohesive design of the cricket ground, and brings a luxury hotel with high-quality business, leisure and hospitality facilities to this world-class sporting destination.” EPR’s masterplan was instrumental in securing Test Match Cricket for the first time at the ground in 2011. Sporting fixtures continue with two one-day internationals in 2015. Hampshire Chairman, Rod Bransgrove says: “The staging of these two matches is fantastic news for everyone involved with Hampshire Cricket and the Ageas Bowl. The games will be the first internationals at the ground with the complete Hilton Hotel so I’m sure they will both be fantastic occasions.”

Falconer Chester Hall’s interior design combines organic forms and patterns reminiscent of the New Forest with the rich hued timbers and leathers of the site’s sporting past, finally adding a dash of the panache and excitement of 1920s aviation. The lounge and restaurant have a classic look; parquet flooring and wooden panelling give a deep warm feel to the space. Leathers and heavy drapes, mixed with metal work redolent of vintage luggage, have influenced the detailing to the bar and fixed furniture. A sumptuous colour palette and opulent lighting define intimate spaces whilst leather bar stools, table lighting, dark woodwork and accents of stainless steel and glass add a touch of glamour. In the Executive Lounge, an area for Hilton Honours and executive guests, the use of leathers and bold colours is continued but lightened and freshened with soft greys and warm whites. Mark Doohan, Director of Falconer Chester Hall Architects, interior designers for the hotel, said of the restaurant and executive lounge: “Our design brings together reflections of the site’s sporting heritage, its historic connections and the beautiful countryside that surrounds the city, creating a luxurious and inviting space to welcome guests to the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

True to the company’s bold ambitions, Hampshire Cricket now has a state-of-the-art cricket ground in a completed stadium with a great match-day atmosphere, and a spectacular hotel at the heart of the year-round business and leisure destination.

Independent Hotel Show 2015 announces Jestico + Whiles winner of The Hub design competition The Independent Hotel Show is dedicated to championing the freshest talent in the hotel design industry and this year is no exception. The annual Hub design competition, supported by Bridge for Design, offers the leading lights in the sector a chance to showcase their vision and expertise in the creation and design of The Hub, a key feature area of the show. The Hub is an innovative and inspiring central networking area of the Independent Hotel Show, the only trade show in the UK dedicated to the needs and aspirations of the independent hotelier. The Hub design competition invited specialists to create a space that visually pushed the boundaries of interior design, sparked debate and offered an inspiring yet functional place to conduct business.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The winning design for 2015 was submitted by Daniel Bryan-Harris and Amal Yusuf, of architecture and interior design practice Jestico + Whiles’ award-winning hotel design team, which has a global reputation for designing some of the world's most prestigious hotels including W Hotel London, Andels Lodz in Poland, the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi and the recently completed Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza.

22

The winning entry was decided by an esteemed panel of judges including Vanessa Brady OBE, Founder of the Society of British and International Design, John Legg, Editorial Director of Gearing Media Group, Mike Stiff, a qualified architect and Founder of Stiff + Trevillion, Andrew Linwood, Head of Design at Areen Hospitality and Daniel Hopwood, Owner of Studio Hopwood Ltd and President of the British Institute for Interior Design. Commenting on the Jestico + Whiles entry, Andrew Linwood says: “Jestico + Whiles had the most interesting and well-presented design. It starts with a strong narrative concept – the whimsical relationship between the British and their

weather – which is clearly extrapolated throughout the various major design elements: umbrellas, rain projections etc.” Vanessa Brady OBE adds: “Jestico + Whiles really seem to have grasped the thought process with inspiration, functionality and compliance, then adding specialities and finally raw talent” Commenting on their vision for The Hub, James Dilley, Head of Interior Design and Hospitality at Jestico + Whiles says: ‘‘Jestico + Whiles has chosen to focus on sense of place through the English obsession with the weather. Mundane as this may seem, when taken into a new setting, it can become a celebration of Englishness. A glowing rainbow will signpost the Hub and the rainfall on a window will enforce the Hub’s role as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the show. Suspended umbrellas, once the very signature of Englishness, create an abstract chandelier.’’ Visitors to the show can see Jestico + Whiles vision for The Hub brought to life during the two-day event. Held at Olympia West on 20 and 21 October, The Independent Hotel Show and The Hub offer a wealth of ideas and inspiration for the forward thinking independent hotel owner. Sleep 2015: Europe’s truly experiential hotel design & development event

Following its successful Sleep debut last year, Snoozebox, the unique and adaptable portable hotel, will be returning, this time with a competition entitled Flexibility in which designers will be invited to create a concept for a poptechnology. The winning entry will be installed in a Snoozebox, with materials supplied by Egger, and will be displayed outside the venue.

In the Design Gallery, designers will explore the increasing ‘blurring of lines’ between different physical spaces and between the physical and the experiential. Specially designed spaces created by industry names will suggest ways in which the hotel space and the workplace as well as hotel and residential spaces could converge in the future as the way people wish to lead their lives continues to evolve. This topic will also be picked up in a Sleep Conference session, and will consider the emotional and practical issues and challenge assumptions about how hotels should be designed.

The Digital Hub is also to make a return appearance to captivate visitors with some of the latest hi-tech applications for the hotel design sector.

‘Stop whinging’ about the National Living Wage

Oakman Inns and Restaurants chief executive Peter Borg-Neal has urged those in the hospitality industry who have come out against the National Living Wage announced in Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget yesterday to “stop whinging”.

at the announcement of the move, on which it had not been consulted, warning that the planned changes could involve job losses.

we have tried to have a constructive dialogue with HM Treasury on building towards the living wage without job losses,” she said.

Though the Chancellor said it would only have a “fractional impact” on jobs,

for a “constructive dialogue” on the issue, and suggested that hospitality could see a number of job losses as a result of the number of relatively lowpaid workers in the sector.

Due to the historical ambience of the site, even when it came to replacing the now failing security systems, the owners required a solution that would not affect the style of the doors or affect the overall aesthetics of the architecture.

SMARTair™’s all-in-one access control solution reduces the cost and inconvenience associated with wiring a traditional access control system. No software or programming is involved, so user cards and fobs can be easily added or removed as required.

Local Mul-T-Lock dealer, PSW Locksmiths recommended SMARTair™, a state of the art access control solution to replace the mechanical systems. Nemef mortice locks, also supplied by Mul-T-Lock, were used in conjunction with the SMARTair™ units.

MUL-T-LOCK’S MT5

INSTALLED IN £15M ART GALLERY REFURB

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 security solution has been installed at Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, as part of a £15 million expansion and refurbishment programme.

36

The gallery, which reopened earlier this year after 16 months of remodeling works, has doubled in size. The extension at the rear of the building, which stretches out into Whitworth Park, incorporates a glass promenade and has extended the gallery’s recognised symmetrical structure. Due to the overall expansion and a number of glass-winged extensions, the gallery required an effective security solution to accommodate the new building. Whitworth Art Gallery contacted local Mul-T-Lock dealer, Access Lock & Safe, who recommended a Mul-T-Lock MT5 Master key System and G-Series padlocks. Andy Dixon from Access Lock & Safe, comments: “We were involved with Whitworth Art Gallery from the inception of the refurbishment project. I had no doubt in my mind that Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 and G-Series padlocks were the best choice for such a huge project; a natural progression from the previous Mul-T-Lock Integrator platform already installed. “Over a four month period, as each construction phase concluded, we installed the MT5 range across internal and external doors and incorporated training days to show the team at the gallery how the system worked. In total, Access Lock & Safe installed 90 cylinders and 12 G-Series padlocks.” Mul-T-Lock’s MT5 solution is a multipatented mechanical platform that combines intelligent access control with snap-resistant cylinders. Through advanced key control, via key card or master keying options, each door can be assembled to operate by one unique key, or to several keys, depending on the environment. With the same keying system, the G-Series padlocks contain high corrosion and attack resistant cylinders, in order to ensure maximum security.

Andy continues: “The MT5 range is designed to be building, it was important that the gallery had the ability to limit and extend security access at the drop of a hat. “Overall, I’m delighted that we worked on such a recognised project in Manchester, and would like to congratulate Whitworth Art Gallery on its recent awards after reopening.” Since the relaunch, the Royal Institute of British Architects has recognised and named the gallery, the North West Building of the year. Whitworth Art Gallery has also been shortlisted for the Art Fund’s Museum of the Year award. Dean Whiteside at Whitworth Art Gallery, comments: “Having used both Mul-T-lock and Access Lock and Safe before, we products and the level of service we would receive. “The MT5 system delivers on all fronts, giving us a quality product, high levels of security and more the building and its many users. “With the support of Access Lock

and Safe and Mul-T-lock, the entire process, from design through to delivery, seamlessly integrated into our project and operations. will continue to deliver, and grow and change as our needs do.”

The Roaring 20’s Back To Life Situated in Fulham and inspired by the decadence of deco, The Lucky Pig has emerged from its underground Fitzrovian lair to offer the insatiable pleasure-seekers of south west London a brand new joint in which to relax, dine and imbibe breakfast through to dinner, set music the city has to offer. With your gangster or moll, feel like Nucky Thompson in the swish speakeasy, harking back to prohibition. Every part of the design has been painstakingly worked on to recreate the look and feel of the 1920’s. The Lucky Pig lends its origin to the 1920s Prohibition Era: “Lucky” based on the notorious American mobster “Lucky Luciano,” and “Pig” a nod towards the Blind Pig watering holes where people gathered during the ban for evenings of debauchery and illicit drinking. It’s not just the design that’s a star here. The dishes served are from the textbook of swanky, with Rillettes of Loch Duart Salmon, Pressed Minted Cucumber & Toasted Bread or Pan Fried Black Bream with Aromatic Sweet Potatoes, accompanied by Preserved Lemon & Spinach Salsa, a real though process has gone into the look as well as the produce of each offering. taste and eye opening indulgence. Options include Noodle juice; Tea infused Tanqueray Gin, White Vermouth & Citrus, Hanky Panky; Ada “Coley” Coleman's Savoy favourite, Tanqueray Gin, Sweet Vermouth with a Herbal highlight and the Lavender Bee’s Knees; It’s the bees' knees, elephants' eyebrows & gnats' whistle all rolled into one! Tanqueray Gin, Honey, Lemon & a hint of Lavender All of the above is rounded off with smooth piano jazz and a voice from the past, giving the feel of being back in the days of Lucky Luciano.

Unlike an aerosol based product, the Airscent Atom has no propellants which are released into the air, just pure fragrance oils blended with Odouraze odour neutraliser which help to combat malodours, destroying bad smells and eliminating odours in washrooms and workspaces. According to research by PHS, 83% of workers believe that an unpleasant smelling washroom negatively impacts on staff in the workplace. In order to boost workplace moral and create a pleasant working environment, PHS Washrooms has worked with fragrance experts to develop a range of scents from ‘Punchy Orange’ to ‘Floral Breeze’, which are certain to satisfy the senses.

Gary Seaton, Sales Director of PHS Washrooms, comments: “From our research, we know that having a pleasant smelling workplace is important to employees, impacting on productivity and wellbeing. We are therefore delighted to unveil our latest fragrance innovation, having worked hard with our product development team to create a product centred on the cutting edge Piezo technology. “Not only is the Airscent features making it suitable for virtually any space, it is made with the highest quality materials and looks good too.” For more information about the Airscent Atom, which is now available exclusively from PHS Washrooms, visit www.phs.co.uk/atom

THE PIERHOUSE HOTEL TAKES HOTEL MANAGEMENT TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ROOMMASTER PMS

Nestled on the shores of a Scottish sea lock, Loch Linnhe, in the picturesque village of Port Appin, Argyll, The Pierhouse Hotel originally started life as the 19th century residence of the Pier Master. The Pierhouse Hotel is now a luxury hotel with 12 en suite bedrooms, a specialist seafood a la carte restaurant for 60 guests, a bar with over 100 malts and a wood burning stove, spa facilities and a host of outdoor activities for guests. The owners looked to upgrade the cumbersome manual hotel systems in place with an affordable integrated hotel management system, to increase hotel guests and visitors. NFS’s roomMaster hotel system was seamlessly installed to deliver an effective technology solution with full reporting operations and continuous twoway integration with SiteMinder, to enable room availability and pricing to be automatically distributed to online booking channels.
