We found Powerstar to be proactive in their approach and awareness of the installation requirements during busy business operational hours.” Working closely with Whitbread’s energy managers, Powerstar’s engineers developed a thorough understanding savings aims and objectives. They worked to ensure that energy surveys and installations caused minimum disruption to Whitbread’s guests and day-to-day business operations. to measure the carbon output from heating, air conditioning and other energy usage. Industry News Hotel industry fumes as UK prepares to legalize Airbnb in London Airbnb users have many options when they visit London, but they and their hosts are probably unaware that these short-term lets are often illegal. However, that’s about to change – much to the ire of the hotel industry. On Monday, housing minister Brandon Lewis set out plans for short-term lets to be deregulated in London. A 42-yearold London law says that anyone wanting to rent out their home for less than 90 days must get planning permission to do so, or pay a £20,000 ($30,450) penalty per offence. The government now wants that law scrapped. “We live in the 21st century, and London homeowners should be able to rent out their home for a short period without having to pay for a council permit. These laws … need to be updated for the internet age,” Lewis said in a statement. However, the government would still restrict short-term letting to 90 days per calendar year or less, so that the properties don’t effectively become hotels. The properties also can’t be business premises, and councils will be able to apply for “small localized exemptions from the new

The British Hospitality Association has been lobbying against these changes for quite some time and says it still has serious concerns about health and safety. In an emailed statement, Association policy director Jackie Grech said the relevant clause had been “hastily pushed through … without any concern for the consequences such as security, employment, housing shortages, anti-social behavior and the high quality reputation of tourism in the U.K.” She added: serious injuries. It is possible to look out for the interests of community, customers and employees; the hospitality industry does this every day. These multi-billion dollar companies need to do the same and we are particularly concerned for small, family run establishments who have to compete with giant multi billion pound companies. This all comes a few months after the publication of a U.K. government review of the so-called sharing economy, conducted by Debbie Wosskow, the CEO of home exchange platform Love Home Swap. Astonishingly, the review suggested that accommodation-sharing platforms should be less burdened with regulation.

DUKES ST JAMES LONDON Launches G & Tea

The classic G&T is reimagined with an Afternoon Tea Twist at luxury boutique hotel in Mayfair Recognising the trend for tea infused alcohol, vintage-inspired drinking parties, and the consistent demand for afternoon tea, DUKES ST JAMES LONDON has launched “G & Tea” a brand new afternoon tea experience combining two of the most recognised British tradi-tions: the Afternoon Tea and the Gin and Tonic. Centering itself on a brand new gin crea-tion of Beefeater gin that has been masterfully infused with dried black tea leaves, DUKES is inviting guests to enjoy G & Tea from the comfort and luxury of this quintessentially Brit-ish hotel. The brainchild of DUKES’ Food & Beverage Manager, Robert de Vivo, this quirky after-noon tea experience can be enjoyed by guests in the hotel’s elegant Drawing Room or Con-servatory area, overlooking the hotel’s tranquil courtyard garden. Served in a delicate china teacup evocative of the Prohibition era, a staple prop adopted by London’s popular vintage parties, the tea infused gin can be savoured cold with ice and tonic during the warmer months, or as a hot punch in the winter. Accompanied by a range of delicious afternoon tea treats, the “G & Tea” concept offers a completely new take on this traditional afternoon din-ing experience. “G & Tea” begins by guests selecting their preferred infusion, using either a velvety Black Vanilla tea or traditional Earl Grey. Once chosen, a dedicated DUKES waiter will serve guests their preferred tipple from elegant vintage decanters, pouring the tea-gin infusion over an abundance of refreshing ice, lime and lemon into a traditional china teacup. Guests will then be offered a homemade sweetened tonic syrup to top up the drink to their heart’s content. Accompanying afternoon salmon, ham and tomato, cream cheese and cucumber and corona-tion chicken scones. Experts in all things gin, DUKES recognises that gin’s inherent botanical properties century.

Safe Wooden Floors In the last ten years, we have seen an increase in work to ensure the safety of flooring, especially in terms of slip reduction. In the last twenty years, the popularity of wooden flooring products has soared. The hard and smooth surface lends itself to high-traffic areas and it is the flooring material of choice for everything from high profile, public buildings to high design commercial installations such as galleries, hotels, bars and restaurants. Making sure the intended flooring surface is safe is one of the most important factors for specifiers, especially for public and commercial spaces. Safety flooring is required in areas routinely subjected to spillage and contamination. For example, in areas where food is being served and handled, possibly not wiped up straight away, there would be a need for a slip resistant surface. On the other hand, in a main dining area, where people are seated and spillage is much more likely to be removed immediately, a normal floor finish would be fine. To a large extent, working practices will guide which surface finish is needed.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

When specifying flooring with safety in mind, there is now a way to make solid hardwood floors slip resistant, even in wet areas. For some time, the flooring industry was not able to give true wet slip protection to wooden flooring in a way that was easy to apply.

26

Junckers started to investigate the introduction of a new, easy to apply product that would meet demand as far back as 2005. The company envisaged the requirement for a simple to use and effective product reducing the possibilities of slips from wet spillage on any type of wooden floor. Two years later, a new lacquer was introduced that could easily be applied over existing and newly-laid wooden floors whether pre-finished, untreated or machine sanded. The product was tested to BS7976-2 standard to meet the guidelines and the result was Junckers High Performance Friction Plus. This low-odour, very hard-wearing water based 100% pure polyurethane lacquer provides the high levels of slip resistance needed for a safe floor where spillages are probable. It gives the floor a fine, textured surface, which meets the surface roughness requirements needed for

reducing slippage in wet conditions, yet, is still easy to clean. We are confident it is an effective, fast solution for environments such as bars, restaurants and pubs. This is why Junckers now has a policy to recommend to all clients, specifiers, flooring and building contractors that all flooring installed in commercial areas where spillages may occur and cannot be managed, should consider that an extra siteapplied coat of this seal to ensure customers’ floors meet the required regulations. Junckers Friction Plus lacquer has proved one of our most successful seals and members of our Approved Contractors network and flooring contractors all over the UK have quickly realised its efficiency and ease of use to be able to offer their clients a safe floor, where needed. Recent projects include a bar and assembly hall in Hackney Town Hall, London, the main ticket office at Aberdeen train station, the restaurant and social area at Yell.com’s new head office facilities in Reading as well as several hundred square metres at Gatwick Airport. An important point to keep in mind is not all floors need to be treated as safety floors. The individual environment and how spillage and contamination is managed should always be taken into consideration. Some floors may score well without the need for an extra coating – for example, our standard, factory applied UltraMatt lacquer achieves a low potential for slip, both in its wet and dry states, without the need for High Performance Friction Plus. If a business can manage spillages, there may be no need for a slip resistant seal – one spillage left all day may be more dangerous than ten spillages all removed straight away. Good, old fashioned common sense goes a long way, in my humble opinion and using the knowledge and expertise of an experienced flooring contractor will mean our floors will remain safe. 10 Years Dealing With Something No-One Wants to Talk About Despite their high recognition factor in the public’s mind (sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite) they are unsurprisingly a pest that no-one wants to discuss let alone admit to have any practical knowledge about. Well in March 2015 it will be the 10th year anniversary of www. Bed-Bugs.co.uk the domain behind dedicated bedbug specialists. Yes it may initially appear odd to have but founder and managing director David Cain had something of a understanding that the problem was going to get a lot worse before we would start to see improvements, sure enough there has been a global resurgence in the problem and the UK is very much on the frontlines in terms of tackling the issues as well as developing sustainable solutions.

biologist and later working as a city analyst David has watched the issue grow from something thought to be extinct to something which can ruin an organizations reputation in one night and tarnish an online reputation for years to come. Our business model is actually quite simple explains David. We picked a niche area and decided to go

Hotelier & Hotel Design

peoples understanding knowing that by being focused we would stay far enough ahead of the sectors we serve that there would always be a need for us. On day one I would have never imagined that I would consult with architects on the

46

regards bedbugs but our research indicated it was common place in the 1920’s. My work has even taken me to South America where on one trip I not only visited and dealt with active cases but also held an educational seminar to illustrate to people how to go about dealing with infestations.

While most of our work comes from dealing with domestic based infestations we have developed a with a more systematic approach quite literally helping hotels and before guests would be aware of them. The clear advantage of this ProActive approach is that it safe guards the reputational damage that are associated with bedbugs. Such methods are also 100% green and sustainable; another when they decided to stop using any forms of synthetic insecticides having developed more effective time we need to address the long term issues such as: How will you detect the next introduction of bedbugs before it gets out of control How to best manage an incident should one occur How to repair the damage to the organizations reputation and staff morale following a protracted battle with bedbugs However, as we are seeing more and more hotels suffering from outbreaks of bedbugs and as they continue to become resistant to many of the synthetic insecticides we are also starting to see more communication on the subject. It’s still common to be asked how to “stop this from happening again” but we can all at least agree that closing the doors is not an option for a viable hotel business.

I would actively encourage all hoteliers to consider bedbugs in detection. You hardly wait till you have burnt down half your hotel to install one and guests are increasingly expected a bite free night. In a recently US presentation consumers said that being bedbug free was worth $150 per night to them on a planned trip and with review sites offering easy access to information on your reputation it’s easy to tell who has not managed an incident well enough to avoid bad publicity. For those who don’t think bedbugs will affect them we even have a special website called www. OstrichBugs.com which explains why that defense is somewhat outcome you desire. Best practice is to ensure that you have procedures, protocols and processes in place to deal with an issue should it occur and to work with your housekeeping staff to make sure they are ahead of the issue and don’t wait till things get out of control. The cost of doing so can be less than 5p per bed per night, much less than a sachet of coffee and let’s face it it’s rare to get a scathing review online because of coffee quality whereas bedbugs is a reputation best and easily avoided. I would encourage anyone wish to read more to look at the following websites: www.Bed-Bugs.co.uk/hotels.html www.BedBugFoundation.org

Our ranges are as varied as hotels are different However, it is worth considering what could make any hotel stand out, and what could provide a marketing advantage. For instance, you could be the only hotel in the area offering Organic Towels. Organic products are on the increase and some of the statistics from a recent study are eye-opening. Organic beauty and health products grew by 17% in 2013 alone and 4 out of every 5 homes now buys organic produce.

Towels need not be white and need not be made in the same way. Look at the King of Cotton Zero Twist range. These towels are made from pure cotton which has been spun in such a way that the fibres remain straighter. This process adds strength to the product yet makes the material incredibly light and easier to wash and dry. Zero Twist is available in white and in some very sophisticated colours in towels and robes.

Robes is one area where you really can be different. King of Cotton has seen a dramatic increase in the uptake of more unusual robes by hotel owners which is why they now offer no less than nine different ranges. Some offer ‘stand-out’ by virtue of their heritage, such as the ‘The Ritz Carlton’, a beautifully designed robe, used in one of the world’s grandest venues in 420 GSM soft waffle pure cotton. Other designs that are unique include the Monte Carlo Towelling Robe, as shown, with its contrasting collar and cuffs in three colour ways.

There is an interior design opportunity for hotels in the wide ranges of throws and bedspreads, from contemporary to traditional available from King of Cotton. Have a look at all King of Cotton products on the website and remember to call the company to set up your trade account for offers and discounts. www.kingofcotton.co.uk

Hotelier & Hotel Design

There are about 10,000 reasonable sized hotels in the UK. And whilst hotel chains tend to create similar looking hostelries, in the main every hotel is different. Yet, very often, hotels choose towels and robes that are identical to the next. Nothing wrong with that and indeed the best selling towels at King of Cotton are hotel standard 500 GSM white towels.

Tadelakt Plaster – The Revival of an Ancient Art

T

adelakt is a polished plaster originating from the Mediterranean region of Morocco and means ‘to rub’ or ‘knead’ in Arabic. The application of Tadelakt had a practical purpose in a hot, arid climate and records indicate that nomads used it to seal reservoirs for retaining drinking water. Over time its use was extended to plastering hammams, riads and palaces, and today is used as an alternative to tiling in wet rooms, showers and bathrooms or as a stunning feature wall. The application of Tadelakt, using a wide range of trowels, hand tools and spatulas, allows the plasterer to follow the lines of the substrate closely, hence it can be applied to curved surfaces such as sinks and Once the plaster has been applied, the surface is brushed with olive soap and then burnished with a small, hard stone. Stoning the surface compresses the Tadelakt and this, along with the reaction with the lime and olive soap, makes it water repellent whilst achieving a surface shine at the same time. Although skill and patience is required, with the right guidance and practice it is not outside the realms of DIY.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

Tadelakt has a beautiful, smooth appearance and is exceptionally tactile. Its versatility means that there are very few limitations in terms of the surfaces and shapes it can be applied to.

58

Mike Wye & Associates Ltd supply a traditional form of Tadelakt from German suppliers, Kreidezeit, who investigated original forms of the plaster in Morocco and discovered that it was made from an eminently hydraulic limestone found 1.5 metres below ground in the Marrakech Plateau. This lime was added to sand, marble dust and pigments which has been recreated today to make Kreidezeit Tadelakt. For guidance on Tadelakt material quantities, quotations, training courses and instructional DVD please visit www.mikewye.co.uk or call one of our technical sales team on: 01409 281644.

Karren Fielding’s “Romantic Shimmer” Range

Hotelier & Hotel Design

Glitters and Glows!

60

Years of foreign living and travel have inspired the art of well-known portrait and animal artist, Karren Fielding. Influenced by the rich and romantic atmospheres of Europe and the Middle East, her art encompasses shimmering light and gold attributed to the abundant hues of a Mediterranean sun, sea and sky.

Karren paints in both the UK and internationally. Commissioned portraits are painted working from photographs, with client consultation throughout, shipping included. PoA.

After studying at St Martin’s School of Art, Karren joined the design team at Selfridges before becoming freelance, working for an eclectic mix of clients including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Simpsons of Piccadilly, Waring & Gillow, Liberty’s, and many prestigious London nightclubs and restaurants, designing and producing printed and signwritten posters, signs, menus, and murals including trompe l’oeil.

“I commissioned Karren Fielding to paint a very personal work for my wife from our honeymoon. I sent her a photo that was special to us and she agreed to complete the painting. We worked out the details and logistics, this was an international transaction.

Karren is currently devoted to producing beautiful paintings, including commissioning portraits (of both people and pets), for her “Romantic Shimmer” collection. A unique touch is the inspired idea of beautiful cushions of her paintings….. with the option of “made-to-match” available, a new and exciting range of co-ordinated cushions, blinds, lampshades and wallpaper murals. Karren says of her work “...to paint is my greatest luxury... painting a world of fantasies ....impressionism with unique techniques, giving ethereal and dream-like qualities, using shimmering effects and metallics, creating visions and memories, mystical and romantic....”

Client Testimonial

Karren kept me updated on the process and met all deadlines. The painting came out better than expected and the unexpected shimmer with the detail amazed both of us. The outcome was wonderful and we look forward to having her do other work for us in the near future. As of now the painting hangs in the upper hallway for all to see.” For further information, please contact:Karren Fielding Mob:07980 837489 www.imagenetdesigns.com www.paintingsilove.com/artist/karrenfielding

Renovation of a former Antiques business to a Museum The Ashmolean has carried out in close partnership with Worcestershire County Council, Keil family as well as various regional organisations to convert this historical building in the Cotswold village of Broadway, Worcestershire, into an innovative independent museum: The Ashmolean Museum Broadway. Contractors from Highgate Construction Ltd were approached to conduct the work on the project and on initial inspection noted that the building required fire protection to bring it up to regulation standards of 60 minute fire integrity to BS 479 part 21: 1987 to protect the building in the case of fire. On contact with our key distributor Specialist Fire Solutions who advised and carried out the application of EP/CP intumescent coating system to upgrade the 285 sq metres of lath & plaster which will bring the building up to the above standards. Launched in September 2013, the new Museum is located in ‘Tudor House’ on the main High Street in Broadway. It is truly one of the most cherished and most desired villages in the Cotswolds and Tudor House is among its most significant buildings. Originally constructed in the seventeenth century as a coaching inn, it has been extended as well as modified over the centuries and functioned in a number of periods as part of a school, a farm, in addition to a private residential home for various owners, which includes Benjamin Chandler who renovated the property with the Arts and Crafts architect, CE Mallows, in 1908. For almost 80 years, it had been the headquarters for H.W. Keil Ltd, considered one of the prominent dealers in antique furniture in the world.

The exhibits of fine art from the 17th to the 21st centuries span over three floors, and the collection includes local objects such as Sheldon tapestries, Worcester porcelain, Armorial Ceramics of Broadway families, William Morris tiles and Winchcombe Pottery. One can find paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Millais and Landseer. The top floor comprises of a dedicated gallery for temporary exhibitions, offering local artists as well as community groups with the opportunity to host exhibits, education and outreach programmes.

The items on display are on loan from the Ashmolean Museum. They incorporate paintings and furniture from the founding collections of the Ashmolean, provided by Elias Ashmole to the University of Oxford in 1683.

THE BOATHOUSE PURE IMAGINATION

The Cafe/Bar refurbishment was awarded to GIA with a brief to enhance customer experience and to have greater family appeal.

GIA Architecture and Interior Design of York For more information on this and other projects, please visit www.gia.co.uk www.giaprojects.co.uk

GIA were delighted to use their imagination and creativity. Our design originated from a local Mere which is home for wildlife, natural paradise.

The space is a main artery into other facilities and therefore this had to be creatively integrated into the scheme without destroying the comfort and ambience of this imaginative creation. You can visit many times and you will always see something new.

Hotelier & Hotel Design

Functionality is one of GIA strengths and this, overlaid with pure imagination produced a facility strong on family appeal, with custom designed lighting and seating ingeniously linked back to the inspiration of the Mere.

Based on an original design from the Davey archives, the robust Oceanic pendant lit the way for workers in the dockyards and factories of early twentieth century London. One of the earliest industrial lighting designs on record, the Oceanic was fitted with a sturdy guard to protect from bumps and crashes and a hook mechanism to clip to rails and beams. Originally produced in galvanised steel, the Oceanic has been updated for contemporary interiors in a palette of powder-coated basalt grey, putty grey, white and black with a contrasting galvanised hook, chain and guard. Hand-spun in Birmingham, the Oceanic is available in small (£285) and large sizes (£345).
