Cuillin Hills Hotel Saves 50% with On Premise Laundry For many years the Cuillin Hills Hotel in Portree, Isle of Skye had been outsourcing its laundry, but the island’s remote location, several hours’ drive from the nearest city, meant that rental deliveries were often late or even failed to turn up altogether. At times this left the hotel at risk of running out of fresh linens. The Cuillin Hills Hotel, offers luxury 4 star accommodation with some of the finest and most spectacular views from any hotel in Scotland. It has 29 bespoke bedrooms each individually styled to a very high standard in either traditional or contemporary designs.

Hotelier & Hotel Design - May 2014

The hotel’s management decided to look at the alternative of equipping and running its own laundry. Girbau UK was able to recommend the best choice of machines to meet the hotel’s needs and provided a cost-benefit analysis for the switch to an in-house laundry operation.

4

Girbau’s drawing office also produced a detailed installation layout for the old outbuildings, which were converted to make the new laundry. The company tailored a finance package to suit the hotel’s needs, with no initial capital required. Just as important, bearing in mind the hotel’s location, the financing included a maintenance package guaranteeing a Girbau engineer is available to visit nextday in the event of a breakdown. Girbau UK’s factory-trained engineers installed and commissioned all the equipment and gave hotel staff comprehensive training on its use The hotel expects to make considerable savings as Janet Stoddart, the hotel’s manager confirms: “We were spending upwards of £50,000 per year on our outsourced laundry supplies and we have halved that cost by installing our own laundry and doing it all ourselves.” “All the Girbau machines are easy to use,” says Glenda Greening, housekeeper at the Cuillin Hills Hotel. “The controls are simple and intuitive and the programs give us

to the flexibility handle different fabric types efficiently.” For energy efficient washing, the hotel chose two Girbau 6-Series high spin washers: a HS-6017 LOGI model and a smaller HS-6008 LOGI PRO. For drying it is using a combination of a 75-lb capacity Girbau UK pro Series II tumble dryer and a compact eco-dryer for smaller loads. With significant quantities of high quality linens to finish on a daily basis, the hotel also has one of Girbau’s latest dryer ironers, a PB-3221 model, capable of operating at up to 11 metres per minute with the highest quality finish. With a mix of smaller and larger machines, the hotel has the flexibility to process a wide range of items in varying quantities as well as the ability to launder guests’ items, as required. At Hotelympia (Stand 2923, London ExCeL 28 April to 1 May) Girbau UK is unveiling its dedicated Hotel Laundry Design and Advice Service devised to help hotels like the Cuillin Hills with the best way to establish and run their own in-house laundry. The laundry design service includes a detailed survey, preparation of 3D technical drawings and installation plans to optimise laundry flows and efficiency.

Rise in Demand for Waterless Urinals

14

Relcross Ltd are reporting a considerable rise in demand for Falcon waterless urinal products over the last twelve months. “The combination of lower installation costs, lower running costs, lower cleaning and maintenance costs together with the environmentally desirable ability to save large amounts of water are striking a loud chord with customers in these tough economic times” says Relcross’ Sales and Marketing Director Stuart McMaster. The waterless urinal is one of those rare products that save money and time while conserving natural resources. Firstly, there is no the purchase price and also makes

them cheaper to install. Secondly, no water means you save 100% in water charges and enjoy reduced sewage charges – both of which are on the rise. Thirdly, maintenance for a Relcross Waterless urinal amounts to periodic changing of the touch free waterless urinal cartridge and the same standard clean up associated with traditional urinals. valves and since no hard water runs through the sewage lines they means reduced costs associated with pipe cleaning. Cleaning is also faster as there is no need to scrub minerals left behind by water. there are huge environmental advantages too. Roughly 5% of the world's fresh water is used to carry away urine and, on average, each Relcross Waterless urinal saves 150,000 litres(33,000 gallons) or more of fresh water per year. If that wasn’t enough there are

that the area around waterless urinals and the entire washroom is cleaner and more hygienic. Finally Relcross waterless urinals also reduce washroom odours by locking urine into the waterless patented urinal cartridge. The cartridge's airtight seal combined with the liquid sealant is estimated to be 500-times more effective than conventional P-traps. Stuart McMaster again, “It’s hard to see why anyone would plan to install a system that requires a mains water feed and waste drain, controls just to use vast quantities of water that has to be paid for, when you can use a system that costs less to buy, only needs a waste drain and uses no water at all!” For more information call 01380 729600 or visit www.waterlesscartridges.co.uk

It all started in 1946 when the late Gerald Burgess founded the GB Cycle Company. In 1959 Gerald was introduced to Eric Blakemore, brothers, who the previous year had purchased the Mayfair Hotel in London. Eric designed the famous Beach Comber bar at the hotel and he asked Gerald if he could make some stacking aluminium banquet chairs for both the Mayfair and the Metropole Hotel in Monte Carlo, which order for 1,000 chairs in total, half of which were exported to Monte Carlo. The success was instant and Gerald Burgess created a new company called Zephyr Furniture

We all know you can buy coffee from your distributor, or hopefully you have a close relationship with a coffee roaster who created a custom blend for your cafÊ ‌ but apart from the blurb on the side of a bag, have you ever stopped to ponder what the process was from coffee tree to cup of coffee?

JURA LAUNCHES STATE-OF-THE-ART SPEED MACHINE High performance speciality coffee at the blink of an eye JURA, a significant innovator in luxury Swiss made bean-to-cup technology, has invested £15,000 in training to help their commercial partners get up to speed on the company’s latest launch, as well as learning new techniques in café efficiencies. More than 120 people attended the exclusive training events held at the Williams F1 Conference Centre in Oxfordshire, and at the York Racecourse, which saw JURA launch the topof-the-range GIGA X8 Professional. In an industry where speed is of the essence, attendees had the chance to see how the new product can create efficiencies for their customers, and how JURA’s technology has innovated to meet the demands of the fast growing end user market. Ideal for use in busy barista bars, restaurants, coffee lounges, bistros and other catering spaces, the latest addition to the JURA range comes with a unique speed function, allowing it to prepare perfect coffee in record time. High performance The high-performance GIGA X8 Professional with its elegant black aluminium finish comes with a sizeable five litre water tank. The large coffee grounds container allows for flexible and mobile use of the state-of-the-art machine, and also incorporates the power of three thermoblocks and three pumps to prepare a range of 29 speciality coffees at just the touch of a button. Technical perfection The machine also includes two ceramic disc grinders to ensure even grinding of the coffee beans for optimum aroma. The discs are made from a wear-free technical ceramic which are amazingly fast and they also reduce grind time by 25 per cent. The GIGA X8 Professional is

also available with a permanent water connection, delivering maximum performance for all caterers alike. Intuitive operation Adding even more convenience for independent café owners, the machine is easy to operate and programme, and has been designed to be very easy to care for. The integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling programmes also reduce the effort involved to a minimum and guarantees TUV-certified hygiene. Fine foam technology As an ingenious feature, the air intake is electrically adjusted by a geared stepper motor. For example, when making a latte macchiato, the machine automatically dispenses hot milk into the glasses, followed immediately by milk foam and finally coffee – saving valuable time. The GIGA X8 Professional is available to purchase at an RRP of £4395.00 + vat. For end users who want the option to pay as they go, JURA can offer the THINKSMART leasing option to its customers who want an alternative to outright purchase.

New Miele Professional BRILLIANT freshwater dishwasher ensures spotlessly clean glasses without need for additional polishing Miele Professional has launched a commercial dishwasher with a freshwater system that cutlery. The BRILLIANT dishwasher guarantees spotless glassware and cutlery and eradicates the need for manual polishing in hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants. The BRILLIANT machine produces immaculate results – and save businesses time and money by eliminating time spent on polishing glassware by hand. The machine, which has 13 wash programmes, also has a fast cycle time of 5 minutes, meaning that the machine is ideal for bars and restaurant kitchens that need to wash many glasses to a high standard, several times a day. Recent research* has shown that clean, sparkling glasses are top of the public’s agenda when wining and dining – of the 2,000 consumers surveyed, nearly a third (32%) said that if they were to experience dirty glasses, crockery or cutlery it’s very unlikely that they would return to the same establishment, whilst nearly nine in ten (88%) said that clean glassware, crockery and cutlery was very important to them. Alongside two inlet valves for hot and cold water, the new BRILLIANT washer also has a third connection for fully or partially de-mineralised water. Water with a low mineral content is used during the rinse cycle in the new ‘Glassware Special’ programme which operates at a maximum temperature of 50°C to ensure that glasses are washed gently. De-mineralised water prevents water stains and means that glasses do not need to be polished manually once the cleaning cycle has come to an end. A further feature, ‘Perfect GlassCare’ automatically adapts water hardness making it ideal for whatever glassware the user is washing. The BRILLIANT’s steam condenser

In combination with the new automatic AutoOpen function, this feature ensures that glassware and cutlery is effectively dried and cools down fast so that the machine can be unloaded quickly. “We are really proud to launch the new BRILLIANT machine to the UK market. It’s the perfect machine for any hospitality business that wants their customers to experience perfect, sparkling glassware and gleaming cutlery during every visit. Plus, we’re excited to offer a freshwater machine with a short cycle time of just 5 minutes.” Among other components, a new electronic heater pump ensures gentle, reduced water pressure during any of the glassware wash cycles. The machines are also very straightforward to use – the salt container, for example, is easily accessed and has a capacity of 2 kg. This tank is located in the door rather than being tucked container extremely simple: it can be done without the need to bend or stoop and without having to remove the lower basket, which may well be heavy and fully loaded. Even greater convenience is offered by AutoClose: this new door closure system automatically shuts the door before the start of a programme.

‘location

Hotelier & Hotel Design - May 2014

A few years ago I was in Washington to Review a couple of hotels. Staying in a Staybridge Suites I was collared by the manager for advice on how to give some personality to the building. Frustrated by a build system where the hotel was built from plans onto a plot similar to previous buildings, no designer involved just the developer, they were concerned at how the interiors lacked style. In the US where brands are 80% of the market and generally land is available, cloning previous designs is straightforward - but each time a clone is created it becomes less individual, drifts further away from the original vision, which becomes diluted. In the UK, as Ampersand shows, the situation is quite different.

40

Over here new builds are the exception rather than the rule and the skill of the hotel interior designer is a sine qua non in developing hotels that work in buildings that may be hundreds of years old. Here the brands represent a minority of the operators. Individual owner/ operators drive the market competitively, creating hotels that become benchmarks in styling, forcing brands to compete. This is especially true in the boutique market, where Starwood spawns ‘W’ out of Westin, Accor gives birth to the M Gallery and IHG tries to create its own boutique brands through Indigo to take a share of the market for more individual hotel experiences. It may be argued that the brand giants are, in themselves, inimical to innovative design.

Corporate decision making can be defensive whilst owners of hotels such as Ampersand or My Hotel, Magdalen Chapter or Cliff House Hotel are driven to compete with design as they otherwise lack the marketing muscle of a Hilton or other large brand.

With over 80% of bookings now being made via the web this may be changing, but certainly creating an attractive hotel in an old building such as the Victorian structure that houses Ampersand poses particular problems for architects and a problem for the owners.

With good food and good service complimenting good design this will become a stalwart (and no doubt profitable) part of the London scene. Mr Hilton argues the key to success was 'location, location, location' and for Ampersand its position within view of London's national museums in South Kensington is key to unlocking this particular door. The spires of the Natural History Museum are clearly visible from the hotel and the V&A, Science Museum and other attractions in the aptly named Museum Road are a gentle

the heavily oversubscribed French lycĂŠe it is not surprising that the hotel also makes every effort to capture lunchtime trade and afternoon teas with well designed and carefully If the brief for each area was clear then the styling created by the the owner desired. However to this observer it leads to some disconnect

between styles in different part of the hotel, although that may just be my taste kicking in. Certainly the design works in each area, and if the intention was to create a slight shock of surprise on moving from space to space then the designers have achieved their aim. The contrast between the cool international sophistication of the lobby and the very English decorative quality of the lounge is marked.

Theatre gives to theatrical

"the aquarium tower provides all the rooms facing onto the atrium with an Ocean View"

Hotel designers talk in a fairly blasé way about ‘theatre’ in interiors. Usually it just means a spot of colour or an unusual feature, a piece of sculpture or commissioned artwork. For Radisson it has taken on a different meaning in their new developments. I featured before their use of a tower of wine as a centre piece of their atrium at the Radisson Stansted. Here in Berlin the feature almost becomes the atrium, and it is so large it totally dominates the interior space. Containing a million litres of water count them twice) the aquarium tower provides all the rooms facing onto the atrium with an “Ocean View”, as the marketing manager likes to say.

Hotelier & Hotel Design - May 2014

Exterior with the glazed roof extension housing the function rooms.

46

Theatrical it certainly is, and it attracts tourists to see it from the hotel entrance area enticing passers-by into the bars and restaurants. However, the hotel wins twice because the maintenance of the aquarium is done by the Sea Life centre which sends a hydraulic lift full of tourists up the centre of the tank throughout the day. The theatre is enhanced by the sight early every morning of two divers cleaning the glass of the tank – something that brings children to the balconies of their rooms in excitement, sometimes followed by more visual interest in the form of anxious pyjama clad parents! There is more to this hotel of course than the see more looking into rooms but never tell, their discretion being absolute). The theme of water throughout the hotel, but its location in the rapidly being rebuilt heart of Berlin, behind the line of the old Berlin Wall gives it a location that other hoteliers would delight in, and is the visible reward to Rezidor’s bravery in coming into this market before other brands thought to do so (visible a few hundred meters away is their Park rooms also having very high rates of occupancy)

Turnkey Thermo Pot This portable, energy efficient, electric instant hot water dispenser keeps water at the desired temperature after boiling. It is ideal for making both tea and coffee when the 98° setting is chosen, and remains at this temperature using just 2 watts of electricity no matter how long the unit is in use. (52) As long as the Thermo Pot is connected to the mains the water does not cool down so users can enjoy hot drinks at the correct temperature whenever they require it. There is a choice of 5 temperature settings. (91) The Thermo Pot is energy efficient due to the (100) thermal outer layer, which also ensures that the appliance

is never too hot to touch, reducing the risk of accidental burns. Using just 680 watts to boil the portable Thermo Pot can be used in situations where the power supply does not support the boiling of a traditional kettle or urn. (151) The large Thermo Pot holds 5 litres of water and dispenses 38 cups (approx) at the touch of a button, so is ideal for meetings, functions, catering events, and hotels. It also provides quick and convenient hot water for pasta, vegetables, sauces, porridge, rice, hot water bottle preparation etc. (200) The Thermo Pot comes in two sizes 5L and 3.5L. Both models are available in black/silver and the 5L also comes in white/silver. (225)
