London's Georgian House Hotel launches eight new bedrooms Eight brand new rooms are now available to guests of London’s Georgian House Hotel, famously home to four mysterious Wizard Chambers and Enchanted Chambers, as the 60-bedroom boutique hotel unveils £100,000 worth of new bedrooms in the final stage of a three year, hotelwide interior design refresh.
Refurbishment works, completed by hotel owner Serena von der Heyde, include both structural and decorative improvements, with the chosen colour palette showcasing some of Farrow & Ball’s timeless hues. This latest interior update brings all rooms within the family-owned hotel, built in 1851, to the same elegant and stylish finish as all other bedrooms, suites and apartments.
of the journey. The bespoke nature of the rooms reflects our commitment to highly personalised experiences and service. We are making a beautiful and unique place which is in tune with the 1850s heritage, but our design is highly creative. In every room guests will find details that catch the eye, design that inspires, something beautiful. My vision is for a hotel where the experience of staying is an important part of the experience of London.”
To appeal to the family market and those wanting more space, two top floor bedrooms have been combined into one large room, featuring two double beds. Seven further bedrooms have had their original chimney breasts uncovered and restored to reveal their former splendour, often in the form of marble fire surrounds and mantels, and original Victorian tiles. The en-suite bathrooms Speaking of the renovations, which she self-funded and adjoining these rooms have been enlarged and planned in collaboration with interior designer Diana Holmes, Serena von der Heyde said: “Our long term plan completely redecorated with three of the bathrooms now is to reach 5 star guest accommodation status, and so this boasting full size baths, including a free-standing polished aluminium bathtub from SW1 Bathrooms. move to improve quality and space is an important part

A closer look at 3D-printing in commercial furniture design - RIO
6
Created by Mehran Gharleghi from Studio INTEGRATE and Morgan Studio, RIO is ground-breaking in using 3D printing to create beautiful, comfortable and robust chairs for the commercial furniture market. RIO explores the relationship of the craft of yesterday with the craft of tomorrow. The resulting designs combine renowned timber craftsmanship from Morgan with Mehran's talent for re-thinking materials and applying techniques that have only previously been used experimentally -- in this case 3D printing. He uses a polyamide to give a white textured finish and also a smooth metallised resin. Morgan Design Director, Katerina McMahon comments, "This is an exciting new departure for us at Morgan and indeed new for the market. 3D printing is recognised commercially for small items like jewellery and accessories and then many experimental projects but not much in between. Not yet featured in furniture for a wider audience.” Three versions of RIO all present a clearly expressed structure: with tactile timber back, minimal but comfortable upholstered back or 3D printed intricate lattice framework.

Taylor’s Classics supplies Simpsons Restaurant, Birmingham

In early September, Taylor's Classics delivered the final pieces of furniture to the refurbished Simpsons restaurant in Birmingham. They worked closely with Andreas Antona and Luke Tipping as well as Leisure Concepts of Kenilworth to create a fresh and spacious feel to this long standing, Edgbaston based, Michelin star restaurant. The restaurant has been extended to allow additional dining beneath a beautiful glass roof. Taylor's Classics supplied a wide range of contemporary chairs, tables, sofas and outdoor furniture. The private dining room includes a
4.2 metre oak table to seat 14 whilst the lounge areas include our new Benchairs 936 tub chairs. Andreas Antona said, “I am delighted that we have achieved the simple, elegant and open interiors that we were looking for as part of the redevelopment of Simpsons Restaurant. It is always a pleasure to work with Taylor’s Classics because the furniture is beautifully made, practical and the service and advice from the team makes everything simple and straightforward.”

Knowcross: Every Second Counts As ancient wisdom has often insisted, time is money and given the fact that hospitality is a quick turnaround business, every second lost has a knock-on effect on your profitability. Knowcross has a suite of specialised products that are designed with this in mind. Nikhil Nath, CEO of Knowcross talks us through how they work.Managing guest requests and maintenance issues in an efficient and prompt way is a constant challenge for hotels. Communication of jobs to be done between management and staff takes up an enormous amount of time. Take the example of a guest reporting that the air conditioning in their room is not working. The front desk have to log the enquiry, report it to engineering who then have to track down one of their engineers and assign him the job. After some time, the chain of communication restarts to check that the job is completed. Overall, it’s a long-winded process. KNOW Service, one of the software products that is part of the Knowcross Suite, manages the entire process of logging a job, assigning it, and tracking it, thereby eliminating the need for staff to call each other.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
This saves on average 300 seconds per job, which in turn saves the hotel thousands in labour costs per month. As every hotelier knows, prompt and efficient service is a sure way to bring guests back to the hotel. Every hotel has its fair share of dissatisfied guests, but timeliness in dealing with the issues reduces the damage and the amount of money coughed up by the hotel in compensation. KNOW Glitch lets management know about a guest complaint
14
immediately, allowing them to act upon it instantly, much to the customer’s delight – and preventing a bad online review that might go viral. The housekeeping department lies at the heart of a hotel’s operation. KNOW Housekeeping helps the managers, coordinators and attendants in housekeeping save enormous amounts of time while ensuring that arriving guests don’t have to wait for a clean room. The system replaces phone calls with an app that runs on smart phones and communicates real time information and job instructions to attendants and supervisors. The system has delivered labour savings of up to ten percent at hotels in the UK. With the National Minimum Wage expected to double in the UK over the next five years, this is particularly interesting for UK hoteliers, as much of their workforce are on an hourly wage, (i.e. cleaners, bar and waiting staff and receptionists) and they will therefore be looking for ways to reduce costs and keep their profit margins in check. Digitalisation of checklists and reports with the KNOW Inspection app saves money on paper and ink, as well as being environmentally friendly. For every 100 hotels that use Knowcross software, an equivalent of 400 trees are saved per year. The KNOW Service app can also be programmed to notify housekeeping to change the bedsheets every other day as per the guest’s request, saving money on laundry costs as well as being kinder to the environment. Knowcross software is hosted on the cloud and can be interfaced to existing hotel property management systems such as Opera, Fidelio, Itesso, Protel and others. All of Knowcross’ mobile apps are available for the Apple iOS and Android platforms.

NEW! Bed Bug
Heat Treatment Equipment
For Hotels
B
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
ritish Bug Control, which offer hotels 100% guaranteed eradication of bed bug outbreaks, is breaking new ground by offering hoteliers equipment to carry out their own heat treatment on bed bugs. On display for the first time anywhere in the world at the Independent Hotels Show, the mobile unit allows the hotel manager to react immediately to a complaint about bed bug bites, and means that rooms can be treated by maintenance and back in action the same day, saving lots of hassle and money. Heat is acknowledged as the best way to tackle bed bugs because, unlike insecticides, it kills the eggs as well as the insects themselves. The unit, which requires only one operator and no special pest control qualifications, runs off normal three-pin electric sockets. It works at the touch of a button by generating hot air, which is pumped to a thermal tent pod folded over the bed and furniture. Temperatures are monitored with remote sensors and the consul produces a stamp dated report indicating the room number with temperature and time details. Hotel rooms can be treated effectively very quickly and all

training is provided. The introduction of this system represents an amazing opportunity for hotels to take control of the growing bed bug problem for the first time. British Bug Control also offers its guaranteed eradication solutions through its own services, plus a complimentary range of products designed specifically for the hotel trade, including quick-view bed bug monitors, luxury bed bug mattress and pillow encasements, mattress disposal bags and heat treatment preparation kits; all under their Cimexine Sure-Guard brand. Linens and laundry: what your guests really think
In particular, past experiences of a hotel’s linen has proven to be one of the key elements potential guests consider when deciding which hotel to stay at. The latest research revealed 96 percent of guests would be less likely to return to a hotel if they had been subjected to poor quality or stained bed linen and towels. Perhaps more concerning is the 95 percent who said they would be vocal to others about their less than perfect experience. This sort of damage to the reputation of a hotel is often irreparable and the risk is not worth taking, particularly as 97 percent of guests check the freshness of towels and linen during their stay. Consequently, managers need to ensure their hotels are kitted out with high quality and clean linen and towels at all times. While inhouse laundry operations can be effective, they are not without their drawbacks as they are often costly, require a huge amount of time to run and breakdowns are always an unavoidable possibility. As a result, more and more hotels are looking to specialist laundry service suppliers to outsource the cleaning of their linen. For example, Berendsen, the leading provider of textile services to UK hotels, offers a full range of reliable and stress-free services to meet the requirements of every hotel and its guests. It provides bed linen and towel collections to suit the specific needs of the business, making sure all items are consistently washed and finished to a high standard before they are delivered back at agreed times. Berendsen also offers a linen hire service, meaning hotels can avoid having capital tied up in textiles. There is something for every budget and style as there are many options, including different towel weights, linen types and duvet designs. In addition, a bespoke service is available for larger and group hotels that require a specific individual look or branded linen.
www.berendsen.co.uk
Ultimately, return visits from guests always follow a comfortable and pleasant first stay. Leaving the experts to deal with the dirty laundry means hotels can not only enjoy the benefits of a dependable and cost effective service but they can have peace of mind that the expectations of guests will be consistently met, helping to improve the guest experience and boost the likelihood of return visits in the future.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
It is often the smallest of details that make the biggest impact. Rarely is this truer than in the hotel and hospitality industry. From valet service and friendly concierge to the design of the room and the quality and cleanliness of the linen, it is all these details and more that shape the customer experience when staying in a hotel. Therefore, excellence is a must.

Convergence: Sleep 2015 creates new ground in hotel design For the first time at Sleep, Europe’s most important event for hotel design and development on 24 and 25 November, a series of installations and conference presentations will examine the opportunities presented by shared spaces within modern hotels. As hospitality lifestyle brands surge in popularity, lobby and bedroom concepts are melding work, relaxation and play. Challenging the norms in spatial use are three leading architecture and design studios which will investigate how combining apparently contradictory influences can result in bold innovation.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
With its mission to redefine habits, multidisciplinary practice Il Prisma Group will deconstruct perceptions of how interior spaces can be used. Dubbed Social Harbour, the studio’s concept will be a refuge for “new nomads”, digital travellers, and smart workers – a place to express individuality whilst seeking out like-minded tribes. Designed as an indoor/outdoor experience, the atmosphere can be transformed through design and technology according to each user’s preferences.
24
The Manser Practice, in association with exhibitor Elegant Clutter, a team of artists and craftspeople who create bespoke artwork and accessory collections for hotels and restaurants, will consider the meaning of convergence when opposites are fused to create something new and unexpected. “Exciting things happen when the functional and fanciful merge”, says Jane Lawrence, Director of Interior Design. “This is particularly true in hotel design where it is important that the hotel fulfils the guest’s practical needs but also stimulates the senses.”
International architecture and design studio Perkins+Will will examine the rise of the “frictionless office” as improved mobile connectivity leads to more flexible work environments. As “the office” turns into an increasingly abstract concept, hotels are emerging default workplaces for many professionals. With experience in hospitality, fitout and workplace consulting, the team will identify the potential opportunities in this behavioural shift and how to optimise them in hotels. In addition to exploring the Convergence installations, visitors can gain further insight from the designers on day two of the Sleep Conference when they each present the thinking behind their proposals followed by discussion with moderator Guy Dittrich. Sleep is on 24th & 25th November with a late opening until 8pm on Tuesday 24th when visitors can enjoy the design inspiration and networking opportunities during the show’s cocktail hour from 6.30-7.30pm. Sleep’s official event Partner is the European Hotel Design Awards which will culminate in a dinner on the evening of Monday 23 November when the winners will be announced in a glittering ceremony at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London. Registration to Sleep 2015 is now open – tickets can be secured by booking now.
Sleep represents the best in hotel design, development and architecture. Our curated exhibition, concept spaces and conference inspire hotel interiors across the globe. Be part of something special.

Sanjay Saptarshi, Head of Hotel Operations at NFS added: “The Lovat is a fine example of a boutique hotel that is using technology exceptionally well across all areas of its business to deliver a great experience to guests both online and at hotel level.” roomMaster from NFS is a fully integrated property management software for hotels from ten to more than 1,000 rooms. COORDN8: design that unites Europe Something that is often difficult in politics has proven to be a great success in textile design: outstanding European cooperation and the development of a joint product that appeals equally to the tastes of the Brits, the Germans and other European nations. This refers to COORDN8, the new print collection from interior expert drapilux. Easy to combine with style: with COORDN8, the curtains match the furniture covers and the blackout blind matches the bed throw. Popular basic materials from drapliux are united with modern designs boasting a Nordic touch. The ideas for the collection come from British designer Emily Tyers. “My brief was to create a versatile, contemporary collection,” says the interior designer and Creative Director of design studio Etre. Instead of using the classic and baroque designs typical of British styles as a starting point, she drew on new British designs with Scandinavian influences. “Inspired by nature, it was my intention to create recurring, organic shapes that are ideally suited to a print collection, like the outlines of branches, for example,” explains Tyers. Her designs were brought to life in close collaboration with the drapilux design workshop in Emsdetten, Germany. Kirstin Herrmann, Head Designer at drapilux: “The designs are so stylised that they do not divide opinion and are suited to tastes in Germany, the UK, Italy, Sweden or France.”
“As designs inspired by nature continue to be popular all over Europe, we have decided to launch the COORDN8 collection on the entire European market,” commented Kristin Herrmann. The special thing about it is that the items harmonise with each other, not only within a colour palette, but also in combination with other colourways. This means that fresh colour accents can be created. The following colour schemes are available: green, orange, blue and aubergine, as well as warm neutral and cold neutral. drapilux customers can choose from a potpourri of standard collections. The fabric options include canvas and other basic weaves, making it possible to mix and match everything from sheer curtains and decorative fabrics through to upholstery. Above a certain order quantity, the fire-retardant items can be equipped with the air-purifying, sound-absorbing and antimicrobial functions that drapilux is known for. Drapilux presents the new print range COORDN8 on the occasion of Sleep 2015. Europe’s leading exhibition for hotel design takes place from 25th to 26th November in the Business Design Centre London Schmitz-Werke GmbH + Co.KG T +49 2572 / 927 743 anita.kaupel@schmitz-werke.com

Fibre optics made easy “A marriage made in heaven” is how Peter Fagan, sales director at fibre optic lighting firm Starscape describes the combination of optical fibres and the new generation of LED-based fibre optic light sources. This woven sphere of sparkle fibre can be made in a range of sizes and can be hung singly or in clusters.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
Blue Infinity star panels resulted in a significant increase in business for this Midlands restaurant.
42
“We first started to look at LEDs as a replacement for traditional halogen-based light sources more than a decade ago,” he recalls, “but it was clear that they weren’t bright enough or reliable enough and the whites had far too much of a blue cast in them. However, in the past few years LED technology has developed to the stage where we were able to make the transition from halogen to LEDs at the beginning of 2013. There are now also LED-based units which compare reasonably even with metal halide light sources.” The result is that fibre optic lighting installations now are more economical to operate, have lower maintenance requirements and are generally quieter in operation since they don’t require cooling fans. Largely as a consequence of not needing fans they are also usually more compact than the light sources which they’ve superseded. This means that finding a suitable place to put the light source – the first step in designing a fibre optic lighting installation – is generally easier than it might have been a few years ago, and this can produce cost benefits in terms of shorter fibre runs.
Fibre optic star points add a touch of magic to a garden path.
Starscape uses the combination of LED light sources and optical fibres in a wide range of decorative lighting applications from star ceilings and chandeliers to paving and decking lighting for outdoor areas.
“Star ceilings are our core business,” says Peter Fagan, “and we’re confident that nobody approaches this with quite as much genuine enthusiasm as we do. Whether it’s a £200 DIY kit for a nursery ceiling or a large commercial project, we’re keen to ensure that the finished result will be entrancing.” Starscape’s Infinity modular star ceiling system – originally developed for the high-end home cinema sector – allows customers to fit a star ceiling quickly and with a minimum of fuss and disruption, and the firm also can supply star panels to fit conventional 600 x 600mm ceiling grids. Because Infinity is modular – based on 1000 x 1000mm lightweight panels – it is completely scaleable and suitable for phased installations. The default colour of the Infinity panel is black, but other finishes are available for non-cinema applications. Fibre optic chandeliers can add life to a sterile space – in a lobby or stairwell – and since there’s no need to change bulbs in the new LED light sources there’s far less of a maintenance issue involved than might have been the case in the past. Thinking of using small LEDs in accent lighting? A single compact LED light source can illuminate up to 40 accent or crystal fittings, with DMX functionality available at modest cost. Based in north Northumberland, Starscape has shipped to customers on every continent bar Antarctica and South America.

Furniture specifically manufactured,
fit for the Queens’ College Cambridge students Queens’ College Cambridge Selected Cambridgeshire based, Strata Panels to design and manufacture furniture for over 100 student bed rooms. Buying direct from the manufacturer – Strata Panels Helen Heath, Queens’ College’s Head of Housekeeping, wanted a local furniture manufacturer to come up with a solution of making bespoke contract furniture that would fit in with the historic feel and dark timbers of the 1911 built Queens’ College Dokett building, as well as a more modern looking style Queens’ College Cripps Court built during the 1970s. Strata Panels based a short distance along the A14 just north of Huntingdon responded to the challenge having made student furniture for over 15 years. “Strata’s Mark Garrood listened to the brief and produced sample pieces of furniture that met our exact criteria and at competitive prices.” - Helen

oak crafted edges that were machined to give the detail a period look and were stained dark brown to match the exposed timbers and wall panelling which gives the building its character. Handles were sourced from India that complemented the furniture’s appearance and completed the antique look. The furniture for Queens’ College Cripps Court had 26mm thick oak veneered carcasses and was finished in a clear lacquer.
Queens’ College Furniture Project – Strata Panels Strata produced wardrobes, desks, desk pedestals, chests of drawers, bookcases, under bed storage drawers and bedside cabinets for 43 rooms in the Queens’ College Dokett building and 64 rooms in Queens’ College Cripps Court. Working closely with the college, installation time was compressed to fit in with building contractors and the start of the autumn term. By working weekends and late into the nights Strata Panel’s own
team of installers completed the 107 rooms in just over a week. Smaller items such as bedside cabinets and storage drawers were delivered pre-assembled, whereas the larger items were assembled in situ. Babis Karakoulas, The Domestic Bursar for the Queens’ College, on seeing the furniture after it had been installed, complimented Strata on how well the appearance fitted in with the age and character of the Dokett building.
Cambridgeshire’s contract joinery best kept secret – Strata Panels Strata Panels are small enough to be flexible and able to meet individual requirements, yet large enough to cope with the volume roll out. Hot on the heels of completing the project at Queens’ College, Strata are now manufacturing furniture for a new student accommodation block in Central London comprising 142 bedroom sets. Astro brings elegant simplicity to the hotels of the world 1997 – the time of Cool Britannia, YBA's (Young British Artists), and increased pride in UK creativity. John Fearon and James Bassant saw an opportunity to re-establish British lighting design for high end domestic and hospitality settings and bring it to an international audience.
The Astro design ethos creates an elegantly clear visual language that defines what contemporary lighting should be: honest, accessible, engaging and durable. With a team of eight creative design engineers, headed up by Design Director James Bassant, there is a wealth of experience to take Astro’s passion for Pure British Design and bring it to life in the finest homes and hotels throughout the world.
Malta project
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
With a strong claim to be the finest luxury hotel and spa to open in the Mediterranean this decade, the fivestar Kempinski San Lawrenz in Malta has specified Astro lighting for its exquisite guestrooms, suites and residences.
48
Styled as an exclusive, private resort in a valley of semitropical gardens and pools, the San Lawrenz has been designed in a classic yet contemporary style. A pure aesthetic and appreciable quality were essential factors in its choice of furniture and lighting. Among almost 900 Astro luminaires across the project, the Park Lane family features strongly with wall, table and floor variants, including standard and Grande versions. Matt nickel finishes, with mainly white but some black shades, create a sophisticated but understated ambience. The bathroom experience is enhanced by Sabina ceiling lights and Niimi LED vanity mirrors.
Industrial chic Astro has supplied most of the decorative lighting to one of London’s most exciting new hotel projects. With covetable views of Canary Wharf and a short ferry-hop from central London, Hilton DoubleTree’s Docklands hotel in a converted 17th century wharf building provides highly desirable accommodation in the capital. Astro had the ideal lighting solutions to make the most of the inspiring structure and location. Astro’s pure design ethos complements perfectly the industrial chic created by architecture and design studio ICA. The exposed brickwork and original architectural features, combined with distinctive contemporary furniture, are the ideal context for Astro’s Lago and Chou wall lights, Ravello table and floor lights and Rafina pendants. Astro’s co-founder John Fearon said: “Prestigious hotel projects are a very important part of Astro’s business internationally. To be associated with Hilton and ICA in this way is a great affirmation of Astro’s quality and design credentials.” Astro supplied well over 1,000 luminaires for the project.

Value engineering exercise and subsequent design changes where necessary and preparation for final fit-out works. The unique design features, relevant to this restaurant’s Lebanese theme, incorporate elements of Arabic influence with particular attention to arabesque detailing such as intricate in-laid floor patterns, decorative wall niches, mosaics and mashrabiya patterns in the millwork and some furniture, creating the look and feel
of an authentic Lebanese fine dining restaurant in an interesting, unique and elegant way. The stunning show kitchen, with its charcoal grills and exciting show cooking elements, provides a dramatic backdrop. The exotic aromas and hustle from the busy show kitchen also provide an exciting and dramatic dining experience. Mix of seating types from intimate twos and fours to group seating and relaxing lounge, dining and shisha terrace areas complete this fine dining experience. The design provides a thrilling and interesting restaurant, well planned with attention to detail. The design is interesting, fun and unique, meeting all of the operator’s brand standards as well as achieving an authentic Lebanese feel; timeless and elegant, incorporating elements of contemporary design. Keeping the cash flowing for the Christmas trade The funding landscape has changed for good. Companies seeking finance in the run-up to the festive season can now benefit from more flexible products and faster service than ever before
W
ith the Christmas party season fast approaching, bars, hotels and restaurants throughout the UK are busy buying in stock, hiring additional staff and refreshing the decor. Investment at this time is essential to keep the tills ringing throughout the peak trading period. However, finding the finance required has been difficult in recent years. As bank lending has fallen, hospitality businesses have been amongst the worst affected. For a start, many are small firms which are regarded by lenders as a greater risk and, because their trade is often seasonal, they may have difficulty in proving their ability to service a loan and commit to regular repayments.
Hotelier & Hospitality Design
Fortunately, alternative finance providers are helping to bridge the gap, and offering faster and more flexible sources of finance. Ashley Business Finance has been providing finance to the hospitality sector since 1993. In the past few years it has stepped up its lending in response to the increased demand and also introduced specialist products designed with the needs of hospitality businesses in mind.
56
Cafes, bars, microbreweries, hotels, restaurants and catering firms are regular clients. Lisa Mayers of Ashley Business Finance says: “The run-up to Christmas and early summer are peak times for demand. Often companies just want rapid access to cash to build up their stock levels, smarten up their premises or ease cashflow during busy periods. In other cases, they may require larger sums to carry out renovations, open a new venue or acquire another franchise.
“Having worked with the hospitality firms for over 20 years, we have an in-depth understanding of their needs. Loans are the most popular product, but for those with seasonal or fluctuating trade, we have introduced the Business Cash Advance, an innovative product which allows them to make repayments in line with the business.” The Business Cash Advance is suitable for any business which accepts credit or debit cards and offers funding up to £100,000. Repayments are conveniently made by a fixed percentage being taken each time a customer pays by credit and debit cards throughout the fixedterm repayment period. Ashley recently celebrated a record two months, paying out over £2m to almost 150 businesses during July and August. “The funding landscape has changed for good,” says Lisa. “Evidence suggests alternative finance providers have now overtaken the banks in terms of providing funding for SMEs and can offer products more suited to their needs. For hospitality businesses in need of finance, it’s time to explore the options.” For further information see www.ashleyfinance.co.uk
