THE IMPORTANCE OF FURNITURE AND FURNISHINGS IN HOTELS

Q&A WITH MARY MERRILLS With growing internet sites such as booking. com and tripadvisor, consumers are becoming ever more discerning when it comes to hotels. Here, Mary Merrills, marketing manager of the January Furniture Show, tells us why furniture and furnishings have such an important role in the hotel market and what she looks for when it comes to choosing the right hotel for her stay. Where’s the nicest place you’ve stayed? And why? Claridges - I’ve been lucky enough to stay there twice. Everything about it is a joy - the sumptuous furnishings, the individual character, the history, the perfect customer service and central location for everything London. Loved it!

trends will take off that year. I end up wanting everything! Describe your dream hotel? One that is big enough to have good facilities but not everything in them is the same. It would have modern, but The rooms would be individual with lush fabric covered, statement headboards, harmonious bright but warm colour schemes, comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, nice smellies, tea/coffee facilities and of course a nice view not a car park or an air-conditioning unit! All tied together serving interesting cocktails. What do you see as a big trend at this year’s January Furniture Show for the contract market?

by Booking.com What are the three items you look for in a hotel room? Funky, but comfortable furnishings, a kettle so that I can make tea and a walk in shower. How can furniture and furnishings set the scene in a hotel?

What’s the best thing about staying away from home?

How could hotels be better?

Mitre Linen MD Stephen Broadhurst said, “This is the planned together with our partner Hypnos. “It is a delight to meet with our customers and to have the opportunity to showcase our products in situ to hoteliers who can’t easily come to visit our showroom in Wales. We know their time is precious and this type of events allows us to make things as easy as possible for them. Leave a positive Lasting impression

www.berendsen.co.uk

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

With guest expectations of hotel linen quality and cleanliness higher than ever, Paul Swift, Business Development Manager at Berendsen UK, explains why outsourcing textile services can help hotels meet guest demands and leave a positive lasting impression.

40

New research into the attitudes of guests towards hotel linen has highlighted the true extent to which linen quality and cleanliness impact on a guest’s impression of a hotel. The research uncovered how 96 percent of interviewed guests would be less likely to return to a hotel if the bed linen and towels are marked or of a poor quality, while, to make matters worse, 95 percent of respondents stated that they would tell others about their bad experience. Considering the highly competitive nature of the hotel sector, it is in the best interests of hotels to ensure linen quality and cleanliness meet expectations if guests are to return in future. At present, the majority of hotels in the UK are outsourcing the cleaning of their linen to a specialist laundry services supplier, but what

are the reason for this? Operating an in-house laundry facility comes with many factors to consider. One of the most important is the investment of time. This includes the time needed to procure or organise the leasing of suitable linen, the substantial volume of time it takes staff to operate washing and drying machines on a daily basis, and the time required to check the condition of linen. Another key consideration is the cost of owning the washer and dryers, including associated costs such as electricity, water, service and maintenance – as well as the consequences of any machine downtime. By outsourcing to an external provider, hotel managers remove the stress, pressure and costs of these factors and instead simplify their processes. Many service providers offer bed linen and towel collections to meet the needs of a broad range of hotels, saving time and energy in the procurement process. They also take responsibility for collecting, them back as required. And because

external providers are responsible for their own electricity and water usage, hotels cut their washer and dryer ownership and operations costs. outsourcing make a convincing argument on paper, hotel operations teams may have reservations over the laundry service provider’s ability to deliver linen on time and to the standards required. As many of the UK’s leading hotel chains have found, the key is to work alongside a leading supplier that has the experience, assets and size to ensure the needs of a hotel is consistently met and to a high standard. The resources invested in in-house laundry facilities are considerable. By outsourcing laundry responsibilities to an external specialist provider, hotel managers and housekeeping teams can meet guest’s expectations as well as save valuable time, energy and money – which can be reinvested in other areas of the hotel to further improve overall service and leave guests with a positive lasting impression.

The Airscent Atom is the company’s newest innovation in workplace fragrancing. Using ‘Piezo’ technology, high frequency resonating plates push 100% pure fragrance oil through microscopic holes, up of tiny atomised molecules, longer when compared with traditional aerosol systems, resulting in a longer lasting fragrance impression rather than a short aerosolised burst of fragrance which is soon gone. With its virtually silent and compact nature, the Piezo technology is also highly

friendly. Unlike an aerosol based product, the Airscent Atom has no propellants which are released into the air, just pure fragrance oils blended with Odouraze odour neutraliser which help to combat malodours, destroying bad smells and eliminating odours in washrooms and workspaces. According to research by PHS, 83% of workers believe that an unpleasant smelling washroom negatively impacts on staff in the workplace. In order to boost workplace moral and create a pleasant working environment, PHS Washrooms has worked with fragrance experts to develop a range of scents from ‘Punchy Orange’ to ‘Floral Breeze’, which are certain to satisfy the senses.

Gary Seaton, Sales Director of PHS Washrooms, comments: “From our research, we know that having a pleasant smelling workplace is important to employees, impacting on productivity and wellbeing. We are therefore delighted to unveil our latest fragrance innovation, having worked hard with our product development team to create a product centred on the cutting edge Piezo technology. “Not only is the Airscent features making it suitable for virtually any space, it is made with the highest quality materials and looks good too.” For more information about the Airscent Atom, which is now available exclusively from PHS Washrooms, visit www.phs.co.uk/atom

ALLIANCE Leading Supplier to the Hospitality Industry Do you sometimes feel like you’re spinning plates, figuratively & literally? It’s no wonder, running a fast paced commercial kitchen requires all the essential elements from sourcing and ordering fresh produce, prepping the food, cooking & service to wash down to all work seamlessly! How much attention do you pay to the unsung heroes of the kitchen, the equipment you use daily in the prep, cooking, cleaning & storing of your food? Choosing the right equipment to suit your budget & your kitchen is essential in running a smooth operation. With this in mind here are some key considerations to think about when ordering your next piece of equipment: Space: How much space do you have, what will you store in it, will surface, how and who will use it,

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

you going to be moving it, if so are casters important.

44

Cost: Not only should you consider the initial outlay for your purchase, there are wider reaching costs, you as a business should be mindful of. Is the equipment as environmentally friendly as it can be, are you disposing of any old kit in an environmentally friendly manner? Durability: Yes there are enticingly good deals out there on any product you could possibly need in your kitchen. It goes without saying that some

are made better than others, and as the cliché goes, you get what you pay for! Opt for cheaper, unknown, unbranded goods and you could pay the price later (pun intended!) If your equipment is billed as stainless steel, try and stick a magnate to it, if it sticks it’s possible that it’s made of inferior quality stainless steel. Cleaning: Food safety & more so the safety of your customers is key, is the kit your buying easy to clean, does it have door seals that pop off & on for quick cleaning, can you easily get to those hard to reach nooks and crannies? Warranty & Service: Any reputable supplier or equipment manufacturer will offer a minimum of 1-2 years parts and labour warranty; however this varies from supplier to supplier. To ensure your sparking bit of kit you should have it serviced at least once a year. Choosing kitchen equipment is an essential yet stressful part of your job. is a British made telephone or GSM based intercom. The system is able to plug in to an analogue extension of your telephone system so that a visitor access request can be answered on any telephone or cordless phone on the premises. This perfectly suits late arrivals being able to contact a member of staff at any time, whether the call is set to ring their cordless phone or a mobile phone. Access can be granted by a press of the ‘#’ key after identity If it is not possible to provide an extension at the entrance point, a dedicated ‘BT’ type line can be used. This would enable the Telguard to make a call to the main telephone switchboard or it could call a mobile phone number so that a porter would not have to stop what they were doing to allow access for a guest. Alternatively one of our GSM systems could be used. This simply means that a mobile phone call is made from the Telguard as it is not connected to a telephone line. This system is also able to provide video to the mobile phone (Android device) that answers the call from the entrance. So now the porter or employee is able to see who is at the entrance before they allow them access. This could even be actioned remotely from another site!

for different numbers to be active during certain periods. This could be when reception closes or a different employee starts a shift. This also applies to access codes and trade access. Staff are able to call the Telguard (it has it’s own SIM card or phone line) and if their number is in the Authorised Access Memory, they cancel the call as soon as it starts ringing and the entrance will open. This is all recorded on the activity logs that can be downloaded remotely.

The memory of the system is programmed with a telephone number and a button on the Telguard is associated with that number. When a visitor presses that button, the Telguard speed dials the associated number and the phone at the other end will ring. On answering the call the user is then able to converse with the caller and if they wish to allow them access they simply press the ‘#’ key on the phone they are using. This command signals the door/gate/barrier to open.

The Reverie Saigon, one of the world’s most eagerly anticipated new hotels, has set a date for its grand opening – 1st September 2015.

the Austrian general manager (and vice president of operations for WMC Group) whose roots in Vietnam go back to 2008.

The 286-room property anchors the 39-storey Times Square building in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1. Featuring incomparable views of the storied city and the Saigon River, the latest addition to the Leading Hotels of the World portfolio is a study in unapologetic splendour.

Seven years in the making, the hotel heralds the dawn of a new day in hospitality for Vietnam. Where previous debuts have sought reference to Vietnam’s colonial-era aesthetics and East Asian roots, The Reverie Saigon is a transcendent gesture that invokes dreamy contemplation of palaces and chateaus.

While the exterior exudes sleek contemporary appeal, the interior is an exploration of Italian extravagance, from rooms and suites individually public spaces both dazzling and whimsical. “With this hotel, we have tried to create an experience of accommodation that is so singular, so splendid and so unexpected in the one-time Pearl of the Orient that the hotel becomes a place that stays with guests long after they’ve checked-out,” said Herbert Laubichler-Pichler,

With furnishings that pander to aristocratic yearnings, linens of soaring thread count and walls of textured Italian silk, the rooms and suites take to the Saigon stage as the most expensive accommodation available in the city. Rooms range in size from 43 - 53 square metres (462 - 570 square feet) and the suites from 63 - 313 square metres (678 3,369 square feet).

Another venue – The Long @ Times Square counter that vaults the distance between Dong Khoi Street and Nguyen Hue Boulevard, the city’s two most fashionable thoroughfares. The Spa spans 1,200 square metres on two and designs to establish a reputation for itself as the most luxurious retreat in Vietnam.

suite of TechnoGym machines and inspiring Outdoor Jacuzzis and indoor steam rooms and saunas round out the amenities for the recreationally inclined.

Additionally, Times Square building is home to The one and two-bedroom, full-service, extended-stay apartments whose residents will have their own separate entrance and private lounge. Fifteen versatile function spaces round out the collective that has become a much sought-after destination in Vietnam, including the La Scala Grand Ballroom – the largest, pillar-less ballroom in the city and aptly named for its silk and onyxlined walls and Swarovski crystal chandeliers. The hotel’s location in downtown Ho Chi Minh City – or Saigon as it’s still commonly called – is as exquisitely placed as its interior appointments. The city’s historic Lam Son Square, City Hall and the banks of the Saigon River are within a Minh City all lie within a kilometre of the hotel.

Three of the hotel’s restaurants – The Royal Pavilion (Chinese), R&J (Italian) and Café Cardinal (French) – are destinations in their own right, each a captivating work of elegance, each driven by lofty culinary ambitions.
