Benoy establishes presence in Australia Benoy, the international Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is excited to announce the firm’s expansion into Australia with the opening of a Marketing and Liaison Office in Melbourne. The establishment of Benoy’s on-the-ground presence is in response to a number of successful project bids within the country.
Capitalising on the firm’s international network, Benoy Melbourne will be reinforced by the design company’s ‘One Benoy’ ethos which facilitates the open sharing of resources and talent between its studios.
“We are incredibly excited to be consolidating our position in Australia; the country presents such great opportunities.
Providing immediate design support to Benoy’s growing portfolio in Australia will be the firm’s larger teams in Singapore, Hong Kong and London.
Settling in Asia in 2002 and subsequently opening five studios across the region over the last ten years, Australia represents a natural progression for Benoy,” commented Tom Cartledge, Benoy Global Director.
“I believe the relationships we have already built with some of Australia’s most notable developers and consultants are the tangible results of Benoy’s global mindset as well as an appreciation of its design integrity,” said Claire Reynoldson.
Benoy has appointed former London Studio member Claire Reynoldson to lead the studio.
Benoy’s proven portfolio is a testimony to its creative and commercial success. “I am looking forward to leading Benoy in Australia.”
An Australian native, Claire brings her knowledge of the local market and innate understanding of Benoy’s capability and indeed personality to her role. “We believe Benoy’s strong track record of entering new markets has come from our approach to appoint from within. Claire’s relocation from London to join us in Melbourne and lead our initiative has allowed us to continue our vision,” added Tom.
Benoy has the ability to draw on an international resource base to deliver innovative, thoughtful and forward- thinking design to its clients. This has proved to be a compelling offer in its markets around the world; Benoy now has projects in over 60 countries. “We are confident that Australia will play a significant part in our continued success,” concluded Tom.
Reside At Canary Wharf Canary Wharf Group’s first ever homes will go on sale in July as part of the first wave of residential development on the Canary Wharf Estate. The residences form part of Canary Wharf’s new phase to the east of the existing Estate which will comprise 3,200 new homes, a quarter of which will be affordable, plus offices, shops, a school and doctor’s surgery. There will also be capacity to build a further 400 new homes in the future. 10 Park Drive is a unique tower designed by architects Stanton Williams and Make Architects. The design makes the most of the uninterrupted views to the south, east and west including the O2, public parks and gardens on the water’s edge, and includes 74 studios, 115 one-bedroom apartments, 141 two-bedroom apartments and 15 three-bedroom apartments. Stirling Prize winning architectural practice Stanton Williams has designed a mid-rise 13 storey element which adjoins a 42 storey tower incorporating 345 individual residential developer-update.co.uk
units with interiors designed by award winning firm, Make Architects. All of the residential properties will be built to the highest design standards with every intricate detail considered, planned and designed accordingly. The new mixed-use development is located on a 13 hectare site adjacent to the existing buildings that form the globally recognised Canary Wharf skyline.
Get creative with gabion stone
Smiths Gabion stone is primarily used to fill gabion baskets for ground stabilisation. For example the retaining walls of terraces or the stabilisation of river banks, the embankments and bridge abutments. However, the way these simple stone products are being used is changing... Smiths Gabion stone is a crushed Cotswold limestone with its typical Cotswold hues, warm creams and honey appearance, which offers landscape designers a softer more natural appearance to any large engineering project where the stone is left exposed. Equally this can be used to enhance any smaller landscape/garden project. With the ability to supply a mixture of sizes in both stone and basket it has opened up a whole new creative use for this product. Landscape and garden designers are using these ‘architectural’ features in their new concepts. Other designs where our gabion stone has been used is when incorporating other ‘objects’ which may suit the surrounding environment - such as recycled coloured bottles. The simplest of ideas are usually the ones that work best. Another possibility is that just to face the basket with the Cotswold gabion stone and fill the remainder with a less expensive alternative. The photograph shows an example of the Smiths Cotswold gabion stone ‘facing’ a wired basket in a waterside landscape design. www.smithsbletchington.co.uk

KBB raises Pisa’s game with complementary colours
KBB, the specialist in replacement doors for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom cabinetry, has added three critical finishes to its Bellissimo Pisa range, to provide the perfect complement to the five woodgrains already offered. White, Cashmere and Cream are the new on-trend solid colours for Pisa’s slab door format. Pisa is made in the innovative new PVC-edged MFC with almost invisible laser edging. There is a developing preference for woodgrains combined with solid colours which tone with them rather than contrast strongly. The new solid colours in Bellissimo’s Pisa range allow contractors or home owners to achieve this contemporary two-tone look in an affordable and timely fashion (two to three days). The handle-less look is achieved with discreet J handles applied to the top of the door. Pisa is offered in bespoke sizes and a 300mm x 300mm curved door is available.

Benoy’s First From big screen MixC Mall Opens to big sleep Benoy, the global studio of Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is celebrating the opening of its first MixC Mall in the city of Qingdao, China. Benoy was appointed by China Resources Land (CRL) as the Interior Designer for the developer’s most significant retail scheme to date. Occupying an area of 450,000m2, Qingdao’s MixC Mall has been established as an exciting landmark in the country’s northeast. Integrated into the China Resources Centre, the wider mixed- use development is a prominent commercial addition for the city. The scheme is also a vital component of the City Crossing development, the major landmark building group in Qingdao. “We are proud to deliver CRL’s new flagship for their highend retail brand. As the sector continues to evolve, Benoy is excited to be at the forefront of designing the heart of these major mixed-use schemes. MixC Mall in Qingdao is a truly integrated experience which unites Retail and Entertainment for the city,” commented Craig Menzies, Director at Benoy. Covering seven levels and three underground levels, the retail-led podium has one of the most extensive programmes for shopping centres in the country; bringing together Retail, Food and Beverage, Entertainment, Education and Culture. The development features a roof garden and sunken plazas, an Olympic-standard ice skating rink, a dedicated children’s area and the first SEGA indoor theme park in China. Benoy’s Interior Design drew inspiration from Qingdao’s waterfront landscape with the interior spaces shaped by undulating, wave-like forms. The curved floor pattern, feature ceilings and main atrium have all embodied elements of the ocean to give striking focal points throughout the design. “Qingdao has been described as one of China’s most liveable cities and so our design aimed to connect visitors with the natural landscape. We celebrated the mall’s proximity to the outdoors through the use of natural stone, timbers, skylights and glass curtain walls,” explained Emily WS Wong, Benoy Senior Associate Director and Project Design Leader. Located in Qingdao’s well-established commercial centre, the scheme provides the benefits of being a Transit Oriented Development, with seamless connectivity to two metro lines. Attracted to the commercial advantages of the scheme’s location and wider integration, over 85% of the development’s retail units were rented by 2013, two years prior to the mall’s opening. MixC Malls are at the top of the CRL retail portfolio. The prestigious schemes are already operating in major cities such as Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Chongqing with Qingdao now the leading development of the series. developer-update.co.uk
Shepherds Bush Pavilion, a Grade II listed building, dating from 1923, was orginially constructed as a cinema. Now, it has been painstakingly restored by Flanagan Lawrence and has reopened as the Shepherds Bush Pavilion hotel. Designed by Frank Verity, it won the RIBA London Street Architecture Award for the best London façade. Heavily damaged during World War II, the building was poorly repaired, subsequently converted to a Bingo Hall in 1983 and closed its doors for good in 2001, remaining disused for much of the next decade. In 2009 planning permission was granted for conversion into a four-star, 320-room hotel with conference facilities, café, restaurant, bar, retail spaces and a roof-top spa. Drawing on the influence of Art Deco cinema design, the foyer and atrium spaces employ simple curved surfaces in alternating bands of black and gold. The internally illuminated spandrel panels also minimise sound reverberation. At ground floor level, dark- stained, ribbed timber panelling and heavy curtains serve a similar purpose. The honey-coloured limestone floor is inlaid with brass, in two simple decorative elements. In the main reception, brass strips form a series of concentric circles at the centre of the space, which are reflected in a ceiling coffer above, while in the atrium, the bands define the circulation route from the reception through to the atrium bar. The primary façades have been retained with modifications to bring natural light into the rooms behind. The building features a new glazed roof which follows the curved profile of the original, bringing daylight into the upper floors of the building. Additional insulation to the brick facades, high performance glazing, solar shading, improved air permeability and new energy- efficient plant all contribute to a significantly improved thermal performance. Jason Flanagan, Director, Flanagan Lawrence Architects commented “Our design has been informed by a detailed understanding of the building’s history and context. Our response complements and refines the original character of the building, protecting this important heritage asset, reactivating the streetscape and providing a new point of focal interest on Shepherds Bush Green.”

Extension to Gentofte School unveiled Kebony, the sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, presents their latest project, in collaboration with Arkitema Architects, at Gentofte School. The new addition to the school in Denmark creates a further 460m² of space, which can accommodate 100 children, spread across two floors. The extension houses three classrooms, a common room and a double height workshop as well as a large roof terrace. The designers, Arkitema Architects, worked in a close collaboration with the school’s management and teaching teams to ensure the space was practical and ergonomic for both the primary classes and the after school activities. The children at Gentofte school age from 5-9 years, as such the building has been completed with special features such as sliding walls that also function as writing boards and can be easily operated by the children. The new space can also be converted into either a single or double-height space and can be divided into compartments to host several classrooms dependent on the needs of the students and teachers.
The large south facing princess balconies will similarly afford further dynamic teaching methods by creating additional outdoor and recreational spaces.
The interior has also been constructed with the unique needs of the pupils in mind, resulting in an innovative range of uses. For example, it is possible to drive cars in through the double doors located at the entrance, rendering the building operational as an engineering workshop. Additional functions of the building are equally inventive, the double height space can serve as an orangery; in-keeping with the ecological theme of the build.
that the façade is totally maintenance free and will not be susceptible to damage through wear and weathering in the future. Consequently, the façade will soon be covered by a ‘vertical forest’ with a depth of up to 60cm and a wall of climbing plants which will eventually house birds and insects.
Sustainability was key to the design ethos, leading to the decision to clad the entire façade of the new extension, just under 400m², in Kebony wood. Produced using sustainably sourced species of soft wood which are impregnated with a non-chemical bio-based product and heated under pressure, Kebony is a highly durable and environmental product. The use of sustainable Kebony wood also means
Carsten Løppenthin Møller, Managing Director of Kebony Denmark, commented “Kebony are really pleased to have been selected for this project; the flexible and innovate design is an exemplar for new school facilities but this flexibility has not compromised on the beauty of the building. We look forward to seeing the Kebony develop its silver patina and blend with the new trees and climbing plants.”

tp bennett state of the art sports facility
Benoy has been recognised for its work on Chengdu IFS and iAPM, Shanghai, at the inaugural International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) China Awards this year.
One of the largest sports facilities to be developed in central London is now open; tp bennett was the architect and interior designer on CitySport, which offers sports facility for City University London. The project is part of a wider mixed-use regeneration scheme for the University.
Chengdu IFS and iAPM were both presented with the prestigious Gold Award for Design and Development (New Development) by the ICSC. Chengdu IFS is Benoy’s landmark development in western China. Conceived as a ‘City within a city’, the 760,000m2 integrated development is a world-class, onestop destination uniting Retail, Dining, Business, Leisure, Entertainment, Culture and Art. The 210,000m2 flagship retail podium is flanked by two premium Grade-A office towers, a five-star hotel and highend residential properties; delivering an innovative mixeduse scheme to the centre of the city.
Measuring 3,289 sq m (35,402 sq ft), CitySport is 80% larger than Saddlers Sports Centre, which it replaced, and incorporates a six -court, multi-purpose sports hall that is able to stage county standard badminton, basketball, indoor football, hockey, volleyball and netball events. tp bennett was originally appointed by City University London to complete a feasibility study and then worked together with developer Generation Estates to fully explore the site’s potential. At the time, it housed a redundant 1960s development, as well as Saddlers Sports Centre and two student residence blocks. developer-update.co.uk

Sealing your EWI system efficiently Peter Thompson, General Manager UK of ISO-Chemie, explains the best practice and products for sealing External Wall Insulation. Improving the thermal efficiency of buildings in the UK is an increasing trend, for both existing domestic and commercial properties and new build projects, utilising alternative construction methods. Much of this work is being carried out using an assortment of external wall insulation (EWI) systems, which has seen an explosion in demand and has led to a number of suppliers significantly increasing their installation teams. The minimum requirement of any EWI system is to add additional thermal insulation to the outside of the structure, then seal the insulation with a suitable weather tight finish to protect both the extra insulation layer as well as the underlying fabric. Different systems use different types of thermal insulation, but the one thing they all have in common is that the insulation must be kept dry. In my experience, it appears to be a little known fact that most insulation layers suffer significantly due to the addition of a very small amount of moisture. It is a general rule of thumb that a 5% ingress of moisture into this layer will reduce its thermal insulation capacity by 50%. This may be one of the factors behind the Zero Carbon Hub report, highlighting the difference between ‘As Designed’ and ‘As Built’ performance when EWI systems are used in new build properties. The potential factors mentioned in the report however are vast and varied.
As mentioned above, different EWI manufacturers and installers finish joints and intersections in different ways. Some will simply butt joint the insulation up to the termination area, such as a window, then cover this with a render type finish. However, there will be movement in the area where the two materials meet, as they each have different coefficients of movement. This will cause a crack where the water moisture can creep through into the insulation layer. Other installers recommend the EWI system is terminated using a stop bead, and the window, door or wall to be butt jointed up against it. However, the difference in surface levels between the stop bead and window, door or wall can result in small gaps for the weather to penetrate. Using advanced impregnated foam sealing tapes in these areas will ensure a weather tight seal. The tape will take up any construction tolerance between the materials and accommodate constant differential movement between the two components caused by the different coefficients of expansion.
The nature and structure of foam tapes also means additional thermal and acoustic insulation is an added benefit. If used in a simple butt joint of insulation The report tends to point the finger at both site installation against the existing construction element, sealant tapes practices and the need to use products that give guaranteed are best placed on the outer edge of the insulation on site performance. What this highlights is the importance of layer, between the two materials, and rendered over reliably sealing the insulation layer of any EWI system against the in the usual way. The optimal size of specialist sealing tapes used for EWI systems are those designated to fit a gap of between 2m and 6mm. It is also beneficial that tapes can be compressed further to 1 mm, giving a site tolerance of 5mm+. Optimal tape performance allows an expansion beyond the stated 6mm size, but as they do so, the level of weather resistance starts to reduce accordingly. developer-update.co.uk

IT’S ELECTRIC: THE HOME LIFT THAT IS REPLACING STAIRLIFTS The Stiltz Electric Home Lift is the ideal alternative to a stairlift for builders and architects working on a refurbishment project and who have a client looking for a product to assist them getting up the stairs. For decades, the stairlift has been the preferred choice for helping people who have conditions, such as arthritis, overcome the difficulty of climbing up and down stairs at home. But the Stiltz Electric Home Lift offers substantial benefits compared to a stairlift and is a surprisingly affordable option with minimal running costs. The Stiltz domestic lift is stylish and modern in design compared to the basic and dated appearance of a stairlift and provides a simpler, faster and more convenient way of getting between floors. Unlike a stairlift, a Stiltz home lift can comfortably carry two people and is useful for moving heavy objects such as luggage and boxes, up floors. A Stiltz lift takes up a remarkably small space and the aesthetics of the home do not need to be compromised leaving the stairs to be kept the same. In comparison, a stairlift can negatively impact the look of the staircase and obstruct the top or bottom floors. WATCH: STILTZ HOME LIFTS VIDEO Another substantial advantage of having a Stiltz domestic lift installed compared to a stairlift is that it can be fitted virtually anywhere in the home. There are no noisy hydraulics or vacuum systems, like conventional home lifts, as the lift is totally electric. This also means the Stiltz home lift is quieter than many stairlifts. The Stiltz lift simply plugs straight into the wall using a regular 13 amp power socket like any other household appliance, with a selfcontained electric motor housed out of sight at the top of lift. The Stiltz Electric Home Lift draws a maximum of three amps on ascent so is low on power consumption and very economical. There are also no requirements for load bearing walls as the lift is a self-supporting structure thanks to the Stiltz dual rail technology. Two parallel and vertical guides bear the load of the entire lift so no major structural alterations are required. The most common place for a Stiltz lift is travelling between a downstairs room such as a hallway or living room and arriving upstairs in a bedroom or the landing. But it can be fitted within the dead space of a turning staircase and it is spacious but compact enough to fit into a cupboard on both floors. It is also capable of allowing users to enter and exit from both sides of the lift on different floors. The Stiltz Electric Lift is compliant with all European standards and assembled in the UK. Standard features include a battery back-up in case of a power cut, obstruction sensors and a key lock to stop unauthorised use. The roof of the lift is covered with the original floor so when it is downstairs it does not intrude upstairs. Other features include seats, grab bars, LED down lights and a remote control to call the lift from any floor. For more information about the Stiltz Lifts range, contact Stiltz Lifts on 0844 870 9087, email info@stiltz.co.uk or visit www.stiltz.co.uk – quoting Refurb and Developer Magazine.

New Video Highlights How to Reduce Energy in Your Building
A new video from Mitsubishi Electric shows how the company took its head office from an ‘E’ to a ‘B’ energy rating and offers advice on how other companies can do the same. With tough legislation focusing attention on energy use in the built environment, how we heat, cool and ventilate our buildings is coming under scrutiny as never before. “We’ve been on an eight year journey and one of the things we are saying in this video is that any business could and should be planning to improve the performance of their building”, explains Russell Jones who hosts the video. “Just like any other company we have had to make a strong business case for each new piece of equipment, but the fact that we have improved so much and have significantly reduced running costs shows the advantages that can be gained”. The video can be viewed on the company’s dedicated YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/mitsubishielectric2

ICONIC HEAL’S BUILDING KITTED OUT WITH PANASONIC HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM space was limited. The ECOi VRF system also puts energy efficiency at the forefront, operating with a COP of 4.63, while able to offer heating and cooling simultaneously at high performance, making it the perfect solution for a large office building with hundreds of staff.
The Heal’s Building on London’s Tottenham Court Road has long been a home of innovation and high quality design. This creative spirit lives on in the newly refurbished building, with a cutting edge heating and cooling system from Panasonic, that provides a comfortable environment for the staff of companies such as Netflix and Deliveroo. Consultants Cundall worked with Easy Air Conditioning to design and install a heating and cooling system flexible enough to meet the demands of a variety of office spaces spread over five storeys. The scale of the project demanded a powerful, efficient system, so Easy Air Conditioning and Cundall specified the Panasonic ECOi VRF system. During three phases of delivery, Easy Air Conditioning supplied 24 VRF systems comprised of 42 of Panasonic’s heat pumps and heat condensing units. Each VRF system is controlled by a Panasonic CZ-256ESMC2 touchscreen controller and is integrated into the building management system of the site, to provide a flexible and user-friendly heating and cooling solution. “When we worked out the scale of the project and how many units we would have to install, Panasonic’s VRF system became the obvious choice,” said Andy Wootton of Easy Air Conditioning. “We wanted to give the client a heating and cooling system that was easy to use and provided the capacity they needed, and Panasonic ticked all the boxes. They offer great products which are easy to install and very energy efficient.” Panasonic heat pumps and condensing units lead the market in their ease of installation and maintenance, which were key factors on this project, as the units were to be installed on the roof of the building where
The ceilings in the Heal’s Building are lower than one might typically find in a modern office building, due to its heritage as a furniture manufacturing facility. Easy Air Conditioning installed Panasonic’s MM range of horizontal ‘slimline’ ceiling-mounted units, designed for spaces with low ceilings. They were unable to fit a false ceiling around the units because of the lack of space, which meant that the cold air from the units would flow straight down onto the people who worked below them, causing pockets of cold air around the office. Easy Air Conditioning installed large plates around the outputs of the units to take advantage of the Coanda effect, where the air flows out horizontally along the bottom of the plates, so it doesn’t fall straight out of the unit onto the people below, providing a consistent cooling effect across the office. Easy Air Conditioning also took advantage of the off coil temperature control facility of the Panasonic units to maintain the off coil temperature at 12 degrees, so that the air that was emitted from the units was already slightly warmer than a regular cooling system. Easy Air Conditioning supplemented the ceiling-mounted units with a large number of Panasonic’s MR1 series floor standing units concealed discreetly in cabinets beneath windows. These units, specifically designed to be concealed in perimeter enclosures, enable flexible installation as supply pipes can be connected to either side of the unit from the bottom or the rear. This flexibility ensured that areas of offices nearer the windows, which can be warmer in the summer due to the sun, were cooled to a temperature consistent with the rest of the office. Without a false ceiling, the units, trunking and pipes of the air conditioning system were exposed, so the interior designers decided to embrace this and incorporate it into the stripped back, industrial-chic design aesthetic of the iconic Heal’s Building .

SPEEDHEAT RISES TO CHILLY If you think it’s starting to turn chilly here, spare a thought for those living and working on a scientific research base in the freezing Antarctic! Keeping warm in temperatures that can plunge to -50oC in the long, dark winters is not a choice for the team on the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) IV research station. It’s a matter of survival. But as the Antarctic summer begins when temperatures can rise to a positively balmy -5oC, the opportunity is being taken to install extra comfort, thanks to the ingenuity of electrical underfloor heating specialist, Speedheat. The base is on Vesleskarvet (Norwegian for little barren mountain) on the Ahlmann Ridge, about 100 miles from the coast. Its three modules are on stilts to keep them clear of the deep snows of an Antarctic winter. The electricity supply is powered by diesel generators, and
any waste heat from these goes into heat exchangers to provide most of the warmth to the inside of the modules. But this method of heating is difficult to control so, as part of a renovation project, Speedheat’s advanced floor heating system has been chosen to provide supplementary, thermostatically-controlled warmth in two of the two-storey modules. The third houses a helicopter and the generators and does not require additional heating. Different wattage mats of Speedheat’s unique cabling have been specifically designed for the different final floorings chosen for the base, such as bamboo laminate, vinyl and tiles. Speedheat has given full installation and commissioning training to the contractors in Cape Town who are laying flooring for SANAE IV. Contractors, flooring and the entire heating system are now on their way by ship and the fitters will return towards the end of February 2016. This is not the first extreme Speedheat installation. The company has quite literally gone to the both ends of the world from North to South as it has also been selected to supply floor heating for crew accommodation on Statoil Norway’s Aasta Hansteen gas rig in the deep waters of the Norwegian Sea. At just 1.5mm deep and with no major installation upheaval, the system has also been the choice for historic buildings in the UK, such as the extraordinary Durlston Castle in Dorset, new builds, sensitive conversions and for

CHALLENGE a home with a solar energy supply. It is equally comfortable in a conservatory, a single cold spot or as the primary heating for an entire building. Said Joan Pentland, managing director of Speedheat UK: “We have always known that every installation is different and that Speedheat floor heating can be designed to suit any space. The SANAE IV contract, awarded through our South African base, proves it. “It is a remarkable project that demonstrates the versatility and adaptability of the system, whether for a British home, in a castle, for a hotel or offices, a rig out at sea or in one of the coldest places on earth.”

Timeguard’s new carriage lanterns provides the same instant on brightness that users have become used to with halogen and incandescent lights in the past, and prefer for automatic outdoor lighting. It is fit-and forget, in black or white and with a choice of basic courtesy lights or ones with integral PIR detectors. IP44 weatherproof protection is a given, and there’s even a 4W LED candle lamp included in the box. Of course, when Timeguard says fit and forget, it means it: with a rare 3 year guarantee you have all the assurance of quality and reliability you need.
Take control of your LED installations Timeguard’s latest PIR lighting controller provides all the power you need to manage LED lighting systems. It is rated to switch LED lighting and will manage up to a pretty impressive 140W and is also suitable for 500W fluorescent or up to 2300W halogen incandescent lighting. These stylish new detectors feature a 12m detection range with a wide 180o detection field, adjustable light on times from 5 seconds to 15 minutes and light level adjustment that enables installers to set it up to trigger switching at exactly the right light level in any location. With IP55 rating and a rare 3 year guarantee of quality, it really is specified to be the workhorse PIR controller of choice. Find out more at www.timeguard.com

The manufacturing process at Chantelle
Exquisite lighting to colour your home Chantelle Lighting is shaping the industry in terms of creating and manufacturing stunning bespoke lighting products. The company was born some two and a half decades ago, as Anthony Holly, managing director, focused on a vision to offer a personal service from inception, through to implementation and completion. Chantelle Lighting is approached regularly with requests for the relatively straightforward, to the weird and wonderful and every project undertaken is done so with commitment, creativity and a desire to produce the very best product for every customer. Manufacturing bespoke products from its home in Lancashire is at the forefront of the business; an eclectic mix of materials make up the Aladdin’s Cave that is Chantelle Lighting’s workshop. Finely cut glass crystals, antique jars and jewels from around the world nestle closely against rustic restored cart wheels such is the mix of wants and needs. It appears that the mix of traditional ironmongery and modern works well, with Chantelle boasting a number of its own ranges, including the Sulphur and Lumiere, which emphasise this combination. The factory floor is a wealth of creative knowledge, boasting craftsmen and artisans, who understand exactly how to create high end, innovative products for customers. Chantelle is regularly approached by homeowners to design and deliver high end products such as beautiful, mesmerising chandeliers. A recent project was undertaken with Liverpool football player Jamie Carragher and his wife Nicola, who were looking to refresh the interior design of their home. Chantelle created a 12ft draping chandelier made up of some 50,000 crystals to create a dramatic focal point in the sweeping staircase. Alongside the show-stopping chandeliers, Chantelle has created a number of ranges which are perfect for domestic use, complementing any bespoke piece perfectly. Ranges such as Industrial and Manor work really well in the home, adding to the interior and décor of a property. And when you are responsible for the creation of sculptures and ranges of such magnitude and beauty, it’s no wonder that the company wants to share them. Anthony said: “At Chantelle, we create some breathtaking pieces of art; we want people to enjoy them, •16• be inspired and share them.”

With over 40 Years experience Novellini is the European and a World leader in the production and manufacture of Shower enclosures and trays, Baths, Whirlpools, Steam Enclosures and Wetroom solutions. In the last decade Novellini has made significant investments into environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and continues to strive towards ever more sustainable holistic production and distribution methods for the future.
Over the years Novellini has continually developed shower trays, being one of the first companies to offer fully engineered large format shower trays in a number of sizes and colours as either low profile or more conventional raised with legs trays - all from UK stock.
With the Olympic Plus shower tray - Novellini was one of the first manufacturers of large format shower trays to reintroduce the production of textured shower floor surfaces. For many years the Olympic shower tray by Novellini has been the only slip resistant (non- enamelled) product in the European bathroom market.
Novellini realised the importance of a more engineered shower tray from an early stage and pioneered the use of innovative materials and fabrication methods in the Olympic Plus shower tray, which today is still one of the strongest and most stable large format shower trays. The Metal reinforced composite construction, now also used in the new Custom tray, means that (unlike many low profile resin stone products), Novellini trays arrive On-site Flat and ready to install.
In recent years Novellini has developed the UK’s leading Wetroom and tanking product, with solutions to suit both timber and concrete installations. The Novellini Wetroom systems allow designers to create uncluttered, lowmaintenance, spacious, level access & fully tiled shower spaces

IN OR ON THE FLOOR –The Novellini Custom Tray can be installed on the floor as a low level conventional shower tray or placed directly onto joists to achieve a flush level-access solution without the need for any further fixing frames. (in addition a raised tray with a void for plumbing including legs is available for surface plumbing)
UK STOCK COLOURS AND SIZES – The Novellini Custom Tray is available in White, Grey, Black & Beige from UK Stock and there are 18 basic sizes – in addition each Custom Tray can be adjusted in Length by up to 200mm offering many more sizes than the basic 18.
ANTI-SLIP – The Novellini Custom Tray is available with an optional Factory applied genuine European standard, Certificated, Anti-slip which is applied to the top surface of the tray - leaving a 10cm Border around the edge so that any Silicone beading is applied to an easily cleaned gloss surface. EASY 2 CLEAN – The Novellini Custom tray IS easy to clean! The
materials used for the Custom shower tray are designed to be cleaned by conventional household bathroom cleaning products, including lime-scale cleaners and bleach. (The Anti-slip is a rough surface and will potentially hold grime and lime-scale – chemical cleaners will be required and unlike enamelled steel surfaces the materials used for the Custom Tray are not adversely affected.)
HIGH FLOW SHOWER WASTE – The Novellini Custom Tray has a specially designed shallow trap waste with a 50 litre/min flow rate. The Waste cover is completely flush with the surface of the shower tray, is easily removed for cleaning and is made from high grade stainless steel which, unlike a chromed waste cover, will not discolour or peel if in contact with bleach or lime-scale cleaning products. ROBUST – Novellini shower trays are built to last. Olympic and Custom
shower trays arrive On-site in their own individual secure packaging which protects them from most handling accidents, avoiding chips and knocks, (a fairly common problem with enamelled steel products). The composite steel reinforced construction ensures that the trays arrive flat and ready to install; they are not subject to the warping, (which is quite likely with low profile resin-cast products).
CUT TO SHAPE – 200mm of one end of the Novellini Custom shower tray is designed so that if required the Custom tray can be cut to fit around a Soil Pipe Boxing for instance or perhaps an Out of True wall?.....

Bathrooms & Kitchens 35 Granite Transformations’ Chief Operating Officer, Danny Hanlon, having taken up an equivalent post in the Group’s North American operation, General Manager, Hayley Fenn now assumes day-to-day responsibility for running the UK and Ireland retail franchise, renowned for its high quality kitchen and bathroom makeovers. She will manage the head office team, oversee business growth across the showroom network and provide franchise owners with effective marketing, technical and operational support. She is one of a growing number of women engaged in senior management and ownership roles within the UK franchise industry, far above the average proportion in other sectors. Rather more unusual in having a key executive position with the main franchisor, Hayley (41) lives in Tunbridge Wells, near to the company’s UK headquarters in Decimus Park. She joined the franchisor, RSG Europe, more than ten years ago and was latterly promoted to Financial Controller, before becoming General Manager, having previously worked for AXA PPP Healthcare as a Subscriptions & Claims Supervisor. She holds a National Diploma in Business & Finance and has completed the foundation level of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) professional qualification, equipping her well for the exacting financial aspect of her role. As General Manager, Hayley will be pushing for year-on-year Granite Transformations network growth, keeping abreast of interior design market trends and franchise owner requirements, and ensuring the right staff are in place to support the expanding business. A key project will be implementing a major network rebranding programme, which will see the transition to a new Trend Transformations brand identity and an even more diverse product portfolio, in addition to its unique core offering ‘the top that fits on top’. “I enjoy the challenges of running a successful franchise network and becoming a leading brand in the home improvements sector,” says Hayley. “No two days are ever the same in this business, making my job diverse and interesting. This year we shall be focusing on our rebrand and supporting our pilot franchise showrooms through the transition programme, making it one of the most exciting periods in our corporate history.” Fittingly, for the head of a leading name in home makeovers, Hayley has already remodelled four different houses, enabling her to move up the property ladder, and she is always on the lookout for another new project. One of her latest installations was an Italian glass mosaic feature wall in the family kitchen-diner, using an exclusive design from the parent company’s Trend tile collection, which forms part of the extended product portfolio. “I love the ability to refresh and revitalise the look of your home, without having to move, enabling you to explore new décor trends and personalise the living environment to suit your family and lifestyle,” she comments. “That’s exactly what we offer to our customers, without the usual debris, dust and disruption, and having our parent company as our manufacturer and supplier means that our showrooms are always at the cutting edge of interior finishes.” Hayley Fenn and her husband Nick have two children, Willem (6) and Isaac (4), and Nick is regularly involved in the social side of the business, attending franchise conferences, awards dinners and other occasions. STELRAD RA STUNNING NEW B Some housebuilders are realising that using quality radiators enhances their homes – they don’t simply heat them. level of warmth and comfort needed to make these new homes perfect for their new owners. “The guys from Stelrad were able to show us that these radiators were more than adequate for these impressive new homes and the first new owners and we as a company are delighted with them,” says Peter Barsby, Environmental Manager with Jones Homes. “The Caliente’s in particular have already got plenty of fans on the development and we’ll be specifying them on other new developments later this year and into 2016. They are a real find for us.”
And some enlightened new homes builders – like Jones Homes based in Alderley Edge in Cheshire – even respond to the fact that radiators can work extremely well with renewable heating systems – in this case air source heat pumps. The development – The Willows at Tilston, a stone’s throw from Malpas – is literally at the end of a rural road surrounded by farmland with idyllic views in every direction. So no surprise that there is no mains gas available for heating these excellent homes. The options of LPG and oil were considered and dismissed in favour of the use of quality air source heat pumps from manufacturer Glow worm. Underfloor heating was chosen for the ground floor of these exceptional four and five bedroomed homes and a selection of Stelrad radiators were chosen for the upstairs rooms – including Stelrad’s latest high efficiency Caliente towel radiators for the bathrooms and en-suites in each home. Originally the designers had selected towel rails and a separate radiator for the bathrooms, but the new Stelrad Caliente designer towel rail is perfect for warming towels and heating bathrooms from lower temperature heating systems all on their own, without additional help – and they look just wonderful. In the bedrooms and the upstairs landing area, a mix of two panel P2 and three panel K3 Stelrad Compact radiators keep the home cosy and warm in the colder months – sized correctly these are more than able to provide the developer-update.co.uk
The new development has already proved to be a magnet for older couples looking to ‘trade down’ to smaller homes but still wanting several bedrooms so their family can come home to stay. The use of renewable heating options has been a big draw too for people wanting to do their bit to help the environment. And the mix of underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs has proved to be a winner with potential buyers: “Very few people are willing to risk underfloor heating upstairs, so radiators play an important part in the heating of our homes,” says Peter Barsby. “And with radiators looking as good as they do these days, they are actually a feature in our homes rather than just a functional means of heating the property. The Calientes in particular are stunning additions and are very much a selling feature of the wet rooms, bathrooms and en-suites in our homes.” For more information on Stelrad radiator range visit www.stelrad.com and to see more about the homes available from Jones Homes visit www.jones-homes.co.uk

Langley Waterproofing Systems top of the class for London school National roofing and waterproofing experts, Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd, has helped London’s largest high school, and third largest in the UK, Kingsbury High School, refurbish its roof ensuring it meets the highest standards. Kingsbury High School approached specialist consultants, Capital Property and Construction Consultants (Capital PCC), to refurbish its facilities and help provide greater efficiency and all-weather proof systems within its buildings. Capital PCC called upon Langley to carry out a complete survey of the school’s existing 9,000m² roof system. Langley compiled an in-depth report document detailing the findings and made recommendations for improvement works. The report allowed Langley to identify solutions to ensure the school was compliant with building regulations, and highlighted complications with the schools current roof drainage system which required a full redesign of each roof area.
and Princes Lane – Langley worked closely with Capital PCC and Langley approved contractors, Breyer Roofing to complete the first phase of the project on the Bacon Lane premise – an area totalling 6,000m². The roof’s unusual architectural design, which included a central block with two curved wings coming forward, meant that every roof had to be individually designed due to the variation between the different roofs and drainage issues each roof presented.
Problems with the existing roof included ineffective insulation, defects in asphalt surfaces and cracks and interlayer blistering. Evidence of a long history of waterproofing issues was also found across the roofs due Langley’s technical team were on to issues with the drainage system and hand to deliver support and advice drainage patterns of the roof which throughout the project, including caused flooding during heavy rainfall. weekly site monitoring and regular Split into two areas – Bacon Lane meetings, resulting in a roof that has
enabled the school to retain more heat, thanks to improved insulation. Luke Vivian, Chartered Surveyor and Associate of Capital PCC, said: “When the project was brought to our attention, we contacted Langley as we knew we could depend on their guidance and technical assistance. Langley were able to calculate the best solutions thanks to the survey they carried out, which included detailed design of the tapered insulation to the flat roofing. “The technical after-sales support Langley provided, which includes inspections and roof guarantees, ensured that the project ran smoothly. We are pleased with how the project has been delivered and we have also received fantastic feedback from the school.” With the first phase of the project complete, work on the second phase could finish by October 2015, if the school’s application for funding is successful. Tim Gardner, Area Manager at Langley, said: “This was a challenging project to be involved in due to the size and scale of the existing roofs and the timeframes given by the school. “After working closely with both Capital PCC and Breyer Roofing, we are delighted with the ongoing results. The feedback we have received from the school has been excellent and we’re now looking forward to completing the project once the second phase can commence.” For more information on Langley’s extensive range of roofing solutions please visit www.langley.co.uk

BIM OBJECTS FOR NATURAL SLATES AND FAÇADE PRODUCTS NOW AVAILABLE FROM CEMBRIT Leading roofing and cladding manufacturer, Cembrit, has introduced the first BIM (Building Information Modelling) objects in the UK for natural slates. At the same time, the company has introduced BIM objects for some of its cladding range. Designed to help estate managers, public bodies and specifiers utilise Cembrit products in their designs, this new service is the first part of a multi-stage process that will see the whole Cembrit product portfolio available as BIM objects. BIM is used by architects, main contractors and other specifiers in the planning and design phase of projects
to create digital representations of buildings, together with detailed technical information, accreditations and other background data to create an information rich specification. Manufacturers, including Cembrit, have developed BIM-compatible models of their products for integration into such designs and plans. At present, Cembrit’s top quality Glendyne and Alpina ranges of natural slates as well as popular Cembonit, Metro, Zenit and True ranges of rainscreen cladding boards are now available as BIM objects. “We are trying to facilitate the use of natural slates for publicly funded contracts and are pleased to be leading the natural slate industry in promoting this traditional yet sustainable material,” says Ged Ferris,
Marketing Manager at Cembrit. “With the creation of our BIM façade objects we are providing a choice for those involved with fibre cement rainscreen cladding specifications. I urge anyone interested in BIM to click on the links on our homepage” Cembrit’s BIM objects for natural slate and façades contain detailed dimensions, product specifications and other key details, along with high quality 3D images to add into virtual model and simulated building designs. Compatible with both, Revit and IFC software versions, Cembrit’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects are hosted on the NBS National BIM Library and are available to be downloaded to integrate it into any BIM software.

It takes a long time to create perfection.
Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.
