04 Industry News & Shows Nash Baker Architects combines brick base and gabled timber top for Broad Street House
Grant UK upgrades oil-fired combi Grant UK’s Vortex Pro oil-fired combi now includes a 24 litre expansion vessel as standard, a safeguard designed to provide expansion capacity for both the boiler and the heating system. The company says it regularly consults installers regarding improvements that they would like to see made to products, and a larger factory fitted expansion vessel for the combi was high on the list.
A timber box with a pitched roof sits atop the handmade-brick ground floor of this house in the English village of Orford by London studio Nash Baker Architects (+ slideshow). Broad Street House was designed by Nash Baker Architects for a site on a quiet street in the village, which is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the Suffolk coastline. The clients – a baker and a silversmith – required a four-bedroom house with two rooms on the ground floor that could be used to accommodate their respective work spaces. An existing 1980s house on the site was removed to make way for the new building, which sits within the same envelope and is designed to complement the local architecture. “We wanted to ensure that the architectural expression would be contemporary and of its time, whilst in its materiality being reflective of local vernacular traditions,” architect and studio director Howard Nash told Dezeen. “For this reason the building uses local handmade bricks to create a solid, plinthlike ground storey with a strong horizontal emphasis, above which sits an altogether lighter weathered-oak box.” Handmade bricks are becoming popular with architects for their variations of colour and texture. Other examples include an asymmetric house in Belgium and a canalside development in London. As the area around Broad Street House is prone to tidal flooding, the original ground floor level was raised using a concrete beam and block floor. Traditional cavity walls form the ground floor, while the first floor features a concrete slab supporting a timber-framed structure. developer-update.co.uk
Photo of Grant Vortex Pro Combi Internal 31“By upgrading to a 24 litre expansion vessel, the boilers will ultimately save on installation time and costs because, in most cases, no additional external vessel will be required. For the majority of installations, 24 litres will provide more than sufficient room for the expansion from both the boiler and heating system,” the company explained. The Vortex Combi range includes internal and external models available in output of 21 kW, 26 kW and 36 kW. The latest Combi XS 26kW boiler is 515 mm wide and claimed to be the slimmest model of its kind on the market. The 24 litre expansion vessel is normally fitted behind the front door on indoor and outdoor Vortex Pro combi boilers, but with the XS, it is supplied as an externally fitted kit.
RIBA Names Its 2015 House of the Year In its 14th year running, The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has issued its House of the Year Award. The 2015 winner is the Flint House, located on Waddesdon Manor in southeast England. Designed by Londonbased firm Skene Catling De La Peña, the construction consists of two parts: The site accommodates a primary residence and a smaller, detached structure that was designed to be an asymmetrical version of the main building. Both are triangular in form and are oriented north to south. From a distance, the constructions’ sharp angles make them appear as if they are jutting out of the earth, echoing the surrounding hilly landscape. Their gradual roof incline is supported by a base of locally sourced materials, with larger portions of flint embedded in black lime mortar at the base of the structure, gradually transitioning from black to gray and then to white; a final layer of the soft, porous chalk tops off the wall. The project team sourced these natural materials fromthe lush fields on
site, which the Rothschilds, a prominent English banking family, has owned since 1847. The angled incline is characterized by a set of stairs that create a ridged, horizontal edge. Glass and metal form the unassuming rectangular windows inset in the sedimentary façade. Three interruptions punctuate the site. The first is a road, which circles the property and abruptly cuts into the lowest-habitable portion of the larger of the two buildings. The second is a small stream that flows beneath the larger building between the study and sitting room. Finally, a garden links the sitting room to the outdoors by rising and folding to form a makeshift bench.

Herz introduces new dual fuel biomass boiler Herz Biomass UK has launched a new flexible, dual-fuel boiler for the domestic and light commercial sector. The new Herz Pelletfire boiler is able to burn both logs and wood pellets and is MCS approved. Designed to provide a space efficient solution, the compact Pelletfire range of boilers come in a range of output options from 20 kW to 40 kW and offer flexible heating with separate combustion chambers. The two fuels can be switched between easily and the operation can be set up to automatically transition to wood pellets if all logs are burnt out. The Pelletfire is compatible with various types of pellet stores, including the traditional V profile and modular pellet silos. It also incorporates the modern T-CONTROL touch system, to make operation of the boiler simple and user-friendly. In addition, the Pelletfire range features a double vortex combustion chamber, which is designed to assist maximum efficiency in the combustion
process. The smooth running of the boiler is also helped by the Lambda probe control and automatic cleaning capabilities of the heat exchanger and combustion grate, ensuring the cleaner combustion and maximum heat transfer. The Pelletfire is also available in a ‘log only’ version with a pellet flange, which has the ability to be paired with the wood pellet system at a later date. The filling shaft for the log boiler can accommodate logs of up to 50 cm in length, guaranteeing a long burning time. Tremeyne Woodley, technical sales manager for Herz Biomass UK commented: “Available to order through our partner network the Herz Pelletfire boiler offers true flexibility to users and will revolutionise the
Developer ordered to tear down £10m block of flats
A private developer has been told to cough up £700,000 and tear down a six-storey block of flats in London, built without planning permission. Hackney Council said the record planning crime fine recouped rent paid by tenants on the 34 Hoxton flats. Garland Development and the firm’s sole director Yusuf Sarodia were sentenced in November this year for the offence of failing to demolish the property, after the council served an enforcement notice in August 2011. As part of the case, the council made an application to the court to confiscate money illegally made from the building under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The council will receive one third of the fine with the other two thirds split between the court and the Treasury. Money received by the council will be reinvested back into the services that brought the developer to justice. At present, 62-year-old Sarodia has still to demolish the property, which is worth an estimated £10m.
The council today said it would seek further enforcement if action was not taken. Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Hackney Council, said: “Anyone who thinks they have a right to build a property in Hackney without first obtaining planning permission must realise that the council will take action against those who flout the rules. “Putting up a building without planning permission is not only breaching planning law but to be quite frank puts at risk the safety of residents and neighbouring properties.”
lower duty end of the market. The Herz brand is well known for its quality and this new boiler is no different, having gone through rigorous testing and development I am confident that it will deliver outstanding results year on year in the field.”

Plans submitted for London Paddington regeneration Great Western Developments and its development partner Sellar Property Group have announced the formal submission of a planning application for the redevelopment of the former Royal Mail sorting office at 31 London Street, situated adjacent to Paddington Station. The proposed development, known as Paddington Place, has been designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and plans to dramatically transform this part of London. The centrepiece will be a new landmark for London, a crystal light-reflecting tower set to become a major marker for Paddington, one of London’s most important transport hubs. It will include a sky garden and restaurant, featuring mature trees and plants in the open-air. The ramp that serves as Paddington Station’s entrance will be removed and the whole area in front of the station opened up. There will be the opportunity to extend the station concourse into generous new public open space. The piazza will improve connectivity and establish a new ‘front door’ for the station. To improve the rail passenger experience, a new and enlarged Bakerloo Line ticket hall (approximately four times larger than at present) will be created and illuminated by natural light from vaulted glass ceilings. Connectivity to the Circle/District and Bakerloo Line platforms will be enhanced, reached from a new point of access/egress, and will ease congestion from the entrance’s present, cramped location. As part of the reconfiguration, London Street will be realigned and augmented by an elegant suspension bridge. The entire scheme has been designed to provide enhanced linkages into the St Mary’s Hospital estate. The end of 2018 will see the opening of Crossrail, together with upgrades to stations, platforms, signalling and trains serving the M4 corridor to Wales and South West England – all of which aim to address the vast increase in passenger footfall through Paddington, which is predicted
to rise to over 60 million per year by 2031. Following this 50% increase from today’s passenger numbers, the area needs to be revitalised if its built environment is to appropriately reflect the significance of this key gateway, and to adequately support Paddington Station’s developing importance to London. There will also be 100,000 ft² of office space, with floorplates specifically designed to accommodate small to medium sized high-growth industries. This development will be further enhanced by 50,000 ft² of high-quality retail and leisure space at Praed Street, rail concourse and tube station levels, which will breathe new life into the area. Chris Lim, group executive director of Hotel Properties, commented: “This is a unique opportunity involving an investment of over £1bn to provide many public benefits and a scheme which we believe will drive further investment in the wider area.” Irvine Sellar, chairman of Sellar Property Group, commented: “This exciting transformational development will enhance this important part of central London. Paddington’s transport interchange will be fit for purpose for the 21st Century and the wider mixed-use development and public space will enhance the way residents, visitors, businesses and their people live work and play, and will make a major contribution in revitalising this district.”
Reside At Canary Wharf Canary Wharf Group’s first ever homes will go on sale in July as part of the first wave of residential development on the Canary Wharf Estate. The residences form part of Canary Wharf’s new phase to the east of the existing Estate which will comprise 3,200 new homes, a quarter of which will be affordable, plus offices, shops, a school and doctor’s surgery. There will also be capacity to build a further 400 new homes in the future. 10 Park Drive is a unique tower designed by architects Stanton Williams and Make Architects. The design makes the most of the uninterrupted views to the south, east and west including the O2, public parks and gardens on the water’s edge, and includes 74 studios, 115 onedeveloper-update.co.uk
bedroom apartments, 141 two-bedroom apartments and 15 three-bedroom apartments. Stirling Prize winning architectural practice Stanton Williams has designed a mid-rise 13 storey element which adjoins a 42 storey tower incorporating 345 individual residential units with interiors designed by award winning firm, Make Architects. All of the residential properties will be built to the highest design standards with every intricate detail considered, planned and designed accordingly. The new mixed-use development is located on a 13 hectare site adjacent to the existing buildings that form the globally recognised Canary Wharf skyline.

Government review to evaluate housebuilding ‘red tape’ Housebuilders will have their say on what they consider to be the barriers to the construction of new homes, in a new ‘Cutting Red Tape’ review launched today by the Government. Building on the work of the Housing Implementation Task Force, this review will aim to uncover the issues that have the biggest effect on housebuilders and seek the views of smaller firms to understand the unique pressures they face. The wide-ranging review will capture the experiences of all those involved in building homes, including developers, planners and trade associations. Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said: “We are determined to remove barriers faced by housebuilders to ensure we continue to keep Britain building as quickly and safely as possible. “We want to hear the views of firms big and small so we can remove unnecessary red tape and help housebuilders do what they do best, building the homes we need.” The key starting points for the review are based on the priorities raised by the Task Force: The government is also keen to look at
the changes made to the Construction, Design and Management Regulations, as well as any examples of EU rules that are being implemented too strictly. The new Cutting Red Tape review will look at the way the law is enforced, as well as whether the rules themselves are proportionate and fit for purpose. The responses from housebuilders will lead to government taking concrete steps to remove burdens on business. Stewart Baseley, executive chairman of the Home Builders Federation, said: “As the industry looks to drive further increases in housing supply we welcome moves to reduce unnecessary
regulation and the associated costs. Aside from the planning system there are significant other regulatory processes and charges levied on the industry that can adversely affect viability, but also, critically, delay the ability of home builders to get on site and start building. Reducing red tape will bring more sites into play more quickly and so help the industry deliver more desperately needed homes in the coming years.” The evidence gathering phase of review will run for 8 weeks and close on 13 January 2016. Willmott Dixon wins £27m Alexandra Palace Restoration The restoration of London’s iconic Alexandra Palace took a leap forward this week as Willmott Dixon secured the job to overhaul the East Wing. Designed by architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the go-ahead for the project marks the culmination of years of planning and months of negotiations to secure Lottery and Haringey Council funding. Willmott Dixon’s initial works include protecting the East Wing’s historic features, stripping out dilapidated modern fittings and removing asbestos. It will restore Britain’s first-ever broadcasting TV studio, presently lying hidden and derelict, bring the Victorian Theatre back to life and restore the glazed East Court entrance hall to recreate the sense of its original 1870s grandeur. “Almost half of Alexandra Palace is still inaccessible to the public. This project will help put that right,” said Louise Stewart, Chief Executive of Alexandra Park and Palace. “When we’re finished, Alexandra Palace’s eclectic history will finally come alive.” developer-update.co.uk

Industry News & Shows 09 Grimsby institute gets an artistic perforated facade from RMIG A new £6 million art and design centre at the Grimsby Institute has been given an eye-catching perforated metal façade by RMIG as part of a major refurbishment and extension scheme designed by Ryder Architects. Part of the redevelopment was to re-clad the exterior of the new theatre on the North elevation to reflect the artistic design and performance studies that take place within the new building. This resulted in Ryder Architecture
working closely with one of the Grimsby Institute’s art tutors to create a three-dimensional design involving a series of overlapping and intersecting cubes. RMIG manufactured the cladding panels from 3mm thick J57S grade aluminium and produced the detailed pattern using a complex array of circular perforations to create the 3D shading effect within the artist’s original design. Once complete, every panel was anodised to give a nonreflective finish that helped show the design more clearly while also providing a protective finish to the facade.
A new home for historical documents RMIG has extensive experience in providing unique cladding solutions for buildings around the world, making it possible for them to deliver exactly
what is needed. The architects chose perforated and embossed panels in 2.0 mm powder coated aluminium from the RMIG City Emotion programme for both the interior and exterior of the building, forming a strong, functional and stylish design statement. The interior is elegantly decorated with stylish panels in white. The exterior is very distinctive in appearance as the architects chose the cube as the mode of expression. The cube-shaped building measures an impressive 31 x 31 x 15 metres and the colour and appearance of the outer panels
Perforated sheets from RMIG depict a new Golden age for Bang & Olufsen Precision perforated panels from RMIG have helped to create a unique, showstopping facade for Bang & Olufsen’s (B&O) new flagship store in Herning, Denmark. This new building reflects the audio-visual giant’s new design concept for its stores. B&O is renowned around the world for its high quality product design and technological excellence. When embarking on the project of creating a new flagship store, the primary objective was to ensure that the building’s exterior reflects the brand’s reputation for high-style and is as arresting in design and appearance as the store’s interior. The striking flagship store was designed by Arkitec as who, through RMIG’s City Emotion programme, chose perforated TECU® Gold panels for the building’s facade to cover approximately 350 m². Using RMIG ImagePerf, each bespoke panel has its own specially designed perforation pattern, which when assembled, runs across the whole envelope of the building creating an unusual and fascinating design that resembles entangled snakes.

ICONIC HEAL’S BUILDING KITTED OUT WITH PANASONIC HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM The Heal’s Building on London’s Tottenham Court Road has long been a home of innovation and high quality design. This creative spirit lives on in the newly refurbished building, with a cutting edge heating and cooling system from Panasonic, that provides a comfortable environment for the staff of companies such as Netflix and Deliveroo. Consultants Cundall worked with Easy Air Conditioning to design and install a heating and cooling system flexible enough to meet the demands of a variety of office spaces spread over five storeys. The scale of the project demanded a powerful, efficient system, so Easy Air Conditioning and Cundall specified the Panasonic ECOi VRF system. During three phases of delivery, Easy Air Conditioning installed 24 VRF systems comprised of 42 of Panasonic’s heat pumps and heat condensing units. Each VRF system is controlled by a Panasonic CZ-256ESMC2 touchscreen controller and is integrated into the building management system of the site, to
developer-update.co.uk
provide a flexible and user-friendly heating and cooling solution. “When we worked out the scale of the project and how many units we would have to install, Panasonic’s VRF system became the obvious choice,” said Andy Wootton of Easy Air Conditioning. “We wanted to give the client a heating and cooling system that was easy to use and provided the capacity they needed, and Panasonic ticked all the boxes. They offer great products which are easy to install and very energy efficient.” Panasonic heat pumps and condensing units lead the market in their ease of installation and maintenance, which were key factors on this project, as the
units were to be installed on the roof of the building where space was limited. The ECOi VRF system also puts energy efficiency at the forefront, operating with a COP of 4.63, while able to offer heating and cooling simultaneously at high performance, making it the perfect solution for a large office building with hundreds of staff. The ceilings in the Heal’s Building are lower than one might typically find in a modern office building, due to its heritage as a furniture manufacturing facility. Easy Air Conditioning installed Panasonic’s MM range of horizontal ‘slimline’ ceiling-mounted units, designed for spaces with low ceilings. They were unable to fit a false ceiling around the units because of the lack of space, which meant that the cold air from the units would flow straight down onto the people who worked below them, causing pockets of cold air around the office.
Easy Air Conditioning installed large plates around the outputs of the units to take advantage of the Coanda effect, where the air flows out horizontally along the bottom of the plates, so it doesn’t fall straight out of the unit onto the people below, providing a consistent cooling effect across the office. Easy Air Conditioning also took advantage of the off coil temperature control facility of the Panasonic units to maintain the off coil temperature at 12 degrees, so that the air that was emitted from the units was already slightly warmer than a regular cooling system. Easy Air Conditioning supplemented the ceiling-mounted units with a large number of Panasonic’s MR1 series floor standing units concealed discreetly in cabinets beneath windows. These units, specifically designed to be concealed in perimeter enclosures, enable flexible installation
as supply pipes can be connected to either side of the unit from the bottom or the rear. This flexibility ensured that areas of offices nearer the windows, which can be warmer in the summer due to the sun, were cooled to a temperature consistent with the rest of the office. Without a false ceiling, the units, trunking and pipes of the air conditioning system were exposed, so the interior designers decided to embrace this and incorporate it into the stripped back, industrial-chic design aesthetic of the iconic Heal’s Building. The low ceilings on the second floor of the Heal’s building posed a challenge to Cundall and Easy Air Conditioning because it meant they couldn’t install a false ceiling, so the cold air from the ceiling units would fall down directly onto the people who worked below them. Therefore to create the Coanda Effect, where airflow sticks to a surface and is therefore distributed
more widely across the office, Easy Air and Cundall installed large plates next to the outputs of the units. The air flows horizontally, stuck to the bottom of the plates, so it doesn’t fall straight out of the unit onto the people below, providing a more temperate air conditioning system. The owners of the Heal’s building were keen, wherever possible, to maintain the heritage look and feel of the building so specified a subtle and unobtrusive heating and cooling system that blended in with the existing interior design. Easy Air and Cundall therefore concealed a large number of Panasonic’s R1 type floor standing units in cabinets below the windows. Areas near the windows tend to be warmer in the summer, so installing cooling units beneath the windows ensured an even distribution of cold air throughout the offices. www.aircon.panasonic.eu developer-update.co.uk

New Video Highlights How To Reduce Energy in Your Building
A new video from Mitsubishi Electric shows how the company took its head office from an ‘E’ to a ‘B’ energy rating and offers advice on how other companies can do the same. With tough legislation focusing attention on energy use in the built environment, how we heat, cool and ventilate our buildings is coming under scrutiny as never before. “We’ve been on an eight year journey and one of the things we are saying in this video is that any business could and should be planning to improve the performance of their building”, explains Russell Jones who hosts the video. “Just like any other company we have had to make a strong business case for each new piece of equipment, but the fact that we have improved so much and have significantly reduced running costs shows the advantages that can be gained”. The video can be viewed on the company’s dedicated YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/mitsubishielectric2

Free CPD Guide to energy labelling regulations Mitsubishi Electric has produced a free, CPDaccredited guide to the new Energy Related Products Directive or ErP (2009/125/EC), which is a key part of the European Union’s drive to encourage consumers to use more energy efficient products. The ErP Directive, which came into force at the end of September, now means that commercial and residential heating products will need to display an energy label, so that consumers can quickly understand the energy efficiency of the products they purchase. A similar market transformation strategy has already proved highly successful with consumer goods such as fridges and freezers, where it is now very rare to find anything below an A rated product available on the high street.
The Directive is a two-part strategy. Firstly, the ErP requires manufacturers to produce energy-using products that meet stringent minimum performance standards. And secondly, these products must be clearly labelled using a standard methodology so that consumers can quickly understand the energy efficiency of the products they purchase. The CPD Guide covers both main parts of the ErP: the EcoDesign regulations and the Energy Labelling regulations. The guide explains how the labelling is designed to help businesses and homeowners understand the benefits of each technology and focuses on the importance of ErP in relation to legislation such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). SPEEDHEAT RISES TO CHILLY If you think it’s starting to turn chilly here, spare a thought for those living and working on a scientific research base in the freezing Antarctic! Keeping warm in temperatures that can plunge to -50oC in the long, dark winters is not a choice for the team on the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) IV research station. It’s a matter of survival. But as the Antarctic summer begins when temperatures can rise to a positively balmy -5oC, the opportunity is being taken to install extra comfort, thanks to the ingenuity of electrical underfloor heating specialist, Speedheat. The base is on Vesleskarvet (Norwegian for little barren mountain) on the Ahlmann Ridge, about 100 miles from the coast. Its three modules are on stilts to keep them clear of the deep snows of an Antarctic winter. The electricity supply is powered by diesel generators, and
any waste heat from these goes into heat exchangers to provide most of the warmth to the inside of the modules. But this method of heating is difficult to control so, as part of a renovation project, Speedheat’s advanced floor heating system has been chosen to provide supplementary, thermostatically-controlled warmth in two of the two-storey modules. The third houses a helicopter and the generators and does not require additional heating. Different wattage mats of Speedheat’s unique cabling have been specifically designed for the different final floorings chosen for the base, such as bamboo laminate, vinyl and tiles. Speedheat has given full installation and commissioning training to the contractors in Cape Town who are laying flooring for SANAE IV. Contractors, flooring and the entire heating system are now on their way by ship and the fitters will return towards the end of February 2016. This is not the first extreme Speedheat installation. The company has quite literally gone to the both ends of the world from North to South as it has also been selected to supply floor heating for crew accommodation on Statoil Norway’s Aasta Hansteen gas rig in the deep waters of the Norwegian Sea. At just 1.5mm deep and with no major installation upheaval, the system has also been the choice for historic buildings in the UK, such as the extraordinary Durlston Castle in Dorset, new builds, sensitive conversions and for

CHALLENGE a home with a solar energy supply. It is equally comfortable in a conservatory, a single cold spot or as the primary heating for an entire building. Said Joan Pentland, managing director of Speedheat UK: “We have always known that every installation is different and that Speedheat floor heating can be designed to suit any space. The SANAE IV contract, awarded through our South African base, proves it. “It is a remarkable project that demonstrates the versatility and adaptability of the system, whether for a British home, in a castle, for a hotel or offices, a rig out at sea or in one of the coldest places on earth.”

36 Bathrooms & Kitchens NOVELLINI SHOWER BASES –LEVEL ACCESS
With over 40 Years experience Novellini is the European and a World leader in the production and manufacture of Shower enclosures and trays, Baths, Whirlpools, Steam Enclosures and Wetroom solutions. In the last decade Novellini has made significant investments into environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and continues to strive towards ever more sustainable holistic production and distribution methods for the future.
Over the years Novellini has continually developed shower trays, being one of the first companies to offer fully engineered large format shower trays in a number of sizes and colours as either low profile or more conventional raised with legs trays - all from UK stock.
With the Olympic Plus shower tray - Novellini was one of the first manufacturers of large format shower trays to reintroduce the production of textured shower floor surfaces. For many years the Olympic shower tray by Novellini has been the only slip resistant (non- enamelled) product in the European bathroom market.
Novellini realised the importance of a more engineered shower tray from an early stage and pioneered the use of innovative materials and fabrication methods in the Olympic Plus shower tray, which today is still one of the strongest and most stable large format shower trays. The Metal reinforced composite construction, now also used in the new Custom tray, means that (unlike many low profile resin stone products), Novellini trays arrive On-site Flat and ready to install.
In recent years Novellini has developed the UK’s leading Wetroom and tanking product, with solutions to suit both timber and concrete installations. The Novellini Wetroom systems allow designers to create uncluttered, lowmaintenance, spacious, level access & fully tiled shower spaces

IN OR ON THE FLOOR –The Novellini Custom Tray can be installed on the floor as a low level conventional shower tray or placed directly onto joists to achieve a flush level-access solution without the need for any further fixing frames. (in addition a raised tray with a void for plumbing including legs is available for surface plumbing)
UK STOCK COLOURS AND SIZES – The Novellini Custom Tray is available in White, Grey, Black & Beige from UK Stock and there are 18 basic sizes – in addition each Custom Tray can be adjusted in Length by up to 200mm offering many more sizes than the basic 18.
ANTI-SLIP – The Novellini Custom Tray is available with an optional Factory applied genuine European standard, Certificated, Anti-slip which is applied to the top surface of the tray - leaving a 10cm Border around the edge so that any Silicone beading is applied to an easily cleaned gloss surface. EASY 2 CLEAN – The Novellini Custom tray IS easy to clean! The
materials used for the Custom shower tray are designed to be cleaned by conventional household bathroom cleaning products, including lime-scale cleaners and bleach. (The Anti-slip is a rough surface and will potentially hold grime and lime-scale – chemical cleaners will be required and unlike enamelled steel surfaces the materials used for the Custom Tray are not adversely affected.)
HIGH FLOW SHOWER WASTE – The Novellini Custom Tray has a specially designed shallow trap waste with a 50 litre/min flow rate. The Waste cover is completely flush with the surface of the shower tray, is easily removed for cleaning and is made from high grade stainless steel which, unlike a chromed waste cover, will not discolour or peel if in contact with bleach or lime-scale cleaning products. ROBUST – Novellini shower trays are built to last. Olympic and Custom
shower trays arrive On-site in their own individual secure packaging which protects them from most handling accidents, avoiding chips and knocks, (a fairly common problem with enamelled steel products). The composite steel reinforced construction ensures that the trays arrive flat and ready to install; they are not subject to the warping, (which is quite likely with low profile resin-cast products).
CUT TO SHAPE – 200mm of one end of the Novellini Custom shower tray is designed so that if required the Custom tray can be cut to fit around a Soil Pipe Boxing for instance or perhaps an Out of True wall?.....

BIM OBJECTS FOR NATURAL SLATES AND FAÇADE PRODUCTS NOW AVAILABLE FROM CEMBRIT Leading roofing and cladding manufacturer, Cembrit, has introduced the first BIM (Building Information Modelling) objects in the UK for natural slates. At the same time, the company has introduced BIM objects for some of its cladding range. Designed to help estate managers, public bodies and specifiers utilise Cembrit products in their designs, this new service is the first part of a multi-stage process that will see the whole Cembrit product portfolio available as BIM objects. BIM is used by architects, main contractors and other specifiers in the planning and design phase of projects
to create digital representations of buildings, together with detailed technical information, accreditations and other background data to create an information rich specification. Manufacturers, including Cembrit, have developed BIM-compatible models of their products for integration into such designs and plans. At present, Cembrit’s top quality Glendyne and Alpina ranges of natural slates as well as popular Cembonit, Metro, Zenit and True ranges of rainscreen cladding boards are now available as BIM objects. “We are trying to facilitate the use of natural slates for publicly funded contracts and are pleased to be leading the natural slate industry in promoting this traditional yet sustainable material,” says Ged Ferris,
Marketing Manager at Cembrit. “With the creation of our BIM façade objects we are providing a choice for those involved with fibre cement rainscreen cladding specifications. I urge anyone interested in BIM to click on the links on our homepage” Cembrit’s BIM objects for natural slate and façades contain detailed dimensions, product specifications and other key details, along with high quality 3D images to add into virtual model and simulated building designs. Compatible with both, Revit and IFC software versions, Cembrit’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects are hosted on the NBS National BIM Library and are available to be downloaded to integrate it into any BIM software.

Langley Waterproofing Systems top of the class for London school National roofing and waterproofing experts, Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd, has helped London’s largest high school, and third largest in the UK, Kingsbury High School, refurbish its roof ensuring it meets the highest standards. Kingsbury High School approached specialist consultants, Capital Property and Construction Consultants (Capital PCC), to refurbish its facilities and help provide greater efficiency and all-weather proof systems within its buildings. Capital PCC called upon Langley to carry out a complete survey of the school’s existing 9,000m² roof system. Langley compiled an in-depth report document detailing the findings and made recommendations for improvement works. The report allowed Langley to identify solutions to ensure the school was compliant with building regulations, and highlighted complications with the schools current roof drainage system which required a full redesign of each roof area.
and Princes Lane – Langley worked closely with Capital PCC and Langley approved contractors, Breyer Roofing to complete the first phase of the project on the Bacon Lane premise – an area totalling 6,000m². The roof’s unusual architectural design, which included a central block with two curved wings coming forward, meant that every roof had to be individually designed due to the variation between the different roofs and drainage issues each roof presented.
Problems with the existing roof included ineffective insulation, defects in asphalt surfaces and cracks and interlayer blistering. Evidence of a long history of waterproofing issues was also found across the roofs due Langley’s technical team were on to issues with the drainage system and hand to deliver support and advice drainage patterns of the roof which throughout the project, including caused flooding during heavy rainfall. weekly site monitoring and regular Split into two areas – Bacon Lane meetings, resulting in a roof that has
enabled the school to retain more heat, thanks to improved insulation. Luke Vivian, Chartered Surveyor and Associate of Capital PCC, said: “When the project was brought to our attention, we contacted Langley as we knew we could depend on their guidance and technical assistance. Langley were able to calculate the best solutions thanks to the survey they carried out, which included detailed design of the tapered insulation to the flat roofing. “The technical after-sales support Langley provided, which includes inspections and roof guarantees, ensured that the project ran smoothly. We are pleased with how the project has been delivered and we have also received fantastic feedback from the school.” With the first phase of the project complete, work on the second phase could finish by October 2015, if the school’s application for funding is successful. Tim Gardner, Area Manager at Langley, said: “This was a challenging project to be involved in due to the size and scale of the existing roofs and the timeframes given by the school. “After working closely with both Capital PCC and Breyer Roofing, we are delighted with the ongoing results. The feedback we have received from the school has been excellent and we’re now looking forward to completing the project once the second phase can commence.” For more information on Langley’s extensive range of roofing solutions please visit www.langley.co.uk
