T

o deliver true decarbonisation we need a varied - and uniformed - choice of secure, accessible and affordable fuel sources which need to be internationally identified and agreed. When the manual and logistical reality of an energy transition period begins then a change in attitude and behaviour from the consumer will be necessary for the success of achieving Net Zero. Domestic and commercial energy supply, production, storage and distribution will fundamentally have to change and the effects of which will require the end user to change their attitudes and behaviour towards their own energy appliances and sources.

Cleanly sourced and affordable domestic energy is happening now, and it demonstrates that science and industry have commercial answers to combat any possible justification of utilizing fossil fuels. There is a constant trickle of new developments and investments in hydrogen - one of the latest is from Centrica (British Gas as was), which is ready to put £1.6bn of investment into a hydrogen storage site just off the North Sea coast of Yorkshire. It could create 3-4,000 jobs during construction and store hydrogen instead of methane. At the micro end of the scale of societal change all products and systems delivering heating and hot water will need to include affordable whole-life cycle

costings along with a host of other features such as - easily installed and working to maximum overall engineering and economic eff iciency. There is a considerable move by major manufacturers towards the development of products that will achieve zero emissions but with maximum total efficiency. In layman’s’ terms this means that a product system for domestic heating and hot water and for commercial heating must be designed and installed so that it is constantly working at max efficiency for the longest possible time, with no built-in obsolescence. End users should be persuaded to give preference to those manufacturers with a wide variance of modulations – and a track record of innovation. Already there are several noted manufacturers offering hydrogen-ready products and systems. Along with this we must quickly accept the need for societal change as a beneficial inevitability. It will become constant and does not have to be treated with trepidation. Societal change acts like gravity in flowing down to the individual and often happens in times of social pressure or when new technology is introduced. The effect on personal routine that societal change demands soon dissipates as new practises and benefits change attitudes.

WWII, global computerization and the current COVID-19 pandemic are three notable examples of societal change within the last 100 years. All three have imposed restrictions on human behaviour or have required widespread society to adopt alternative circular methods and adapt commercial customs. WWII was responsible for almost 50 million deaths, saw multiple cities entirely levelled and millions across the European continent in camps with refugee status. In Britain, throughout the Blitz on London, society adapted to extreme hardship by adopting different habits and accepting government safety advice. Rationing, military conscription, blackouts and severe centralised control of every facet of everyone’s life were imposed and accepted by the population, demonstrating society’s ability to modify its behaviour in challenging circumstances. The task of global computerization can be considered another instance of societal change. Before the introduction of computers off ice culture was markedly different to a recent perspective. Paper was consumed in abundance and that meant forest clearances. All things visual - graphs, charts and presentations - had to be cranked out on paper having been either hand drawn or typewritten - soaking up countless hours of manpower, time and money. Workplace communication before computers was – by today’s standards - slow, inefficient, and wholly reliant on the telephone, the typewriter and the filing cabinet. As computers have now been accepted by the overwhelming majority of the global work force it is evident that societal change has been accelerated by technology. Communication is possible anytime, anywhere and on a wide selection of platforms.

Computerization has also impacted working culture by introducing flexibility to working hours away from office environments, allowing for a degree of balance between work and home life. Another example of societal change is the current COVID-19 pandemic which has imposed large restrictions on usual commercial and domestic activity. Due to the risk of infection transmission large sections of society have had to assume new routines structured around health and safety issues. The international economy has suffered. Social life has been paused. COVID-19 has limited domestic and commercial life and directed global attention towards presenting workable solutions. Functioning hospitals were constructed within a fortnight, a vaccine produced and distributed in a record time scale and billions across the world obeyed lock down rules. Widespread health and safety constraints that reduced financial income have been introduced and accepted by consumers and traders alike. In all three examples the temporary discomfort caused by societal change has been minimum in comparison to the benef its that change brings. Societal change is necessary in terms of the additional social experience that is gained which ultimately enhances human knowledge. Owing to societal change future generations will be more advanced technically and medically due to recent progress. Social change and the ensuing adaptation are vital to human development. It is evident that societal change is a healthy habit. Without progress there would be no NHS, education system, sporting facilities, computers, internet and global communication. Although a temporary nuisance, the refinement of social structure is constantly required.

History demonstrates that human improvement begins with social change. If we all work together to a common goal we will get there quicker. Dellner Bubenzer Relaunches at AIST

Dellner Brakes, owner of Pintsch Bubenzer, relaunched as Dellner Bubenzer at the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) Conference and Exposition which took place last month in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. A new website has also gone live at www.dellnerbubenzer.com. Dellner Brakes JHS, Dellner Brakes, Dellner Industrial, Pintsch Bubenzer and Rima are operating as one company with immediate effect. Sweden’s Dellner Group—Dellner Brakes was a subsidiary—acquired German industrial braking manufacturer Pintsch Bubenzer in January 2018, in a deal that has paved the way for the companies’ ongoing global expansion. Pintsch Bubenzer makes high performance disc and drum brakes for cranes and other severe duty applications, as well as complementary products, such as emergency and storm brakes. Four months earlier, Dellner Brakes had acquired U.S. brake and clutch company Gummi USA.

The team started planning at the beginning of the year and was shooting for an April to July launch, which has been delivered on time.

Installation of traditional glass clamps can be a tricky process, with multiple parts a n d g a s ke t s to disassemble and reassemble to ensure the correct clamp thickness.

AICO LADIES TAKE ON THE PEDAL PUSHERS BIKE RIDE CHALLENGE Aico, the European leader in home life safety, were delighted to host Adrenaline Sporting Events ladies only Pedal Pushers event on Sunday 18th July, with Aico colleagues also getting involved in the challenge to raise money for local charity, The Movement Centre.

T

he Pedal Pushers event began at Aico’s h ea d q u a r t e r s in Oswestry and brought together varied participants from f irst timers of all ages through to competitive cycl i s t s . T h e eve n t offered 30-mile and 45-mile routes with Aico colleagues opting for the 30-mile route, raising over £600 in aid of local charity The Movement Centre, with additional colleagues volunteering to help co-ordinate the event. Rebecca Cumblidge, Finance Clerk at Aico who took part in the challenge commented “I initially decided to take part following a suggestion f rom a colleague so we can support each other during training and on the day. What spurred me on was raising money for The Movement Centre and the encouragement f rom my f riends and family. The ride itself was really fun and very hot! There was a fantastic atmosphere here at Aico before we set off. I am extremely proud of developer-update.co.uk

Kelly, Jane and myself for completing the challenge in under two and a half hours and that we all smashed our fundraising targets. I l o o k fo r wa rd to completing next year’s 45-mile challenge.” Internal Sales Manager, Kelly Hodgetts, enjoyed the event and said “I was happy to sign up and support the Movement Centre, the work they do and the profound difference it makes to the lives of the children they support, and their families is amazing. When it came to the actual ride, I was not sure what to expect and how much the weather would affect us as it was a hot one. Overall, it was a great experience, the route was beautiful, the support was fantastic, we finished in a respectable time and there was cake at the finish. Alan Lewis, Founder and Owner of Adrenaline Sporting Events was delighted with the event adding “I have wanted to put on a ladies only ride for a number of years after being aware of the gender gap in

cycling, so to see 100 ladies at Aico on Sunday was a fabulous feeling. All the riders who started the event finished in good health and with big smiles. To have ladies travel from Birmingham, South Wales and the Northwest was brilliant to see. A special thank you must go out to the volunteers, sponsors, St Johns Ambulance and Aico for hosting this special event.” The Pedal Pushers event is as part of a series of events they are supporting this summer, ran by local sporting company Adrenaline Sporting Events; Aico also recently hosted the Midnight ride in June, and are headline sponsors of the upcoming Oswestry 10k. STELLA ROOFLIGHT HELPS TURN OLD CAR SHOWROOM INTO NEW SHOW HOME Stella Rooflight has supplied 12 bespoke conservation rooflights for a stunning conversion project in the seaside town of Lytham St Annes in Lancashire. The project to convert a Late Edwardian purpose-built garage and car showroom into a stunning 21st Century modern home was the dream of architect and homeowner Sean Kember. The property was f irst designed and constructed in 1909 by local architect Thomas Hedges, for the Williams Brothers. The building remained a car showroom for over 100 years and to this day the building remains somewhat of an icon in the local area. Conscious of the building’s local history and importance the new owners were careful to preserve the

original fabric of the building, while undertaking the much needed renovation works, which would breathe new life into the building and transform it into their new dream seaside home. A large part of the renovation and conversion works included the complete rebuilding of the old steel structured roof with new timbers and the installation of large conservation rooflights, which would flood the large open internal space with natural daylight. Stella Rooflight were commissioned to produce a total of 12 bespoke conservation

rooflights to fit the new openings. 10 smaller rooflights, which comprised of 6 opening and 4 f ixed f rames, were designed to fit internal rafters of 690mm x 940mm and 550mm x 740mm. A much larger non opening rooflight which was sized at 3000mm wide x 3500mm high was designed as a grand centre piece in the roof. This rooflight was supplied in two sections which were purpose designed to sit one on top of the other, with each section being divided into three panes. All 12 rooflights were manufactured using marine grade stainless steel

and f inished in a high quality C5 marine grade black powder coating. An important consideration given the building’s coastal location and the propensity to rust associated with mild carbon steel rooflights. The Stella rooflights also included a high specif ication glazing with BioClean Self-Clean, Solar Control outer pane with a warm edge spacer filled with Argon Gas. The internal glass panel used Planitherm Comfort Plus to provide the perfect balance of light, warmth and comfort. The rooflight was finished internally with a stunning American Ash interior liner. Due to the size of the larger rooflights, a specialist crane was required to lift the rooflights from the delivery vehicle, over the building and directly into place. The installation

required careful planning, which was overseen by local specialist roofing contractor Ben Valentine-Lynden from Blackpool Industrial Roofing. Ben said: “Throughout the process we dealt directly with Paul at Stella. “ H e wa s i n c re d i b l y h e l p f u l throughout, advising us on the whole installation from the crane lift to weather proofing the roof lights. Paul was also happy to schedule the arrival of the rooflights to suit us and the weather, on arrival the units were packaged excellently and made for an easy transition f rom wagon to roof. “ O ve ra l l I t h i n k t h e s e a re a great product, easy enough to install and the f inished look is fantastic. Would def initely recommend and would use again.”

EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE IS EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO FIRE SAFETY PRODUCTS.

H

o w e v e r, without knowing it, many of us could be making compromises when it comes to our choice of fire foams and fire rated silicones. As a company that manufactures sealants, adhesives and other building chemicals, you might expect us to advocate increased awareness when it comes to choosing fire foams. But selfgain never has, and never will, be Bond It’s main motivation for urging greater consideration when it comes to these products. Instead we believe the building industry in the UK is affected by a serious issue with equally serious, and potentially life-threatening, implications. With lives at stake, and against a backdrop where we are all increasingly accountable for our work and where they have been a

number of high profile examples of poor building practices contributing to the spread of fire, we see it as our responsibility to share our knowledge. The problem stems from the existence of too many different but similar sounding classification systems. This has created a degree of confusion which has left many in the sector at risk of inadvertently using fire foams with levels of performance that fall woefully short of the mark. Not all fire foams are created equal Years ago specifying a fire foam was a lot simpler and arguably safer than it is today. You had the choice of either a standard foam or a fire foam with both types available in either a gun or handheld form. To benefit from its classification, fire foam had to comply with BS476 part 20. This meant it would act as a barrier to fire for 4 hours giving a building’s occupants vital time to escape. Then, with an influx of European foams into the UK came a proliferation of dif ferent standards. The most widespread was a German standard based on a sliding scale. This ranged from A1 (100% non-combustible) through to A2, B1, B2 and B3 with the latter offering the worst levels of performance. If the introduction of a whole new standard system and a large number of differing classifications didn’t serve to

create enough confusion, the way of assessing the UK and European standards was also totally different. The UK standard meant a fire foam had to act as a barrier to prevent fire transferring from one room to another for a period of four hours. The German standard meanwhile was based on someone trying to ignite the foam itself - not a very realistic scenario. Savings - but at what cost? One of the most widely seen classifications people now find on fire foams is B2 and it’s not hard to understand why. B2 strikes a fine balance between offering some fire resistance and at a cost that won’t hurt budgets – or margins. However, in our opinion, B2 ‘fire’ foam’s performance is totally inadequate and we don’t think it should be sold as fire foam at all. Yes, there are savings and profits to be made, but at the end of the

day, what price do you put on property or even more poignantly, on someone’s life? As we near the 4th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, we are hoping lessons have been learnt. Like most of our competitors, we react to market demand and do supply a B2 PU foam as part of our range. However, we are strict about this not being referred to as a “fire” foam and it is not marketing under this guise at all. We clearly state what the products performance characteristics are and what it is tested to.

An intumescent seal slows down the burning process and does not contribute to spread of flames. Therefore, it can minimize the damage by protecting structures, giving fire fighters more time to arrive and take the fire under control as well as fireproofing escape routes allowing for efficient evacuation.

Better safe than sorry

How does intumescent sealant work?

In its simplest terms, our advice would in ever y circumstance if you need fire protection from your foams nothing less than B1 is really acceptable as a bare minimum standard and for silicones we would recommend a fire tested sealant. Look for the standards EN1366 -4, EN1366-3, EN ISO 10140-2 and EN13501-2 on packs - which are proof that the foams and sealants will do their job and you can be safe in the knowledge that you’ve chosen a true fire foam or fire rated sealant that will leave people safe in their homes, offices and other buildings.

Intumescent seals are known as means of passive fire protection, but what is an intumescent s ealant in prac tice? Als o known as expansion sealant, intumescent sealant expands when it becomes exposed to extreme heat and can swell up to 40 times its original volume. The sealant increases in volume but decreases in density forming a char layer. The expanded sealant does not actually catch fire, but the char burns eventually, still much more slowly than most building materials. Depending on the product formulation, application and backing material, an intumescent sealant can be resistant to fire for up to 4 hours. Buildings require different levels of fire resistance depending on their size and whether they have a residential purpose.

Of course, it would be remiss of Bond It to highlight an issue as grave as current fire foam classification and misclassif ication without p ro p o s i n g a solution. Thankfully, there is one and it’s also fairly easy to implement.

Silicone sealants also play a big part in ensuring the integrity of fire resistant seals and joints. These are used in re-establishing the fire-rated integrity of a wall or floor assembly compromised by the inclusion or exclusion of a penetrant. Flames and smoke can spread through the smallest of gaps causing extreme damage to buildings and even human lives. P C Henderson has further expanded its range of pocket door systems with the launch of a brand new fire rated system for bi-parting doors. Originally launched for single doors back in February 2019 – this latest release of the company’s popular Pocket Door Pro system caters for bi-parting fire doors weighing up to 120kg and is fully certif ied to FD30 British and European standards.

The new system is available in standard and soft closing options, seven different kit sizes, for two different f inished wall thicknesses, self-closing and non self-closing variants and a simultaneous action kit available as an optional extra.

HDR | Hurley Palmer Flatt provides building services for landmark local government centre The new MidCoast Council administration building is an adapted big box retail site formerly occupied by collapsed hardware chain Masters The building accommodating the MidCoast council, a local government authority in the mid-north coast of New South Wales, represents the f irst time council staff have been able to work side by side since the newly consolidated administration was formed in 2016. The council’s new administration building – named Yalawanyi Gunyah, meaning sitting/ meeting place, to honour the local Aboriginal culture – is a complete restoration of a former retail/warehouse site that was once occupied by the home and building supply outlet Masters. HDR provided all the building services, including mechanical, electrical, f ire protection and hydraulic. Located on the outskirts of Taree, the building was acquired by the council in 2017, at which point HDR engineers were engaged, consulting with the council throughout the planning, design and construction stages, leading to, ultimately, an eye-catching centralised local government complex. HDR’s goal was to retain as many of the existing services as possible within a redevelopment that had to comply with a new set of standards under its change in use to a commercial office building. developer-update.co.uk

“Our core challenge was how do we take this expansive industrial structure and modify its services so it could be used comfortably as an office and meeting place for council staff and the public,” says Shayne Blazley, HDR project director. “We are increasingly seeing old buildings adapted for new uses which we wholeheartedly support for a sustainable built environment.” HDR aimed to retain as many of the existing building services as possible for a sustainable and cost-efficient approach to the project. The building required new acoustics, insulation, lighting, as well as a new heating and cooling system, which were designed and fitted along with other internal structural works delivered by local contractors. “Our new premises not only offers our community a modern and f riendly way to interact with us, but also enables our staff to work much more collaboratively and eff iciently,” says MidCoast Council general manager, Adrian Panuccio. “Teams no longer have the constraints of working across three different buildings – just one of a range of benefits to our staff, which have a flow on effect to our community.”

MidCoast Council bought the 3.7 hectare Masters site, at the corner of Manning River Drive and Biripi Way, Taree, in 2017. At the time the acquisition was a strategic commercial opportunity. The warehouse spanned 9,910 square metres, and included polished concrete floors, air conditioning, 281 car parking spaces and associated infrastructure. The converted facility consolidates four administration centres, in Forster and Taree, and now accommodates 400 staff in an activity-based working model, and incorporates a council chambers, meeting rooms, training rooms, collaboration spaces, quiet space, a lunchroom, change rooms and a public café. developer-update.co.uk

he League 1 Club’s stadium, built in 2010, has already needed to refurbish the exposed areas of the façade due to the extreme climatic conditions faced as a result of its proximity to the sea. hen the desired toilet discharge pipe run exceeds th e specif ied pumping parameters of a “basic” back of toilet macerator, pumping long horizontal distances straight from the back of the toilet, a double lift (horizontally, then vertical, horizontal again and then vertical again), or even up a slope, there is now a solution. The unique, German engineered, FlushMaster toilet waste pumping unit f rom Pump Technology Ltd. will handle all of these situations with ease. The powerful motor with its freeflow vortex impeller pump is designed to generate the high pumping head and flow needed to overcome these convoluted pipe runs. It can reliably discharge waste from a toilet, bidet, washbasin or shower where others can’t. Additionally, it features deliberately large clearances between the pump inlet and tank floor, making it considerably more tolerant of user abuse. In the event of a problem the FlushMaster features some simple solutions. There is an integral acoustic alarm with the option of voltf ree contacts for coupling with a remote alarm or BMS to indicate that some maintenance is required. Then, to unclog the vortex impeller, simply insert a screw driver into the top of the motor/pump shaft (to do this it is not even necessary to remove the cover) and reverse its direction. The clogged item will probably drop free.! For more stubborn

blockages, simply remove two screws, twist and lift the complete motor/ pump assembly away, leaving the tank connected to the toilet. Any foreign objects can be clearly seen and removed.

GOOD MANAGEMENT IS KEY TO A ROOF’S LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE By Kevin O’Connell at IKO Group Dependent on the products and materials used, a flat roof’s waterproofing should last between 20 and 40 years. Good maintenance will also contribute to its performance and longevity. But which proactive steps need to be taken when a waterproofing system reaches the end of its serviceable life? Roofing purpose When deciding on a waterproof ing system for a flat roof application, it’s important to consider what it’s meant to do. An appropriately-designed and correctly-installed solution will prevent a prevalence of standing water, which in-turn will protect the structural integrity of the building itself. Water carries immense weight and when left to pond, it could lead to the breakdown of the roof’s coating which will leave the roof susceptible to the UV degradation. As an example of the immense strain it can bring to bear, 1mm of water per m2 equates to 1kg. Therefore, that same level of water across a 5mm x 30m2 surface would be akin to two adults standing on a roof. Long-standing water can also promote vegetation growth in the form of plants and fungi; wildlife that can penetrate a flat roof’s surface and cause untold damage to the building itself. As well as keeping a roof dry, a good waterproofing system should ensure it achieves regulatory levels of thermal performance. In poorly insulated homes, roofs account for 25% of a building’s heat loss. It is crucial, therefore, that the insulation supplied as part of a build-up offers an effective barrier to energy escape whilst being of suitable thickness to prevent the obstruction of door and window thresholds. Its design should also take into account roofs with plant installations, walkways and safety features such as guardrails and hatch systems. Monitor to prevent major repairs Good management can be achieved by gaining an understanding of your roof stock. Is it old or is it new? Are there other plans for the building that could impact the roof? New windows may provide less ventilation than old ones; therefore will an extension be required to facilitate such an installation? Prevention is better than cure, a saying that is particularly pertinent to roof ing management. Neglecting to act upon tell-tale signs of a roof’s degradation can transform a seemingly minor maintenance issue into a major repair project that potentially comes at great expense to a property owner in order to keep it weathertight and its occupants safe. This worst-case scenario can be avoided by keeping a periodical look-out for signs developer-update.co.uk

of natural wear and tear which indicate a roof’s performance is in danger of being compromised. These visual sirens might include elements such as lap joints becoming loose or in the case of an asphalt roof, the appearance of surface lumps and creases, or even blocked outlets. Getting the balance right In terms of appropriate waterproof specification for flat roofs, property owners must strike a balance between the ‘nice’ to have, with the ‘need’ to have. To ensure this thin line is more easily navigated, it’s important to decide upon a level of spending by drawing up a budget. This should take into account future plans for the roof asset and the building itself. PUTTING TEATS HILL BACK ON THE MAP Jacksons Fencing’s Sentry® residential railings specified for a social housing regeneration project.

As part of a wider regeneration of Plymouth, Teats Hill, known as the ‘unforgotten corner’ recently underwent a much-needed transformation. The residents’ call for change instigated Plymouth City Council, partnering with several local organisations including Plymouth and Exeter Universities, Blue Health, and the National Marine Aquarium. Together, they selected f ive sites across the city to benefit, to improve the quality of life for the local community. In Teats Hill, an existing play area was restored. It now boasts brand new equipment to reflect its marine location and heritage. An amphitheatre was also constructed to host educational activities, public events, and performances.

Pole position Alongside the development, Teats Hill flats, built in the late 1930s, were renovated by Mi-space Construction. The flats offer unrivalled sea views and are situated in a prized location near the National Marine Aquarium. Despite this, the building had been neglected for many years and consequently had fallen into disrepair. The flats were also not compliant with current building regulations, as it is a legal requirement for any wall over 600mm high to have a handrail of at least 1100mm high, to protect people from falling. The demarcation wall surrounding the flats was over this height and therefore needed securing with adequate fencing. Fit for purpose Jackson Fencing’s Sentry® Residential railings were specif ied for the project. These were installed on top of the wall by Chiffi Group Ltd, Constructionline Gold Member fence contractors.

The tubular construction and welded stopped pale-through-rail design meant these railings provided a strong but lightweight safety fencing solution. The building’s original features needed to be carefully considered and preserved during the renovation. This made these metal railings the ideal solution, designed specifically to offer a more f itting, modern alternative to traditional wrought iron railings, while providing the same elegant appearance. The railings are hot- dipped galvanised inside and out, to ensure long-lasting protection against rust and corrosion. Finally, a black polyester powder coating was added to provide a durable and attractive solution that would match the renewed aesthetic of the building. Crucially, the pale spacing of the railings conforms to building regulations, which state that a 100mm sphere should not be able to pass between pales, to prevent a trap hazard, which is particularly essential in areas where children are present.

T

he South West Water sewer upgrade project at Fowey needed a supplier of specific and unique recoil non-slam check valves. T-T Pumps was the only supplier who could meet their requirements. Fowey is a picture-postcard harbour town in South Cornwall. Over the past few years, the residents had been experiencing several internal and external sewer flooding events centred around the Whitford Yard and Lostwithiel Street areas. developer-update.co.uk

To protect residents f rom future flooding and enhance public health, South West Water designed a new sewer installation project that would transform the 70 metre-long existing sewer between Whitford Yard and the Town Quay pumping station into a modern service residents could rely upon not to flood. Completed in February and March of 2021, the project South West Water undertook was not without its challenges: The narrow streets of Fowey and the need to close main thoroughfares

South West Water’s planning for the Fowey sewer upgrade was detailed and included state-of-the-art valves that would be integral to deliver a reliable defence against any future flooding. Due to our flexible approach a n d co n s ta n t c u s to m e r communication, we were able to arrange dedicated transport to ensure they arrived on-time.” Efficient valve supply The DN150 recoil non-slam check valve is unique to T-T Pumps. In addition, the T-T Flow recoil check valve features weld deposit bronze seats, unlike competitor valves that tend to offer push-f it seats, which risk detachment under higher velocities. In addition, the T-T Flow recoil check valves unique design ensures rapid closure where extreme flow exists. Its robust design incorporates an angled seat, and its high eccentricity design reduces the risk of water hammer and valve slam.

Also, mechanical assistance is gained by reducing inertia coupled with the optimal suspension of the moving components. Ideal check valve for reducing water hammer in supply systems, often caused by sudden changes in pump state, benefitting from reduced door travel to minimise the potentially damaging effects of water hammer. As a result, the DN150 was a perfect choice for the demanding environment of the new Fowey sewer. SEISMIC SAVINGS IN BLAST PROTECTION Seismic activity may be rare in the UK, but many buildings and critical infrastructure need to be protected from blasts. The cost of specialised equipment capable of withstanding the forces and violent movement caused by seismic and blast activity can be extortionate. However, there is an alternative, more efficient way of providing this blast protection than the traditionally expensive ‘ruggedisation’ method. Here, Adam Fox, director of vibration control specialist Mason UK, explains how you can provide effective blast protection in projects, including where vibration isolation is also required. Say ‘seismic activity’ in the UK and you might just think of a few damaged chimney pots. Yet while genuine seismic activity might be rare, the engineering expertise that is used to protect buildings from seismic activity still has relevant applications. Bomb blasts or terrorist activity can subject buildings and critical inf rastructure to what is euphemistically referred to as ‘accidental loads.’ Faced with these accidental loads, buildings need to remain viable. They must remain stable enough for people to evacuate and firefighters to enter if needed. You also want to avoid the ventilation or water supply being taken out by the blast. Consequences like these could be disastrous, especially in military installations or for critical infrastructure like power stations. Engineers therefore design buildings with these criteria in mind. The basic engineering principles were set out in the International Building Code that was designed with the help of our big brother across the pond, Mason Industries, in the 1970s. sufficient blast protection, but in situations where you need to introduce a structural break for vibration isolation reasons, you require a different level of engineering expertise. For example, let’s say you have a building that is mounted on a series of columns and is near a trainline. You might place one of our bearings on top of the column, to protect the building f rom the vibration caused by the train. Suddenly, you have a soft connection between the column and the structure it is supporting. So how do you make sure the column is fit to withstand the accidental loads referred to before? In these situations, where vibration isolation meets blast protection requirements, there are two solutions. The more simple, traditional approach is to apply heavy restraints which can be seriously expensive and if poorly designed can easily negate the benef it of the vibration control measures It is more eff icient for cost and performance to design a connection that respects both. Ensuring building services remain operational can keep a building running. Expensive ‘ruggedised’ plant equipment

can cope with forces but the smarter, far cheaper engineering solution would involve combing anti-vibration mounts with inbuilt restraints. The former provides general vibration isolation but will also reduce any forces from a blast or accidental load down to levels that standard, off the shelf equipment can withstand. You can view this equipment in action on our YouTube channel, where we show spring mounts with seismic restraints cushioning a pump and motor. It may look violent but the goal is to reduce forces down to less than the equipment would see when being shipped to site. We have worked on many projects for the military and government, as well as for buildings whose function just cannot be interrupted for repairs. We worked to provide a holistic engineering solution, ensuring the entire system was designed to withstand accidental loads and protect critical infrastructure. However, the problem is not that we lack a viable engineering solution in these situations. TRAVIS PERKINS BUILDS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE WITH CLEAN, ‘GREEN’ MERCEDES-BENZ VANS FROM INTERCOUNTY T&V Most customers acquiring fullyelectric Mercedes-Benz vans this year will be gaining their first experiences of the manufacturer’s zero-emissions technology – not so Travis Perkins plc. The leading supplier of materials to the UK building and construction industry has just commissioned two eVito models for operation from one of its branches in Edinburgh. They have replaced a pair of emissionsfree E-CELL variants that were based on the previous Vito model range and had been in service since 2015! Travis Perkins Managed Services is a supply chain partner to local authority and social landlords nationwide. Its contract with the City of Edinburgh Council, on which the new vans are now working, is serviced from a facility in the port area of Leith. The long L2 eVito variants arrived, like their predecessors, via Intercounty Truck & Van, a trusted partner to Travis Perkins for the last 13 years. They are out each morning delivering materials to contractors responsible for maintaining and repairing the City of Edinburgh Council’s stock of housing and other properties. Intercounty Truck & Van also provided its high-prof ile customer

with a larger, L2 (medium length), H2 (high roof) eSprinter demonstration unit, which underwent a month-long evaluation at the same depot in Leith, and at another Managed Services location in Stockton-on-Tees. Introduced towards the end of last year, the 3.5-tonne eSprinter is the latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz Vans range. Given the additional load volume it offers, compared to the 3.2-tonne eVito, it represents a more attractive long-term proposition for Travis Perkins. The eSprinter’s cargo area of 11m3 is identical to its diesel-engined, f ront-wheel drive stablemate, and half a cubic metre larger than its rear-wheel drive equivalent. Andrew Hollingsworth, Travis Perkins’ Fleet Business Partner for Scotland and Northern England, explained: “We’ll be running the eVito vans for another year in Edinburgh, but it’s the eSprinter that we’re really excited about. “We carry a lot of bulky items so tend to be more focused on volume than payload. The eSprinter can take 3.0metre worktops and longer lengths of timber, as well as 8ft x 4ft sheets of plywood and other materials. “We’d been looking forward to

getting our hands on one and seeing how it performed, and it didn’t disappoint. The vehicle did everything we’d hoped, and the feedback from both of the depots that took part in the trial was resoundingly positive.” I n te r c o u n t y T r u c k & Va n ’ s demonstrator was certainly a hit with the three colleagues at Travis Perkins’ Leith branch who put the van through its paces. Its 55 kWh high-voltage battery pack is securely mounted beneath the body, so does not impinge on cargo carrying space. The van will travel 95 miles (combined WLTP with 80 km/h speed limiter) on a single charge, which is ample for the majority of urban delivery and last mile applications; recuperative energy recovered when decelerating supplements the batteries’ output. Now superseded, the Vito E-CELL was the world’s first battery-powered light commercial vehicle to be built on-line at a mainstream production facility. As an early adopter of this ground-breaking technology Travis Perkins highlighted its commitment to carbon reduction and support for the City of Edinburgh Council’s environmental targets.
