Titanic 100th Anniversary - Engineering Lessons To Be Learned The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic has prompted many activities programs about the historical event, not so many about the engineering and engineering operations aspects and whether lessons have been properly learned. With recent accidents on cruise ships one could rightly question whether those lessons have been forgotten! Titanic had many positive features and there are lessons for engineering in the failures and features of RMS Titanic. On the evening of 14 April 1912 the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and sank the following day. To mark this 100th anniversary, a half day seminar, sponsored by Engineers Australia, Sydney Division, Electrical Branch and the Joint Electrical Institutions in Sydney, will be led by Philip Mallon an engineer who has extensively researched the engineering aspects of the RMS Titanic through the many publications about Titanic and visit to the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Whilst it is not feasible to cover all engineering issues associated with the Titanic disaster in half a day, this seminar will provide a foundation for further learning from the Titanic experience and lessons for engineering today. Learning from the Titanic - Half-day seminar - 12th April 2012 View further details and register here... Featured in the seminar will be a reconstruction of the Radio Room of the RMS Titanic, based on the research of Dr Peter R Jensen who is the author of Early Radio -- In Marconi's Footstep. That book includes descriptions, photographs and circuit diagrams of Marconi's most important pieces of early wireless equipment and describes the experience of creating replicas of the equipment.
