ENGINEERING SOUTH AUSTRALIA

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Do we conform or stand out from the crowd? This is a question I have often pondered as I look at my children and those with whom I regularly interact. We applaud those who stand out from the crowd on the sporting fields but to get there the life they have led must have been far more challenging than that of the conformist. So what makes people conform or stand out? At the recent Engineering Leadership Conference I was asked to speak at the Young Engineers closing event. I reflected on much of my life but one thing stood out to me; we are heavily influenced by the attitudes and behaviours of those around us. The situation where this really stood out for me was as a child moving between Singapore and Australia. I had an exciting childhood spending time in a number of different countries and moving a lot. I have always felt that a lot of who I am was formed during the 4 years I spent in Singapore, age 7 – 11, as the child of an expat. Singaporean culture was one where you pushed to be the best, to stand out from the crowd and where not giving 100% was absolute failure, even if you passed. I remember my teacher in what is the equivalent of Grade 5, a tall British man with bright red hair and a moustache, Mr Hilland. He knew I was smart, but also knew that one of my weaknesses was the attention to detail required in the more artistic elements. A major feature of the school I went to in Singapore were class projects and Mr Hilland was determined I was going to produce something that looked as good as the work inside of it. I hated this and struggled with it enormously, spending hours cutting out and getting things just right and doing it over and over again until it was exact. At the end I had produced something I was actually very proud of and it looked good as well as reading well and being factually correct. Mr Hilland had forced me to give more than 100% in the areas I liked, he had forced me to give 100% everywhere.

res

I left that experience in Singapore and returned to Australia, where the “tall poppy syndrome” is genuinely a major issue. We have a culture that says if you don’t conform then you will get cut off at the knees until you do, except with sporting heroes who only get one chance. I have never understood why we do this, but do know that over time in Australia I did conform. I kept my head down, did what I needed to do or liked doing and not a whole lot more. It was only when I realised this and became intentionally passionate about what I was doing that I wanted to stick my head up and stand out from the crowd. This has been a gamble and there are days when the harsh words and criticism of others make me want to curl up in a ball, but it has also been exciting. Pursuing the less travelled road and being willing to do things that others may not be means you are never short of challenges. I have listened to the debate raging across the country over the need to improve productivity in our nation. I think our culture, the attitudes and behaviours of those around us, is driving an unproductive nation. I read an opinion piece which blamed the industrial relations laws for this lack of productivity. I don’t completely agree with this, in so far as I believe the industrial relations policies we have could drive productivity more than we do but ultimately it is a cultural thing. When you look at the culture set by our leaders it is one of “knock them down at every opportunity”.

PROPERTY INDUSTRY JOINS FORCES TO KEEP SOUTH AUSTRALIA ON TRACK The property industry has formed a coalition of its many and diverse sectors to shine a light on the sector’s importance to the South Australian economy. And it has harnessed a unique vehicle to spread the message. From Monday 9th July one of Adelaide’s trams appeared with a facelift – redesigned as a building, complete with workers, as a testament to the importance of the built environment to the state and the economy. Speaking on behalf of the Property on Track coalition, Property Council of Australia (SA Division) Executive Director Nathan Paine said the tram symbolised the importance of the property sector in keeping the state moving, “on track” to a brighter future. “The property industry is in a lot of ways a quiet achiever,” Mr Paine said. “People interact with the industry every day of their lives but rarely think of how completely their lives intertwine with the built environment. “They wake up in a house built by the property industry. On the way to work they pass other homes and businesses planned, designed, certified, plumbed and built by the industry. The road they take to work is just one part of a planning system that makes day-to-day living possible – that’s part of the property industry. They get into their Green Star-rated offices with the help of sliding doors, lift and escalators, all designed, built and installed by the property industry. Their offices are kept comfortable by precision air conditioning and engineering provided by the industry. Lighting, bathrooms, office cubicles and fitouts – it’s all part of the property industry. “You get the picture – the property industry is huge. In fact, the property industry is the biggest contributor to the state’s economy, and it employs one in every ten South Australians. “Critically, the property industry is also the biggest contributor to state taxes; the industry paid $1.6 billion in state taxes in 2009/10 alone, representing more than 43 per cent of the state’s own revenue collections. “To put it simply, property is the state’s platform for economic development and growth. When that platform is strong, our state is strong. “We have kicked off this campaign to get the message out there that the property sector keeps our state on track, and that it must be supported. “We hope this campaign helps to educate people about how our industry can help them achieve their dreams; the property industry is intrinsically tied to the growth of our state, and we want to see it prosper. “We encourage every South Australian to get on board to ensure South Australia remains on track to a bright and prosperous future.” Media contact Nathan Paine, Executive Director Property Council of Australia (SA Division) 0448 445 177 | http://twitter.com/PropertyOzSA

BUILDING SKILLS IN ENGINEERING AND MINING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA The Government of South Australia is investing $38.3 million in a dedicated centre of training excellence for the engineering, mining, defence and transport industries, to be based at the TAFE SA Regency campus. Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology Chief Executive Raymond Garrand said that over the next five years, up to 30,000 job openings are expected for engineering and transport related industries alone. “The Mining and Engineering Centre will consolidate and integrate programs previously delivered across the TAFE SA metropolitan network,” Mr Garrand said. “A number of programs to be located at the centre will address skill demands to meet future industry needs and provide students with expanded study pathways and career opportunities. “Subjects covered will include: Mechanical and Civil Engineering; Heavy Vehicle Transport and Diesel Mechanics; Geo Science and Mining; Surveying and Spatial Information Services; Welding and Fabrication; and Automotive and Light Vehicle Transport. “From July 2012, under Skills for All, many courses will be fee-free including those considered by the State Government to be priorities for the State, such as mining and supporting industries. “A particular focus has been placed on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills, which is aimed at increasing the number of students taking courses at the Mining and Engineering Centre. “For example, the importance of our advanced manufacturing industry is supported by the Diploma of Engineering (Welding), as well as the Advanced Diploma of Mechanical and Civil Engineering - and both of these courses will be fee-free. “Engineering will be specifically supported by funded courses, including Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering (Maintenance, Advanced Machining and Pneumatics and Hydraulics), and the Diploma in Spatial Information Services. “For comprehensive information about occupations, training pathways and choosing a career, visit the Skills for All website www.skills.sa.gov.au or call the Infoline on 1800 506 266. “The state-of-the-art facilities at the Mining and Engineering Centre will provide students with access to the latest technology to bring them up to speed with industry. “The project, which is expected to be completed by June 2014, will consolidate and upgrade key training facilities on one site. “This will ensure more responsive and targeted curriculum development, improved skills training, and more opportunities for South Australians to access training required to meet the needs of existing, new and emerging industries,” Mr Garrand said. WORLEYPARSONS RECOGNISES CHARTERED ACHIEVEMENT “WorleyParsons congratulates Sophie on this significant achievement. As a leading provider of professional services to the resources and energy sectors and complex process industries, WorleyParsons understands that encouraging our engineers to reach the high standards of a chartered engineer provides a basis for ensuring technical integrity in the projects we deliver. Achieving Chartered Status is a recognition of the significant time and effort Sophie has dedicated to her career and professional development since graduating from her degree. WorleyParsons is proud of Sophie, and of all our Chartered Engineers, and looks forward to continuing to encourage and support more engineers like Sophie, as they strive to reach this important milestone in their professional development.” Grant Newberry MIEAust WorleyParsons Manager of Engineering – South Australia “Chartered Status verifies that the engineer gained professional competencies through professional experience. Although many engineers have degrees in engineering, science or mathematics, it is a requirement to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding for providing engineering services. For me the best way to demonstrate my level of experience was to assess my skills and knowledge level by a professional authority like Engineers Australia through the Chartered Status procedure. Grant Newbury MIEAust (Engineering Manager - South Australia) and Solmaz Sophie Sarabi MIEAust CPEng (WorleyParsons Electrical Engineer - South Australia).

I would like to thank Engineers Australia, Adelaide Office for providing high quality support and also WorleyParsons for creating a positive environment for their engineers to grow.” Sophie Sarabi MIEAust CPEng WorleyParsons Electrical Engineer - South Australia

ENGINEERING SOUTH AUSTRALIA

MEMBER PROFILE Marcelo Botelho TMIEAust CEngT Marcelo is a Chartered Engineering Technologist and Chair of the South Australia Division Branch of the Information, Telecommunication and Electronic Engineering (ITEE) College. Why did you decide to become an engineer? From a very early age I have been interested in science and technology. As a young boy I became very curious on how things worked and how they were constructed. This curiosity continued throughout my youth and lead me into my studies in the engineering field. Whilst studying I became interested in large engineering projects which lead me into electrical principles, electronics and communications engineering. What do you like the most about the engineering profession? It is dynamic, exciting and high risk, apart from the continuous challenge for perfection. Engineers have the ability to make things happen. If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose? I would have chosen the original NASA communications control centre during the Apollo program, at the time it was cutting edge technology. What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession? There is a shortage of engineers in Australia currently and a declining number of students to fill these positions. More needs to be done to encourage young students to embark in the engineering field. What is the greatest piece of technology released in the last decade? Mobile communications have evolved rapidly in the last several years. The “4G generation is driving life and comfort to a new level where you are now able to access numerous services, ultra-broadband internet, high definition TV and others services thanks to technology development.

Why are you an Engineers Australia member? I enjoy being a part of a big family that has great national and international recognition with a benchmark set and defined. At EA we have diversity in disciplines and colleges with a high level of competent professionals sharing experiences under a great membership. My experience and involvements with colleagues and my ITEE committee at EA are positive and proactive. We share knowledge, make plans and we are focussed on good positive outcomes to a wider membership, making the engineering community more involved and informed. If you could take a year off to study anything, what would it be? Learn German language in Europe. What do you feel is the engineering professions strongest asset? Engineers have the ability to work together to create technology that launches society into the future. What are your hobbies? Play social squash, motorcycle touring trips and play percussion in my spare time. What is your motto? Share information with others and learn new technologies and listen to good music. What would be your ideal working holiday? Be posted on a large size liner touring across the Bahamas and be responsible for the internal & external communications systems on board. Who would you most like to meet? I would like to meet Bill Gates.

Interested in getting involved? ...the call for nominations for vacant Division Committee, College Board and National Congress positions for 2013 will open on Monday 9 July 2012 and close on Friday 24 August 2012. Look out for the call for nominations and election advertisements on the web site at: www.engineersaustralia.org.au/elections This is your opportunity to not only benefit from an increased engineering network and to contribute to the governance of Engineers Australia, you will also have an opportunity to influence and to give something back to the profession.
