PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I recently attended the AGM for Engineers Australia in Canberra. This was a special event in which Engineers Australia acknowledged both Honorary Fellows and the recipient of the Peter Nicol Russell medal, Engineers Australia’s highest honour. I extend my congratulations to Professor Andrew Downing who received this special honour. Andrew is a proud engineer and proud South Australian who has been both the SA Division and National President. The award is just recognition of Andrew’s contribution to our profession. One of the Honorary Fellow recipients, Tony Dawson, made an impact on me. He has spent the majority of his career working for a consulting engineering firm and in receiving his award he drew attention to the experiences and opportunities that he had been given as a young engineer. The gift to a young engineer of the opportunity to solve problems and the drive of that young engineer to take the challenge is what produces the future leaders of our profession. Tony spoke of the opportunity coupled with the independence given to him to work independently. His comments were met with loud applause from the young engineers in the room and they prompted me to think back to the opportunities I have been given, opportunities that have made me the engineer I am today. I have had some great engineers to learn from over my career and they have all had one thing in common, the willingness to allow me to give things a go. From my first day in the office I was given space to work things out and try and find a solution, but always with support and always being able to ask a question and access the experience of those who were my supervisors. After working for 3 years I was given the opportunity to run the Mt Gambier office for a few months and, despite it occurring at a time that was very hard for our family, it proved one of the best opportunities I have had. From taking this opportunity on and succeeding, other opportunities followed. Ultimately, it has lead to me being South Australian Young Professional Engineer of the Year and the Managing Director of one of Adelaide’s consulting firms. I can’t thank enough the engineers who gave me those opportunities. Now as a manager, I am faced with the challenge of making sure I provide opportunities for others to grow and become great engineers. It has proved a difficult challenge, as in giving someone an opportunity you take on a risk, the risk that the project won’t be done as well as you might have hoped, or the risk that there may be some damage to your reputation. However, I firmly believe it is a risk worth taking. The young engineers of today will grow from the opportunities they are provided and the profession as a whole will grow from seeing how they take on the challenges.

I have also watched the new graduates I work with struggling with just how to take on the challenges that the opportunities to learn provide. Again, taking on a challenge comes with a risk, and the risk to the new graduate is that the challenge is more than they believe they are capable of meeting. However, I have seen that whenever they take the first step they go on to achieve great things. Of course, having an environment of support and a no blame culture are important ingredients together with the fact that there will always be experienced senior people there to help out are essential if new graduates are to gain confidence.

I believe the same is true of raising children. I am grateful to my parents, they gave me opportunities, believed I could succeed but also left it to me to make it happen. All the while, they were close enough that should I not be coping they were available. On many occasions my parents would drive me around the state for sporting events and let me do my thing, but the drive to train, to get better and to achieve what I wanted always had to come from me. I am now a father to five little boys and am acutely aware of the need to teach them that they are responsible for their ngineers Australia’s colleges and groups, as own well lives as and that their success will be determined by their ability and willingness to rise to the challenges life throws them. I also need to be their biggest fan and supporter.

For me, it was not a personal achievement but the achievements of my children; my 2 eldest children are both remarkable people and have already been honoured FIND OUT MORE FIND at their school forOUT the MORE character they display. Teaching my kids and working with my colleagues to grow them into leaders of the future, but also people of character, is my ambition.

GOOD TIMES, GOOD FOOD, GOOD COMPANY Over 70 guests attended the Annual Division Meeting (ADM) held on Thursday 1st December 2011 at Next Generation. The ADM highlighted some of the changeovers for the New Year, this included Immediate Past President David Cruickshanks-Boyd FIEAust EngExec handing over the role of President to Gerry Doyle MIEAust CPEng, and the announcement of the 2012 Division Committee. Wing Commander Tobyn Bearman FIEAust CPEng spoke about his six month experience in southern Afghanistan, sharing the delivery of infrastructure, agriculture and economic stability which were encountered. The successes of the year were reflected on and all guests were provided with a copy of the 2011 Year in Review, which highlighted the Division’s activities and successes for the year. A copy of this is also available for any interested members on the South Australia Division’s website, under our Resources section. After formalities, guests were invited to the outdoor pool area to commence the Christmas Networking Event. Here all enjoyed the sun, canapés, beverages and good company before wrapping up the year. After a stint in public service, Stewart joined the Credit Union Industry and was later elected as Chairman of Firefighters Credit Co-Operative Ltd. In 1993 he decided on a career change and joined the Country Fire Authority (CFA) as a firefighter. Stewart is now the Operations Manager of CFA District 23 based out of Wangaratta. He played a key operational role in the 2002/03 North East/Gippsland Fires, the USA fires of 2006, Great Divide Campaign fires of 2006/07 and was Incident Controller on Black Saturday 2009. Stewart has trekked the Kokoda Trail six times and has a passion developing leaders in our communities.

Why did you decide to become an engineer?

Why are you an Engineers Australia member?

I became an engineer because of the opportunity to come up with ideas, calculate, design and then see things happen. Luckily I was able to do this in acoustical consulting which interested me because of the technical nature of acoustics and the wide range of industries in which I work. What do you like the most about the engineering profession? I like the engineering profession because it is filled with people who are creative, innovative and have the skills to engineer solutions to help our world. If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose? The Sydney Opera House because it is iconic and is not known for its good acoustics. I could have helped to improve this landmark building. What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

I am a member because I believe that each day we should make the engineering profession better. The way I think we should do this is by working together. If you could take a year off to study anything, what would it be? I would love to study the health and economics of acoustics and the value that acoustics provides (related to our health and economically) to our world. What do you feel is the engineering professions strongest asset? The solid foundation of logical decision making. What are your hobbies? I am a keen cyclist & coffee drinker (& red wine ..)

I don’t believe that the engineering profession has successfully communicated to the broader community what we do and as a consequence we are often undervalued. If we were better valued then science and engineering may have greater sway in decision making (rather than popular politics).

Web based social media and knowledge sharing is the greatest technology released in the last decade. I believe this has and will shape and improve our world both in improved communities and better outcomes

Give knowledge freely. What would be your ideal working holiday? A world tour testing and cataloguing the environmental noise in cities and the natural environment. I would most like to meet Sir Isaac Newton and ask him how he achieved all his revolutionary theories.

SCIENCE ALIVE! 2012 An initiative of the SA Co-ordinating Committee for National Science Week Science Alive! 2012 will be the seventh year of this huge community event. It will run from Friday 10th August to Sunday 12th August in the Goyder Pavilion of the Adelaide Showground.
