PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Firstly, I would like to acknowledge a man who has had a profound impact on engineering, the community, business in South Australia and me. As most of you would be aware, BC (Skip) Tonkin passed away during April. Skip was a remarkable man who is remembered as a man of integrity and a true gentleman. Skip had done a multitude of amazing things in his life but to me the real measure of Skip was that everyone who knew him spoke of his integrity. In a time when the character of people is becoming less and less about honour, truth and integrity I found it exceptionally uplifting to know this engineer who lived a life of integrity. Skip was a remarkable man and his memory will live on in the lives of all the people he touched. As I sat down to write this I had just finished hearing about Craig Thompson’s address to parliament for about the third time. This came on the back of hearing about Peter Slipper’s court case and accusations that Isobel Redmond’s chief of staff resigned after being accused of leaking information to the media. And these people are the people we entrust to run our state and our country. I recently read an article which talked about the political problems we are having and proposed what I thought was quite an interesting solution. The proposal was that a maximum of two terms be permitted for any politician, thereby limiting involvement to a defined period, preventing people from becoming career politicians and hopefully increasing the candidate pool to include a greater amount of talent. The issue with this approach is a potential lack of continuity of ideas and potentially leads to never actually getting anything done. I found this an interesting solution to the problem because it looked to treat politics more in the manner that businesses treat Governance. There was an underlying assumption that public servants could be left to run the day to day activities and that the politicians would only need to provide monitoring, strategic direction and policy formulation. This proposed approach works in business by having a Board that adds value to the business through a diversity of opinions and views, strong culture and consistent turnover of members, to keep up the diversity and generation of new ideas.

In current politics, the culture cannot be called strong and there is an increasing number of politicians who have been part of the system for a long time or who are entering politics as though it is the professional career they will work in for 40 years. The lack of turnover of people who provide a diversity of opinions and new ideas is creating a governance problem for our society.
A similar governance issue faces many professional bodies at the moment - the volunteer pool is small and filled with long term volunteers. The question needs to be about how a wider pool can be engaged in a meaningful way. Over the past six months I have met with the Chairs of all EA groups in South Australia. In the most part these volunteers do a fantastic job and are keen to be involved in the development of EA in this state. However, most of them have also been in the chair for a long time or have been involved for a long time. One of the key challenges is to maintain a continuity of approach and ideas whilst continually engaging with the next group to Engineers Australia’s colleges groups, as well asopportunities available. take up theand roles, positions and

It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of Berwick (Skip) Carlyon Tonkin AM HonFIEAust CPEng. Skip passed away Wednesday 18th April 2012 in the company of his loving family. Skip became President of the South Australia Division in 1983 and National President of The Institution of Engineers Australia in 1989. In this role he worked to increase the Institution's profile to reflect the pervasiveness of engineering in almost all fields of endeavour and the role it should play on issues of national importance. Skip Tonkin built a successful South Australian enterprise by being innovative, by developing new solutions to local problems based upon world best practice and by building partnerships with clients based upon mutual trust and respect. Throughout his life he has been an exemplary member of the engineering profession at local, state and national levels. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. In July 2012 Engineers Australia is introducing major changes to the assessment process for Chartered Status and Registration, including for RPEQ. Targeting July Engineers Australia will launch eChartered, a new online system that will streamline the process for becoming Chartered and provide browser-based access linked to member information. eChartered will also be the launch-pad for the 2012 Australian Engineering Competency Standards Stage 2. The requirement for those applying for Chartered Status to be full and financial Members of Engineers Australia. Applicants will need to have Graduate or above membership to enrol.

Stage 1 competence to enrol can be demonstrated by Engineers Australia membership, a Stage 1 Competency Assessment, a Migration Skills Assessment, or a Permanent Resident letter from EA recognising accredited academic qualifications. This does not apply those enroling through a Mutual Recognition Agreement pathway.
7.
A change-over to the 2012 Australian Engineering Competency Standards Stage 2 for Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist and Engineering Associate. These will replace the current standards (as found in the Chartered Status Handbook and on the EA website).
8.
More consistent assessment through moderation at the point of assessment by allocating more than one Stage 2 Assessor to each application.
9.
A new style of writing evidence of competence through Engineering Competency Claims. These will replace Career Episode Reports (CERs).
10.
Online verification of Engineering Competency Claims and CVs.
11.
Online program management and reporting for PDP Coordinators.

Beautiful dresses, champagne and fine food all signalled that this was not your standard Engineers Australia event. The South Australian Women in Engineering Group ran its inaugural networking high tea at the Stamford Plaza on Saturday 21st April 2012. The event was a staggering success with almost sixty attendees and a fantastic presentation by Madge McGuire, CEO of Catherine House. The networking event was aimed at encouraging diversity and strengthening the women in our profession. Madge McGuire spoke on her work at Catherine House, a charity which supports women who are affected by homelessness for reasons other than domestic violence. Her presentation gave a great perspective and focus to the discussions that followed. Following the presentation, the WIE committee members lead each table in discussion on topics such as ‘When the tough get going’, ‘Busy lives and balance’ and ‘Pithy prose and clear chat’. Discussion topic such as ‘Busy lives and balance were broken down into question such as: How do you fit it all in? What do you compromise? What do you prioritise? What services do you use (cleaning, nannies, etc) to make life work? How do you fit exercise in? From all of these questions what works best and why? Participants came from a broad range of fields, ages and career stages which made for interesting and stimulating conversation. The committee has received many compliments on the discussion topics and their running of the afternoon. Another highlight of the afternoon was the fantastic food provided by the Stamford Plaza. All participants enjoyed fine champagne and delicious savoury and sweet treats. Well over $600 was raised for the Catherine House Charity. The afternoon was emceed by Rachel Harch GradIEAust and thanks go to Kathleen Manuel GradIEAust and Libby Vojin GradIEAust and the entire committee for running the event. YEA-SA APRIL INDUSTRY NETWORKING NIGHT Sinclair Knight Merz sponsored Young Engineers Australia - South Australia’s (YEA-SA) second Industry Networking Night for 2012 on the 24th April. The night was attended by approximately 100 people at the Elephant British Pub. The purpose of these evenings is to provide attendees with an opportunity to network with members of industry as well as their peers. The venue provided a relaxed atmosphere that enabled the undergraduates and graduates to comfortably network on the night. SKM was represented by Daryll Pain (BAIF Team Leader Structural), Brittany Coff MIEAust CPEng (Water and Environmental Engineer) and June Sim GradIEAust (Graduate Environmental Engineer). SKM’s State Manager Greg Walters FIEAust CPEng EngExec also attended and was supported by SKM graduates from each of their engineers departments. Daryll was able to provide attendees with an insight into the type of projects SKM are typically involved in. Examples of projects included those from each of the Buildings and Infrastructure, Water and Environment, Power and Energy and Mining and Metals departments. The Adelaide Botanic Gardens and McArthur Wind Farm projects were showcased illustrating SKM’s design capability. A short presentation was also given on the recent Western Australia Iron Ore project at Nelson Point epitomizing SKM’s ability to deliver projects to large scale clients such as BHP. When asked about the importance of Chartered Status to SKM Greg said that “Achieving CPEng and being eligible to be placed on the National Professional Engineering Register is an important milestone in every professional engineer’s career. It proves that you are competent, capable and current. We are very proud of what Daniel and Joe have achieved.” The South Australia Division also asked Daniel and Joe to share a little on their thoughts about achieving this milestone.
Daniel advised he felt that “The Engineers Australia chartered process appeared at face value to be a daunting task, however once I started writing my first Career Episode Report with the support of SKM and Engineers Australia the process was relatively straight forward. I recommend that anyway who is yet to start the process prepare a draft CER for review. It was the catalyst I needed to complete the program.” Joe said regarding the achievement “Being recognised as a competent professional engineer by Engineers Australia is an important milestone in my career. I have been grateful for the support provided by SKM and Engineers Australia throughout this process and recommend that anyone who has not done so take the steps to becoming a chartered professional engineer.” Sinclair Knight Merz is a leading projects firm, with global capability in strategic consulting, engineering and project delivery. MEMBER PROFILE Fay Nunn MIEAust Fay Nunn is the current South Australia representative for the Women in Engineering National Committee. Why did you decide to become an engineer? Because I like science and problem solving and engineering is a way to do both. It is always changing and has held my interest. What do you like the most about the engineering profession? That I share the values and ethics of the other engineers I meet. We all seem to love to learn, help solve problems and fundamentally want to do a good job. If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose? The electrification of London because in the process of doing this work there would have been new approaches developed and lots of practical problem solving. What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession? As a consultant the ‘race to the bottom’ in terms of professional fees earned for design work. As our clients expect to pay less for our services I feel that they value our services less. The amount of work that is invisible to the client but contributes to the success of the design is increasing. This drop in fees has driven some innovation out of necessity but it may lead to ‘vanilla‘ designs as companies strip back what is delivered to suit the fee paid. This concerns me as true design that produces new ideas is an iterative process and may not survive in a lean fee environment.
What is the greatest piece of technology released in the last decade? The modern form of the internet world wide web. It’s ability to share knowledge is profound. The ability for individuals to contribute and get feedback from others across the world that they perhaps will never meet has been revolutionary. Why are you an Engineers Australia member? To be involved with the networks that EA supports. Because I believe that EA can bring engineers together from all the diverse places in which we work. I have really enjoyed being a part of the Women in Engineering community which is a collection of amazingly positive and proactive women with lots of ideas that are readily shared. Meeting these people has made me realise how enriched the engineering community has been by their presence and involvement. What do you feel is the engineering professions strongest asset? Our shared enthusiasm and drive. It is amazing what happens when we work together. What is your motto? Learn something new every day.
