President’s Report Meet new Management Committee Members - Carolyn Gertz - Prof. David Lilley Award Presentation Ken Grattan Excellence Awards Entries now open Update from Hays Recruitment Gala Dinner National Assessor for Northern Territory Calendar of Events
President’s Report Welcome to another year, which already promises to be as hectic and interesting as the past couple of years. This is the year of Engineering Leadership in which we will showcase our past, present and emerging leaders. It would be good to showcase a number of our own NT past, present and future leaders in our upcoming divisional newsletters, so please let us know of anyone you think would be appropriate to highlight and I'm sure we can arrange to have them showcased locally and hopefully nationally in EA magazine. The Gala dinner isn't very far off so please start thinking about buying tickets and securing tables. If you haven't been to one in the past you really must come along to see what you've been missing out on. I'm sure everyone who has attended the past couple of Gala dinners will support me in saying that these functions keep getting bigger and better each year, they really are a fun event. On behalf of all our members I would like to thank, our past president, Peter Hagen for all his hard work over the past two years. I would also like to congratulate Dave McHugh on being elected to EA National Council. We are extremely fortunate in having EA National Assessor Chris Jenkins moving to Darwin this year. Chris plans to stay in Darwin for a year or so, which will be a great opportunity for our members seeking chartered status in the near future. I'm sure Bronwyn and Karen will have more information on Chris's plans in the near future. There are still a number of positions open on the Management Committee, namely a Heritage representative and an Engineering Associate representative. I would urge people to volunteer for these positions, they don't take up a lot of your time, and believe me you get a lot more out of it than you put in. We also have vacancies for remote area representatives in Katherine, Jabiru and Groote Eylandt.

This enabled Carolyn to work Structural Engineer (FIStructE), Chartered Civil Engineer (FICE) on a variety of exciting industrial projects, including undertaking and a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (FIMechE). I am currently a the project leader role QAL’s HV reticulation upgrade, the electrimember of IStructE Council, and have served on numerous IS- cal design lead role for the RG Tanna Coal Terminal Berth 4 and tructE Committees and Panels. I am hoping to use my IStructE third outloading stream expansion and Wiggins Island Coal terexperience to help with developments within Engineers Austra- minal project (where she was responsible for electrical design for lia. the Gantry Stacker and Shiploader). Before joining CDU, I was Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering at the University of Newcastle, UK. I was at Newcastle for more than 27 years, where I taught structural analysis and design to undergraduate students at all stages in BEng and MEng Degrees in Civil and Structural Engineering, and to postgraduate MSc students. I am developing several aspects of structural engineering at CDU, and have initially taken over teaching in two Units at advanced undergraduate/postgraduate level: Structural Analysis and Integrated Civil Engineering Design. With a wide variety of research interests, I will be focussing on issues which are of major interest within Northern Territory. These include loading effects on structures and buildings from extreme wind events, and post-disaster recovery. In the past my research and consultancy work was generally related to particular problems which came to my attention through industrial and professional contacts. Recent projects with which I have been involved include train-generated vibration of railway bridges, analysis and design of ship-board cranes for offshore use, investigation of causes of numerous spontaneous failures of toughened glass in a canopy roof, design of towers to support wind turbines, design check of glazed frames, and analysis and design checks of Vierendeel frames supporting glazed canopies.
Carolyn also has a keen interest in Electrical Equipment for Hazardous areas, having obtained AS 4761 competencies in this area – for design, area classification and also inspection. She has also maintained her Qld Electrical Safety office auditor accreditation for EEHA inspection. Graduating from Sydney University in 1991, Carolyn’s career has taken her all over Australia. Starting as a graduate with BHP Engineering (now Hatch) at the beginning of 1992 saw Carolyn involved in projects in diverse locations including the rolling mills at BHP Steel Whyalla, GEMCO Groote Eylandt and the Coil Coating line project at Alcoa’s Point Henry Smelter. It was on this project (in 1994) that she met her husband of 11 years, Paul. Following a transfer to the Hot Strip Mill reautomation project at BHP Westernport Vic, Paul and Carolyn moved to BHP Iron Ore’s Mt Whaleback mine in Newman, WA, where Carolyn took up roles in the Engineering Services department, then Field Maintenance. Following a brief stint with Brisbane-based water and wastewater consultancy JWP, Carolyn moved to Connell Wagner (now Aurecon) in August of 2000. There she spent 12 months in the Brisbane office, working on the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Stages 5 and 6 expansions, before taking the opportunity to move to Gladstone in 2001.
In her spare time, Carolyn is a keen gym-goer and fitness enthusiast and dabbles in bodybuilding – having competed in her I am hoping that local engineers will want to make contact first competition in May 2008. She also loves to spend time on the if they need help or advice in solving a particular structural engi- weekends cooking up a storm in the kitchen, and is hoping to be able to do more travel around the NT and Asia (since it’s so close) neering problem or issue. in the coming year.

Chief Minister presents Public Sector Award to Ken Grattan
Ken Grattan receiving award from Chief Minister, Hon. Paul Henderson From the former Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Mr Ken Grattan is awarded the 2009 Chief Minister’s Public Sector Medal for his outstanding and meritorious service to road design and planning in the Northern Territory. Mr Grattan is the Director, Network Development in the Road Network Division. For over four decades, Mr Grattan has earned the reputation as a man of integrity, intelligence, determination and imagination. Ken’s work as a road planner has been instrumental in the development of the Territory in particular the urban arterial roads in Palmerston and Darwin. His skills and expertise have also ensured the Territory’s road networks will continue to serve the community well in decades to come. His long term strategic vision for the Territory’s road network will be a lasting legacy. He has been involved in countless road projects but the one project that exemplifies Mr Grattan is his involvement with Tiger Brennan Drive. Ken has been involved in this long term project since its inception in the 1970s. From day one, it was planned that Tiger Brennan Drive would ultimately be a six-lane highway, linking Darwin and Palmerston. In the ensuing years, the project has progressed incrementally to keep pace with development and population. Work started recently on Stage Two of the $110 million Tiger Brennan Drive extension; one of the most significant road projects in the Territory’s history.
