March 2012 Eng-Zone: Engineers Australia Sydney Division's e-newsletter sent to you monthly with news and details of activities around Engineers Australia.

Engineering Competency The Engineering Profession manages many important issues within our society. Issues that if are not properly planned, designed, constructed and managed they can have disastrous consequences potentially causing physical injury, loss of life and multi-billion dollar liability. It is imperative that society has confidence in the competency of those who call themselves Professional Engineers and confidence in the knowledge, ethics, skill and practical experience of those who operate within the Profession.

Engineers Australia is pleased to announce 2012 is the Year of the Regional Engineering Team, a year which will highlight regional Australia as the heart of engineering.

Congratulations ! We would like to congatulate the following Engineers Australia Sydney Division members who have been appointed with Chartered (CPEng) Status during February 2012. New Chartered Members Philip James Byrum Matthew Michael Deery Nadeem Farooqui Jason Anthony Lee Satcunananthara Thinesh Barry Crowley Simon John Ellis Rachael Helen Lindup Maryna Tov Franco Sicari

These concepts are the foundation of being a Chartered Engineer and having the right to use the post nominal CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer). The distinction of being Chartered implies an ability and a competency in being able to deliver sound, safe, ethical and responsible engineering solutions into the public arena. In addition to Chartered status, specialisation in a specific engineering discipline can be recognised by registration on one of Engineers Australia National Engineering Registers, which demonstrates minimum professional competency in a particular engineering area of practice. There is no better judge and jury than one’s peers, and no better group within our society to assess engineering competence than other Professional Engineers – hence the importance of professional development and assessment within Engineers Australia’s competency based assessment system. Becoming Chartered with Engineers Australia is a complex process of review of training, experience, achievement, practice of ethical standards and demonstration of practical application of theory in a responsible manner. While complex, the process is about to become more streamlined in the form of eChartered which, as a web based system, will deliver a more accessible process for documenting the achievement of required competencies for becoming Chartered. eChartered will more align with contemporary engineering standards. The online competency documentation process will retain the peer review, the professional interview process to achieve Chartered status. While streamlining and refining the process, eChartered will not reduce the rigour or depth of assessment leading to Chartered recognition. Similarly, application for registration on the National Professional Engineering Register will also be applicable under the eChartered system. The system of eChartered will be fully operational by the 1st July 2012 and make the process of both Chartered Application and registration on a National Register more accessible, streamlined and efficient.
