PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Sydney Division Key Sponsors
Storytelling – sharing our vision for the future I had the privilege of attending the EEA Engineering Leadership Residential course in October, along with a variety of talented and passionate engineering professionals from across Australia. We were led by an enthusiastic team of facilitators and motivated by a selection of eminent engineering leaders. But it was often the personal stories of both success and failure that inspired us all to stand up, have a go, and continue to meet the challenges of our engineering and leadership careers. As engineers we must be able to effectively communicate our vision, our message, our engineering solutions to community, government and industry. While relating a story of historical events can be helpful, being able to create a narrative to express a vision of a better future can be transformational. My encouragement is for all engineers to learn the art of storytelling, and to make the most of technology to do so. As someone who’s often observed the world through a camera lens I’m well aware that a picture is worth a thousand words – so then how much more powerful are videos for communicating our message? Engineers Australia’s Strategic Plan (20102015) expresses “our preferred future” in the context of engagement and trust from our community – where our community will look to our members to create engineering solutions for a sustainable future, and where EA will ensure that the standards for engineering practice are world-class. To achieve this vision for our future we must continue to evolve our structure and organisation, enable improved collaboration, improved engagement with politicians and government,
improved communication of our message through a variety of media channels – and all ensuring an appropriate focus at a national, state and local level. Engineers Australia is working towards making the organisation more relevant, more agile, better attuned to the diversity of engineering, and better able to translate worthy ideas into effective outcomes. The future of engineering in Australia is also reliant on attracting the next generation of engineers. STEM skills and qualifications are needed, which cover Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – and the importance of English subjects cannot be overemphasised. Existing programmes aimed at attracting school students to a career in engineering include Discover Engineering Days, a Summer School and Autumn School, EngQuest and Neighbourhood Engineers linking engineers with schools, the Great Engineering Challenge, amongst others. Ongoing promotion, support and participation in these programmes is critical. Be prepared to get involved, tell your story, and help create the vision needed for our future. It was welcoming to see the State Infrastructure Strategy report released by Nick Greiner from Infrastructure New South Wales. The report proposes a 20 year program, costing $30 billion, to improve the infrastructure of NSW, and to those who know how desperate the condition of our state’s infrastructure has become this was viewed with bated breath. As one example, currently we have the M4 Motorway dumping its payload into a suburban street (Parramatta Road) and the M5 as occupying the top of the morning radio hit parade of traffic jams. When we speak of carbon foot print, the biggest contributor in Sydney is jammed traffic idling engines, time, petrol and diesel in an elongated car park. It’s imperative that these two motorways are unclogged – and from an engineering point of view it’s not difficult. No modern city in the world would tolerate a motorway dumping its traffic into a street – and the M4 was never designed to do that, it was just never finished. The title of the State Infrastructure Strategy 2012 – 2032 is “First things first” and in that respect it’s addressing the issues which have the greatest priority. It proposes a $10 billion project over 10 years called WestConnex which fundamentally connects the M4 and M5 while picking up egress from Sydney airport and Port Botany. In addition to metropolitan road transport the report also covers regional NSW with a $300 million “Bridges for the Bush” program, State rail, harbour and airport infrastructure, and State energy, water and social infrastructure. New South Wales is choking from its malnourished infrastructure, and if we’re to remain the Premier State then it’s essential that we free up the congestion, conclude the talking and just get on with it. Electrical & ITEE branch half day seminar – Cyber Security The Electrical and ITEE Engineering Branch of Sydney Division organised its yearly half day seminar on Wednesday 10 October at Sydney Division Auditorium in Chatswood. The topic was on “Cyber Security”, an important subject impacting on individuals, businesses and governments. Parallel with the Internet and the telecommunications technology becoming more and more sophisticated revolutionising the way we conduct business and our personal lives by obliterating distances and providing rich sources of information at our finger tips to allow us to achieve our tasks faster and more economically, is the increasing threat of computer viruses and hacking, which could destroy our telecommunications and computer based systems that we have now become very dependent on. A panel of five expert speakers presented at the seminar covering a wide range of related topics such as: • Information warfare and the sometimes blurring lines between cybercrime and cyber warfare and the serious risks of interconnected
networks (cloud); • The Australian & International Standards guidelines on cyber security techniques; • How, through better Planning, Preparing, Responding and Recovering (PPRR), organisations become more resilient to malicious and nonmalicious anomalies when around 90% of these anomalies occur due to software upgrades and human errors; and • The types of threats in relation to Product Vulnerabilities, System Misconfiguration, Insider Threats and Social Engineering and the fundamental issue of trustworthiness. All attendees were impressed with the topics and the quality of presentations and have expressed their appreciation to the organiser. WIE eminent speakers breakfast “Leadership in the 21st Century” Women in Engineering (WIE) Sydney Division held its annual Eminent Speakers Breakfast on 11 October at Shangri-la Hotel, Sydney. Approximately 190 attendees braved the rain and cold morning to hear from three guest speakers on the style of leadership in the early 21st century environment. Shelley Roberts, Executive Director Aviation Services at Sydney Airport, started the talk on “command and control” models of leadership moving towards a collaborative style. She associated leadership with having a toolbox and skill sets needed to solve problems depending on the situation. Leaders need to understand the problem and the operating environment. She emphasised on knowing when and how to get help and explained the Conscious Competent Ladder where she learnt to move from WIE Scholarship 2012 winners Susan Botross and Haarsha Raha (1st and 2nd from left) with Gillian Pak (WIE Committee) “unconsciously incompetent” and Brendyn Williams (EA Sydney Division President). to “unconsciously competent”. In a situation where there is a difference in opinions, she would judge if it was due to a difference in leadership style or balance between family and career and she advised to be in the moment principle and would take action accordingly. She advised that leaders need and enjoy what you are doing at the time. She observed that working women to set strategic context so that their followers can understand the issues or do give up a lot in their lives but the rewards were significant. “Put in the hard problems that they are trying to solve. Lastly she advised the attendants to effort” is definitely her call as she said that you never know where you’ll end “raise your hand” and try something different because “you never know until up. you’ve tried”.
