Tomorrow’s Leadership
I remember when I interviewed for my first management role and was asked to define the difference between management and leadership. While at the time my response was based on theory that I had studied, my career has since shown me quite clearly what the differences are, in that many great managers are not necessarily great leaders. So what does make a great leader? Try putting that in your Google search engine and uncover the wealth of studies, research and opinions that abound on this topic. However one point that is made fairly frequently is that leadership styles need to change and evolve to meet the future demands of global economies. The styles that are being favoured are the more nurturing, collaborative and flexible leadership styles, which are qualities more generally attributed to women. Recently at the Women In Engineering (WIE) winter gala dinner, the guest speaker Prof Mary O’Kane spoke of the qualities women bring into their leadership roles, such as their likeliness to make more risk averse decisions and that for some companies this has brought about great benefits. Studies have also shown that boards with 2-3 women have had greater success. So this brings me to the topic of our October Annual breakfast- “Leadership in the 21st Century”. Our panel consists of both male and females in senior leadership roles speaking from their own experiences and projecting their thoughts on the future. View further details and Register here. While on the topic of leadership, elections for WIE committee will be held on 8 Nov 12 and I would really urge all engineering women to be involved. Each year our program grows and improves and this is only achieved by fresh input, so come along to our AGM and look out for our call for nominations. Julie Mikhail MIEAust Chair, WIE Sydney Division
NEWS Update on eChartered progress Engineers Australia's new online application and assessment system, eChartered, is progressing and is now in the final testing stages. We have however experienced some issues during testing of multiple users accessing the system which has meant that we are now targeting late October, revised from our target date of late September, for our official launch of eChartered. We are committed to delivering a world class system and apologise for the delay - we will provide ongoing updates via our regular channels and via the Engineers Australia website at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/echartered Engineers Australia reaffirms support for registration of engineers
