ENGLISH LACROSSE HOST THE 2017 FIL RATHBONES WOMEN’S LACROSSE WORLD CUP AT SURREY SPORTS PARK 12TH-22ND JULY

THE UK’S LARGEST FEMALE SPORTING EVENT IN 2017

FIL World Lacrosse The FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup will be the largest elite women’s sporting event in the UK in 2017 and it will be, by some margin, the largest Women’s Lacrosse World Cup ever. The 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup will be the tenth in the series, the third to be hosted by England and will have almost 30 teams participating – nearly 50% larger than the 2013 event in Oshawa, Canada. The event has grown slowly over the 35 years since its inception in 1982, when England hosted six countries (Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, United States and Wales) at the inaugural World Cup in Nottingham. The FIL Rathbones Women’s World Lacrosse Cup will be hosted at Surrey Sports Park, Guildford between July 12th and 22nd 2017. The current World Champions are Team USA, defeating Canada 19-5 in the final in 2013. In addition to the main World event, it has become tradition to host a Festival of Lacrosse for travelling community teams to compete in. The 2017 World Festival will welcome over 500 lacrosse players to compete in the auxiliary event.

Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) The Federation of International Lacrosse has a vision for Lacrosse to be played world-wide and achieve Olympic inclusion. The geographic development of Lacrosse has steadily increased over recent years with new Lacrosse playing nations including Uganda and China. The Federation of International Lacrosse has recently been appointed a member of SportAccord and is included in the International World Games Association.

World Lacrosse Lacrosse was started by the Native American Indians and was originally known as stickball. The game was initially played in the St. Lawrence Valley area by the Algonquian tribe and they were followed by other tribes in the eastern half of North America, and around the western Great Lakes. St. Leonards School, in St Andrews, Scotland claims to be the first girls’ school to have played lacrosse in 1890. The first Headmistress, Miss Lumsden, watched a game played in Canada, in 1884, between the Canghuwaya Indians and the Montreal Club, in Montreal and thought it “beautiful and graceful.” Lacrosse is now played around the world with 52 countries currently being full or associate members of The Federation of International Lacrosse

(FIL). At the top level, women’s lacrosse is played by elite athletes. Their training regimes are demanding and time consuming, just the same as other elite athletes but, unlike many sports today, women’s lacrosse is still almost exclusively, and proudly amateur. The women who compete at international level give up time, money, a real life, just in order to represent their countries. The result is spectacular. A fast, athletic, and highly skilful game that is exciting to watch, even if you don’t know all the rules. There are no points for style, none for artistic interpretation, the team who scores the most goals wins. It couldn’t be simpler.

Broadcast and Media

Broadcast & Media Lacrosse is a professional sport in the USA and as such attracts a significant TV audience in the North American market. Negotiations with broadcasters are still underway; however, the event will receive broadcast exposure in the European and North American markets. Worldwide web streaming will also be provided for all World Cup games. England v USA live stream in July 2016 attracted 5,500 views. Social media channels offer a combined fan reach of over 210,000.

FAN FEST The 2017 FANFEST area will be open to the public, as well as 2017 spectators. This will extend the exposure of the game to 10,000 Surrey Sports Park visitors each week. The FanFest will allow spectators and bystanders the opportunity to experience a taste of the 2017 World Cup. The 2017 FanFest will be located in two areas of the site. One, in a small car park illustrated on the image as ‘Food and Drink’ and the second, in a 20m by 10m marquee which all spectators will enter to visit the box office. The entrance to the stadium and wider pitches will also be accessed through the Fanfest tent. We are seeking a wide range of stalls and entertainment for the area.
