Get Ready for Leagues and Tournaments this Fall Dodgeball, Flag Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, & more.

Academy Sports Complex (ASC), 3527 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale, recently celebrated its grand opening with members of the community showing support for the new indoor sports facility. ASC offers indoor practice and training for all field sports. The complex includes three diverse indoor turf fields to accommodate a full infield practice for baseball and softball teams, as well as for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby and football teams to run practices and training sessions. ASC also has seven of the largest hitting/pitching cages in the area. The cages feature pitching machines that use leather-wrapped balls. Teams are able to use the facility to train and practice year-round. When it is too cold, too warm, too wet, too windy or too dark outside, ASC aims to offer an ideal climate. For more information, readers may call 484-288-8033 or visit www.academysportspa.com.

The 11th annual Caln Community Day, presented by Hatt's True Value Hardware and the Downingtown Library, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 3 to 8:30 p.m. in Municipal Park, located off Municipal Drive and G.O. Carlson Boulevard in Thorndale. Organizers note that this year's event will be better than ever with music, vendors, a beer garden, food and a variety of activities for people of all ages. Community Day will offer a photo booth, a miniature golf course, moon bounces and KnockerBall, a popular soccer-type game where players are encased in giant inflatable spheres. Representatives from KnockerBall West Chester will present the activity, and they will also bring other games to the event, including giant pong and foot darts. There will also be a car smash, where attendees can take a sledge hammer to a car for a donation. All proceeds will benefit the Jacinda Miller Memorial Fund. The live band that will perform throughout Community Day this year will be Project X. Community Day will also feature a golf ball drop. Up to 1,000 balls will be dropped from a Thorndale Fire Company ladder truck. The “owner” of the ball closest to the pin will win $1,000; the second closest will win $500. This year, participants need not be present to win. Proceeds from the ball drop will help fund next year's Community Day. Tickets are available for purchase at the Caln Township Municipal Building, 253 Municipal Drive, Thorndale, and at Ingleside Golf Course, 104 Horseshoe Trail, Thorndale. The grand finale of Community Day will be a fireworks show sponsored by Brandywine Hospital. For more information about Caln Community Day, readers may contact Abbey Swan, Caln Township community outreach specialist, at aswan@calntownship.org or visit www.calntownship.org/ community-day.html or www.facebook.com/CalnCommunityDay.

Caln Officials Visit

Calne, England

Caln Township Police Sgt. Kevin Bernard visited with children during National Night Out on Aug. 1. The annual community event, hosted by the Caln Township Police Department, included police, K-9 and fire department demonstrations, along with community safety information, a prescription drug drop-off station, a live band, food and refreshments.

Since 1982, Caln Township has been "twinned" with the town of Calne in Wiltshire, England, where Caln's first settlers originated. For the past 35 years, twinning committees from both countries have organized trips and activities to deepen the special relationship. This summer, representatives from Caln Township, including township board of commissioners president Jennifer Breton, Caln Township manager Kristen Denne and Caln Twinning Committee chair Barry Beech, visited Calne. They were hosted by members of the Calne twinning group, who arranged a full schedule of tours and events. On the first day of the visit, the group members took part in a memorial service for Tom DiFroscia, former chair of the Caln twinning group. They also participated in shopping excursions and tours of the area and sampled food from various restaurants. Those interested in learning more about the trip may read Breton’s detailed blog at http://calnpatocalneuk.weebly.com. The Caln twinning group is always looking for new members who are interested in hosting, planning, traveling and building relationships with the twinning committee in England. To learn more, readers may contact info@calntownship.org.

Township Offers

Chipping, Leaf Collection Caln Township will continue to offer its fall chipping program for large branches. The service is only intended for cleaning up fallen branches and not for items cut down by a contractor. Each scheduled appointment will be limited to 15 minutes and will be strictly enforced. In order to accommodate the limited number of appointments, township residents who have more than 15 minutes’ worth of chipping are asked to call a contractor for removal. Caln Township residents may call 610-384-0600, ext. 140, on Friday, Sept. 1, through Friday, Sept. 29, to schedule a chipping appointment. Slots are limited. Items placed at the curb that are not covered by the program, as well as an excess volume of material, will not be chipped. Branches must be no longer than 6 inches in diameter. All branches must be neatly stacked curbside (no cross-stacking) and with cut ends facing the street by 6 a.m. on the day of the appointment. However, it is recommended the branches be placed at the curb the night before the appointment. Road crews will not drive onto property or private lanes/roadways, nor will road crews go beyond the edge of the property to collect the branches. No stumps will be picked up. Branches greater than 6 inches in diameter will not be accepted. Vines, weeds, leaves or yard waste will not be collected. Incorrectly stacked piles will not be picked up, and no late setouts or oversized piles will be accepted. The program is for routine cleanup and not designed to assist with clearing properties of trees and shrubs. The program is for individual PUBLISHED BY ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.

Caln Township residential properties only. A resident may use this service one time during the program period. Items collected from outside the township or through a private or commercial operation will not be processed. Leaf vacuuming will begin the week of Monday, Oct. 30. Rather than bagging leaves, residents need only rake them to the front of their property immediately adjacent to the road's edge. Leaves must be as close to the road's edge as possible and not obstructed by vehicles. Homeowners should not rake leaves into the street, as the leaves could get washed into storm inlets or freeze to the roadway during inclement weather. For Monday and Tuesday trash customers, leaf vacuuming will be offered the weeks of Oct. 30 and Monday, Nov. 13. For Wednesday and Thursday trash customers, leaf vacuuming will be the weeks of Monday, Nov. 6, and Monday, Nov. 27. No appointments are necessary for the leaf vacuuming service. One final township-wide cleanup will take place the week of Monday, Dec. 4. Besides leaf vacuuming, Eagle Disposal will again collect leaves that are placed at the curb in biodegradable bags as part of the Yard Waste Collection Program.
