Community Day
Caln Parks
To Feature Family Fun
Caln Township has four major parks with amenities that are available to the public. Caln Municipal Park, a 20-acre park located off of Municipal Drive, is a community park that offers many recreational activities. Baseball games organized through the Caln Athletic Association are active throughout the year on lighted ballfields. The park also has two large pavilions, rest rooms and play areas for small children. Recently, with the help of state and county grants, the township constructed new tennis courts, a new picnic pavilion, a roller hockey rink, and a large play structure and made other improvements to the park. The picnic pavilions may be reserved by calling the township office at 610-384-0600, ext. 120. There are separate nonrefundable permit fees for residents and for nonresidents. A refundable security deposit is required. Tennis players can obtain a key for the tennis courts by paying a fee at the Municipal Building. Lloyd Park is a 30-acre park located off of Lloyd Avenue. It is mostly used for passive recreation purposes. It includes some play equipment, t wo sand v olleyball courts, walking trails, a gazebo structure and a canine area for four-legged friends. The 20-acre Caln Park West includes a combination soccer/baseball field and play equipment. It is located on Route 340 near the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dawkins Park is a small neighborhood park in the Brandywine Homes section of the township. It contains play equipment, a picnic pavilion and a basketball court. The township owns several other open space properties and has created an open space fund to secure donations and grants to acquire additional open space and park properties.

The ninth annual Caln Community Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature activities for all ages, including live entertainment, food, a children’s area and more. New attractions this year will include a chicken barbecue, a photo booth, an appearance by the Brandywine YMCA Activan and a softball game at 2 p.m. that will pit local police officers against the fire department. Returning activities will include pony rides, a petting zoo, balloon art and a smoke/fire safety house. Local business vendors will have displays, and there will be food and beverages available to purchase. A dunk tank will be set up as well, and attendees may try to dunk their favorite local celebrity. Proceeds will benefit the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Company. Hexagonal Schoolhouse
Symbolizes Caln History
The Hexagonal Schoolhouse on Municipal Drive is a historically significant building in Caln Township. The township even uses a graphic of the schoolhouse as part of its official seal. Located at the corner of Municipal Drive and G.O. Carlson Boulevard, the schoolhouse was built around 1837 by Richard and Mary Edge Pim, members of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. They constructed the stone schoolhouse to begin the education of their nine children. The lower level of the schoolhouse served as the family’s springhouse, keeping milk and other foods cool. A hired teacher taught their young children and neighboring cousins on the main level of the schoolhouse. The six-sided design of the building was incorporated to take full advantage of all available light as the sun progressed from east to west. The small wood stove, which warmed the children in the cold months, provided the smoke needed to “smoke” and cure the meats on the top floor. The 75-ton building, with a small belltower on its roof, was originally situated on the Pims’ 192-acre farm, located on present-day Edge Lane. When that property was sold to a developer in the late 1960s, the school was moved to its present location. In 1971, the Hexagonal Schoolhouse was entered in the Pennsylvania Registry of Historic Sites. Members of the Old Caln Historical Society and the Caln Township Historical Commission will give free guided tours of the building on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. Reservations are not required. For details, readers may call 610-384-8153. Individuals are asked to park at the Caln Township Municipal Building rather than streetside.
The Hexagonal Schoolhouse on Municipal Drive in Caln was built around 1837 and served as a school for Quaker children.

The Old Caln Meeting House, located at Caln Meetinghouse Road and East Kings Highway, is the oldest building in Caln Township. The meeting house has been a place of worship for Quakers, or members of The Religious Society of Friends of the Truth, for nearly three centuries. The building was constructed in 1726. The east room was added in 1801 to accommodate quarterly meetings held by Quakers from the surrounding region. According to www.oldcalnmeeting house.org, the meeting house’s stone walls were made entirely by hand; every stone in Old Caln was individually gathered from local fields and lifted into place. The original floors were made of white oak more than an inch thick. The interior walls, sliding panels, chair rails and benches were constructed primarily of poplar. Surrounding the building is a historic graveyard. Since Quakers are discouraged from installing elaborate grave stones or monuments of any kind over the graves of their loved ones, graves were often marked with simple field stones with a name and date or nothing at all. With graves spanning over the past 300 years, many

Today, the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is maintained by a board of trustees, all of whom are Quakers, and the Old Caln Historical Society. The west room of the building is used as a museum to house archives, artifacts and other historical memorabilia that have been collected by the historical society. More information about the building is available at www.oldcalnmeetinghouse.org. The meeting house will be open on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. for free tours guided by members of the Old Caln Historical Society and the Caln Township Historical Commission.
