One On One With Jared Mees Ride To Support Four Diamonds After Dustin Smith graduated from Hempfield High School in 2007, he was excited to head to the University of Central Florida to study electrical engineering. “He was very, very smart, and he was excited to be taking some advanced courses. During that first week of classes, he called me and said he didn’t feel good,” said Dustin’s mother, Christine Hogan. “He was a gamer, and he said that he couldn’t even play games because his hands weren’t feeling right.” Susquehanna Indian Hogan urged Dustin to go to the campus Motorcycle Riders Group 1903, infirmary, and from there he was admitted based out of Hernley’s Polarisinto a hospital in Orlando. “He had surgery Indian Motorcycle in that night because they found a grapefruitElizabethtown, will host a sized tumor on his brain,” recalled Hogan, One on One With Jared Mees who was able to fly to Orlando to be with her motorcycle ride and dinner on son. Dustin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarJuly 20. Mees is the 2018 coma, a rare type of cancer that typically American Flat Track champion. affects people ages 10 to 20. He returned to
Pennsylvania to receive treatment at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. After a courageous battle, Dustin passed away on Christmas Day in 2011 at age 23. “We were so fortunate to live near Hershey. Everyone there is absolutely wonderful. Their staff was so accommodating, and they really treat the whole person,” Hogan remarked. Four Diamonds helped to cover Dustin’s medical expenses that were not covered by insurance, and now Hogan continues to raise money to give back to Four Diamonds and pay it forward in any way that she can. Hogan is part of the Susquehanna Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG) 1903, a nonprofit motorcycle riding group based out of Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle in Elizabethtown. Susquehanna IMRG 1903 has been fundraising solely for Four Diamonds for the past three years through silent auctions and holiday cake roll sales, and now the
group is hosting a special motorcycle ride to benefit Four Diamonds and its efforts to support local cancer patients and their families. On Saturday, July 20, the community is invited to a One on One With 2018 American Flat Track champion Jared Mees. Spots are limited to 50 motorcycles to take part in an exclusive ride that will begin and end at Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle, 2095 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Hernley’s sponsors Mees, who is a six-time Grand National champion, two-time X Games gold medalist, and two-time Troy Bayliss Classic winner. He was named Cycle News Rider of the Year in 2017. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and the ride will begin at 12:30 p.m. “Generally a guest for a ride like this will be in the beginning of the pack, but Jared’s going to start in the back and keep moving up through the group to ride with each of the participants,” Hogan explained.
Currently, 65 women serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, 52 in the House and 13 in the Senate. Gov. Tom Wolf’s cabinet includes eight women. Last year, Pennsylvania made state history by sending four women to the U.S. House of Representatives. The state recently launched a new website, www.pa.gov/women-vote, which offers a comprehensive guide to the Pennsylvania women and events that played an integral part in the state and
national suffrage movement. Lucretia Mott, a Philadelphian, was a nationally known abolitionist and suffragist whose views were shaped by her Quaker faith. Along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mott helped organize the first women’s rights convention, held in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in 1848. In the early 20th century, suffragists Caroline Katzenstein and Dora Kelly Lewis were leaders in the Pennsylvania suffrage movement and influential mem-
bers of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman’s Party. Katzenstein served as secretary and publicist for several suffrage associations at the state and national level. Once women gained the right to vote in 1920, she dedicated the rest of her life to women’s labor rights. Lewis often sacrificed her health and freedom for the cause. Between 1917 and 1919, she was arrested multiple times for involvement in pro-suffrage demonstrations. While imprisoned at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia, she was force-fed during a hunger strike she helped organize to protest the harsh treatment of the suffragists and was knocked unconscious by guards. The 19th Amendment became law across the United States more than a year after Pennsylvania’s vote. In August 1920, the requirement that three-fourths of states ratify the amendment was finally attained with Tennessee’s vote. Eight days later – on August 26, 1920 – U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
Voting from pg 1 Acting Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar joined officials and members of the public in the Capitol Rotunda on June 24 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Pennsylvania General Assembly’s vote to ratify the 19th Amendment that would eventually give women the right to vote. Attendees shared in the celebration by “ratifying” copies of the amendment with their signatures. The General Assembly approved the amendment 20 days after it had cleared Congress on June 4, 1919, and was sent to the states for ratification. On loan from the Pennsylvania State Archives, Pennsylvania’s original ratification document and other historical records from the suffrage movement were on display. Boockvar was joined at the podium by guest speakers state Sen. Camera Bartolotta, state Rep. Joanna McClinton and Lynn Yeakel, founder and president of the Vision 2020 coalition. The anniversary event also served as a reminder of how women’s representation in government and leadership has evolved over the last century thanks to the 19th Amendment.

Community Picnic from pg 1 house, and an activity table with shelled corn and toy tractors and buckets to play with. A variety of lawn games, including bocce ball, laddergolf, and cornhole, will be set up to play, and a campfire will be blazing. A barbecue chicken dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Hot dogs and a variety of side dishes and beverages will also be served. Special entertainment for the picnic will be a Forgotten Friend Reptile Show set to take place from 7 to 8 p.m. The Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reptile rescue
and education. Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary founder and herpetologist Jesse Rothacker features 15 reptiles from both the local area and around the world in his presentations, including all four families of reptiles: snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodilians. At 8:30 p.m., an outdoor movie will be shown, and popcorn will be served. The family-friendly movie will be the original “Charlotte’s Web.” Attendees may bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. According to pastor Daryl Heistand,
the community picnic is a tradition that began in 2008 and has been growing ever since. The picnic serves as an opportunity for neighbors to meet neighbors and for the congregation to let the community know of its presence and that it is ready to show the love of Jesus. Approximately 125 people attended the picnic in 2018. Rissers Mennonite Church offers worship services each Sunday at 10 a.m., with Sunday school for people of all ages at 9 a.m. For more information, readers may call 717-653-4549.

Chatter Hi, everyone! Who is as shocked as I am that we are in the bottom half of July already!?! How did this sneak up on us? I swear it feels like Memorial Day was just last week. I blinked and June was gone! Thinking Out of the Box In a small Italian town, hundreds of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The loanshark was a very old, unattractive-looking guy that just so happened to fancy the business owner’s daughter. He decided to offer the business owner a deal that would completely wipe out the debt he owed him. However, the catch was that he would only wipe out the debt if he could marry the business owner’s daughter. Needless to say, this proposal was met with a look of disgust. The loan-shark said that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black. The daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick out a pebble. If it was black, the debt would be wiped, but the loan-shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would also be wiped, but the daughter wouldn’t have to marry the loan-shark. Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman’s garden, the loan-shark bent over and picked up two pebbles. Whilst he was picking them up, the daughter noticed that he’d picked up two black pebbles and placed them both into the bag. He then asked the daughter to reach into the bag and pick one. The daughter naturally had three choices as to what she could have done: 1. Refuse to pick a pebble from the bag. 2. Take both pebbles out of the bag and expose the loan-shark for cheating. 3. Pick a pebble from the bag fully well knowing it was black and sacrifice herself for her father’s freedom. She drew out a pebble from the bag, and before looking at it “accidentally” dropped it into the midst of the other pebbles. She said to the loan-shark, “Oh, how clumsy of me. Never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” The pebble left in the bag was obviously black, and seeing as the loan-shark didn’t want to be exposed, he had to play along as if the pebble the daughter dropped was white and clear her father’s debt. Moral of the story: It’s always possible to overcome a tough situation through “out-of-the-box” thinking

Strawberry Cream Cheese Cobbler
Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 cup milk 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups fresh strawberry halves 1 (4 ounce) package cream cheese, cut into small pieces Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Pour melted butter into the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish. 3. Mix milk, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a small bowl; pour over the butter in the baking dish. Arrange strawberry halves in a layer into the baking dish. Dot the strawberries with the cream cheese pieces. 4. Bake in preheated oven until top is golden brown and edges are bubbling, 30 to 45 minutes. Tip of the Week If you don’t already have one, get a basket for your remote controls so they stop getting lost behind the couch or under cushions. Also, keep a small flashlight in there in case of power outages. Fact of the Week Mr. Rogers mentioned out loud when he was feeding his fish because a young blind audience member once asked him to do so. She wanted to know the fish were OK. Joke of the Week To do list 1. Go to pet store. 2. Buy bird seeds. 3. Ask how long it will take for the bird to grow. 4. Wait for the reaction. Food for Thought Until God opens the next door, praise Him in the hallway.
Have a great week, everybody!
