At its 20th anniversary celebration event, the Cultural Alliance of York County (CAYC) announced the kickoff of its endowment-building campaign with a $500,000 contribution from the Arthur J. and Lee R. Glatfelter Foundation. This is the first gift made to the Pillars Endowment Campaign, which will build the operational capacity of the CAYC and provide dedicated annual resources to further the work of the arts and culture community in York County. Arthur J. Glatfelter, in partnership with other corporate leaders, founded the Cultural Alliance in 1999 to raise funds for arts and culture organizations in York. Over the last 20 years, CAYC has invested more than $10.4 million in financial support and $2.2 million in in-kind support for the arts. The Pillars Endowment will build on the original operational donations made by corporate and individual investors through the William H. Simpson Pillars of the Alliance fund established in 2003. Pillars of the Past donors made an extra gift to CAYC to offset operational costs and reduce the administrative expense burden each year, so more annual campaign contributions could be distributed to the arts and culture community. Through the Pillars Endowment Fund, gifts may be endowed in perpetuity to support the overall operations of the Cultural Alliance and provide annual funding to our innovative arts and cultural community. There are a limited number of naming opportunities available for the Pillars Endowment. Community members who are interested in more information on the initiative may contact Kelley Gibson at 717-8129255 or kelley@culturalyork.org. Founded as a United Arts Fund in 1999, the CAYC’s annual campaign supports eight partner agencies that are essential to arts and culture in the community and, under its new more inclusive and diverse operating model, will be expanding its funding to further grow and strengthen arts and culture in York County. Railway Purchases Locomotive Northern Central Railway Steam Into History recently purchased an EMD GP9 diesel locomotive from a private owner after many years in service at the Deferiet Paper Company of Deferiet, N.Y. The newest addition to the Northern Central Railway Steam Into History fleet arrived on Dec. 13, 2019, at approximately 10:45 a.m. The EMD GP9 is a four-axle road switcher diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1959, and it is powered by a 16-cylinder engine that generates 1,750 horsepower. Ownership of the engine, which was originally numbered 7249, transferred to Penn Central after the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroad merger and finally to Conrail. After being retired by Conrail in 1999, the EMD GP9 was purchased by the Deferiet Paper Company, then sold to a private owner. Northern Central Railway - Steam Into History purchased the GP9 engine to replace the current GP9-10 vintage diesel locomotive that it leased in 2015 to pull the coaches for its various family excursions.

BAPS Motor Speedway Introduces “Laps At BAPS”

Weis Markets Provides Community Service

The management team at BAPS Motor Speedway, which includes speedway owner Scott Gobrecht and general manager Kolten Gouse, is launching the Super Sportsman Rental Program, titled “Laps at BAPS,” which allows drivers to rent a Super Sportsman for an entire practice night. According to Gouse, the program allows drivers to get behind the wheel of a car in another division before they purchase one and gives them the opportunity to try out an open-wheel car. This program is only for Wednesday practice sessions at the speedway. According to Gouse, there are 17 available

In addition to donating food items, Weis Markets provides support and education to many groups in the area. Leigh Lauer, Weis Markets marketing event ambassador, volunteers every month at the York County Food Bank and Catholic Harvest Food Pantry providing a service for them, whether it is bagging up bread, checking dates, straightening shelves or helping with the family food distribution.

dates on the 2020 schedule. A driver interested in renting a Super Sportsman can do so for a fee. He or she will be able to test the car multiple times throughout the three-hour session. There will be an additional crash deposit, but it will be returned at the end of the session if there is no significant damage. Interested drivers will be given top-notch equipment to test. The car will feature parts from Winters Performance Products, ACP Headers, TQ Fiberglass and Wilwood Brakes, among others. Marysville Motor Cars and Blazer’s Body Shop are helping with sponsorship of the program.

The first practice session will take place on Saturday, March 7. There will be three more sessions to kick off the season on Wednesay, March 11; Saturday, March 14; and Wednesday, March 18. Other Wednesday dates will include April 8 and 22, May 6 and 27, June 24, July 8 and 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 2 and 30. There will be three dates to close out the season on Wednesday, Oct. 7; Thursday, Oct. 15; and Wednesday, Oct. 21. BAPS Motor Speedway is located at 690 York Road, York Haven. Revs Seek Name Suggestions For ABS System The York Revolution and the other teams in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) have announced that they are seeking names for each of their ballparks’ automated ball-strike system (ABS) radar panels (“robo umps”). Through the Atlantic League’s partnership with Major League Baseball, the previously nameless panels made history in the 2019 ALPB season by electronically determining balls and strikes and relaying the calls to umpires wearing earpieces. The ABS system at PeoplesBank Park in York was the first electronic system to call balls and strikes in a professional baseball game, calling a strike on the first pitch of the 2019 ALPB All-Star Game in York last July. MLB later used the ABS in its Arizona Fall League and announced earlier this year that it will test electronic balls and strikes in spring training games this year. Each of the Atlantic League’s seven home clubs are inviting their local supporters to submit suggestions for names for their ABS radar panels on the teams’ social media channels. The teams will announce the winning names on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14. The Atlantic League’s 23rd championship season will kick off on Thursday, April 30, when the Sugar Land Skeeters host the York Revolution and the High Point Rockers host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Opening day for the Revs will be Friday, May 8, when the team welcomes the Road Warriors. Ticket memberships are available at www.yorkrevolution.com, and individual game tickets will go on sale in the coming weeks.
