Ramping Up For Give Local York By Chelsea Peifer

On Friday, May 1, individuals and businesses will have the opportunity to take part in the third annual Give Local York, a 24hour online giving event that will benefit more than 300 nonprofit organizations that serve York County. Community members may donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice at www.givelocalyork.org on that day, and all donations will be enhanced with bonus funds provided by Give Local York sponsors. “I like it refer to it as a holiday for York County because it’s a day to celebrate all of the great nonprofit organizations that we have,” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “It’s a very high-energy day with lots of events going on.” Participating organizations are encouraged to plan an event for the community to take part in on May 1, whether by themselves or in partnership with other participating nonprofits or local businesses to raise awareness about Give Local York. The day will culminate with a

Give Local York celebration from 5 to 10 p.m. in downtown York during First Friday. With hundreds of organizations set up and live music and dancing in the square, Given said, “it just becomes a big party.” From 9 p.m. to midnight, a New Year’s Eve-style event will be hosted at the Valencia Ballroom, 142 N. George St., York. That celebration will close out Give Local York with a countdown to midnight. Confetti cannons will go off and there will be a balloon drop as the grand total amount raised is announced. More than $3.2 million was generated through the 2019 Give Local York event. Given said that while organizers are of course hoping to top that number, the focus for 2020 has shifted from setting a financial goal to having 10,000 unique donors - a hefty but achievable jump from last year’s 8,777 donors. “The focus on individual donors is shifting our marketing approach this year,” Given explained. “We are still shining a light on each of the organizations and what they do, but we are also

doing a lot of spotlighting volunteers.” Organizations will also have the opportunity to publicize volunteer roles to encourage people to get involved in new ways throughout the year. Given noted that individuals may also sign up to fundraise for a specific organization with their own online peer-to-peer fundraising page. “People like to support people that they know, so we’re hoping this gets people excited to give,” shared Given. Give Local York is hosted by The White Rose Leadership Institute, whose mission is to support nonprofit leaders. The White Rose Leadership Institute also offers the York Federal Fellowship, a yearlong program designed to strengthen the skills of nonprofit executive leaders. In addition to Give Local York providing a tremendous fundraising opportunity, participating nonprofits will have the opportunity to win various prizes and to attend trainings and webinars to set them up for success not only with Give Local York but with fundraising year-round. “We really use this as an opportunity for capacity-building: how to engage with people and tell your story,” Given said. Nonprofit organizations in York County may register to participate in Give Local York at www.givelocalyork.org through Friday, March 27. To learn more about the organizations participating in Give Local York, readers may visit www.town lively.com/give-local-york-spot lights. Participating organizations are also being spotlighted in the editions of the Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Merchandiser and York County Community Courier leading up to the event.

During Give Local York on May 1, people will be encouraged to donate online to support their choice of more than 300 nonprofit organizations in a 24-hour giving spree. All contributions will be enhanced thanks to the donations of event sponsors.

Why is the organization excited to participate in Give Local York this year? In the first five years of operation, Northern Central Railway of York drew more than 105,000 visitors from 48 U.S. states and 15 foreign countries, generating more than $20 million in economic benefits and helping to solidify York County as a unique tourist destination. Northern Central Railway’s experiential programming educates, entertains, and enlightens visitors with a diverse schedule of excursions incorporating local history, as well as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) initiatives, into fun themes that create memories that last a lifetime for all ages. Last year, even with limited resources, we did our best to maximize the potential offered by Give Local York and we met our goals! We hope to do even better this year to raise $15,000 to go towards the creation and development of more educational, enlightening, and entertaining events that help keep us on track!

Calum Wallace of Stewartstown is one of 11 medical students who are the first to be accepted to Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s Geisinger Primary Care Scholars progam. The students were chosen through a competitive application process. The selected scholars will receive a monthly stipend and will pay no tuition or fees in exchange for an obligation to work in a primary care area (such as family medicine, internal

medicine or medicine - pediatrics) at Geisinger once they finish their residency. In addition to the tuition relief and stipend, the scholars will also receive mentorship and training in Geisinger’s newly redesigned practices where primary care is emphasized as the most important place doctorpatient relationships are built. The redesign has elevated primary care and provided clinicians with more time and resources to focus on patients, not administrative tasks.

During the Geisinger Primary Care Scholars selection process, preference is given to students who express a desire to care for the communities Geisinger serves. Selection criteria includes commitment to primary care, demonstrated financial need, academic merit, diversity and predictors of whether the applicant is likely to stay in the region Geisinger serves. Wallace is a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s MD Class of 2023.

College Posts Art Events York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will host an art event series. Unless noted otherwise, events will be held in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays; from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. “The Shallow Habit of Seeing” exhibition by James Johnson will be on display through Thursday, Feb. 27, in York College Galleries, Wolf Hall. His art encompasses installation, sculpture, and photography and makes reference to architecture and issues surrounding representation, economics, and power. He is influenced by conceptual art and minimalism. A screening of the film “Graphic Means” will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. The feature-length documentary is about the history of graphic design production after the letterpress, focusing on the phototypesetting era and the transition that occurred as a result of the Digital Revolution. A discussion with Briar Levit, director and producer, will follow the film. Guest artist Deborah Dancy will speak on “Turbulence” at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12. Dancy is a Guggenheim fellow and professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut. The “Fine Art and Graphic Design Senior Exhibition” will run from Friday, April 24, through Saturday, May 9. Student presentations will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. In their final semester, fine art and graphic design students will exhibit their final bodies of work and senior projects, respectively, demonstrating the formal and conceptual growth they have achieved. The event will open with PechaKuch-style presentations, followed by a reception and announcement of awards. An Appell Fellow exhibition by Amber Wiesberg, Class of 2019, will run from Wednesday, May 27, through Saturday, June 27, in the Cora Miller Gallery, Wolf Hall. The Appell Arts Fellowship is an 11-month residency program awarded to a graduate of York College’s art program. “Typorama 9.0” will be on display from May 27 to June 27 in the Brossman Gallery, Wolf Hall. The exhibit will demonstrate the varied media use and experimentation of the college’s graphic design program. Students engage in wordplay, expression, and analysis of form in a distinctively letter-based way. The events are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. For additional information on any of the events, readers may contact Allison Altland at 717-815-1354 or aaltland@ycp.edu or visit www.ycp.edu.
