York County Libraries opened for curbside pickup of library materials on June 15. Members must reserve books in advance at www.yorklibraries.org and are then notified when the items are ready for pickup at the library. Members may also return checked out materials to library book drops. The decision to offer curbside service is in alignment with the direction and recommendations of the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Gov. Tom Wolf, Pennsylvania’s Department of Health, and the CDC. York County libraries will gradually reintroduce the breadth of library services while working to provide a safe library environment for employees and members. Staff have received training on recommended cleaning and disinfection procedures and will follow safe handling and quarantine protocols for returned library materials. Protective barriers have been put in place, and

staff will wear masks and other protective gear for personal and public safety. York County Libraries locations are asking that members wear masks or face coverings when utilizing the curbside pickup services. At several library locations, pickup of materials will be in the lobby. Only one member or family will be allowed inside at a time. These measures are required for everyone’s health and safety. All physical library materials currently checked out through York County Libraries have been renewed until Wednesday, July 1, and no fines are being assessed on these items. Services at the Salem Square, Manchester Township, and Springettsbury Township libraries will not be offered during this initial phase of reopening. For additional details about curbside pickup, library hours, and more, readers may visit www.yorklibraries.org/reopening.

Opportunity Zones Report Available York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) released “Understanding Pennsylvania’s Opportunity Zones,” a report analyzing findings from a statewide survey of Opportunity Zone practitioners. YCEA commissioned York College’s Arthur Glatfelter Institute for Public Policy to conduct the survey and produce the report. Federal Opportunity Zones were created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and since then have been viewed by some as a way to catalyze billions of dollars of transformational investment in census tracts that have experienced decades of poverty and disinvestment. The survey was intended to take

stock of the impact of Pennsylvania’s 300 Opportunity Zones from the municipal officials and economic development professionals directly involved with them. The results were analyzed in the first quarter of 2020, before COVID-19 placed restrictions on development. Key report findings indicated that all respondents identified barriers to fully leveraging Opportunity Zones, including lack of capacity for promoting and coordinating the zones, lack of investors with capital gains, and lack of applicable projects that could provide a return to investors. Despite the barriers, many respondents

said they are currently promoting Opportunity Zones within their jurisdictions. The majority of census tracts have received no investment. Less than 25% of respondents were aware of Opportunity Zones investment in their census tracts. Most projects within Opportunity Zones would have occurred without the additional incentive. Of those respondents who were aware of projects, only 13% said their projects were made possible by Opportunity Zone investment. This represents approximately 11 projects statewide. The full report is available at www.opportunityyork.org.

Others helped, but the four Marines were the only ones to risk their own lives and enter the water. The Marines instructed the family members to float on their backs as they were pulled to shore. Three of the family members survived the riptide, but despite CPR efforts administered by the Marines, the father perished. The mother, Allison Joy, only had the Marines’ names from the police report. She searched for them throughout the bases located in North Carolina and was able to track them down to express her thanks. In the summer of 2019, she reunited with

the Marines and presented them with a plaque of appreciation. She also established the Float Don’t Fight Foundation to increase awareness of the dangers of riptides and to encourage beach-goers to include a flotation device with their beach gear. She was also instrumental in relaying the story to the Marines’ superiors. On Jan. 28, Reichart-Warfel and his three fellow Marines had the rare honor of being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal - the highest noncombat medal for individuals who have undertaken a lifethreatening risk in an act of

U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Leary Kyle Reichart-Warfel, who graduated from York Catholic High School in 2012, will forever be linked with the Joy family of Virginia for his actions on June 15, 2018. Reichart-Warfel and three fellow Marines were stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., enjoying a free day at Atlantic Beach when they were approached by someone who alerted them to a family struggling in the water. Without hesitation, the four Marines swam out over 150 yards to rescue the father, mother, and twin daughters who were caught in a riptide.

Rehmeyer’s remains were then returned to Stewartstown, where his funeral was held in 1919 at St. John Cemetery, hosted by the Stewart American Legion, now called the Stewartstown post. Members of American Legion Post 455, Post 455 Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, Stewartstown Young Vets U12 Baseball Team, and community members also placed American flags on the graves of all veterans interred at Stewartstown Cemetery. The effort was led by former

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by memorial readings and prayers led by ALR chaplain Curtis Steeg. The placement of flags is part of the annual effort to remember individuals who have served in the U.S. military. The flags will remain in place at the cemetery through July to honor veterans for their service and sacrifices.

35 years ago we built this store, as this community around Loganville was in need of a good hardware store. We realize that this need has not changed; however, our ability to provide that service has changed. We have sold the property to a large, nationally recognized retailer. They will soon announce their plans to provide services to the Loganville community. Many of you have shopped at our location in Shrewsbury. We hope that you will continue to do so. FORMER KNEE PAIN SUFFERER SHARES: “I was looking at surgery…But now there’s no need.” New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. • Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? • Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? • Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? • Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? • Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? • Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, July 8th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA). If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “When I first started my PT at Madden, I had trouble with just about everything. My knees hurt and sometimes fell out from under me. Since my PT, I have been able to clean with a bit of pain but nothing like it had been and I am able to do things with my grandkids again! When I went on vacation, I put so many steps on my legs and didn’t mind at all!” -Sharon M. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call Heather at 717-210-9945 today. Tell her you would like to “Save your seat for the Knee Pain Workshop.” To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 10 seats… and seats fill up FAST. All registrants will receive a FREE copy of the Top 3 Exercises for Knee Pain when they come to the workshop.
