detox as an initial step. Delta office staff will perform the levelof-care assessment, which can be given to an insurance company as a formal statement of the assistance needed, he said. Then, in a personal interview, the counseling staff will get to know the person, Null said, adding that the outcome of that meeting can determine whether short- or long-term inpatient or outpatient care is needed. While Gaudenzia will provide only outpatient care at the Delta office, counselors can refer the person to its inpatient treatment facilities in other Pennsylvania locations. Gaudenzia’s outpatient counseling can begin on an intensive basis, seeing a client as many as four times a week, and then decrease to fewer sessions. Null said that Gaudenzia can provide up to a full year of service. As far as insurance coverage is concerned, Melanie Irwin, division director of outpatient services, said the Delta office will work first with York/Adams Drug & Alcohol Commission, establishing a partnership to aid people who lack insurance. Then it will soon network with major

Southern York County residents will soon have access to a facility providing outpatient services and assessment for drug and alcohol addictions. Gaudenzia, a nonprofit organization operating treatment facilities in 105 locations in four states, will celebrate its newest office at 617 Main St., Delta, with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3. The public is invited to visit to learn about the available programs and to tour the facility’s private counseling offices, group room, and waiting area. At 1:40 p.m., a dedication ceremony with guest speakers and light refreshments will be held at neighboring DP Lounge/Delta Pizza at 533 Main St. Local and state officials and community representatives will be present. Those attending the open house will learn about Gaudenzia’s provision of individual and group counseling and its assessment for level-of-care placements. According to Matthew Null, Gaudenzia marketing manager II, when a client contacts Gaudenzia, the client is screened first, perhaps by phone, and may go to

Windy Hill Senior Center, 1472 Roth’s Church Road, Spring Grove, will offer a free, eightweek memory support program beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and Good News Consulting. This is a program for those living with dementia as well as their care partners to join an early-stage support group where they can connect with others facing similar challenges. The first hour will be dedicated
to education on various aspects of life with dementia. During the second hour the group will be split, with those living with the disease meeting with others who have also been diagnosed and the care partners meeting with other caregivers for support. Funding for this program is provided by a grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging. Participation is limited to 30 individuals, with registration required by calling 717225-0733.
York County/Delta facility began in February 2018, when various sites were examined and efforts to secure grant funding began. Those providing financial assistance included Exelon Generation, Memorial Health Fund, The Donald B. & Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation, and WellSpan Health, said Jim Ingolio, community affairs manager. Ingolio said that three area businesses supporting the open house event are Dale Miller & Son, DP Lounge/Delta Pizza, and Jarrettsville Federal Savings & Loan. Null said that landlord Rick Farrington provided assistance in getting the building renovated for Gaudenzia. Aid was also received from Mason-Dixon Anti-Drug Coalition, MasonDixon Community Services, real estate agent Marcy Laferte, DP owner Sal Ferranti, and others. People wishing to attend the open house on Oct. 3 should respond via www.eventbrite.com. Anyone with questions about the new Delta facility may contact Irwin at 717-847-2432 or Mirwin @gaudenzia.org. More information about Gaudenzia can be found at www.gaudenzia.org.
insurance companies, which already have established relationships with Gaudenzia. The Delta office will also target Maryland resources, so those having insurance based in that state will not encounter difficulty, she said. No age limit exists for clients, so both adults and adolescents can receive help from Gaudenzia, she said. Irwin emphasized that people with financial need can be assisted, and she said the office has money set aside for community prevention measures. It hopes to give back to the community through efforts with school systems and investment in other services, she said. The office will handle cooccurring situations too, such as a circumstance when addiction is combined with related mental health issues. Irwin said that an initial goal is to have two or three counselors on-site, with the ability to work with 70 individuals. Gaudenzia is an accredited nonprofit addiction treatment and recovery services provider, recognized by the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs among other entities. Work to establish a southern

According to Lambert, by the beginning of July, 1,942 children were enrolled, and they had read 252,760 books. By July 30, participation had jumped to 2,041. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten may participate in the program. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free YCL card. All YCL locations participate in the program, and registration is open year-round. Children who reach the 1,000book goal between July 2, 2019, and July 1, 2020, will be part of YCL’s second graduation in August 2020. York County Libraries (YCL) president Robert F. Lambert and youth services director Paula Gilbert have announced initial results of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The early childhood initiative launched in October, and York County Libraries recently held its first graduation ceremony for 1000 Books readers. The initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. According to Gilbert, 68 children and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books in the program’s first nine months from Oct. 1, 2018, to July 1, 2019. All totaled, this group read 72,443 books during this period. At 1,000 books each, the total would have been 68,000 books. The group kept reading, collectively logging an additional 4,443 books. This group was the first to receive 1000 Books
