believe what it says,” Brown said. “We cover creation, the fall, rescue through Jesus’ death on the cross, and restoration through relationship with Him.” This school year has been somewhat different because of the pandemic; each local Bible Adventure meeting follows its respective school’s protocol. Carefulness extends to transportation, with seating charts for buses. To volunteer, an individual must be at least age 16, but there is no upper age limit. Brown noted that several octo- and nonagenarians are actively involved with Bible Adventure. All volunteers must past background checks. They do not need to be members of the hosting churches, but they must have a desire to introduce children to Jesus, Brown said. Additionally, bus drivers are needed. Interested individuals must have a CDL with a P endorsement. Brown has been involved with Bible Adventure for several years after previously working See Bible Adventure pg 3

Bible Adventure programs are offered for students in third to fifth grades, with the occasional addition of sixth grade, depending on the school. For one hour a week during the school year, participants are excused from their classes to attend Bible Adventure. Typically, the programs are held at a nearby church, but some schools allow students to meet in a room on campus. Volunteers gather at the venues a half-hour before students arrive, then take another half-hour afterward to debrief. During the Bible Adventure hour, volunteers lead group singing, teach a Bible lesson, and meet with students in small groups to work on memorizing Bible verses. Scripture memorization is a significant part of Bible Adventure, with a special points-and-rewards program to incentivize participation. Brown noted that the curriculum is created by Joy El staff members and covers the contents of the Bible from beginning to end. “We start with explaining what the Bible is because

The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), along with the countywide Workforce Advisory Committee, announced the launch of a new workforce and education tool called Pathways Portal. Utilizing the work of the Pathways to Prosperity countywide workforce action plan, the portal serves as a comprehensive hub of resources for job seekers, educators, students, business owners and leaders, and community members. Stewartstown United Methodist Church is looking for singers for the Christmas season. Due to the pandemic, the church will not stage its annual Christmas cantata. Instead, the church will stage a Nativity, a live outdoor reenactment. The re-enactment will include 11 brief carol arrangements. Medical Optometry America (MOA) announced recently that its first practice location will open in Shrewsbury in December, and it will be led by MOA’s regional clinical director, Leslie O’Dell, Doctor of Optometry, FAAO, a York County native and Shrewsbury resident. MOA, a national optometric brand focused exclusively on medical eye care, MOA is launching a practice management system and franchise model as the demand for those services increases. MOA’s first practice will be located at 781 Far Hills Drive, Unit 100, Shrewsbury. MOA has created, trademarked and copywritten a set of best practices covering a wide range of non-surgical eye health conditions. These guidelines were developed via a collaborative effort of MOA’s advisory board, which consists of both optometrists and ophthalmologists, and MOA’s chief medical officer. MOA best practices include standards for identifying, diagnosing, and treating medical eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic eye care, macular degeneration and dry eye disease. The cornerstone of the MOA model is the annual eye physical, a comprehensive medical eye exam that not only addresses eyerelated health, but also addresses potential medical problems that can be detected by a thorough examination of the eye. Following an MOA annual eye physical, patients will receive a personalized report card that provides a comprehensive overview of their eye health status and tracks the state and progression of and treatment recommendations

for numerous diseases and conditions. As MOA leadership members designed the layout of the initial practice in Shrewsbury, they have incorporated best practices and procedures to keep patients safe and comfortable. MOA will use this first location as a prototype for future office layouts and protocols in a postCOVID-19 world. In addition to the Shrewsbury office, MOA expects to open several other company locations this year. MOA has an academic affiliation with New England College of Optometry (NECO) to help guide training for future doctors and to expose students to a more medically focused model of optometry. MOA’s goal is to build a national franchise system using best practices in all facets of operations, including clinical, marketing, and practice management. Optometrists interested in learning more about MOA can contact Adam Smith, vice president of franchise sales, at asmith@modamerica .com. For more information, readers may visit www.medodamerica.com.

CBF Awards Contracts For Trees tity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF.

Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County received contracts to provide trees to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in 2021 and 2022.

Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the

ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as two-thirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.

Mark Harlacker of Red Lion and Lisa Harlacker of Red Lion have announced the engagement of their daughter, Shanley Harlacker of Red Lion, to Ryan Schroeder of Hampstead, Md. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quan-

YCSWA Resumes Tours, Programs The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has resumed facility tours and environmental education programs. These activities are currently being provided with added COVID-19 safety measures to protect visitors. Those who are interested in scheduling a tour or program may visit www.ycswa.com or call the management office at 717-845-1066. Tour opportunities include the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC) and the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex (HARC). Environmental education program activities include composting

with worms, known as vermicomposting, and “The Magic of Waste-to-Energy.” Tours of the YCRRC and the HARC are offered to individuals and groups. Participants of YCRRC tours learn how York County trash is converted to electricity while being reduced in volume by 90% to a much smaller amount of ash. HARC facility tours highlight how the YCSWA turned a now-closed landfill into 200 acres of space which hosts a wildlife habitat and recreation complex. Area News Anchor Sets Retirement WGAL 8 announced recently that longtime anchor Ron Martin will retire on Wednesday, Nov. 25, after more than 37 years with the news station. Martin has been a member of the WGAL News 8 team since 1983. He rose through the ranks to become the station’s main weeknight news anchor in 2000. Martin currently anchors WGAL News 8 at 5 p.m., the Emmy award-winning WGAL News 8 at 6 p.m., and WGAL News 8 at 11 p.m. Martin led WGAL’s coverage of some of the biggest stories in the station’s history, including the Hanover race

riots, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This November, WGAL News 8 will look back at the most memorable moments from Martin’s career at the station. These news stories will air during the news at 5 p.m. The celebration will culminate with Martin’s final broadcast on Nov. 25. “WGAL was my dream job and I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here,” said Martin, “but as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for me to spend more

time with my family.” Martin is a York native who began his career in broadcast journalism as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in communications, he returned home to the Susquehanna Valley to work as a reporter and news announcer at WSBA radio in York. Martin joined WGAL 8 and the NewsCenter 8 team in 1983. In 1985, he was named weekend news anchor. Two years later, Martin was named a weeknight news anchor on WGAL.

Among the many awards he has received during his career in broadcast journalism, Martin is a six-time Emmy award winner. He has also been honored for his many community service contributions in the central Pennsylvania region. His efforts in this area have been recognized by scores of organizations, including the state of Pennsylvania, the cities of York and Harrisburg, the Harrisburg and York chapters of the NAACP, the school districts of York and Harrisburg, and the Lancaster Urban League.

When the pandemic halted their original plans, Weis employees stepped up to meet the goal they had set for themselves by way of holding their inaugural Weis Market Food Truck Fest. Lauer suggested holding the event when her usual role became less time-consuming during the pandemic and she was looking for ways to support the community. Each food truck donated 10% of its proceeds to Bell. Lauer said that Weis is committed to being a good steward of the environment and also being a good steward in the community. See Bell pg 10

Bell Socialization Services Inc. presented several awards as part of its virtual Annual Celebration, which was available for viewing on Oct. 6. Bell recognized William “Billy” Simpson with the Personal Achievement Award, presented to a current service user who, in the past year, has made significant accomplishments to improve his or her quality of life. Patty Reese, program specialist with the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Department’s Adult Treatment Facility, attested to Simpson’s hard work in the past year. She noted that he is now able to walk several steps with support rather than walking on his knees. Billy has received services from Bell since 2008, according to Reese. Simpson’s family prefers to keep pictures of him private, so Reese accepted the award on Billy’s behalf. Kevin Hubbell received the Rita Patz Good Neighbor Award which is given to an individual or group that exemplifies not only being a neighbor of Bell Socialization Services Inc., but being close in association by providing neighborly time and/or resources to Bell. Hubbell has shown his support for Bell by looking out for the agency while on the job with RSDC and off the job. He is a member of the Bell’s Big Bed Race committee and also supports Bell through his service as a member of the board of directors for Re-Source York. the Ivan G. Hileman Award, which is awarded to a current Bell employee who has 15 or more years of employment and dedicated service and who has in the past year shown particularly noteworthy performance while being committed to Bell for the long haul. For over 25 years, Scott has been overseeing staff and caring for residents in a group living home. Even amidst stay-at-home protocols and the uncertainty and fear of living in a global pandemic, Scott continued to look after Bell residents, keeping their best interests in mind. Scott was nominated by employees who saw her dedication and commitment. This award is named in honor of Bell’s former executive director, Ike Hileman, whose 40-year career empowered the organization’s growth and impact. Bell recognized Jim Hale and Lion’s Hall Bingo as recipients of the Pauline Whitacre Community Services Award. The award is presented to an individual or group that provides time and resources to enhance Bell’s mental health programs. Bell’s social rehabilitation programs - and specifically the Sendero program for people whose first language is Spanish - have been the recipients of assistance from Lion’s Hall Bingo on numerous occasions, regularly receiving supplies, food, and funding for equipment. Lourdes Gonzalez, Sendero case worker, began the relationship by attending bingo.

Pauline Whitacre was a mental health consumer who volunteered daily at Bell for more than 20 years to help fellow consumers. She used her own vehicle and time to transport people to the first Bell Club drop-in center and always helped people to feel welcome and heard. Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a 501(c)(3) human services agency based in York, providing housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and homeless families. Since 1966, Bell’s programs have been seeking to provide an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York and Hanover areas improve their quality of living.

My shoulder hurt emptying the dishwasher, putting dishes away, picking up a full pot of coffee in the morning, and reaching items above my head. Now I can do all chores and more PAIN FREE!” - Susan B. Hello, Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Pain can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can stop you from feeling like a normal person… 4 It can make you change the way you move doing everyday activities… 4 It can make sleeping at night nearly impossible leaving you feeling tired all day long… And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden PT, our Rotator Cuff Experts have helped 100’s of people who have suffered needlessly with rotator cuff pain…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a Rotator Cuff Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, December 2nd at 7 PM… If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 4 The Single Biggest #1 Mistake shoulder pain sufferers make which actually stops them from healing AND can surprisingly lead to SURGERY… 4 The 3 Most Common Causes of Rotator Cuff Problems… 4 A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) 4 The Single WORST Position to Sleep in that Causes BIG Problems in the Shoulder and Rotator Cuff… 4 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Rotator Cuff Workshop? Call our office to register at 717-304-1520. Ask for Callie… We only have 15 seats available for the event… How Much Is It to Attend?
