Dog Licenses Now Available York County residents can now purchase 2021 dog licenses. State law requires all dogs age 3 months and older to be licensed by Friday, Jan. 1. There is a fee for an annual dog license, which is discounted if the animal is spayed or neutered. Lifetime licenses are available for dogs with permanent identifications. Older adults and persons with disabilities may purchase a license at a discounted rate. The owner’s contact information is used by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Dog Law, local police, and shelters to identify lost dogs and get them home safely. Failure to purchase a license for a dog may result in a fine. License fees support animal control services. Dog owners may purchase the licenses online, by mail,
or in person at the Treasurer’s Office, which is located at the York County Administrative Center, 28 E. Market St., York, or at any one of the 11 satellite subagents throughout York County. More information, including the mailing address, is available by visiting www.york countypa.gov and clicking on “Departments” at the top of the page, and then “Treasurer.” Readers may also visit www.facebook.com/ yorkcountytreasurer. If a dog has lost its lifetime license tag, the Treasurer’s Office can issue replacement tags. Owners should also notify the Treasurer’s Office if there is a change in their contact information. For assistance, readers may contact Alison Falcon at afalcon@yorkcountypa.gov or 717-771-4386.

Grants Offer Aid To Agencies
Emanuel U.M. Church in Loganville 40 South Main Street
As winter weather approaches and the COVID19 pandemic continues, the York County COVID-19 Response Fund, launched jointly by the York County Community Foundation (YCCF) and United Way of York County, recently awarded $143,300 to nonprofits helping members of the community. To date, the fund has raised over $1,049,550 and awarded a total of $617,238 in grants. The most recent grants were awarded to New Hope Ministries to continue providing emergency rental assistance funds, York Benevolent Association to help people facing food insecurity, York County Food Bank to prepare for winter food distribution, and Children’s Aid Society for York County Coalition on Homelessness (YCCH)

Code Blue Emergency Shelter. The York County COVID19 Response Fund has supported more than 478 families to help keep them in their homes during the pandemic through rental assistance, and it will continue to provide aid for eviction prevention. The Code Blue Emergency Shelter grant will support additional community need based on reduced capacity at homeless shelters. YCCH has identified that all existing emergency shelter spaces have been operating at less than full capacity in order to protect guests and staff from COVID-19 and to respect social distancing recommendations. This leaves the community with 195 missing overnight shelter beds for the coming winter months.
The cold weather only shelter, often referred to as Code Blue, provides anyone who is homeless with a place to get inside out of the winter weather elements and be safe when certain weather conditions are met. This shelter will supplement existing year-round shelter beds and provide overflow space the community uses during a typical winter. This new space will require its own staffing, supplies, sanitation, and intake processes and was set to open in December. The health and human services helpline 211 is available for individuals who may need additional resources for child care, food, housing, and other needs. Anyone can dial 211 or text their zip code to 898-211 to talk with a resource specialist for free. Although many nonprofit
organizations have paused their volunteer opportunities due to recommendations on social distancing, people can still help support urgent community needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals who are healthy and able may visit United Way’s COVID19 Resource page at www.unitedway-york.org/ covid-19, which is updated regularly with volunteer opportunities as they are received. To post a volunteer opportunity, readers may contact Bryce Kruger at krugerb@unitedway -york.org. For more information about the fund, readers may visit www.yccf.org/covid -19responsefund/. To contribute to the York County COVID-19 Response Fund, readers may visit www.yccf.org or www.united way-york.org.

Now I can stand, sit, walk and do yard work for a few hours at a time, not minutes like before I started. I feel as though I have been given a second chance at my family life.” - Sandra W.

Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories… and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, January 6th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury (in the Giant Shopping Center, right next to AAA). If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery.

Helping To Bring The World Within Reach BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Jennifer Allen and her husband, Phillip, adopted a baby in 2017, they didn’t know their lives would change in more ways than they could imagine. “My middle son has spina bifida,” said Allen. “He can’t feel from his knees down. … We didn’t know he had a disability until we were picking him up in China.” Jaden, 4, uses crutches to walk short distances and relies on a wheelchair for longer trips. Watching her son try to navigate the world with a disability inspired Allen to create Wonders Within Reach, a travel website and Jennifer Allen (second from left), pictured on a trip with her family (from far left) children Jaden, Nella and Wesley, and husband Phillip, created Wonders Within Reach to spotlight accessible family travel.

blog focused on travel resources for families with disabilities. Her blog, which she launched in February of 2019, was recently named in the top 10 internationally for disability travel blogs by Feedspot, which curates and ranks blogs in niche categories. Allen, who lives in Elizabethtown and is also the mother of Wesley, 8, and Nella, 4, was a lifelong traveler before having children and has visited places around the world. She wanted to bring that experience to her family but realized she needed to view travel in a different way because of Jaden. She got the idea for Wonders Within Reach after thinking about launching an Instagram account focused on family travel. She soon realized that although there were lots of accounts like
that, something was missing. “None of the families looked like mine,” she noticed. “You don’t see a lot of families with disabilities out traveling. You tend to see other families like yours at physical therapy or at the hospital. I wanted to show what it’s like out in the community.” Allen noted that approximately 20% of people in the United States live with a disability. “My goal with my website is to raise disability awareness throughout the travel industry,” she said. “I believe that awareness is the first step toward progress.” Allen’s website and blog feature posts on everything from the most accessible beaches to tips for a nostress hotel stay with children, as well as ideas to help make it a little easier to navigate the world with a
disability. “I know it’s difficult to get out and do things when you have a disability,” she stated. “I’m learning all sorts of tips and tricks and want to share those with other people.” COVID-19 has put a damper on her travel plans so far, she said, noting that the farthest they’ve gone as a family is Canada, but she hopes to schedule a European road trip in the future. Above all, she wants her website and blog to help raise disability awareness. “While my main audience is the disability community, I believe awareness is important for all of us,” she explained. “If we can see that there are people in the world who are different from us, we can all benefit.” To learn more about Wonders Within Reach, readers may visit https://wonders withinreach.com/.

ence theater. “It is a true radio show, like the Fireside Chats with FDR,” she stated. Listeners will be able to tune in on the DreamWrights website, https://dreamwrights.org, or listen on WITF or White Rose Community TV. Each radio show will feature a fun evening of entertainment, Nowell said. “‘The Grinch’ is simply an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book. Characters include The Grinch, Cindy Lou W ho and a bunch of Whos that act as narrators,” she ex plained. “‘Auntie Scrooge’ is a backward, updated, hilarious sequel to the beloved Dickens classic, and ‘The Plot to Overthrow Christmas’ features
characters such as Ivan the Terrible and Caligula.” Each performance will include a cast of upward of 15 people, and listeners may hear some familiar voices. “We have been lucky enough to bring in some local celebrities to join our casts, including radio hosts, CEOs of local organizations and a county commissioner,” Nowell remarked. There is no cost to listen to the Christmas Radio Showcase, although donations are encouraged. Each show promises to be an entertaining experience, Nowell noted, adding, “Overall, audiences can expect lots of laughs and a short escape away from their hectic, stressful 2020.”

DreamWrights Center for Community Arts will go retro for its Christmas show. This year, the York-based theater will offer a Christmas Radio Showcase, featuring three plays. The theater will start with “The Plot to Overthrow Christmas” on Monday, Dec. 21, followed by “The Grinch W ho Stole Christmas” on Tuesday, Dec. 22, and “Auntie Scrooge” on Wednesday, Dec. 23. All performances will be at 7 p.m., and on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, all three performances will be available at 7 p.m. While DreamWrights typically offers live performances on stage, this year required some creative thinking, said Kate Harmon, marketing coordinator. “We have been constantly looking for ways to adapt in these times, and we figured we could engage people through Zoom for rehearsals and still ‘get together’ in a sense,” she explained. “Our actors will come in one by one to record their parts so can we piece things together and keep everyone safe.” Amanda Nowell, guest director for “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” noted that the radio showcase will offer people a new way to experi-

Michelle Hovis, executive director of York County Human Services, and Mark Kimmel, manager and executive director of the York County Conservation District, are set to retire. Hovis will leave the county this fall after 35 years of service. Kimmel has worked for the county for 33 years and will retire in early 2021. Hovis began her career with the York Adams Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities program, working in various roles in the area of mental health. She was instrumental in the development of services targeted to individuals leaving the state hospital as a result of downsizing. She later became the first director of the York/Adams HealthChoices
Management program, the department established to manage the behavioral health services for individuals on Medical Assistance. Through that work, many new programs were established that created clinical, social and housing opportunities for individuals with significant needs. In 2012, she became the executive director of York County Human Services, overseeing the seven departments within the division. Kimmel started with the county’s Conservation District in 1985 as a no-till specialist funded by a grant program through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The position evolved into a nutrient management specialist, and in 1987, Kimmel was pro-

now oversee several dozen programs with a $1.6 million county budget. Kimmel noted that his work has included helping to educate school-age children through Envirothon programs. The county will post the positions publicly as the county administration seeks to fill them.

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has announced the suspension of various services due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to reduce person-to-person contact. Effective Dec. 9, the YCSWA has suspended residential electronics recycling until further notice.
Residents who would normally bring their electronic devices to the YCSWA’s free electronics recycling program should hold onto their electronic devices until the pandemic has ended. Once it is safe to do so, the YCSWA will reopen electronics recycling to residents.
Additionally, the YCSWA is suspending its free in-person facility tours and environmental education programming. Virtual options are available to educators and the public. Options include video tours of the York County Resource Recovery Center and the York County Sanitary Landfill/Hopewell

The holiday season is here, and people are planning family-focused meals. It is helpful to have a variety of recipes at the ready to ensure that meals large and small are a success. While the main course might get most of the attention, cooks should not forget about the side dishes that complement and complete a meal. Creamed spinach with Taleggio, from “Rachael Ray 50: Memories and Meals From a Sweet and Savory Life” by Rachael Ray, is a flavorful and versatile side dish that can be paired with roasts or poultry.

Creamed Spinach With Taleggio (Serves 8)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 lb. Taleggio, with the rind trimmed and the cheese diced Juice of 1/2 lemon 1/2 cup grated ParmigianoReggiano Directions: 1. Line a very large strainer or colander with a large, clean kitchen towel. Fill the colander with spinach leaves and pour boiling water from a kettle over the spinach to wilt the leaves. When cool enough to handle, wrap up and twist the towel to wring out all excess liquid. Finely chop the drained spinach. (If a very large colander is not available, this can be done in batches.) 2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil, two turns of the pan. Then add the butter. When the butter foams, add the shallots and garlic and cook for 3 minutes, until the shallots soften. Add the cream and season with the nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Melt in the Taleggio. Add the lemon juice and finish with the Parmigiano-Reggiano.
