Library Receives Recognition
2019 Mock Trial Competition Set
Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover, was named a Gold Star Library by PA Forward, a division of the Pennsylvania Library Association. The library was recognized for offering quality programs within the five Literacies: basic, information, financial, health, and social and civic. A reception was held by the library’s board of governors on Jan. 24. In attendance were local business owners, supporters, board members, York County Libraries staff, and dignitaries Dan Moul, Chris Reilly, and Carrie Nace, representing Kate Klunk’s office. Founded in 1911, Guthrie Memorial Library has a history of providing free and low-cost programs for the community to help shape the stories of local children, teenagers, adults, seniors, and families. The library is an accessible-to-all learning and gathering space, serving as a resource for information, recreation, literacy support, and lifelong learning.
Almost 300 teams from 242 high schools across Pennsylvania will compete in district and regional levels of the Statewide Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program, now in its 36th year, is recognized as one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eightmember student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the
