How does the organization work to

achieve its goals? The mission of OrangeMite Studios is to involve the greater Dover, Pa., community in high-quality artistic performances brought to life through innovative educational experiences. We produce four productions each year and are working our way through Shakespeare’s canon. We also have a kids’ camp in the summer for grades four through eight. The children learn about Shakepeare’s language and how to interpret meaning. They learn about blocking a show, creating props and sets, and also memorizing lines. At the end of two weeks, they put on a full Shakespeare production.

York College has created the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund (SVIF) thanks to a gift from Norm Weinstock, a 1968 graduate of York Junior College and a York native. Weinstock and his wife, Sheila, have given to organizations including York College. In the fall of 2011, they used a charitable gift annuity and pledge of cash to fund the Weinstock Auditorium in the college’s Willman Business Center. In addition, Weinstock facilitated York College’s $500,000 proposal to the NASDAQ Foundation, which resulted in the creation of the NASDAQ Trading Laboratory. More recently, Weinstock decided he wanted to do something additional for the College after meeting with Dr. James Norrie, dean of the Graham School of Business. Weinstock now lives near Boston, and a friend of his is involved with the Martin Trust Center for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Entrepreneurship, which provides the expertise, support, and connections MIT students need to become effective entrepreneurs. Weinstock provided a $100,000 gift to create the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund at York College. SVIF will provide micro-investments up to $5,000 for selected student- or alumni-led start-ups. Each year, a competitive process will be used, including the involvement of an external investment

Funds are advanced as a loan with expectations of future returns and are associated with access to entrepreneurial coaching, mentoring, and business development support. Shamrocks In The White Rose City The 36th annual York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 16. The parade will step off at 1 p.m. from Market and Penn streets and then proceed east on Market Street to Duke Street. The parade is a York tradition that attracts thousands of spectators to the parade route. The annual celebration of Celtic heritage will feature approximately 100 entries, including a variety of bands, Irish

dance groups, floats, decorated and antique vehicles, clowns, individuals, family groups, organizations, media groups, and more. Mary Yeaple, along with her husband, Rodney, and their son, Jay, will serve as the grand marshals. Additionally, Irish dancers will perform at locations across the city prior to the start of the parade. The schedule is as follows: Oh! Gill’s Irish Dance Team at Central Market from 11 a.m. to noon, Paloma School of Irish Dance at Martin Library from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Ni Riain School of Irish Dance at Cherry Lane from noon to 12:30 p.m.,

and McGinley School of Irish Dance at Penn Market from noon to 12:30 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.YorkSaintPatricksDayParade .org, call 717-578-0146, or find details on Facebook and Twitter. The parade is organized by the York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization. In addition to corporate sponsorships, a variety of fundraising activities are held throughout the year to raise the funds necessary to present the family-friendly event.

Comfort Stations Provide Shelter During the extreme heat of summer and the ice and snow of winter, there is always the possibility of disruptions in electricity to power heat and/or air conditioning in homes and businesses. These disruptions may go on for hours and even days. Although everyone should be prepared for emergencies and to sustain themselves for up to 72 hours, this is not always possible, especially for the elderly, those with access and functional needs, or families with small children. York County Local Municipal Emergency Management

Coordinators (EMCs) look for organizations within their individual municipalities that may be able to provide cooling stations and/or heating comfort stations. EMCs have found that faith-based community organizations (FBCOs) are best able to provide residents with a place to go. Therefore, local EMCs attempt to coordinate heating and/or cooling comfort stations with FBCOs. Memorandums of agreement with FBCOs are written by EMCs and signed by local elected officials and the officials of the FBCOs, which agree to be available to shelter people on short

notice. These comfort stations are not required to provide meals and/or overnight accommodations, but they do have chairs, tables, bathroom facilities and water fountains. In the event of a known long-term disruption to power, mass care shelters may be established by the local chapter of the American Red Cross, but may take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours to be set up. More information is available by contacting one’s local municipal government office.

Staff members from the West York Area School District recently began riding seven of the district’s elementary-level buses in an effort to promote better behavior and calmer travel experiences. Adult riders will serve as mentors and monitors on buses that have recently seen some discipline issues. The purpose of the “Bulldog Bus Buddies” is to help

diffuse disciplinary situations between student riders that might normally escalate with no direct supervision. The pilot initiative is part of the district’s commitment to student safety. For more information, readers may contact the district transportation department at at transportation@wyasd.k12.pa.us or 717-792-4046.

Students Hold Food Drive Catholic schools in the York area kicked off Catholic Schools Week by helping the community while celebrating. Instead of a fee being charged at the annual Battle of the Buildings event, canned goods were collected for the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry.

Students from St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph Dallastown, St. Joseph York, St. Patrick, St. Rose of Lima, and York Catholic collected more than 21,000 canned goods, or about 12,500 pounds. The food pantry reported that it was the largest singleevent donation it has received.

District Staff Ride On Buses

Website: www.oldfirefarts.org Facebook: Search for “Old Fire Farts of York County PA” Robert Straw, who handles public information for the group and has been with the organization since its formation in 2013, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Old Fire Farts of York County PA? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The mission of the Old Fire Farts of York County PA is to preserve the history of the fire service for future generations by means of preservation and education. We also provide financial support for current emergency responders by awarding annual scholarship funds toward their educational advancements. Our goal is the preservation of fire history by preserving historical fire information, collecting equipment and memorabilia, and supporting and maintaining local fire museums for future generations. We hold four major fundraising events each year to fund our goal. The Old Fire Farts of York County PA have launched a scholarship program to support York County first responders working toward a better educational opportunity to better the emergency service field in which they work or volunteer. The goal is to ensure better leadership and a safer work environment and to have quality trained personnel. Approximately how many staff mem bers and volunteers are involved? We are a 100 percent volunteer organization made up of men and women who are fire buffs, collectors, active and retired firefighters, EMS personnel, and 911 dispatchers. We currently have 68 volunteer members. The board of directors consists of six appointed members: president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and two members-at-large. We hold our annual meeting in January and meet quarterly the rest of the year. Committees are appointed by the board of directors to perform temporary or permanent duties as seen fit. Such committees could be finance, scholarship grant, public relations, special events, and fundraising. Did Old Fire Farts of York County PA

par ticipate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? No, we did not participate the first year. We heard about how much fun it was, and we want to increase our mission and goals in 2019, so we got in early this year in hopes of increasing our donations capability. We want to participate this year because we have two new projects. We offer two fundraisers that go toward our operating budget, and all other funds and donations go toward our mission of fire history preservation and educational scholarships for current emergency responders. Over the last five years, we have given over $6,000 toward the two York County fire museums and over $8,000 in emergency responder educational scholarships. What are the organization’s goals for 2019 and Give Local York? We will be holding our sixth annual York Fire Muster at Cousler Park on Sunday, Sept. 29. It is a full day of fire apparatus on display, a pumping contest, a firefighters’ skills challenge, a children’s corner with fire-related games and safety displays, entertainment, and lots of food trucks. We want to help preserve our York

County fire history on digital format to make it available at both county fire museums. We are looking at helping with the restoration of the Rescue Fire Company Monument at the York Fire Museum and the addition of an elevator remodeling project. The monument was put up in Penn Park in the early 1900s and is now at the York Fire Museum and in need of restoration. It is dedicated to all York City firefighters who die in the line of duty. We would like to give out four $1,500 educational scholarships this year. Our 68 members own 104 pieces of antique fire apparatus. They date from the late 1700s hand-drawn fire tubs and also include a 1936 Red Lion fire truck, a 1926 chain-driven fire truck from the Victory Fire Company in Spring Garden Township, and a York City 100-foot ladder truck. We have participated in the York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade with five or six trucks the last two years, and we will be back again this year. Our Give Local York goal is $15,000. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? They will go toward our mission statement, our educational scholarships, and the Fire Monument restoration.
