find responders performing CPR on Bristol. Her babysitter, a former nurse, had also been performing CPR. The responders were able restore a normal heart rhythm, but Bristol continued to need supportive CPR on her way to the hospital. Bristol spent five weeks in the hospital with other complications, including seizures, infection and a blood clot in her heart. Doctors were unable to determine exactly what had caused Bristol’s cardiac arrest, but she received an implantable defibrillator to protect her against future episodes. She had to relearn to sit, crawl, walk and talk during her rehabilitation, but she has since returned to the normal life of a 2-yearold girl. She recently became a big sister. Funds raised through the York Heart Ball will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, health care quality improvement, investment in lifesaving research and

Local Legends To Be Honored The York Revolution will honor local legends of the sport on Saturday, April 27, when the team hosts Negro League Night at PeoplesBank Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York. The event will feature an auction of game-worn commemorative jerseys presented by PeoplesBank to benefit the William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum managed by the Crispus Attucks Association of York. The addition of two new hospitality spaces constructed this offseason on the skybox level are the Monarch and Solomon suites. The Monarch Suite pays tribute to the Colored Monarchs of the Diamond. Formerly the Cuban Giants based in Trenton, New Jersey, the Monarchs moved to York in 1890 as part of the Interstate League and dominated the league with a 40-16 record. They were considered the

pennant winner when the league disbanded in July 1890. The Solomon Suite honors the legacy of King Solomon “Sol” White, second baseman of the Colored Monarchs of the Diamond during their season in York and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. One of the most important names in Negro League Baseball, his playing career spanned five seasons and 152 games, in which he hit .359 with 169 runs scored, 231 hits, 40 doubles, and 41 stolen bases. After, he moved into team management and spent nearly 25 years building rosters and managing seasons for teams in Philadelphia, New York, Columbus, and Cleveland, as well as in the Cuban League. White also authored the first - and, for a long time, only - book on Negro League Baseball, “History of Colored Baseball.” He was inducted

into the Hall of Fame in 2006. The Revs will also highlight these local connections to baseball history through special jerseys Revolution players will wear for the game and auction off throughout the night to benefit the Goodridge Freedom Center. The one-of-a-kind design of the jerseys was inspired by jerseys of the Monarchs era. The team will further honor White by giving away Sol White baseball cards to the first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 5:30 p.m. The team’s game against the Long Island Ducks will begin at 6:30 p.m. The evening will end with the first post-game inside-the-park fireworks of the season. Tickets are available at www.yorkrevolution.com, by calling 717-801-HITS, and in the ticket office of PeoplesBank Park.

How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Valley Youth House is the catalyst for youths to achieve their desired future through genuine relationships that support families, ensure safe places, and build community connections. We envision a world in which every young person belongs to a nurturing community. Among Valley Youth House’s initiatives is #CouchesDontCount, an advocacy

campaign to raise awareness for the disproportionate rate of young people experiencing homelessness who are “couch surfing” or staying with friends or acquaintances. Some studies have suggested as high as 64 percent of youths experiencing homelessness are couch surfing as means of shelter. Valley Youth House believes that couches don’t count as stable housing for any young person experiencing homelessness. More can and should be done to support these young people in finding resources, shelter, and transitional housing, with the ultimate goal of achieving independence and stability. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? 15 staff members, 10 community volunteers. Did Valley Youth House participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes, Valley Youth House participated in the event last year. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Critical funds raised during this day of giving and philanthropy will help provide stable housing and the critical

life skills to young people in York County who are homeless or experiencing housing instability after exiting the foster care system. Funds will go toward Valley Youth House’s York County Rapid Rehousing (RRH) and Adolescents Achieving Independence (AAI) programs. This includes funding for furniture and utility/apartment start-up costs, education (SAT prep courses, certification program costs not covered by financial aid for programs such as a CNA certificate program, a forklift operator certification program, and more), and celebration banquet expenses to give an opportunity for all youths involved to attend an annual celebration banquet to recognize their achievements. RRH serves 13 youths per month, while AAI serves 136 youths per month. Give Local York gives us the opportunity to provide additional support and services not covered by our regular funding for youths in the programs. Community involvement is vital for youths preparing for adulthood for them to see that there is a larger network of people who care about their future.

Spotted Lanternfly Permit Trainings Set day, May 1. This course will teach employees what they need to know about the SLF through a live, in-person webinar. Attendees will learn the SLF lifecycle and how to identify each life stage, as well as what the SLF likes to eat and where it likes to lay its eggs. They will also learn how to find and destroy SLF and its egg masses, best practices for working in the quarantine zone, and the best ways to eliminate SLF from their property. Presentations will be given by Penn State Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. After the pre-

Penn State Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture have partnered to provide businesses an opportunity to train designated employees on how to comply with the spotted lanternfly (SLF) quarantine. The training will take place on Thursday, April 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. at 14 locations across the state, including the York County Annex, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York. Businesses operating in the SLF quarantine zone must have permits to move equipment and goods within and out of the zone. Enforcement of the permit rules will begin on Wednes-

sentations, a permit exam will be given. Participants will need to achieve a score greater than 70 percent in order to pass. Once a designated employee passes this course, his or her company will receive SLF permits for company vehicles. The designated employee must train fellow employees to work in the quarantine zone without inadvertently spreading these insects and endangering agriculture and commerce. To sign up for this free course, readers may call 877345-0691 or visit https:// extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training-for

-businesses and indicate which of the 14 locations they will attend. Capacity at the York location is 50 people. The course is also offered for free at https://extension.psu.edu/ spotted-lanternfly-permit -training. For more information about SLF quarantine permits and examples of who is required to obtain a permit, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/does -your-business-need-a-spottedlanternfly-permit. Information about the permitting process is available by emailing the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture at slfpermit@pa.gov.
