Libraries Begin Reopening

July4York Will Not Take Place Eventive, the event planning and production division of the York Revolution, recently announced that the 2020 July4York event has been canceled. Given the ongoing public safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions established by the

state to address those concerns, organizers found that it is not possible to host a large public event this year. Organizers said July4York will be back in 2021. For more information, readers may call 717-801-4489 or visit www.eventiveyork.com.

York County Libraries opened for curbside pickup of library materials on June 15. Members must reserve books in advance at www.yorklibraries.org and are then notified when the items are ready for pickup at the library. Members may also return checked out materials to library book drops. The decision to offer curbside service is in alignment with the direction and recommendations of the Office of Commonwealth

Libraries, Gov. Tom Wolf, Pennsylvania’s Department of Health, and the CDC. York County libraries will gradually reintroduce the breadth of library services while working to provide a safe library environment for employees and members. Staff have received training on recommended cleaning and disinfection procedures and will follow safe handling and quarantine protocols for returned library materials. Protective barriers have been

put in place, and staff will wear masks and other protective gear for personal and public safety. York County Libraries locations are asking that members wear masks or face coverings when utilizing the curbside pickup services. At several library locations, pickup of materials will be in the lobby. Only one member or family will be allowed inside at a time. These measures are required for everyone’s health and safety.

All physical library materials currently checked out through York County Libraries have been renewed until Wednesday, July 1, and no fines are being assessed on these items. Services at the Salem Square, Manchester Township, and Springettsbury Township libraries will not be offered during this initial phase of reopening. For additional details about curbside pickup, library hours, and more, readers may visit www.yorklibraries.org/reopening.

After a month of being open at half-capacity, York Day Nursery (YDN), 450 E. Philadelphia St., York, is slated to bring the rest of its students back on Monday, July 6, now that York County is in the green phase. Prior to July, classrooms were filled to half-capacity, as suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many of the CDC guidelines were already done at YDN, which is

nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and has the highest star rating from the Pennsylvania Keystone Stars. Students are scheduled for drop-off and pickup times in 15minute segments to minimize the number of people at the front of the building at any time. Both drop-off and pickup are being run by the same staff members daily. Some of the increased

COVID-19 precautions include the following. Drop-off and pickup happen in a drive-up situation. Parents pull up with the child in the car seat and staff checks each child’s temperature before the parents unbuckle them. Staff then escort the student to classes. At pickup, parents pull up and the student is escorted to the car. Student temperatures are taken mid-day. Temperatures for

all staff are taken prior to start of the shift. All meals and snacks are served in classrooms. Toys and centers are sanitized between each student’s turn. Outdoor playground equipment sanitized between classes. Hand sanitizer stations are installed throughout the hallways. Staff remain consistent in each classroom. Virtual tours and transition meetings are offered for future and current parents.

Smoke or Vape?

In recent weeks, Americans have turned to parks, trails, streams, and open space in historic numbers, as a respite from the chaos of the ongoing public health and economic crisis. In York County, the 21-mile York Heritage Rail Trail has become a magnet for county residents seeking fresh air, healthy recreation, and mental relaxation in a setting that lends itself to social distancing. As a result, the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) announced the launch of the York County Trail Towns program in five communities along the York Heritage Rail Trail. These communities are York, Seven Valleys, Glen Rock, Railroad, and New Freedom. The goal of the Trail Towns program is to use the Heritage Rail Trail as a platform for economic development by encouraging hundreds of thousands of annual trail users to venture off the trail and into the towns to patronize local

businesses. The ability to launch this program is made possible through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. State Sen. Kristin PhillipsHill helped secure a $300,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, allowing the YCEA to provide funding directly to projects that support the program, such as wayfinding, promotional materials, educational workshops for businesses, physical improvements, and other projects identified by each community. During the past several months, the YCEA - working in partnership with York County Parks, York County Rail Trail Authority, and Explore York conducted dozens of interviews, surveyed the trail-related services and assets in each community, and sketched out a process that will lead to each community officially becoming a York County Trail Town. This summer,

residents will be engaged in conducting inventories of their towns intended to gather feedback on their community from the perspective of a trail user. York County celebrated new sections of the Heritage Rail Trail in 2019 and anticipates the entire trail completion in 2021. YCEA’s Trail Towns program is part of an overall strategy to boost the economies of the small, historic communities throughout York County. Although the first phase is limited to five communities, future phases of the Trail Towns program could support communities along the Hanover Trolley Trail, such as Hanover and Spring Grove, and communities like Wrightsville, which is emerging as a recreational hub at the crossroads of the Susquehanna River, Northwest River Trail, and Mason-Dixon Trail. To learn more about the York County Trail Towns program, readers may visit www.yorkcounty trailtowns.com.

Mezza Receives Golden Apple Award

Local Graduate Receives Honor U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Leary Kyle Reichart-Warfel, who graduated from York Catholic High School in 2012, will forever be linked with the Joy family of Virginia for his actions on June 15, 2018. Reichart-Warfel and three fellow Marines were stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., enjoying a free day at Atlantic Beach when they were approached by someone who alerted them to a family struggling in the water. Without hesitation, the four Marines swam out over 150 yards to rescue the father, mother, and twin daughters who were caught in a riptide. Others helped, but

the four Marines were the only ones to risk their own lives and enter the water. The Marines instructed the family members to float on their backs as they were pulled to shore. Three of the family members survived the riptide, but despite CPR efforts administered by the Marines, the father perished. The mother, Allison Joy, only had the Marines’ names from the police report. She searched for them throughout the bases located in North Carolina and was able to track them down to express her thanks. In the summer of 2019, she reunited with the

Marines and presented them with a plaque of appreciation. She also established the Float Don’t Fight Foundation to increase awareness of the dangers of riptides and to encourage beach-goers to include a flotation device with their beach gear. She was also instrumental in relaying the story to the Marines’ superiors. On Jan. 28, Reichart-Warfel and his three fellow Marines had the rare honor of being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal - the highest non-combat medal for individuals who have undertaken a life-threatening risk in an act of heroism.

According to Sgt. Maj. Joshua Wruble, senior enlisted leader of Marine Air Control Squadron 2, criteria for the award is strict, and documentation such as notarized witness statements, diagrams, and input from first responders is required. Additionally, the awards can only be approved by the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. During the medal ceremony, attended by over 500 Marines, Maj. General Karsten Heckl, commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, recognized ReichartWarfel for leading and orchestrating the rescue.

Cecelia Mezza students through classes, extracurricular music clubs, and community events, she plays the violin in the York College Community Orchestra, cantors for St. Mary’s Church, and is a member of the St. Mary’s Church Choir. Mezza said she was inspired to become an educator during high school. Mezza will receive the award at a ceremony to be scheduled after the stay-at-home order has been lifted.

First Responders Receive Funding Fire and EMS companies in York County received $788,177 through the Fire Company Grant and Emergency Medical Service Grant programs during fiscal year 2019-20. The funding will aid fire and EMS companies as they experience the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many of the companies to sideline fundraising efforts. The grants may be used for construction or renovation of a unit’s station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training, or debt reduction. The program is funded solely from state gaming proceeds. The grant funding will be used to help fire and EMS companies with added costs they have encountered due to COVID-19, as well as the loss of fundraising opportunities due to the stay-at-home orders and other mitigation efforts. The funds would be distributed in the same manner as the annual Fire Company Grant Program and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program, respectively.

Fifteen new trees are now part of the landscaping at the York City Welcome Triangle across from the WellSpan York Hospital. Members of the Preserve Planet Earth Committee and the Rotary Club of York, along with family and friends, planted the trees on May 2.

Jennifer Geubtner-May (left) and Al Sykes prepared a hole for one of the new trees at the York City Welcome Triangle.

Brian Mummert (left) and JT Hand helped plant a tree at the York City Welcome Triangle.

Fifteen trees were planted at the York City Welcome Triangle across from the WellSpan York Hospital on May 2. The trees were planted by members of the Preserve Planet Earth Committee and the Rotary Club of York, along with family and friends. The trees included a variety of species, such as October glory, white oak, service berry, red maple, and black gum. The planting teams dug the holes; removed rocks, bricks, and concrete; and then mulched the individual tree planting locations and the welcome center stone area and water feature. Organizers recognized Rotarian Brian Mummert of W & S Landscape Services for procuring the trees and providing the mulch. Additionally, the Garden Club of York financially supported the project.
