The SBA reopened the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) and Advance Program. Additionally, the SBA implemented revisions for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to reflect changes made in the PPP Flexibility Act of 2020. The EIDL program portal has been reopened to all eligible applicants experiencing economic impacts due to COVID-19. SBA’s EIDL program offers long-term, low-interest assistance for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. These loans can provide vital economic support to help alleviate temporary loss of revenue. EIDL assistance can be used to cover payroll and inventory, pay debts, or fund other expenses. EIDL Advance will provide up to $10,000 or $1,000 per employee of emergency economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing temporary difficulties, and these emergency grants do not have to be repaid. To learn more and apply, readers may visit www.sba.gov/disaster.

Changes have also been made for PPP funding. The revisions have resulted in a more borrowerfriendly loan forgiveness application for businesses that have already received PPP funding. In addition to revising the full forgiveness application, SBA also published a new EZ version of the forgiveness application that applies to borrowers who are self-employed and have no employees, did not reduce the salaries or wages of their employees by more than 25% and did not reduce the number of hours of their employees, or experienced reductions in business activity as a result of health directives related to COVID-19 and did not reduce the salaries or wages of their employees by more than 25%. “Hike For H2O” Virtual Event Planned The Hike for H2O has begun and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 16. The virtual hiking and fundraising event gets people outdoors on a trail while creating sustainable change for those in need of access to clean, easily accessible water. More than 2 billion people live without access to clean water, according to organizers. On average in Africa, women and children walk four miles each day to gather dirty water that often causes disease and death for the members of their communities. In recognition of this distance, the Hike for H20 requires participants to walk at least four miles, anywhere and anytime through Aug. 16. Proceeds will benefit nonprofits Water for Good in

Central African Republic, Let Them LOL in Sierra Leone, and Global Samaritans in Zambia. All proceeds and donations will directly benefit well drilling projects. The event seeks 365 participants who will each raise $100. The total of $36,500 will provide lifelong clean water sources in three communities, giving 7,000 people the gift of lifelong clean water. There is a registration fee, which includes a wicking shirt and event patch. Participants can set up a fundraiser on the registration platform. Participants are also asked to take photos during their walk and post the photos to social media to raise awareness. For details and registration, readers may visit www.hikeforh2o.org.

Giant Completes Pollinator Field

Women’s Group Plans Summer Social The York Women’s Association (YWA) will host a summer social on Monday, July 27, at 6 p.m. at William Kain Park, 247 Hess Farm Road, York. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to

educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment

and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local

farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

Students Create Doughnut Flavors First Responders Receive Funding West York Area School District second-graders at Lincolnway Elementary recently participated in a unique writing activity coordinated by teacher Christine McKee. The class was paired with Emingee’s Fastnachts and Coffee, located at Morningstar Market in Thomasville, and tasked with creating a new doughnut flavor and submitting a persuasive writing piece about why their idea was the best. Bakery co-owner Melanie Cornman read the 24 entries and chose the ideas presented by students Jaydaci Phillips and Brianna Lindenmuth. The student-created doughnut flavors were made and sold at the bakery on May 30 and 31. Jaydaci and Brianna were recognized on May 31. Jaydaci’s entry was called “Holy Sweet Cannoli” and based on a dessert from her favorite pizza shop. The powdered doughnut features a sweet cannoli cream filling with a drizzle of caramel and miniature chocolate chips on top. Brianna’s entry was

Fire and EMS companies in York County received $788,177 through the Fire Company Grant and Emergency Medical Service Grant programs during fiscal year 2019-20. The funding will aid fire and EMS companies as they experience the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many of the companies to sideline fundraising efforts. The grants may be used for

construction or renovation of a unit’s station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training, or debt reduction. The program is funded solely from state gaming proceeds. Local first responders can apply for additional funding after the House of Representatives approved legislation to allocate $50 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act

dollars. The grant funding will be used to help fire and EMS companies with added costs they have encountered due to COVID-19, as well as the loss of fundraising opportunities due to the stay-at-home orders and other mitigation efforts. The funds would be distributed in the same manner as the annual Fire Company Grant Program and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program, respectively.

Through Friday, July 31, UStor-It will accept donations for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY). Items can be dropped off at either U-Stor-It location - 1331 N. Sherman St., York, or 2786 S. Queen St., Dallastown. Items needed by CHOY include pens and pencils, both regular and colored; highlighters; crayons; markers; notebook paper; calculators; rulers; glue sticks; backpacks; and composition notebooks, with the exception of spiral notebooks. CHOY was established in 1865 to provide services to the orphans of the York County community. During the 1970s, the agency saw that it needed to re-engineer its services to meet the needs of the children and youths it served by providing smaller living situations. The agency responded by developing group homes and foster care. CHOY, through the work of its board and staff members, has

evolved through the years. The evolutionary process has taken the agency from the simple form of an orphanage to that of a continuum of services ranging from emergency shelter for safe refuge for abused and neglected children to state-of-the-art residential treatment facilities that offer therapeutic intervention to children, youths and their families who are working on complicated mental health situations. In addition, there are a variety of capacities like schools and group homes, each focused on its effort to improve the lives of children and families. More information about the Children’s Home of York can be found at www.childrens homeofyork.org. For more information about U-Stor-It, readers may call 717-840-9369 or email ustoryork@comcast.net.

A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the

field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these

Teachers Win Impact Awards In partnership with Rotary District 7390, WITF announced the winners of the Teacher Impact Awards on June 8. From a field of nearly 250 nominations, one teacher or team of teachers was selected from each of the seven counties within the Rotary district’s coverage area. The teachers were honored for their dedication to their students and community. Rotary District 7390 established the Teacher Impact Awards in 2005 with the goal to promote teaching and learning in its coverage area. COVID-19 added some challenges to the awards’ timeline. The nominations, which were received by Feb. 28, were scheduled to be judged in March. Winners would have been announced in April, with WITF television producers visiting each classroom and conducting interviews. A celebratory banquet was scheduled for May, where teachers and families could see the video features before the television special broadcast in June. In the new school year, WITF plans to work with teachers and schools to create a 30-minute “Teacher Impact Awards program to air on WITF in November. Then WITF and Rotary District 7390 will celebrate both the 2020 and 2021 Teacher Impact Award winners at a banquet in May 2021. WITF will accept

Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented

pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
