Garber, Dougherty Receive Grants P.E.O. Chapter CF recently presented Program for Continuing Education (P.C.E.) grants to two central Pennsylvania women. The recipients are Anita Garber of Bainbridge and Sandra Dougherty of York. Chapter CF recommended both recipients for the grants. The P.C.E. was established in 1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the United States and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and, if applicable, their families. P.C.E. grants usually range from $1,000 to $5,000. Garber and Dougherty each qualified for their grants on the basis of need, in honor of their returning to school to continue their education, and in recognition of their desire to improve their ability to support themselves.

Garber, a student at Messiah College, is taking courses to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in music worship. She plans to pursue graduate studies and eventually earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in music. Dougherty studies at Elizabethtown College and is majoring in business administration. She also plans to pursue graduate studies and eventually earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in business administration. Garber and Dougherty will use their grants for tuition, fees, and book expenses as they complete their studies. By combining grants, scholarships, and income from jobs, they each expect to complete requirements for their degrees by the year 2020 with no student debt. P.E.O. stands for philanthropic educational organization. P.E.O. is an interna-

tional organization whose members celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, and loans, and through the stewardship of Cottey College in Nevada, Miss.; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. Every year, members of P.E.O. chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada recommend qualified women and help them submit applications for the organization’s seven competitive grants or loans. It is not necessary to be a member of P.E.O. to apply for any of P.E.O.’s grants or loans. More information about P.E.O. International is available at www.peo international.org. Information about P.E.O. in Pennsylvania is available at www.peopa.org. To learn more about Chapter CF, readers may call chapter president Sharon Hopkins at 717-840-9736.
