Libraries To Celebrate Reading Initiative Children’s author and illustrator Lindsay Barrett George will be at the Penn State York Conference Center from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, for the “Grade One at the Library” (GOAL) Celebration. The Conference Center is located at 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York. George is coming to York to present a drawing demonstration and to autograph books for York County first-graders who signed up for the GOAL program. The family-friendly GOAL Celebration is free to attend and open to the public. Activities will include storytelling by Beth Rebert from Fun-In-It Storytelling and face painting by Changing Faces 4 Fun.
This is the third year for George as the designated GOAL author. Children’s authors Tedd Arnold, Will Hillenbrand, and Peter Catalanotto preceded her in this role. Each featured author is involved for three years and comes to York to inspire children to read, draw, and learn from the world around them. Among her accomplishments, George was selected as the first featured author for Pennsylvania’s One Book Every Young Child program in 2006. She is the author of numerous books, including “Maggie’s Ball,” “Inside Mouse, Outside Mouse,” “Alfred Digs,” “In the Woods: Who’s Been Here?” and “In the Garden: Who’s Been Here?”
The GOAL program connects children and their parents to the books, resources, and learning opportunities available for free at the library. PeoplesBank has sponsored this basic literacy program since its inception in 2008 with a goal of getting a library card in the hands of every firstgrade student in York County. The GOAL celebration is held in conjunction with event partner The Lee R. Glatfelter Library at Penn State York. Questions can be directed to York County Libraries youth services program manager Lisa Schmittle at 717-849-6964. York County Libraries includea 13 libraries that provide the latest in print and electronic

Rieder’s “Slumberina” Book Published Vicki Bries Rieder of Seven Valleys has released her first children’s picture book, “Slumberina.” The book was published by StoryBook Genius Publishing. “Slumberina” was inspired by Rieder’s daughter’s anxiety at bedtime. For many years, Rieder and her husband searched for a solution to help their daughter relax at bedtime. Then, their daughter lost a tooth and the Tooth Fairy left her a special note, which offered the girl a way to self-soothe when she was afraid at night. Rieder shared the contents of the Tooth Fairy note with her mother in Iowa, and her mother suggested that Rieder turn the note into a story in order to help other children with similar sleep issues. Rieder is an Air Force veteran who attended Park University. She and her husband have been married for nearly 28 years. They have five children. Rieder recently appeared on the Author Spotlight segment of ABC 27 Good Day PA and completed a tour of school and library readings in her home state of Iowa. She was a featured author at the Nov. 2 York Book Expo at the Wisehaven Event Center and plans to
Vicki Bries Rieder schedule more area book readings and signings. “Slumberina” is available via a number of online stores, including Amazon, Target, Books-A-Million, and Barnes and Noble. For more information, readers may check out the “Sleep With Slumberina” Facebook page and visit www.Slumber Books.com.
