Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the
United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. YCCF provides grants to increase highquality and forward-thinking options to help seniors live as they choose in their community. YCCF’s Hahn Home Fund supports Embracing Aging, which began with the vision of one woman, Anna Gardner, who died in 1913 and gifted her estate to help care for older women in the community. More than 100 years later, YCCF is carrying out her legacy. More information about YCCF is available at www.yccf.com.
The York County Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Bell Socialization Services Inc. have teamed up to create The Higher Standard Project, a privately funded recovery home for veterans undergoing treatment for substance abuse or trauma. The Higher Standard will be home for up to six veterans capable of self-support while undergoing treatment in York County Veterans Wellness Court or veterans released from York County Prison by way of long-term, inpatient treatment at a VA Medical Center. Priority will be given to combat veterans. The home’s aim will be to provide veterans the opportunity to recover together in a residence that promotes wellness and the values of military service. The project will seek the highest standard of national accreditation from the Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Following accreditation, the project will expand into other communities to meet the needs of veterans throughout York County. The project advisory board was formed in August to oversee the project. The board consists of Veterans Wellness Court mentors, alumni, and adult probation staff, along with representatives of the federal VA judicial outreach program, Bell Socialization, York County Veterans Outreach, and York County Veterans Affairs. The Higher Standard is privately funded through donations to York County Veterans in Need Fund. Donations may be made by visiting www.gofundme.com/ the-higher-standard-project. For information about contributing by check, readers may contact Veterans Affairs at 717-771-9218 or yorkvet@yorkcountypa.gov.

Holiday Open House Fundraiser Set A Holiday Open House will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the home of Nadine and Brad Askey, 801 Grandview Road, York. Through the event, the Askey family, whose son, Bradly, is autistic and had his dream funded in 2014 through Sunshine Foundation, hopes to pay it forward to help another young person have a dream fulfilled. All proceeds from the event will benefit Sunshine Foundation. Specifically, funds will support Eliza, who lives in Wrightsville. Eliza is a 15-year old with Down syndrome. Her dream is to visit the theme parks in Florida. The open house will feature a fully decorated holiday home, face painting for children, baked goods for sale, and crafters selling their products. A prize drawing featuring items donated by the crafters will be held at 3:30 p.m., and winners need not be present. Sun-
shine Foundation president Kate Sample will be in attendance. There is a set price for admission for adults. Children age 10 and under will be admitted for free. To purchase tickets or become a sponsor, readers may contact Nadine at 717-318-5202 or saphirelake@comcast.net. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Those who purchase tickets in advance will be entered into a “Date Night” drawing. Sunshine Foundation’s sole purpose is to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages 3 through 18 whose families cannot fulfill their dream requests due to the financial strain that the child’s illness may cause. To learn more about Sunshine Foundation, readers may visit www.sunshinefoundation.org or contact Linda Staley at 215-3964770, ext. 103, or Linda@sun shinefoundation.org.
A Holiday Open House will take place in York on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help fund the dream of Eliza through Sunshine Foundation. Eliza lives in Wrightsville.
