BBBS Takes Part In Acts Of Kindness Bigs and Littles in Big Brothers Big Sisters of York and Adams Counties’ (BBBS) mentoring programs participated in 10,000 Acts of Kindness on Nov. 17. Matches met at Big Brothers Big Sisters’ office in downtown York to write thank-you letters to be sent to local volunteer firefighters and to volunteer firefighters in California who have been fighting wildfires. Members of Rescue Fire Company No. 1 in Dallastown came to the event to talk about their work, give fire safety advice, and answer questions. An anonymous donor provided pizza for everyone, and a local entertainment venue welcomed participants afterward. The 10,000 Acts of Kindness celebration will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019, in Penn Park. The multicultural, multifaith, nonpartisan and all-inclusive unity festival will celebrate the growth York has made over the past 50 years. The event will feature 1.5 miles of tables in an attempt to earn the Guinness Book of Records’ title for the longest table in the world. To get a seat at the table, one has to perform an act of kindness for someone else. More information about BBBS is available at www.bbbsyorkadams.org.

Turkey Donations To Benefit Local Families York County Food Bank partnered with six area churches for the first-ever Bring Your Turkey to Church Day on Dec. 9. In celebration of the holidays, the purpose of Bring Your Turkey to Church Day was to help to feed local residents in need. Members of the following churches brought frozen turkeys with them to the service: Chapel Church, 3050 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion; St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 25 Springettsbury Road, York; Unitarian Universalist Church of York, 925 S. George St., York; St. John’s Blymire Church, 1009 Blymire Road, Dallastown; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 947 N. George St., York; and Trinty United Church of Christ, 32 W. Market St., York. York County Food Bank volunteers were slated to pick up the turkeys from the participating
churches and bring them to the food bank. Community members who would still like to donate a turkey may bring it to the food bank, 254 W. Princess St., York, before Friday, Dec. 14. All of the turkeys collected will be used to help to provide 1,600 holiday meals packed through the Food Bank’s Give A Meal program. The Give A Meal program partners with 10 school districts throughout York County to assure that no family goes to bed hungry this holiday season. Holiday meals are packed and distributed to the school districts, which then give them to families in their area who are in need of a holiday meal. County Community Foundation announced the launch of the Carolyn E. Steinhauser Prize, recognizing the contributions of its founder, at a luncheon on Nov. 8. The prize was conferred on its namesake and inaugural recipient, Carolyn E. Steinhauser, at a ceremony at Marketview Arts in York. The award was created by the Women’s Giving Circle of York County Community Foundation in 2017 and honors individuals or organizations whose contributions to community-building in York County have been marked by singular excellence, reflecting Steinhauser’s decades of influence and leadership. It recognizes achievement in efforts that advance strategic philanthropy, quality community education, responsible sustainability, patient capital for informed risk-taking and innovation, and collaborations that result in collective impact. The award includes a grant for $1,000, which awardees can direct to the nonprofit of their choice. Nominees may self-select or be recommended by others. The award may be conferred annually, but it will be conferred at least once every two years. Steinhauser founded the York County Community Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle in 2003 with women from the York community. It pools the dues from approximately 85 women to provide seed money for community projects. Collectively, the group has invested more than $750,000 in strategic community projects and helped to leverage millions more. Steinhauser previously servied as the YWCA’s executive director. Later, she served on the board of the York Foundation (now York County Community Foundation) and ultimately became its first executive director. She also served as the first non-attorney president of the York County Bar Foundation, was a longtime trustee of York College of Pennsylvania, and still helps to oversee the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP).

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the
United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.

Returning for the ninth season in a row, Give-A-Tree cards from the Arbor Day Foundation offer a holiday giving opportunity with conservation benefits that will endure for generations. Again this year, Give-A-Tree cards can be purchased individually and with customized text for a set price. Also, purchasing the Arbor Day Foundation’s coffee helps preserve rain forests in Central and South America. The foundation’s coffee, a part of the Rain Forest Rescue program, is shadegrown under the canopy of Latin American rain forests.
The foundation’s Trees in Celebration program allows the giver to honor loved ones while supporting conservation efforts. For each dollar donated, one tree is planted in a high-need forest, and recipients are given a certificate showing them where the trees were planted. In addition, with foundation membership, recipients will be sent 10 free trees, which will be shipped at the right time of year for planting. Membership levels vary and begin with a set minimum contribution. For more information, readers may visit www.arborday.org.
