Plans are currently under way to construct a veterans’ memorial, dedicated to all veterans who served the United States in the armed forces, at the new Dover Area High School. The project is being spearheaded by Brad Jacobs, a 1962 graduate of Dover High School, who served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as a commissioned officer. “As a former member of the armed forces of the United States, I think it is appropriate that the Dover Area School District establish a veterans’ memorial to recognize and honor all veterans, including Dover alumni and staff, for the sacrifice of all who served,” stated Jacobs. Last January, Jacobs pitched the idea to create a veterans’ memorial to school district administrators and the board of school directors. “Back in 2018, they were opening up bids to build a new high school. That’s when I said to the administration and superintendent that this would be a good time to a build a veterans’ memorial,” Jacobs explained. When the plan was approved, a committee was established, with Jacobs as the chair, to make the memorial a reality. The committee is

composed of other high school alumni, current staff members and district administrators. In coordination with the Dover Eagle Foundation, a nonprofit organization, the committee began a fundraising campaign to offset the costs of construction, estimated to be about $90,000. The memorial design was created by Murphy & Dittenhafer of York. “Frank Dittenhafer did all the work (on the design) pro bono. He is a Dover graduate, and his father was a World War II serviceman,” Jacobs noted. The memorial will be constructed on a grass plot near the front door of the high school, which is located behind the current Dover Area Immediate School, 4500 Intermediate Ave., Dover. “When you come in the driveway, it will be very visible,” Jacobs noted. The memorial will feature a granite pylon for each of the branches of the United States Armed Forces. The front of each pylon will include the name of the branch, the branch’s seal in bronze and the branch’s motto. The back of the pylons will be etched with American flags. One side wall will contain an inspirational quote, and the dark pylon in the front will contain the contractors’ names along with other major

contributors to the memorial. The black granite will come from a company in Chester County, as well as Baughman Memorial Works of Dover. Company president Donald Baughman is a Dover graduate. The white granite will be shipped from Vermont. Individuals can make financial donations and materials donations and also purchase inscribed pavers of dedication “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” at the site. All donations are tax exempt in coordination with

the Dover Eagle Foundation. Initially, the memorial was scheduled to open in November, but because of the pandemic, the dedication has been postponed until November 2021, with the capital campaign continuing through 2021. Brochures about the project, which include a form to purchase pavers, are available at local businesses. More information and brochures are also available by emailing Jacobs at bcj402@ verizon.net.

York Factory Whistle Tradition To Continue

Mailed outside our circulation area for $36.00 a year.

BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Factory Whistle Concert will again fill the early Christmas morning air in York on Friday, Dec. 25. The event will be presented by the Engineering Society of York, the York Factory Whistle Concert Committee, York County Community Foundation, 240 Arch, United Rentals, the York Water Company, and IWM International. The concert will begin at 12:15 a.m. Through the donations of community business-

es and residents, Don Ryan will present the 25-minute concert using the variablepitched whistle now installed at 240 Arch St., York. Ryan will be celebrating his 66th anniversary in performing concert. This will be at least the 132nd year that a whistle has been played in York on Christmas morning. For the sixth year in the event’s history, people around the world will be able to view the Ryan family play-

ing the whistle by accessing the livestream at www.york pafactorywhistle.com, searching for @YorkPAWhistle on Facebook, or downloading the Factory Whistle Master app. Streaming will begin at midnight. Due to COVID restrictions, organizers ask that listeners do not drive to the whistle site this year, but that they remain in their home or car and enjoy the concert in a socially distant manner. The

whistle site will be blocked off this year and not accessible to pedestrians. Practice concerts are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19, at noon. The whistle can easily be heard within a 5-mile radius of the concert location, and depending upon the wind, the whistle has reportedly been heard from as far away as 10 miles. For more information, readers may call Ryan at 717755-0636.
