Elks Invite Youths To Enter Contests
Program To Discuss Charity Scams with a woman who rallied her community to raise money for a friend who lied about needing cash for cancer treatment. The program will discuss how to avoid being fooled by fake charities. Participants will get tools that will help them tell
which charitable appeals are legitimate and feel comfortable giving to worthy causes. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. For details on the program, readers may contact Chip Hoover at 717-792-3153 or chip08@aol.com.
The York Elks group is participating in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks’ Drug Awareness Program. The program consists of three contests designed to help educate youths on the dangers of illegal drugs. All posters, essays, and videos should relate to the theme “Drugs Take Away …” The poster contest is open to children in grades three, four, and five. Participants must create a poster on paper or poster board up to 12 by 24 inches. The theme must be on the poster along with a picture that represents the theme. Participants must draw their posters themselves. The essay contest is open to children in grades six, seven, and eight. The essays must be typed and printed on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. The essays must be no more than 250 words, and the theme “Drugs Take Away …” must be noted on the essay. The video contest is open to pre-high school, high school, and post-graduation. Participants work as individuals or in groups.

Videos should be two to five minutes in length and be submitted on a flash drive. Submissions for all contests are due on Friday, Dec. 28, to the York Lodge. All entries must include a personal information page containing the contestant’s name, address, phone number, school, and present grade. All entries become the property of the Elks. A certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. The York Lodge will then select one winner from each contest grade level to move on to district competition. The winners that move on to district competition will be notified, as release forms will need to be completed. Winners of the district competition will move on to state competition. The winners of the state competition will be announced in April 2019 and will be invited to receive their prize at the Pennsylvania Elks Spring Convention, to be held in May in Harrisburg. Parks Department Posts Activities County Park on Thursday, Dec. 27, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children age 8 and up may join with a birding mentor from the York Audubon Society to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Mentors will lead teams while hiking, explain binoculars, and help participants identify birds and submit their finds to eBird. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Dog License Deadline Posted York County residents can purchase 2019 dog licenses at the York County treasurer’s office. State law requires all dogs three months and older to be licensed by Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. An annual dog license will be discounted if the animal is spayed or neutered. Lifetime licenses are available for dogs with permanent identifications. Older adults and persons with disabilities may purchase a license at a discounted rate. The owner’s contact information
is used by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Dog Law, local police and shelters to identify lost dogs and get them home safely. People who do not have licenses for their dogs may be fined up to $300. Licenses may purchased online, by mail or in person at the treasurer’s office, which is on the second floor of the York County Administrative Center, 28 E. Market St., York, or at any one of the 16 satellite sub-agents throughout York County. More

New Hope Ministries Christmas Eve Receives Donation Services Set
Molly Helmstetter (left), director of development with New Hope Ministries, received a donation from Kristen Heisey, director of marketing and client experience at PeoplesBank. The donation will support the purchase of a truck for New Hope’s mobile pantry program. The mobile pantry provides New Hope Ministries the ability to reach more diverse low-income communities with food and other stability programming. Currently, the mobile pantry visits the communities of Abbottstown, East Berlin, Enola, Littlestown, and York Springs once a month.
Light Display Fundraiser Slated The Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors organization will benefit from the Light Up the Night Christmas light display at 205-235 Krone Road, Lewisberry. The lights will be on from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation has planned several hikes, along with the Kids Christmas Bird Count. The parks department will host two Marshmallow Hikes at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York. Church Decorated For Season State Route Will Be Renumbered

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is renumbering State Route 295 as State Route 297 through Newberry and Conewago townships in northern York County. PennDOT York County highway maintenance sign crews will be completing the necessary updates to the existing route signing. This will include any existing directional signing for roads that intersect the state route. This work is expected to be completed in December. Upon the completion of a recent construction project on Interstate 95 in Bucks County, a portion of the existing limited access roadway was renamed Interstate 295. Due to the potential conflict involved in having two major Pennsylvania traffic routes designated as 295, it was decided that State Route 295 in York County would be renumbered State Route 297. Church Plans Concert, Holiday Services Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Lane, York, has scheduled its sixth annual Carols for a Cause concert along with Christmas Eve services. Carols for a Cause will take place on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. The event is being organized by a few of Zion’s young adults who feel drawn to a cause. The purpose of the event is to raise money for Olivia’s House, an organization that helps support grieving children in the York area. The concert will include a variety of performances as well as a candlelight vigil. A light reception will follow. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be received for Olivia’s House. Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the
United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. Cultural Alliance Holds Listening Project Leading up to its 20th anniversary, the Cultural Alliance of York County wants to understand how it can best support and strengthen arts and culture in York County and position the organization for strength and sustainability into the next 20 years. To accomplish this, the group has worked with design thinking consultant Erin McGlaughlin to interview donors, volunteers, funded partners, non-funded partners, and community leaders over the past year to determine how the Cultural Alliance can meet the needs of the York community now and in the years to come. The Alliance is now sharing those findings and inviting the residents of York County to engage in an open dialogue on arts and culture through its online cultural listening project site at www.future-culturalyork.org. Unveiled at its annual public meeting on Nov. 13, the listening project site details the project methods, findings, and ways for members of the public to contribute their voices to the conversation. Donation Drive Posted The Salvation Army will benefit from an annual holiday donation drive being organized by Sheetz For the Kidz. During the month of December, customers can donate at checkout at all Sheetz store locations. One
hundred percent of customer donations will go directly to support the children. Each of the 582 stores will support 16 children from its local community by partnering with The Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families. Employees will volunteer their time to shop for items, wrap items and host holiday parties for the children and their families. At the parties, Santa will greet the children and present them with new toys, along with clothes and other items meeting basic needs. The children and their families will enjoy food, crafts, games and opportunities to take pictures with Santa. PennWorks Initiative Begins Stage The PennWorks Certificated Integrated Competitive Employment Readiness Initiative for youths and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities recently began a significant stage of its pilot. Ten student learners from Central York High School are engaged in volunteer job exploration ex periences at SpiriTrust Lutheran Assisted Living along with career preparation classroom education. Central York has an additional 10 students who are preparing to enter the PennWorks program in the spring. An additional 18 student learners from the Spring Grove School District will embark on their job-shadowing experiences later in the school year. By joining explicit instruction, workplace visits, and the ability to obtain certifications and competencies, PennWorks offers a pathway to integrated, competitive employment for students and adults by supporting them in becoming active, core members of their communities. Launched by PennCares Support Services earlier this year, PennWorks is delivering training, job exploration, certification, and employment readiness supports in collaboration with The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), Central York School District, Spring Grove Area School District, Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12, The Center for Independent Living Opportunities, and consultancy XtraGlobex Inc. This initiative brings together partners from the business, education, and human services sectors to create a pathway for individuals with disabilities to gain and maintain competitive and integrated employment with certification that is portable. PennWorks is funded by Penn Cares Support Services with the objective of preparing youths and adults with disabilities to work in an integrated competitive setting, with the same career potential, earning power, and opportunities to make choices in their employment. Approximately 300 students are scheduled to receive degrees from York College at the Wednesday, Dec. 19, winter commencement ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center’s M&T Field House. Alumnus and former trustee George Shorb will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and will present the address. Josh DeSantis, director of the Master of Education program and recipient of the Presidential Award for Teaching and Mentoring Excellence, will also address the audience. Shorb entered York Junior College in 1965. He was drafted while a student and served in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division. He received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in Vietnam. In 1969, Shorb returned home to York and enrolled in what had become York College. An accomplished athlete, he played soccer and was the college’s first player coach on the golf team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management in 1972, making him a member of the first graduating class of the four-year institution. Shorb’s first job after graduating was with the Glatfelter Paper Company. He later worked in international sales as president of the Atlantic Paper Company in Philadelphia, and he is currently president and owner of First Capital Paper Company, which he established in 2005. Shorb was the first president of the York College Collegiate Council and later served as a trustee for 24 years before

retiring last spring. During his time on the board, he chaired multiple committees, including finance, student life, and greens and grounds. His leadership was instrumental in the efforts to launch the West Campus expansion and to construct the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. Shorb’s passion for education, athletics and service extends beyond his involvement with York College. He is a past chair of the York Catholic school board, served for 10 years as the chair of York Youth Soccer, and currently serves as chair of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center advisory board, most recently assisting in the $7 million capital campaign to update and renovate the facility. An assistant professor of education, DeSantis teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in education technology, research methods, and curriculum design. As an education technologist, he researches, publishes, and presents on various topics including prekindergarten through 12thgrade technology integration programs, preparing new teachers to use technology, and augmented reality in the classroom. DeSantis earned his undergraduate degree in social studies education and master’s degree in applied history at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and he received his Doctor of Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Before accepting a faculty position at York College, he taught social studies in the Susquenita School District.

YCCF Supports Community The York County Community Foundation (YCCF) has announced that in a recent analysis of the 850 community foundations across the country, YCCF was ranked in the top 15 percent in asset size and the fourth largest in Pennsylvania. Donors make contributions to YCCF, a nonprofit organization, and those gifts are invested to grow and generate a return. With the earnings, YCCF awards grants to help build York County. Teams are being sought for YorVoice, a singing competition /talent showcase event that will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019. The Cultural Alliance of York County is now accepting team submissions for YorVoice, a singing competition/talent showcase event that will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. YorVoice will highlight the talent of people in York County and feature a celebrity panel of judges. One team will emerge as the YorVoice champion, and one team will earn the People’s Choice recognition. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up to compete. Singing teams can have a minimum of one and a maximum of 20 members. Teams will perform one song of their choice with their own live band, a cappella, or with pre-recorded music they provide. Song selection is first-come, firstserved. No duplicate songs will be permitted. In order to compete, each team must submit a team registration and contribute a set minimum

Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center www.customercare.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. 2018-19 LIHEAP Applications Open The start of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process for the 2018-19 season has begun. LIHEAP provides assistance for home heating bills to keep low-income Pennsylvanians warm and safe during the winter months. Assistance is available for renters and homeowners. Crisis and regular LIHEAP applications are available now through Friday, April 12, 2019. During the 2017-18 LIHEAP season, 344,008 households statewide received nearly $116 million in LIHEAP cash benefits. These households received an average season benefit of $337. LIHEAP benefits are paid directly to the utility company. Consumers are encouraged to enroll in LIHEAP and to explore other assistance programs available from their utilities and various nonprofit
groups. Combined, these many different resources help hundreds of thousands of households and families across the commonwealth every year. The program’s goal is to prevent LIHEAP customers from entering the winter season with shut-off utilities. Eligibility for the 2018-19 LIHEAP season is set at 150 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. Online applications for LIHEAP can be completed at www. compass.state.pa.us. The American Heart Association (AHA) offers several tips to keep everyone focused on how they can eat smart, move more, and be well this holiday season. Hosts can challenge themselves to offer some delicious and healthier options using healthier recipes and cooking tips. 3. Keep the family active. Everyone can take advantage of cooler weather to get moving outdoors. 4. Sip smarter. We are so grateful for the continued support from our wonderful community, but most of all we’d like to thank our amazing staff.
York Day Nursery recently held its annual spaghetti dinner, which was attended by 200 students and their families.
We would like to say thank you to all of our dedicated staff for making a difference in the lives of all our residents. We are so grateful for all that they do and all of their constant devotion, compassion and their tireless effort in patient care.
