Tree Lighting Celebration Set For December 2
Manheim’s 16th annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is set to take place in Manheim Market Square on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Dec. 3. Sponsored by the Manheim Lions Club, this year’s festivities will include performances from Cricket’s Performing Arts and the Manheim Brass Band. Attendees may participate in caroling and visit with Santa Claus. Children are invited to have their photo taken with St. Nick, as well. The local Cub Scout pack will host a craft table for youngsters, and a local business will set up a photo booth, as well. Food will be available for purchase, and attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots collection box sponsored by Northwest EMS. The Friends of the Manheim Community Library Present
Proceeds from the home tour will go toward scholarships for girls at Manheim Central High School, Secret Santa gifts for local families in need, and downtown beautification projects, as well as the Women’s Club’s ongoing support of local organizations, including the Manheim Community Library, Manheim Food Pantry, The Danner Home, and Pleasant View Retirement Community. In the spring of 2017, the Women’s Club of Manheim awarded grants to All Pro Dads, Manheim Historical Society, Aaron’s Acres, Manheim Central High School post prom, the Manheim Community Library Summer Reading Program, and the Manheim Central K-6 Run for Fitness.

The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will host the annual Holiday Crossings event from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, and from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Manheim Railway Station, located at 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. Admission will be free. The miniature train display will offer a look at what Manheim was like in the 1930s. Visitors may also enjoy photo opportunities with snowman face boards, a special appearance from Santa Claus, prize drawings, and chances to win a wide variety of giveaway baskets donated by many local Manheim businesses, including an original piece from Stiegel Glassworks 1976. The Trust Trio, a strolling a capella group that dresses in period costumes, will sing throughout the weekend. Children will have the chance to meet Santa Claus when he visits Holiday Crossings between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 2 and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 3. Local crafters will offer an abundance of holiday-themed items, as well as gift ideas, in the Holiday Crossings Gift Shop. A Book Nook will feature bargain-priced holiday books. Hungry attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy homemade goodies from the Holiday Crossings Cozy Café, which will offer an array of baked goods, hearty soup, and other holiday-themed treats. New menu items for 2017 will include a breakfast casserole, macaroni and cheese, and chicken corn soup. On the train station porch, fresh hand-roasted peanuts will be available to purchase.

In addition, area residents are invited to drop in at the library from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, for cookies, crafts, and hot cocoa. There will be several stations of holiday-themed crafts based on the movie “The Polar Express.” All proceeds from the Holiday Crossings will benefit the Manheim Community Library. Holiday Crossings is a signature fundraising event for the library, and library director Melissa Foltz credits the more than 200 Friends of the Manheim Community Library and the support of the Manheim community for making it possible. Elaine Gantz and Virginia Badger are co-chairs of the 2017 Holiday Crossings committee, and other members include Laureen Benn, Linda Brown, Vicki Nelson, and Kelly Barthold. Individuals interested in joining the Friends group may stop by the Friends’ table at Holiday Crossings. Friends memberships are available for a flat rate and last for one year. Handblown Stiegel Glassworks ornaments will also be available for Friends of the Manheim Community Library to purchase. Runners are invited to lace up their sneakers for the unique experience of running with hundreds of individuals clad in Santa Claus suits. The Manheim Lions Club will sponsor the third annual Santa Run and Walk 5K on Saturday, Dec. 2. While supplies last, adult runners will receive a Santa suit, which includes a jacket, trousers, a hat, a beard, and a belt. Participants are encouraged to wear the suit for the race. Youths age 14 and under will receive a lower entry fee that includes a longsleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat. Adult participants may opt to receive a long-sleeve race shirt instead of a Santa suit when they register. Participants will step off at 8:30 a.m. from the starting line in Market Square. The course will take runners on a loop through downtown Manheim. A disc jockey will set the mood with Christmas music, and an awards ceremony will follow the race.
