Few sights in nature can compare to a pristine blanket of white snow covering the countryside. Unfortunately, a wonderland of snow conceals dangers related to slips and falls, shoveling, and even overdoing winter sports.
The good news is that with some preparation many injuries may be avoided.
Zachary Wagner, a physical therapist in the rehabilitation wing at Fairmount in Ephrata sees a variety of injuries during the winter months. “The biggest thing is falls,” said Wagner, who noted that hip and femoral fractures are common as are rotator cuff and back issues related to shoveling.
To help prevent injuries, Wagner recommends a year-round regimen to increase strength, balance, and flexibility. Both aerobic and endurance exercises are good choices, and stretching is always recommended. “Stretching is a big thing, especially in winter,” said Wagner. “When it’s cold out, muscles tend to tighten up.” So loosening up for sports activities or tasks like shoveling can make a difference. “If you’re not stretching and you’re not used to strenuous activity, you put yourself at risk for strain or tendonitis,”
Wagner noted.
Footwear that is appropriate for the weather is another concern.
Wagner recommends nonslip, nonskid shoes with rubber soles that are not too worn and that fit well.
Arch support may be necessary to help some improve their gait and avoid falls. Dressing for the weather means layering warm clothing and wearing gloves. This is especially important for those who participate in winter sports and anticipate being outside for extended periods of time.
Shoveling is a necessity for many, but it is also an activity that can lead to several types of injuries. When shoveling, Wagner said to watch your posture. “Use your knees and hips,” he advised. “Keep your back straight, and don’t lift more than you can handle.” Because cold weather can increase chances of injury, avoid sudden twists. Instead, take extra steps to move snow. “Listen to your body,” cautioned Wagner, who
recommended breaks to warm up every 10 to 15 minutes.
Another precaution, which is especially important for seniors, is keeping up to date on physicals and eye examinations to be sure prescription medications and eyewear are correct. Be aware that over-thecounter cold and flu remedies can cause drowsiness and increase chances of stumbling. It is not only seniors who need to be more careful during the harsher months. Wagner noted, “(Winter) injuries can happen to anyone.”
Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmounthomes.org.

Preparing the Way Ministries with his wife, Bonnie. The New Holland pair, missionaries of Petra Church, oversee a number of efforts under the ministry’s umbrella, concentrated in Thika, Kenya, Africa.
“In Africa, we do many things,” said Randy, who first became interested in missions in Kenya when a man from that country visited him in 1993. The man told the couple about a vision he had of a church in Africa. In 1994, he told the Martins the vision had come true. Randy visited Kenya and fell in love with the country and its people. He began leading outreaches to Kenya, traveling there about 30 times, sometimes with Bonnie. In 2015, Randy had a vision that involved dropping the nail bag he wore in his construction business. Bonnie pointed out to him that in the vision,
“We are empowering the church through many different avenues,” said Randy Martin, who founded

the nail bag dropped slowly to the ground, so Randy and Bonnie took their time, moving to Kenya and full-time ministry in 2018.
“We went from a momand-pop operation to a fullfledged ministry,” said Randy, who noted the 501(c)(3) has a board and staff in New Holland and five leaders overseeing aspects of the ministry in Thika. Among those ministries is the Africa Association of Bible Schools (AABS), of which Randy is the national director for Kenya. “We provide curriculum to empower leaders, and they run the school,” said Randy, who explained that through membership schools, certificates are awarded to students who meet the criteria.
A large part of the Martins’ ministry involves community empowerment. Working through local churches, the ministry is helping farmers to improve milk and crop pro-
duction and teaching efficient construction methods to help increase worker pay. “Our desire is to empower the community to give them sustainable incomes,” said Randy, who added that no-interest loans allow for the purchase of water pumps and beehives. Repayment of the loans is used to purchase similar items for others.
Organizing conferences to train leaders and pastors is another branch of the organization. In May of 2022, a conference held in Wote, Kenya, featured 12 U.S. leaders and attracted more than 300 Kenyans. More than 600 Kenyans are expected for a September conference, and in May, 400 Kenyan youths will interact with youths and leaders from the U.S. in teaching sessions and sporting events.
The Martins also travel with a portable stage and
loudspeakers to do open air crusades. “We were the first to preach the Gospel of Jesus publicly in the Shamoni region,” said Randy, who noted that close to 150 people accepted Jesus in the five-day effort. Randy dreams of having a truck equipped with a stage for this purpose. He would also like to see a church built in the area, noting that a 40-by-70-foot church can be built with the help of a U.S. team in about a week. Randy and Bonnie visit local churches in Kenya for revival services, and in the U.S., they help organize outreach teams to visit Kenya.
Now, the Martins are hoping to build a base in Kenya to enhance the construction and agriculture training they are doing there. More information about Preparing the Way may be found at www.ptwministries.org.

Randy and Bonnie Martin have founded Preparing the Way Ministries based in Thika, Kenya.
Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a
career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of stu-

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and car-
diovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than
650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight
can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.
Grant Provides Truck To Power Packs Project
Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20-foot box truck. Power Packs will now be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.
Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power Packs would
need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food donors and produce

Three years.
Thirty-six months of exploring the differences and similarities between people.
One thousand ninety-five days of altering the world’s perception of a common condition.
Twenty-six thousand, two hundred eighty hours of helping people with Down syndrome function better in their world.
On Jan. 11, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster conducted its third birthday party, celebrating three years of serving the local Down syndrome community. It was a special milestone for the special place
located at 2503 Oregon Pike.
Over those years, GiGi’s Playhouse has enhanced the lives of hundreds of participants from Lancaster, York and beyond. Yet in many ways, GiGi’s Playhouse is just getting started.
“When we opened three years ago, it was exciting,” said Christine Hewitt, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s site coordinator, “because there were support groups, but there wasn’t anything in the area like it. The main goal is to change the way people view Down syndrome. Everything we do here is designed to help people with Down syndrome do their best. But we also support their families.”
More than a playhouse or even a school, GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center. The Lancaster location serves nearly 380 participants and their families through hands-on programs, tutoring, exercise classes, activities, arts and crafts and life skill-building sessions, all free of charge.
GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s participants range in age from infants to those 60 years of age. Hewitt is the lone paid employee, but she’s supported by a staff of more than 40 volunteers.
“We practice a lot of like skills here,” said Hewitt, a resident of Ephrata. “We focus so much on little steps, on the next steps they can do. Here, we celebrate little wins. They’re little things we take for granted.”
“People often think people with Down syndrome can’t do things,” continued Hewitt.
GiGi’s Playhouse bears the name of GiGi Gianni, who was born with Down syndrome in Chicago more than 20 years ago. Since the first GiGi’s Playhouse was founded, 54 other locations have been opened, including the one in Lancaster, the only site in Pennsylvania.
“Since we opened, people have really come out,” said Hewitt. “How quickly we’ve
grown is surprising. We’ve outgrown this building. But what’s also surprising is how much of an impact it has had on our participants.”
“It’s allowed them to become their best selves,” added Hewitt. “I’ve seen so
many participants come out of their shells. This is like a home to them. They are safe here. They take a lot of pride in this place.”
