Horses helping heroes BY ANN MEAD ASH

“T

he overall long-term objective is to give people in these fields the opportunity to stay in their fields,” said Jennifer T. Rummel, executive director with Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) stables, of the new Heroes and Horses program, an unmounted equine-assisted intervention for frontline workers and first responders first held in October of 2023. GMTRC pro gram director Steph Fleck reported that the free six-week program, which meets for two consecutive hours each week, attracted five participants who represented the fields of social work, mental health, nursing, and hospice. Although the program has a 10-member capacity, Fleck said she was pleased it started with a smaller group so that the feedback might be more meaningful. Prior to starting the program, GMT RC sur veyed the local

first-responder community to find out what daily struggles might be leading them to consider a new career path. “We found a lot of ties to mental health (and) burnout,” said Fleck, who noted that GMTRC responded with a pilot curriculum that discussed topics such as setting boundaries, encouraging healthy professional and personal relationships, and effective communication. “Individuals (in these fields) can feel very isolated with what they face and deal with daily,” noted Fleck, who added that activities related to self-talk, self-esteem, and positivity were included. Each participant was assigned a project horse, but the pairs were not chosen randomly. “Often when we introduce (participants), they find a natural and easy connection (with one horse) that is really organic,” said Fleck. “The horses kind of pick them.” As a participant works with a particular horse, a bond develops. “We did a lot of groundwork,

More than cute - a commitment “There are so many things to consider when adopting a pet,” said Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, which oversees the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30 as well as the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading. “Those who have never been the primary caretaker, it’s difficult to see everything. We discourage people from making a snap decision.” Different types of pets require different levels of care as do the individual pets, based on age

and a variety of factors, and the commitment continues for up to 20 years depending on the pet. “I wish people would better manage the expectation that they will walk in and find a pet for them,” March pointed out. “Pets are not universal. They have wide-ranging personalities, and finding a good match for you is not always easy.” To foster more successful pet ownership, Humane Pennsylvania seeks to counsel would-be pet owners with questions about lifestyle, time and interest in working with a pet, and expenses. March noted that getting a

“We have a lot of sharing time,” she noted. Hospital social worker Br ittany Hershey, who took part in the first program, said she was searching for a stress reliever that offered something different. “I was really looking for something where I could connect but not necessarily have to talk,” she stated. “I like to be able to sometimes not talk but still be able to work through emotions.” Hershey noted that the training she received helped her overcome any anxiety she felt about the large animals. “ The education that (was) provided by the staff has given me much more confidence with being around (horses),” she said, pointing out that she loved getting to know the personality of her “quirky” project horse, Emmit. Rummel concurred, noting that working with a horse from the ground is a more personal experience. “Conveying nonverbal messages to (the horses) is so much more mentally and psychologically stimulating (than being on horseback),” she noted. “It’s a different kind of experience.” Organizers plan to offer the program at GMTRC several times during 2024. Fleck pointed out that the curriculum can be customized and that the organization hopes to ser ve EMTs, police, f i re f i g hte rs , a nd b o th active-duty and retired military personnel in the future. Open enrollment programs and programs for specific entities - such as the personnel from one fire company could be accommodated. SEEDS to hold program at Fairmount Representatives of Conestoga Valley (CV ) SEEDS, a local nonprofit organization focusing on health, education, and housing needs within the CV community, will share the ministry’s story at Fairmount in Ephrata on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room at 2100 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, on the west side of the Fairmount campus. SEEDS co-directors Michelle Kime and Kristen Hershey will be the presenters, and there will be time for questions. The event is open to the public, and no reservations are necessary. SEEDS is the brainchild of CV school social worker Katie Reiff, who became aware of acute needs

within the CV community while working with students’ families. She began to research existing organizations in the area, looking for ways to partner with those programs while building an organization to address the additional needs she observed. Currently, SEEDS’ focus on education includes free English classes for non-Eng lish- speak ing adults in the Conestoga Valley School District, with free transportation, child care, and meals provided along with the classes. Future programs will focus on health care and housing in addition to education. SEEDS is looking for community involvement i n m a ny a re a s . Mo re information is available at www.seedscv.com.

Lancaster Catholic prepares students for life BY JEFF FALK

Education doesn’t mold us; it unfolds us. Schools don’t build character; they reveal it and nurture it. For 96 years, Lancaster Catholic High School

(LCHS) has been inf luencing the development of Lancaster County adolescents. It’s the type of influence that can stick with an individual for a lifetime, one that has given rise to the notion “once a Crusader,

always a Crusader.” “We’re focused on the holistic development, which is mind, body, spirit,” said Lancaster Catholic’s director of enrollment, Angela Baumler. “We get to know a student’s strengths, and we can prepare them for what’s next in life. We’re getting them ready for the next challenge. I think it’s a more personal experience. This is a community where people are connected to the school. That kind of connection to your alma mater is very unique.” Currently, about 500 students in grades nine through 12 are enrolled at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster. LCHS is associated with six partner elementary schools, whose total enrollments number

the school’s interscholastic athletic teams. About 95% of LCHS graduates go on to college. “Lancaster Catholic High School serves students in Lancaster County who are looking for a college prep education in a unique academic environment,” said Baumler. “It was founded for Catholic students, and while our mission hasn’t changed, we’ve opened See Lancaster Catholic pg 5

Lancaster County. Because of that suppor t , many students and families pay between 30 and 80% of the tuition price. “A majority of our families receive some sort of variable tuition from us,” said Baumler. “Our goal at Lancaster Catholic is that if this is the right place for the student, we will work with that family to make sure the option is available.”

Lancaster Catholic High School was founded in 1928. “Back then, the expectation was if you were Catholic, you went and got a Catholic education,” said Baumler. “It was free; the families paid nothing. You tithed to the parish and the parishes supported the school. We have been part of the Lancaster County community for nearly 100 years.”

Training , both house training and behavior modification, is most important and time-consuming with puppies. “Housebreaking (is) a pretty major thing, but there are other things, and one of the most important is the general manners,” emphasized March, who noted that laying down house rules from the first day and enforcing them 24/7 is key. “When people return puppies, it’s because they underestimated how much work those general behaviors would be,” he said. “One of the bigger mistakes with a very young puppy is to delay the beginning of that training. As dogs mature, allowing behaviors to persist can lead to really undesirable behaviors such

as barking or growling over food or treats.” March recommended working with a trainer in person, online, or by video. “That second set of eyes can give you valuable reasons for the behavior,” he noted. Sometimes new pet owners are not prepared for the costs associated with the animal’s care and feeding. Melissa Detrick, owner and administrator of Honey Brook Animal Hospital, said that knowing what is best to feed a particular animal is important, but that owners should also be prepared for the costs of first-year visits, which may include vaccinations, neutering, and preventatives. Pet-sitting and grooming expenses will come into play with certain types of pets, as well. “My advice to pet owners, especially new pet owners, i s m u l t i f a c e t e d ,” s a i d Detrick. “Do the research before taking the leap.” Detrick pointed out that

practicing preventive care combined with a balanced diet and maintaining a good relationship with the animal’s vet is all important. She also recommended considering pet insurance. A ccording to March, when a relationship does not work out between a pet and an owner, the problem often lies with the owner’s perspective. “Most of the time it’s because the caretaker failed to manage expectations for the situation,” said March, who noted that owners may think that an experience with an animal will be similar to a past pet experience or a friend’s or relative’s pet experience. “ That’s why relationships fail,” he noted. Humane Pennsylvania formed in 2014 when the Humane Leagues of Lancaster and Berks County merged. Cats are housed at the Lancaster location, and dogs are sheltered at the Berks County facility.

started by two ladies (Marian R. Headrick and Olivia Stoner) who had relatives with intellectual disabilities, and they weren’t happy with how society treated people with disabilities,” said Mueller. “ There was no special education at that time. The original name was the Help-Self School, and eventually it became known as the Child Development Center.” The Child Development Center was designed to provide instr uction to children with disabilities in an attempt to assimilate them into the community. “In 1958, the state mandated special education in schools, and there wasn’t a need for what we were doing ,” Mueller added. “That’s when we made the shift to the occupation center. What we do has changed over the years, but we’ve been doing it for a long time.” Typically, ODC trains young individuals with disabilities who have grad-

uated from high school around the a ge of 21. ODC accepts those people around age 24, after they’ve had three years to search for employment on their own. Currently, ODC is working with 35 individuals with disabilities from all over Lancaster County. At one time that number was over 100 individuals. “A t t h e b a s e l e v e l , our clients are getting a paycheck,” said Mueller. “There’s pride that comes from earning a paycheck. There’s pride that comes f ro m d o i n g a j o b a n d doing it well. We want to bring them a level of independence. Some live at home. Some live in group settings. Some live as individuals.” ODC partners with local b u s i n e s s e s to d e ve l o p skills and confidence, in both in-house and community settings. “The idea is to get them out in the community and get them to know what they like to do,” said

Mueller. “We have helped a lot of individuals over the years. But we’re not just helping the individuals; we’re also helping the families. They see the difference it makes helping just that one individual.” “These individuals are no different than you and I,” Mueller continued. “They have dreams. They have passions. They have the same interests we have. They should be able to seek employment. ... We’re here to assist them and enable them and help them find their way through life.” For additional information about Occupational Development Center, go to www.odcenter.org.

Employment can be considered an honor and privilege, and some b e l i e v e t h a t e v e r yo n e should have equal access to work. It’s a belief that Occup at i o n a l De ve l o p m e n t Center (ODC) has grown into over these last 75 years. “It’s a situation where we’ve all had great jobs we ’ve loved,” said Ken Mueller, ODC ’s p ublic relations and development manager. “But we’ve all had jobs we don’t love. I got to go to work today, and I enjoy what I do, even though there are challenges. A lot of people don’t want to hire individuals with disabilities. ... Our folks want to do their jobs. They don’t co m p l a i n a b o u t wo r k . They complain when they don’t have the work.” Located at 640 Martha Av e . , L a n c a s t e r, O D C trains and helps employ indi v iduals w i th emotional and mental disabilities. On Thursday, Feb. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., ODC will recognize its 75th anniversary with a Founder’s Day celebration and open house. Mueller will open the festivities with a short talk on the histor y of ODC, and state and local government officials will be on hand to present citations and proclamations. Tours of the facility will be given, and light refreshments will be served. “Our organization was

Club members spread holiday cheer A holiday tradition with the goal of brightening the holiday season for area nursing home residents continued this year with t h e L a n c a s te r C o u n t y Cruisers car club. The initiative began with an idea that Earl Rebman Jr. had 24 years ago. Since 2014, the members of the Lancaster County Cruisers have taken on

the distribution of poinsettias to nursing homes in the Lancaster area. On Dec. 22, 2023, through a partnership with an area greenhouse and transportation for the poinsettias provided by E.M. Herr Ace Hardware Farm & Home Center, members of Lancaster County Cruisers delivered 330 poinsettias to 18 nursing homes in

Lancaster County. Lancaster County Cruisers holds a car show every year on the first Saturday in July at the Willow Street Fire Company field and donates proceeds to several nonprofit charities in the area. Anyone with an interest in collectible vehicles, including those who do not own such a vehicle, is

welcome to join the Lancaster County Cruisers. The group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Willow Street United Church of Christ, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street.
