Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet To Return he Ephrata Area Churches’ annual sportsmen’s banquet was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year, the group, which includes about a dozen Ephrata- and Akron-area churches, is planning to hold the event. The speaker will be Tracy Breen, a full-time outdoor writer, speaker, and marketing consultant. He will speak on the topic of “Outwitting a Big Game Animal’s Senses.” The family-friendly banquet will be held on Friday, March 11, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. so attendees can view vendor and other displays. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out at the event as well. Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. His father made a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence

In October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we researched about 30 community pools,” said Paskoff. “Our team was amazing. We had to find a place.” See Aaron’s Acres pg 2
Audrey Kanagy introduced the Conestoga Valley High School chamber orchestra to the Tuesday Alive with 55 & Up December gathering.
On Dec. 14, 2021, Audrey Kanagy, pastor of Ridgeview Mennonite Church, must have felt a mixture of joy and sadness when she introduced the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) chamber orchestra to the Tuesday Alive with 55 & Up gathering of more than 50 in the church fellowship hall. Originally, the presentation was scheduled in December of 2020, when Audrey’s son Jesse was a student and part of the chamber orchestra, but COVID-19 restrictions delayed the concert until 2021, by which time Jesse had graduated. led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and he has written for New Pioneer, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Outdoor Life. He has experienced hunting, fishing, and speaking throughout North America. Breen has cerebral palsy, which affects much of his right side. When he speaks at game dinners and other outdoor-themed events, he often discusses the struggles and disappointments he has been dealt, sharing how God has used his life as he overcomes physical challenges. Founded in 1844 in London, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), also known as the Y, serves the community by offering programs that are intended to help people build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies. By instilling Christian ideas in its programs, the YMCA strives to develop and practice the principles of faith, hope, love, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch opened in 2007. “We don’t like to really see ourselves as a ‘gym and swim,’” said executive director Rick Wagner. “We want to be a pillar of the community, so we like to offer community-based programming.” The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA offers programs such as swim lessons, summer camp, youth and adult basketball, diabetes prevention, personal training, adult volleyball, CPR and first aid training, e-sports, and more. In addition, the Y does not turn people away based on ability to pay. It offers financial assistance for those who are unable to afford membership rates. “We have such a great diversity,” noted Wagner. “We have people of different ages, races, and backgrounds. It’s like a community inside of a building, which is really nice.” Due to COVID-19, the LampeterStrasburg YMCA was closed during part of 2020. Since reopening, the branch has welcomed back 80% of its members and wants that number to grow. Moving forward, Wagner said he wants to build community partnerships and be viewed as an organization on which the community can rely.

had everything.” Paskoff noted she specifically worked with pool manager Leo Ward, office manager Paula Walsh, and borough manager Dick Fulcher. “The pool will be open for us until noon so we can have the pool to ourselves (in the mornings),” said Paskoff, who added that New Holland representatives have been welcoming and supportive, and she is excited about using the park.
For more than 20 years, Aaron’s Acres has provided socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, more than 200 took part in camp. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers. In 2021, in-person camp was held, and the organization served 30 campers per twoweek session. In 2022, camps will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 20, to Friday, July 1; Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 22; and Monday, July 25, to Friday, Aug. 5. For several years now, Aaron’s Acres has been seeking a home of its own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30-year-olds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the animals, and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

YMCA from pg 2 Wagner explained that the Y was able to gain much of its membership back faster than anticipated in part due to the merger of the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County. The two entities merged into a single YMCA association, now known as the YMCA of the Roses, on Dec. 1, 2021. The grand opening of Village Park on April 10, 2021 offered the branch a little boost, too. “I kind of think of it as free advertising because so many families pass by our building on their way to sports practices,” stated Wagner. The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA as some new events in the works. On Saturday, April 2, there will be a
Splish-Splash Easter Egg Bash where participants will hunt for Easter eggs in the pool, and Healthy Kids Day will return on Saturday, April 30. More details on these events will come soon. “If you want to feel welcome, if you want no judgments, if you want that community aspect where you’re not just coming to a gym but you’re coming to a family, then come here,” noted Wagner. “The YMCA is here not just for membership but any type of community-based relationship or community-based need.” For more information about the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, visit www.rosesymca.org or call 717-464-4000.

The Buckskins’ Titus York looks to put a rebound back up against Hempfield’s Cole Overbaugh during Conestoga Valley’s 64-46, Section Two - Section One loss to the visiting Black Knights on January 20.
Conestoga Valley finished their Section One crossover games on the 25th, falling to Cedar Crest by a 54-31 final in Lebanon. CV posted a 10-3 edge in the opening frame but was unable to maintain that momentum leading to a 51-24 Lady Falcon advantage over the final three quarters and the 54-31 final. Hehnly netted 12 points in the loss. SWIMMING The swimming teams split their last two meets with both sides topping Lancaster Catholic on January 25th after falling to Elizabethtown on the 20th. Wins were plentiful against Catholic as the boy’s won 105-44 while the Lady Buckskins enjoyed an 82-60 victory but not so against Etown where the boy’s fell 12345 and the girls 119-46. In fact, CV managed just two wins against the Bears with Jordan Holmes taking

finals, first with a loss to Hempfield on January 20th then in a win over Lebanon on the 25th. Ryan Muckle was the top bowler in both matches with a 670 against Hempfield and a 613 series opposite Lebanon. Josiah Casler posted a 656 series against Hempfield and matched the 592 series by Luke Snader against the Cedars. Snader added a 504 with Jocelyn Ross posting a 586 against the Black Knights. Ross rolled a 475 against Lebanon with Rowan Aisenbrey finishing with a 427. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL One step forward, two steps back is the easiest way to describe the Lady Buckskins last few games. CV dropped their Section One crossover games with Hempfield and Cedar Crest but managed to slip a win over Donegal in between the two losses. The end result is a 7-8 mark with just over a week remaining in the regular season. Up first was a 51-27 loss to Hempfield, on January 20th. The Lady Knights used the first half to put the game away, opening a 13-3 lead after one with a 30-20 cushion at the break. CV managed to hang close in the second half, but the first half damage was too much. Taylor Hehnly netted 10-points in the loss. Two days later CV welcomed the Lady Indians to town and sent them home a 57-28 loser. A total of nine Lady Buckskins scored with Hehnly (13-points) and Rhiannon Henry (10points) the only players to reach double digits.

Cedar Crest in their final crossover game, winning 76-57. This time CV built their cushion a little at a time, outscoring the visiting Falcons by five, five, eight and one to collect a 19point win. Swinton (23-points) and Griffin Rishell (21-points) led the way with Wertz chipping in 12-points. WRESTLING The wrestling team finished a light but busy stretch where they had only one match but that one match was actually five dual matches in one at the Exeter Blue/White Duals held on January 22nd. CV rolled to a 5-0 mark to bring home the team title with only a 32-22 victory over Downingtown West counting as close. Archbishop Ryan provided a challenge, but CV still managed a 38-23 win over the Philly Catholic school. Add in lopsided wins over Red Lion (40-16), Southern Lehigh (48-19) and the host Eagles (41-20) and you get a pristine 5-0 mark. Trent Ruble and Nathaniel Kirchner each matched the team’s perfect mark while Luke Morley, Rey Ortiz and Keaton Fischer just missed with a 4-1 record. Josue Marente added a 2-0 day with Zander Rider posting a 2-1 mark. Luke Needham, Abdoul Akala and Jonathan Lopez all went 3-2 while Bryce Bowman and Payton Peace posted the inverse for their day. BOWLING The bowling team found themselves on both sides of 7-0

the 100-backstroke and Daniel Ivanchikov winning the 200 IM. Holmes added a second place in the 50-free with Ashtyn Heisey (100free), Olivia Sowal (200 IM) and Nastia Ivanchikov (200free) also securing second place finishes. For the boy’s Ivanchikov added a second in the 500-free while Rome Lucchese (100-free) and Connor Ludwig (100-backstoke) also added second place finishes. CV turned things around to collect 16 event wins in the double victory over Catholic. “It was a great night for the swimmers for sure,” said head coach Barb Raasch. have attempted suicide.” For boys, the number is up as well. McDevitt added that supports are in place for students in school, but those do not extend to the home. “We connect them to appropriate resources,” she said. Mann added, “You have a child that threatens suicide and goes to the emergency room, and the doctor says, ‘You’re all right (to go home),’ but when you go home, you still have a family whose child threatened suicide. They are in crisis that their child feels that way.” Mann said that is where family peer support steps in. “Parent education programs are part of supports for families,” said Mann, who noted that the program can help parents determine what classes and other support systems will best serve them. While clinical care is meant to produce outcomes over time, Mann noted many parents need help with daily issues. “With parents, oftentimes, they have had so much clinical care, but they still can’t get through a day. That’s where we come in,” Mann said. Mann and McDevitt both noted that family peer support can provide parents with a sense of empowerment and efficacy. “Efficacy is the power to change my circumstances,” noted Mann, who said the idea is to battle the sense of helplessness and hopelessness parents often feel. Mann said that her goal in family peer support is to halve parents’ distress and double their joy. While having a peer to share distress with provides support, sharing joy means emphasizing a child’s successes to make parenting pleasurable and keep parents and children connected in spite of the challenges they face. MHALC has plans to screen and train volunteers for the program. “We are looking for volunteers who are articulate and who have shown they can effectively advocate,” said Mann. Readers who would like to volunteer may call 717-397-7461. More information about MHALC may be found at www.mhalancaster.org.

According to Kim McDevitt, director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), parents of children facing mental health issues could benefit from working with others who really understand their situation. “We feel there is a gap in services in terms of supporting the parents,” said McDevitt. “We don’t want (parents) to be alone in this.” To fill that gap, MHALC is launching family peer support, a program that provides parents with trained volunteer peers who understand what they are going through and understand the mental health system. “Support is known to be effective,” said Rosie Mann, family peer support program consultant, who cited national studies of family peer
support that show that intervention results in better school attendance and need for fewer disciplinary supports, among other benefits. According to Mann, peers are able to interact with parents in ways that clinicians cannot. “(A peer can) take away a sense of shame and judgment from a parent,” Mann explained. “When (advice) comes from a peer, (he or she is saying), ‘I have tried this and it worked. Maybe you want to try it.’” Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues among young people have been on the rise. “The surgeon general put out an advisory for youth mental health,” said McDevitt. “(Since the beginning of the pandemic) there has been a 51% increase in emergency room visits for (girls) who

Nine-year-old Parker Millhouse was born without a leg. Despite missing his right leg, Parker lives each day with a positive spirit and enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. He is also the inspiration and driving force behind Iron-Leg Corp, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. The organization, created by president Matthew Millhouse and vice president Sean Laukhuff, became an official 501(c)(3) in April 2021. The board of Iron-Leg Corp. has grown since then, adding treasurer Mike Canarelli, secretary Darren Hershock and board members Matt York, Bill Coder, Andrea Schopf, and Josh Holland. In September 2021, Iron-Leg Corp. hosted a golf outing as its first fundraiser. The organization raised $38,000 at the event, and from that, the organization was able to support and fund the purchase of a TrueLimb prosthetic hand from Unlimited Tomorrow for a 11-year-old boy named Shawn who lives in York. To continue funding its mission, Iron-Leg Corp. will host a ’70s and ’80s themed dance party for people age 21 and older. The event will take place at The Village, 205 N. Christian St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 11, from 7 p.m. to midnight. At the party, there will be a DJ, a photo booth, and a silent auction of 70s and 80s memorabilia. Costumes are optional, but prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed male, female, and couple. “Just have fun for a great cause,” said Hershock. We’re unique and we (board members of Iron-Leg Corp.) all have a history here at The Village. It will be a blast!” Additionally, members of Iron-Leg

Serenading Seniors from pg 1 CVHS conductor Emily Sheffer explained that the group of more than a dozen students were all volunteers who gather after school twice each month to learn extra music so they may play in concerts designed to give back to the community. The group played an assortment of holiday classics, including “Away in a Manager,” “Joy to the World,” “Good Tidings to You,” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” and “Deck the Halls.” Songs were intro-

duced in clusters by individual students who shared their names, how long they have been playing their chosen instrument, and what they plan to do following graduation. Among the selected professions were counseling, meteorology, and psychology. While the students played at one end of the hall, tables at the other end were decorated with greens and lit candles in red jars for attendees to enjoy a meal of Amish turkey, a traditional Amish wedding dish that includes filling, turkey, and gravy. Sides were mashed potatoes, peas, and pepper cabbage, with Christmas cookies for dessert. At each Tuesday Alive event, take-home containers are made available for seniors to take leftovers home. Etta Esch, who writes and edits the Ridgeview newsletter, reported that the gatherings are “a community affair.” “More than half (of those attending) are from the community,” she said, meaning they are not Ridgeview members. “We look for-
