Good News! LMHS To Stage “Godspell”

sk the cast members of the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) production of “Godspell” what they hope to give to audiences, and several quickly respond with the word “community.” “The show is about the community surrounding Jesus,” said Heidi Stoltzfus, who will belt out the wellknown “Day by Day” in the show. Carter Palmer, who will sing “All Good Gifts,” noted that the cast is learning about the community of God and becoming an extension of that community, and Ryan Kimbark, who plays Jesus, noted that the circumstances brought about by COVID-19 restrictions have put a focus on the importance of community to make the show especially relevant at this time. “Godspell,” which features music by Grammy Award and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, will be staged in the High Fine Arts Center,

2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Feb. 24, 25, and 26, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 3 and 7 p.m. Director Dean Sauder chose the 2012 revised version of the show with updated music. “Godspell,” set in New York City, tells the story of a small group of people who help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a variety of forms of storytelling, including improvisation, skits, music, and dance. The play concludes with the Last Supper and the crucifixion, the culmination of Jesus’ messages about love. Sauder said that he loves the show. Several members of the cast of 15 were familiar with the musical before auditioning. While the cast has dealt with the COVID-19-related challenges of not having everyone at practice, they are embracing the show and working to make it their own. Miranda Beidler, who sings “Light of the World,”

described the show as open, saying that the opportunity to improvise has been fun. Sauder agreed, noting that the players have incorporated character references from “The Office,” along with nods to “The Princess Bride” and “Mean Girls.” That openness extends to the set as well. “The set is going to be a worksite with scaffolding, traffic cones, sawhorses, and a ladder and planks,” said Sauder. Caleb Metzler, who plays Judas and John the Baptist, pointed out the fun for both cast and audience members in the variety of styles of music. Sauder noted that the show will creatively weave in a boy band on one song and that Abby Brubaker will utilize some of her ballet talents on “By My Side.” Kimbark, who has been tap dancing for several years, will showcase his experience on “All for the Best.” Kimbark called the show “playful” in its takes on the parables of Jesus, and Sauder noted that the show will See LMHS pg 9

Blessings of Hope (BOH), 500 Becker Road, Leola, is in the business of distributing food and overseeing volunteer labor at disaster sites. Most recently BOH staff members were at work in Campbellsville, Ky., where the organization has a distribution center not far from Bowling Green and Mayfield - both locations hit by a tornado on Dec. 10, 2021.

During part of the COVID-19 induced school shutdown of 2020, the work of remodeling Brownstown Elementary School in the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) continued. The work, which created the first Breniser STEM Lab in the district, continued for more than a year before being completed during the fall 2021 semester. On Dec. 15, 2021, the lab was dedicated in honor of the late Beverly H. Breniser, who had been a CVSD

Water and ready-to-eat foods were among the first items Blessings Of Hope delivered to areas of Kentucky hit by a tornado in December 2021.

Lapp described churches that were stuffing buses with anything they could send, including clothing and toys in addition to food items. He noted that two BOH trucks distribute items from the center to the surrounding communities. Lapp serves on the board of Plain Compassion Crisis Response, which is based in Intercourse. He said a steady stream of volunteers has been pouring into the area ravaged by the tornado. “They focus more on the cleanup side,” said Lapp, who noted about 250 volunteers were being managed per day with 500 to 800 from the Lancaster area having served at the site. He added that soon after the tor-

nado hit, representatives of Bowling Green contacted Plain Compassion to manage all local volunteers. “They were processing up to 900 local applications a day in Bowling Green alone,” he said. “(People) want to know if they go there to give that their talents will be utilized and not just wasted,” he said. BOH was founded in 2006 when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that would otherwise have been wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. But it is not the blessings the group is bestowing that BOH founder David Lapp had on his mind several weeks after the crisis when he discussed the response effort. “It’s been a real blessing to be able to respond in this way,” noted Lapp, who remained in Leola while fellow founder Aaron Fisher traveled to Kentucky, arriving in Campbellsville just about a day after the tornado touched down. “At this time, people want to give.” Lapp said that the devastation left by the 190 mph winds as the tornado cut a 165-mile path through Kentucky met the criteria the organization has set for sending supplies. The first trucks, which arrived in Kentucky at 4 a.m. on Dec. 12, carried water and ready-to-eat foods to bring immediate relief to those affected. According to Lapp, about 80 houses were destroyed in the rural Campbellsville region. Currently, BOH plans to have people on the ground in the area through the end of April. “At this point, Blessings of Hope is responsible for all incoming donations into the distribution center at Mayfield,” Lapp noted, adding that he estimated about 100 truckloads of product were on the ground there in midJanuary. “Initially we were sending product from here, but two weeks into this, we saw there was product coming from all over America that needed to be managed,” he explained. “ We shifted our focus to managing what was coming in and managing the distribution in Mayfield and the surrounding area.”

Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West. Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema. GOTR has partnered with Thaddeus Stevens, UPMC, and Penn Cinema to make these field trips possible. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for girls to experience GOTR curriculum while also exposing them to (future) careers they might not have considered,” said Katie Sandoe, GOTR executive director.

STEM Lab from pg 1 teacher and principal before serving as the executive director of the Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF). CVEF has worked with the High Companies to provide grants to complete four STEM/Maker/Space Labs - one in each of the CVSD elementary schools, with all labs named in honor of Breniser. Starting the week of Jan. 17, one teacher from each grade in Brownstown Elementary will be working along with principal Andrew Graybill and representatives of IU13 to train in the best ways to utilize the lab. “We will all be thinking about STEM and how to bring more of it here,” said Justine Taylor, who teaches fifth grade at Brownstown. She explained that the program will introduce the teachers to the tools found in the lab so that they can become familiar with them and use them to do hands-on education with the students. Brownstown math specialist Laura Gingrich said she has already used some of the tools that the grant purchased. “ We have done things with the nesting place value blocks that go to 1,000. They’re expensive, but having them here, all grades have access to them to understand ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. We use these for multi-digit division,” Gingrich said. “The math application is exciting. We have the tools to see math come to life.”

all about

Taylor has already employed lessons that use math and science together. “I have been teaching capacity,” she explained, noting that students have been measuring water in both the imperial and metric systems. “We were measuring water and added salt to the water to see how the temperature has to go below 32 (to freeze),” she said. “We talked about the real-life application of salt on your driveway and how the kids need to know the roads are safer if we can find ways to problem solve. The kids got so excited.” Graybill is looking forward to the possibilities of meeting new science standards that will be prevalent in the next few years. “We have lots of fancy gadgets, and STEM teachers are really good at using them,” he said. “The starting point with the IU13 is having a design experience per grade level per trimester. It might be a two- or threeday activity,” he said. He noted that with the lab having just opened, the school is not using it comprehensively yet, but that is the goal for the next year. “There have been some neat activities,” he said. CVEF is a registered nonprofit organization committed to enhancing CVSD schools by funding innovative programs and classroom strategies. The organization set a goal several years ago to raise $100,000 for the four STEM labs. More information about CVEF, readers may be found at www.conestogavalleyef.org.

Last State Silver Bank Rolls up for grabs Fortune of old Silver Coins issued by the U.S. Gov’t sealed away in the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents STATE RESTRICTION: Only residents of PA get the $19 state minimum - non state residents must pay $57 per coin PENNSYLVANIA - “We’re bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. That’s because the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s twenty rarely seen Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars worth up to 60 times their face value for just $380 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $57 per coin which totals $1,140 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars minted over 50 years ago. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit al-

lowed of 6 Kennedy Presidential Silver Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that these coins date back tot he mid 1900’s and some may be worth up to 60 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. “Rarely seen silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars have nearly doubled in collector value in just the last several years,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 6 Bank Rolls because you can only get them rolled this way directly from the National Mint and Treasury and they are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Q IMPORTANT FACTS: The dates and mint marks of the rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but any rare, scarce or highly collectible coins, regardless of their value that state residents may find inside the sealed Bank Rolls are theirs to keep.

Q FLYING OUT THE DOOR: Calls are pouring in from state residents who are trying to get their hands on the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist sealed away in the secured packages pictured above before the deadline ends. That’s because residents who beat the 2-day deadline printed in today’s publication by calling 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1621 are cashing in on the lowest ever state minimum price set by the National Mint and Treasury.

Answering Your Questions Q: How to claim the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls A: If you are a Pennsylvania resident read the important information below about claiming the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at: 1-800-233-5658 EXT: JFR1621 beginning at precisely 8:30 A.M. this morning. Q: Are these Silver Kennedy Half Dollars worth more than other Half Dollars? A: Yes. These rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were minted in the mid 1900’s. That makes these silver coins extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all. In fact, these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command collector values of many times their face value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday. Q: How much are the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls worth? A: It’s impossible to say, but these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars date back to the mid 1900’s and some are worth up to 60 times the face value and there are 20 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Q: How do I get the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls? A: The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1621 before the deadline ends. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll of 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, which totals just $380 for the full Bank Roll. That’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,140 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

R080509

Q: Why are so many Pennsylvania residents calling to get them? A: Because they are the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. These are not ordinary bank rolls. These are full Bank Rolls containing 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars dating clear back to the mid 1900’s some worth up to 60 times their face value. Remember this. Only Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury for the next two days. Non state residents must pay $57 per coin.

Ephrata National Bank Posts Video Contest Ephrata National Bank (ENB) is accepting submissions for its “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest, which is organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation. This national competition encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of sound money management and to set their peers on a sound financial path. “Lights, Camera, Save!” gives local students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers. ENB believes that a strong financial education is critical to a successful future and the contest reinforces that message. To participate, students ages 13 to 18 must create a video lasting 30 seconds or less and focused on using money wisely. Students must provide the bank with a link to their video

and a completed entry form by Thursday, March 31. The contest is open to filmmakers of all experience levels. ENB will host the first round of judging and select a winner to compete on the national level for one of three cash prizes. Additionally, the first-place winner will receive a local grand prize from ENB. National contestants will face off head-tohead in the first round of national judging on the American Bankers Association’s Instagram page at www.instagram .com/americanbankersassoc iation, which will determine which videos advance to the second round of national judging. Videos will be judged on their quality, message and content and the criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules. To learn more about the “Lights, Camera, Save!” contest, visit www .lightscamerasave.com or www .epnb.com/lightscamerasave.

More than 100 items went up for bids on Feb. 1. The silent auction is open in Garden Spot’s Village Square Indoor Park at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, and the link to the online auction is available www.gardenspot village.org. The event will close in-person and online on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Silent auction hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Those visiting the auction in person must wear masks. Proceeds will go to the Benevolent Care Fund.
