CV students immerse themselves in “The Little Mermaid”
BY JEFF FALKNot sure if theater programs specifically set out to foster camaraderie or if it simply occurs unintentionally. But friendships can cause on-stage chemistry, create emotionally invested performers and make productions better.
Conestoga Valley High School’s upcoming performance of “The Little Mermaid” indirectly explores the importance of friends, both on and off the stage. It’s a message that can be easily relayed to the audience.
“Seeing the growth is so cool, just seeing how far the students have come,” said Vincent Whitman, the director of “The Little Mermaid.” “I think it’s the idea of the theater program being a family and having everyone connect with common interests. Since I’ve been the director, the camaraderie has just continued year after year. Theater has brought them together.”
Tickets can be purchased before the show by searching for “Conestoga Valley High School” at www.showtix4u.com or at the door on the day of the performance.
There will also be a free senior citizens performance of “The Little Mermaid” presented on Thursday, April 4, at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
“Being a member of the drama department has brought me so many new friends and has been an amazing experience.”
“Students come into the program not knowing what to expect,” said Whitman. “I tell them that I’m going to push them to be better than they ever thought they could be. I want theater to take them on this journey that exposes their emotions and presents them in a way people will be able to understand and connect with.”
“The Little Mermaid” will be presented on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 6, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m. in the Conestoga Valley High School auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.
“The students are finding themselves in the show and finding their instincts,” Whitman continued. “I encourage them to find their passion and move in that direction. This show lends itself to standing up for what you believe in.”
CV’s presentation of “The Little Mermaid” involves 64 students25 cast members, 10 pit musicians and 29 members of the stage crew working with costumes, sets and
technical duties. The cast includes senior Rianna Pazo as Ariel, sophomore Connor Lewis as Prince Eric, senior Terence Rosario as King Triton, sophomore Philip
Le as Sebastian, freshman Gwen Unruh as Ursula, senior Maya Harner as Flounder, junior Steelton White as Scuttle and senior Evan Zimmerman as Grimsby.
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to

“Being a member of the drama department has brought me so many new friends and has been an amazing experience,” said Rianna. “I am grateful for this opportunity and am so happy to be a part of this year’s show.”
“We had the cast to put on ‘The Little Mermaid,’” said Whitman. “We had the vocals; we had the singers. You go into a show having a few ideas who you might cast. But once we had auditions, we picked a couple of students who hadn’t been in the theater department before.”
Auditions for “The Little Mermaid” were conducted in December, and students were afforded an
opportunity to review the script over the Christmas break, before rehearsals commenced in early January. The cast and crew have been fine-tuning the performance after school and during evenings over the last three months.
“During that week of the shows, there are a lot of nerves,” said Whitman. “Everyone is trying to be on their game. They’re working on their lines, spending time on their own. They’re fully in at that moment, which is really cool to see. They’re enjoying it, laughing, but they’re also super nervous. During that last show on Sunday, they go all out.”

A bright patch
BY ANN MEAD ASHIn 1990, Fairmount held its first auction and chicken barbecue. From the beginning, handmade quilts, made by area sewists, have been a part of the event. “In the first year, a quilt was donated, which was what started the auction,” reported Swailes. “Then in the next couple of years, people would donate completed quilts (to be sold).”
According to Swailes, about four or five years after the first auction, the initial Quilting Days was held. Quilting Days brings together stitchers who live in the area surrounding Fairmount, which is located on a plateau in Ephrata high above the surrounding farm fields, to stitch beautiful quilts, which are later sold to benefit the organization’s Sharing Fund.
auction and chicken barbecue, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland.
Quilting Days brings local residents together
in community, and the bright shades of the quilts and the soft voices of the women chatting as they work provide an interlude during the cold and often dark days of February.
This year, Quilting Days took place in Fairmount’s Farm Crest Community Room, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on Feb. 17, 20, and 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. More than 200 quilters gathered over the three days. During that time, they stitched quilt tops on up to a dozen racks. A total of 10 quilts were completed, with another four nearly completed.
“The unfinished quilts will be set up in a quilting area for Fairmount residents to complete,” explained Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator and a quilter herself.
“(Residents) will probably (be working on one quilt at a time) most of the time between now and auction day.”
All the finished quilts will be sold at the 2024

Quilting
from pg 3
Quilting Days attracts many Fairmount residents and local families. Swailes noted that groups of sisters were gathered at some quilt racks.
When Swailes visited the gathering on Feb. 21, she noted that this year’s quilt tops are especially colorful. She recalled that black and gold were predominant colors last year. “This year there isn’t a decisive color scheme,” noted Swailes. Indeed, for 2024, a variety of hues, including pink and green, light blue, and cranberry and white were present. “I think what makes a really great quilt is contrast (in the colors),” said Swailes, pointing out a quilt that used black pieces to frame brightly hued squares.
As she walked between the rows of sewists, Swailes

pointed out the small plastic containers sitting on top of the material. “When you quilt, you keep a little plastic cup on the quilt all the time to keep extra threads in,” said Swailes, who observed the many quilt patterns and talked to the stitchers about their work. Often a pattern goes by more than one moniker or combines the names of a few different patterns. One group called the quilt the members were stitching an Irish Chain Postage Stamp, but then noted that the real name was Rainbow Around the World. One black, white, aqua, and teal quilt pattern was called Kaleidoscope, and a cranberry, black, and white quilt done in applique and emblazoned with the words “I Am the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley” was called Log Cabin Star. “There’s one over here that I find interesting because it’s kind of whimsical,” noted Swailes, pointing out a double wedding ring patterned quilt done in black, tan, white, and cream. Another quilt sported a pattern called Boston Commons.
Fairmount’s Sharing Fund, which aids residents who have exhausted their finances, has an annual budget of $2.8 million. Fairmount, a nonprofit retirement community founded in 1968, is located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their childrenCharlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down.
There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer.
“We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive
stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”
