Supporting families of children with special needs

“Wewant to work ourselves out of business,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministry with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI). “We want to equip others to be able to do this because we can’t be everywhere.” To that end, HVMI offers a variety of support and training services to churches, educators, and especially families of children and adults with special needs.

Once a month, HVMI gives parents of children with special needs an opportunity to spend time in the company of others who understand through the Parents In Progress (PIP) support group, which meets at the HVMI offices at 600 Chestnut St., Ephrata, every second Monday beginning at 7 p.m. PIP is facilitated by HVMI founder Tim Sheetz, and it is open to parents of children of all ages with a range of disabilities. Sheetz has been working with families since 1973, and he is acutely aware

of their needs. “As the child grows older, who will take care of the child?” noted Sheetz. “That is a huge (concern).” He added that the group gives parents a safe space to talk. “The parents understand each other, and they can feel free to say what is going on and feel supported,” he said.

To help families, educators, and church leaders work with children with ADHD and autism, Kelley presents “The ABCs of Bringing Out the Best in Children With ADHD,” a three-hour seminar that is not strictly focused on children. “It covers anyone with ADHD,” she said. “It’s for people … who need the really practical tips of what to do in daily life to help include children with the challenges associated with ADHD.”

She also pointed out that the program may be useful to Sunday school teachers and ministry workers, who may not have training in education. “There are basic teaching techniques that can be helpful to anyone in an instruction setting,” she said.

Sheetz said that reaching out to faith leaders has long been the mission of HVMI. “The idea of the ministry was to alert the church to the need,” he said. “The church may

Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, remembers the successful bingo event the organization held in 2019. “At that time that was our largest fundraiser to date,” said Breece, who noted that the event garnered funds to help raise the 16 puppies that are trained yearly to become service dogs. The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.

The UDS bingo fundraiser will return to the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 16. Doors will open at noon, and the first game will start at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through Friday, April 14. Each ticket includes 20 games. Players must be age 18 or older, and tickets are limited. Food and beverage items will be available for purchase.

not be equipped to handle the needs of a child with a disability.”

However, a welcoming faith community is what families who have members with special needs may

need most. “I (have) asked, ‘What is the greatest need?’” shared Sheetz, who noted that the answer is “acceptance” by both extended and church families. He pointed out

Building a legacy

Servants Inc. has its roots in a mission trip that founder and CEO Trent Davis took to Guatemala around the year 2000. Davis wanted to share his experience with others, and he began coordinating mission trips, but that was just the beginning. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. Flooding in York County in 2010 brought the program home. Servants now has a presence in Adams and Lancaster counties as well. In Lancaster County, Servants is mostly active in the

ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. Servants Inc. completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022.

To raise funds to help area families in need, Servants holds a spring gala. The 2023 event, which will be the fifth for the organization, will be held on Friday, April 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Stone Mill Inn, 305 S. Broad St., Hallam. The event will include a cocktail hour, a sitdown multicourse meal, videos, live and silent auctions, and live music, and Davis will give an update on the work of the ministry.

“Order Up!”

Being a waitress is a demanding and sometimes thankless job.

It requires attention to detail, multitasking skills and patience. It also demands physical stamina, a can-do attitude and a nurturing mindset.

Serving is not an occupation for everyone, but Julia Daughtery pulls it off quite nicely.

A resident of Akron, Daugherty has been a waitress for eight years, the last 12 months of which have included serving at Knight and Day Diner, 3140 Lititz Pike, Lititz.

“I feel like it takes a certain type of person to be a server,” said Daugherty. “You have to be an outgoing person. Obviously, you want to be kind to your customers. But you’ve also got to have a backbone. You have to have a lot of patience. You have to have a nurturing character.”

Typically, Daugherty works 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Knight and Day Diner, serving both the breakfast and lunch crowds. She stressed that those who

frequent diners are generally a different clientele from the customers who go to bars or taverns.

“There’s definitely a difference in the people who come into diners,” said Daugherty. “My clientele is usually a lot of older folks who have lived here for years. It’s a lot of businessmen. Honestly, I get a lot of out-of-town people. I have regulars who come in to see me. I like creating relationships with people.”

But serving is also a learned skill, and through experience comes wisdom. Daugherty works hard, but she also works smart.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot from where I started,” said Daugherty. “I used to be pretty shy. Sometimes it’s hard to be one person (when things get busy). I work better with chaos. I have patience and I’m flexible.”

Holy Week Schedule

Calling Stone Mill a “gorgeous” location, Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants, said that gala activities changed somewhat after a virtual event was held in 2021. “2021 was the first time we introduced an auction,” said Cotton, who noted that an auctioneer hosted the event and videos were shown. Both those features became part of the live auction in 2022. Because the cocktail hour was successful last year, the 2023 gala will begin with wine and select craft beers. “(During that time), people talked to each other and looked at the silent auction items,” said Cotton. “It was more relaxing.” Cotton pointed out that the food at the event is often a highlight and that attendees often comment on how good it is. The auctioneer who handled the virtual fundraiser will be the event’s master of ceremonies. “The program is pretty light,” said Cotton, who noted that the videos are created with the audience in mind. “People might not know everything about Servants, so the information that’s presented gives people an introduction to what we do and some of the impact that we have and want to continue to have on the communities that we serve.”

Silent auction items will include a number of themed baskets. Live auc-

tion items have traditionally included a beach house vacation at the Outer Banks and a catered meal by a Servants employee. “He is an excellent chef,” said Cotton. “He makes barbecue and smoker (items).” Other auction items will include a Mission Destiny helicopter ride, a catered brisket dinner, a bourbon tasting party for eight, a three-night weekend mountain getaway, and use of an Ocean City, Md. condominium. Cotton pointed out that one item will be a private dinner for eight at the Stone Mill Inn. “It includes a five-course dinner paired with wine and prepared by an exclusive culinary team,” he said. While the gala has traditionally been held inside the Stone Mill Inn, this year a heated tent will serve as the dining area. The use of the tent will expand the number of people who can attend to about 175. Cotton said that the organization hopes to raise $50,000 to be used to “minister to the spiritual and physical needs of hurting people in our local community, across the USA, and around the world.”

Information about tickets and sponsorship opportunities may be found at www.servants.org/gala. Readers who have questions may email sponsorship@servants.org or call 717-378-0336.

Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago. “So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade bag, they can get it,” she shared. “That has been well received.”

Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences. Breece described a tasting tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese,

crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine. “We have a 50minute traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit. Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece

also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steelers, and Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.

Charlie, the black Labrador puppy that posed cooperatively with bingo cards for this article, began his training at 11 weeks. “Normally puppies start our program at 8 weeks,” said Breece, who noted that in spite of starting a little late, the pup is doing well. “(Charlie) has been a shining star,” she stated.
