In memory of Ryan

Golf fundraiser planned

Before Ryan Gardina was killed in 2004, he was working as a patient care assistant in the intensive care unit of Lancaster General Hospital. Prior to that, he was a medic in the U.S. Navy. After Ryan died, his friend Amanda Yost approached his mother, Susan, about starting a scholarship in his memory. “You have to do positive things to get through things like (losing a son),” Susan said.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/PAFamily TravelFair and www.instagram.com /pafamilytravelfair

Ryan had been attending HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in hopes of later matriculating at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. An annual scholarship in his name was first established in 2005 to benefit a nursing student at the school.

“We did a lot of fundraisers at first,” said Susan, who, with Ryan’s father, Jim, recalled the donations received from family and friends and the sub sales that were held. Three years ago, a golf tournament was started to raise money for the scholarship. The 2023 Ryan Gardina Memorial Golf Fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 19, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Prize holes will include the longest drive and closest to the pin, and mulligans will be available for purchase.

Book release to feature speakers

Swiss Pioneer Preservation Associates will host a book release and signing at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m. The event will launch the book “Documents of Brotherly Love: Dutch Mennonite Aid to Swiss Anabaptists, Volume III, 1712-1784,” which contains 239 documents and over 200 illustrations. This concluding volume continues the story of Dutch Mennonite aid to the Swiss Brethren in Bern as well as in the Palatinate, where the government attempted to increase the group’s taxes and limit its

growth. It also describes the motives and experiences of the Swiss and Palatine Mennonites who immigrated to North America, many of whom settled in Lancaster and Berks counties.

John L. Ruth will speak on the history of the project that resulted in the three volumes of “Documents of Brotherly Love.” Harold R. Kurtz will describe the persecution of the Swiss Brethren from the time of Hans Landis to the 1710-11 deportation from Bern. Ed Kline will present the efforts to gain the release of the six Anabaptists who were sent by the Bern government to Sicilian galleys from

1714 to 1716. Edsel Burdge will speak on the situation in the Palatinate in the 18th century that prompted many Mennonites to migrate to America.

Copies of all three volumes of “Documents of Brotherly Love,” along with copies of the “Hans Landis” book, will be available for purchase.

Admission is free. A freewill offering will be received to benefit the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the local history.

For more information, contact Raymond Zimmerman at 717-354-7139.

Hess nets five goals in loss to Elizabethtown

If the blooming flowers and trees, not to mention tons of pollen, were not enough to indicate that spring has sprung, we can turn to high school sports and see the full complement of spring sports taking place.

Two games do not make a season and that is a good thing as the Lady ‘Bucks lacrosse team stumbled out of the gate with losses to Elizabethtown and Manheim Township keeping CV winless. The March 24th setback to E-town was a difficult one.

Jamie Handwerger turned

away 14 shots but that was not enough as the Lady Bears posted an 11-8 win. Sophia Hess paced the attack with five goals and one assist while Isabella Miller (1g) and Danae Ulrich (2g, 1a) took care of the remaining offense.

March 28th brought Manheim Township to town with the Lady Blue Streaks posting a 20-0 win. Handwerger had seven saves in the loss.

The boy’s lacrosse team kicked off the season on March 21st, topping Central Dauphin 10-8. Soren Stoltzfus had seven saves in the win while Jeff Fisher led the offense with four goals and

one assist. Noah Nolt and Tommy Perella added two scores each with Isaiah Sensenig and Hunter Silvaggio rounding out the scoring with one goal each.

Conestoga Valley remained outside the L-L for their March 23rd contest. The result was an 11-8 loss to Red Lion where another seven Stoltzfus saves were not enough. Fisher and Silvaggio netted two scores each with Fisher adding three assists. Nolt, Justin Carson, Tyson Zwaska and Bryce Zwaska all finished with one goal in the loss.

Up next was a March 28th trip to Neffsville that resulted in an 11-6 loss to Manheim Township. Stoltzfus faced near constant pressure, resulting in 19 saves. Fisher topped the offense again with two goals and three assists while Tyson Zwaska provided the backup with two goals and one assist. Nolt and Sensenig split the two remaining goals.

BASEBALL

Despite a small battle with Mother Nature, the Conestoga Valley baseball team has completed three games in the early going, posting a 2-1 mark with wins over Garden Spot and Octorara offsetting a loss to Cocalico.

The tiff with Mother Nature moved the Octorara game from March 24th to the 29th but the delay did not matter, CV enjoyed a 4-0 victory. Brendan Bossert moved to 2-0 with six scoreless innings while Jude Thompson

covered the final inning, adding two strike outs to Bossert’s seven. Evan Wilson paced the offense with two hits and three RBI while Evan Lapp went hitless but still pushed a run across for the Buckskins.

Bossert’s first win of the season came on the 22nd in a relief appearance when CV topped Garden Spot by a 6-5 final. He covered the final three innings, taking over for Thompson who had relieved Owen Wilson after his four inning start. Bossert allowed just one hit to go with four K’s while Fisher and Thompson combined for nine strikeouts and all five Spot runs.

Sandwiched between the two wins was an 8-6 loss to Cocalico on the 28th. Luke Landis took that loss after covering the final two innings and the last of the Eagle runs. Fisher got the start but was chased after three innings and six runs leaving Caden Miller to get the ‘Bucks out of the fourth. Wilson, Lapp, Miller, Landis, and Jackson Esbenshade all finished with one RBI.

TENNIS

While CV’s other spring sports are just getting started the boy’s tennis team is roughly a third of the way through their season, sporting a 4-1 mark. That lone loss came to Lampeter-Strasburg back on March 20th and

snapped a quick two match run CV had going. Those two wins came over Ephrata on the 15th and Elizabethtown on the 16th.

The Buckskins shook off the L-S loss with a 4-3 win over Warwick on the 22nd. CV did their heavy lifting in singles play with Yuji Wenger, Michael Horst and Nolan Miller all posting wins. Wenger and Horst also added a doubles win to help secure the team victory.

Conestoga Valley had no trouble with Governor Mifflin on the 24th, cruising to a 7-0 win. Fabian Heine and Boro Kristic joined Wenger, Horst, and Miller as singles winners. Wenger and Horst added another doubles win, as did Miller and Eli Lefever.

VOLLEYBALL

Moving over to the hardwood for volleyball, the Buckskins sit at 1-1 countering a loss to Warwick with a win over Wilson. The season opening win over the Bulldogs started well with a 25-15 win, but Wilson battled back and pushed CV in the second game leaving the ‘Bucks with a slim 26-24 win. It was more of the same in the third game, but CV was able to close out the sweep with a 25-22 victory. Drew Hultstrand finished with 32 assists while Carson Hoover had 14 kills and seven digs.

The loss to Warwick on the 28th was by the same 3-0 final only CV ended up on the wrong side of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 finals. Hultstrand finished with 14 assists and Tardibuono six kills. Samson Pha added seven digs and two aces.

SOFTBALL

Back outside to the softball diamond, the Lady Buckskins are 1-1, following a season opening setback opposite Penn Manor with a win over Cocalico.

Rhiannon Henry was in the circle for both games, taking the hit in the 1-0 loss to Penn Manor on March 21st despite racking up 11 strikeouts. Henry did allow six runs over her seven innings on the 29th but her 16 strikeouts were more than enough to allow CV to slip out of Denver with a 9-6 win. Alexa Freeburn went 4-4 with two RBI while Tori Rhoads needed one hit to collect her two RBIs. Henry and Emma Wanger added one RBI each.

Truist Foundation awards grant to college

The Truist Foundation awarded Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) a $150,000 grant to support its technical education training programs for low-income adults. These programs prepare people for entry-level technical jobs and are offered through the college’s Workforce Education and Development Center (WEDC), at Tec Centro, the bilingual education center run by SACA on Chester Street in Lancaster.

The TSCT Short Term Skill Up Fast Workforce Development Program focuses on serving unemployed or under-employed people, immigrants and refugees as well as single parents - with priority for single motherswith the intent to help them build career pathways to economic mobility reskilling/upskilling by offering direct, short-term educational services and preparation for entry-level jobs in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, industrial maintenance, and welding and computer software information systems.

A majority of the $150,000 will provide partial- or fulltuition scholarships for lowto moderate-income students and necessary supports to ensure their success and completion of the programs. These supports include services to lift barriers to stu-

dents’ receiving an education, including child care, transportation, emergency services, and career navigation services.

SACA will provide matching funds to double the investment and the number of scholarships available to students.

Short-term training programs in high-demand fields allow these adults to get fulltime jobs, leave public assistance, build wealth, and improve the economies of their communities. In addi-

tion to providing technical training so people can obtain family-sustaining jobs, the partnership between TSCT and the Truist Foundation seeks to provide talented employees to support industry needs for mid-high to high-skill workers and to leverage financial support through other funding sources, in this case SACA, as part of building collaborative community partnerships to strengthen workforce, education, and economic stability.

Responding to the live event industry’s growth and its goal of next generation workforce development, Rock Lititz is adding an education center to its 108-acre campus.

Lancaster-based Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) and United Kingdombased Academy of Live Technology (ALT) at Production Park, formerly Backstage Academy, have partnered to create the ALT at Rock Lititz. The new ALT and the partnership

among Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the ALT at Production Park was launched at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival at the British Music Embassy on March 13 by Lee Brooks, CEO of Production Park; Rachel Nicholson from ALT; Andrea Shirk, president and CEO at Rock Lititz; and Carissa Massey, provost of PCA&D.

The partnership represents a global scale collaboration, melding the strengths and

Construction has begun on the ALT at Rock Lititz facility, which adjoins the existing large-scale rehearsal spaces, Studio 1 and Studio 2. The structure includes 22,400 square feet of classrooms, production space, digital labs

and a students’ common area, with the option of expanding to the second and third floors to meet future needs.

A fourth rehearsal studio is also included in the structure, which will accommodate artists who perform at clubs, theaters and small amphitheater venues, and will provide PCA&D students with hands-on experiences in production technologies.
