Carving Out His Niche BY ANN MEAD ASH
hris Lubkemann’s tiny carvings are something to crow about - a majority of them are roosters or other fowl. But Lubkemann also creates letter openers, tiny brightly colored flowers, and a variety of animals, including a few unusual creatures reminiscent of Dr. Seuss characters. During the winter months, Lubkemann carves in a back room of his Lancaster home, but from April through October, he spends three days a week at the Amish Farm and House, 2395 Covered Bridge Drive, Lancaster. Lubkemann - who can carve flowers from a toothpick - is no lightweight in the craft, having authored close to 20 books on the subject, many published by Fox Chapel Publishing in Mount Joy. The child of missionaries, Lubkemann was born in Brazil. His earliest memory of carving was of making dental picks in the jungles of Peru at age 7, but he did not begin to whittle seriously until he was given a summer assignment to help an older pastor in Glendale Springs, N.C., while still in

a unique opportunity to use his carving skills to connect with people. “One of the national symbols of Portugal is the rooster,” he said. “So I taught people how to carve these.” Lubkemann gave classes at the folkart museum and was spotlighted on television, becoming known as the Rooster Man. In 1987, the couple relocated to Lancaster County, where eventually Lubkemann opened his shop at the Amish Farm and House. He has also done demonstrations at malls, at schools, and for civic clubs. For 25 years, he was a regular feature at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. In his own home, Lubkemann displays roosters he has collected, alongside games he has invented, including his Team Maze, which requires ultimate cooperation between two partners to complete. “I have been carving for 55 years,” said Lubkemann. He shows no signs of putting down his knife anytime soon. Volunteers Sought For Convoy

Volunteer clowns are needed to put smiles on the faces of attendees at the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in Manheim.
“Being a clown is about building relationships,” said Andrew Imhoff, whose clown name is Roland. Imhoff has been a volunteer clown with the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy for a number of years. “I love building relationships with kids and being able to see children happy no matter what they’re going through.” Clown organizer Amy Nolt, who goes by Harmony when she is wearing her black vest adorned with musical notes, would love to see at least 25 volunteer clowns join her See Make-A-Wish pg 11

college. “The mountain people ... carved little roosters and pheasants,” said Lubkemann. “The minister ... knew how to carve these things.” Lubkemann quickly got himself a country store pocketknife and started to learn. “I was tickled because I always enjoyed working with wood,” he said. “My first rooster ended up looking like it got into a fight and lost,” he recalled. “I kept working at it.” Back at college in South Carolina, Lubkemann thought he could help pay his tuition with his carving. “I decided to try to be self-employed by ... carving roosters to sell to students or whoever,” he said. “I was probably the first college student in U.S. history who literally whittled away most of his senior year to pay for it.” After graduating in 1967 with a degree in biblical education, Lubkemann attended graduate school and then got married. He and his wife became missionaries in Portugal in 1972. “My wife is an incredible puppeteer,” said Lubkemann, who built puppet theaters for programs the couple would put on in parks, at marketplaces, and outside churches. adviser of the organization, realized KPETS did not need all the space it was were renting for offices, she began looking for a new home for the organization. In the past, Gerth had worked at a Lancaster County retirement community. “I thought it would be neat to have an organization like KPETS on a long-term care facility campus,” said Gerth. In the spring of 2021, she contacted a friend who works at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, to see if there was any space available. The friend connected Gerth to Adam Gardner, director of campus services, and on Jan. 28, KPETS moved in. Gardner reported that the day care that had occupied a building near the edge of the campus had vacated in October of 2020. “We weren’t looking for tenants, but it was also space that we weren’t going to use internally,” said Gardner. “It was a perfect space for (KPETS).” Not only is the space the right size, the building is nearly surrounded by a dog park used by Landis Homes residents. “Just having (KPETS) on the campus is a perk,” said Gardner. “They are close to home, and the service is available for our residents and our team members.” Gardner added that in mid-February, KPETS held a meet-and-greet with Landis Homes staff members so they could get a “little pet therapy over their lunch breaks.” Gerth’s 8-year-old golden retriever, Kody, quickly made himself at home in the new surroundings, and he happily greeted visitors, including this reporter, as they arrived at the new office. Gerth noted that she hoped volunteers and their dogs would soon be visiting on a regular basis. “We have 340 volunteers,” said Gerth, who added that some volunteers have registered multiple dogs

with the organization. KPETS is currently seeking more volunteer dogs and owners. “There is a charge for (volunteer) orientation and insurance,” said Gerth. “We have a screening process (volunteers and dogs) go through.” The screening process includes an orientation, a group evaluation, and two visit evaluations. “We want to make sure the dog is enjoying (volunteering),” pointed out Gerth. “Just because the person wants to (volunteer) doesn’t mean the dog wants to.” “I am happy to have (KPETS as) part of the community,” said Gardner, a dog owner himself, who noted that he thinks one of his dogs might enjoy taking part in the program. “(Having KPETS here) sets Landis Homes apart a little bit.” Readers who would like to know more about KPETS may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387). What Goes Around …
Hymn Sing
BY ANN MEAD ASH
On March 26, the Lititz Historical Foundation treated area residents to a presentation dedicated to the Rocky Springs Park Carousel. Eileen Gregg, author of “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel,” and two invited guests visited the Lititz Public Library to speak about the history of the carousel and efforts to resurrect the merry-goround in a Lancaster location. Rocky Springs Park was a fixture in Lancaster from 1899 to 1968. Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, welcomed Gregg, who said she was happy to see interest in the carousel. “This is an unusual kind of history book,” Gregg began, noting that she sees the

work as a story that needed to be written while people who have memories of Rocky Springs Park are still living. To make the presentation interactive, Gregg asked who had visited the park, ridden on the rides, or met their spouse near the carousel. She noted that the book contains a chapter dedicated to a love story of a couple that met at the carousel. Gregg said that the book includes more than 230 pages, 52 chapters, and 122 photos - 112 of them in color. She noted that the book features before and after restoration pictures of 12 of the merry-go-round’s animals. The six sections of the book cover the history of the carousel, which was placed near the beach in Rocky Springs Park in 1899. The carousel was built by the Dentzel family, which had

originally begun making carousels in Germany. During its time at Rocky Springs, the carousel converted from steam to electricity and was sold to Joseph Figari. The park closed in 1968 and reopened briefly in 1979. In 1983, carousel owners Kim Figari and husband Tom Wolf moved the carousel to Lake Lansing Park in Michigan, where it remained until it moved to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., in 1989. In 1999, the carousel was transported to Lancaster by volunteers and purchased by the nonprofit Rocky Springs Carousel Association. “The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel is a national treasure,” said Gregg, who noted that other chapters focus on the carousel animals, the organ, catching the brass ring, and Tom Wolf’s 20-year history with the ride. Guest speaker Noreen Sweeney told the group how she and her late husband, Mike, visited Dollywood in the fall of 1998, where they met with Kim and Tom. Several months later, Tom visited the Sweeneys to say that the carousel was leaving Dollywood and that he wanted it to return to Lancaster. Mike contacted Lancaster’s then-mayor, Charlie Smithgall, who supported the project, and the Friends of Rocky Springs Carousel was established with Mike as presi-

dent. A fundraising campaign purchased the carousel. At the recent presentation, Dee Lynch, who was active in the fundraising campaign, told of how hard area residents had worked to raise funds to bring the carousel back and restore it. Speaking about the book and the mission to restore the merry-goround, Gregg noted, “The final chapter is called ‘The Challenge Presented by the Rocky Springs Carousel.’ We have a goal to see this beautiful carousel operating once again in its home area.” More information about the book may be found by searching for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.

The season opener came on the 26th with CV topping Middletown 9-2 in Witmer. Rhiannon Henry picked up the win with a complete game and led the offense with two hits and three RBI. Henry the pitcher racked up 11 strikeouts with four walks with Henry the hitter using two singles to drive in those three runs. Conestoga Valley survived a sixrun seventh inning rally from Governor Mifflin on the 29th to hold on for an 8-7 win. The Buckskins evened up their record on the 29th with a 3-0 win over Penn Manor. Kenji Pha dished out 27 assists with Carson Hoover collecting 16 kills in the 25-17, 2522 and 25-21 win. Camden Clapper added three aces and Kyle Hutchinson 11 digs. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team found themselves on the wrong side of both their 2022 games, falling to Wyomissing and Ephrata by a combined 30-8. The bulk of that damage came in the 14-2 season opening loss to Wyomissing on the 25th. Jamie Handwerger managed 10 saves, but the CV offense was unable to get going with Jordyn Hironimus and Sophia Hess scoring one goal each. The Lady Buckskins were able to pick up their offensive production on the 29th but still fell to Ephrata by a 16-6 final. Hess recorded a hat trick while Hironimus, Annika Bredeman and Danae Ulrich split the remaining three goals. Allyson Stauffer stepped in the circle and stopped five shots. TRACK The track teams kicked off their season on March 29th by hosting Cedar Crest with the girls falling 114-35 and the boy’s 97-49. As the score would indicate, wins were hard to find for the Lady Buckskins. Mae Linder and Grace Lapp accounted for the two solos wins before joining with Veronica Santamaria and Kylynn Frankford for a 1600m relay win. The boys’ side was able to cobble together six wins, with four of their five solo wins coming in the field. Emmanuel Gitonga nabbed the 800m, while getting help from Joe Castronova, Micah Aldrich, and Carson Miller to capture the 1600m relay. Zach Stoudt claimed two of those four field wins, topping both the long and high jump fields. Cameron Swinton added a triple jump win while Ismael Camacho finished with a pole vault win.

shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Last year, these stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries. “The first MCC Thrift shop to open in Lancaster County was the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland in 1976,” said Roland Anye, thrift shop coordinator for MCC East Coast. “Mount Joy Gift & Thrift and Columbia ReUzit Shop have been operational since 1977 and 1978 respectively.” As Anye explained, shopping at an MCC Thrift store benefits both the buyer and the recipient of MCC funds. Shoppers can pick up clothing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated

to MCC. “Donations from the thrift shops are designated to ‘where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. Deb King, national thrift shop coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed
to make new clothing,” she said. To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East Coast. “Sign up to receive a weekly sustainability challenge that helps our planet,” she explained, adding that participants will also have a chance to win an MCC Thrift gift card each week. Visit https://thrift.mcc.org/50/challenge to sign up. “When I had small children, I frequented thrift shops and yard sales because it was the only option that fit into our budget,” said King. “While that is still the case for many families, I am encouraged to see individuals who have disposable income choosing to shop at thrift shops. … Thrifting is now practiced by people of all ages and income levels.”

heim, perhaps better known as Obie the clown. Amy soon convinced Mark to join her at the Convoy, and he chose a golfing theme for his clown outfit to go with the name Teed Off. Their first daughter clowned with them at the tender age of 9 months. Imhoff performed magic tricks and twisted balloon animals for a few years before meeting Ober at a church event. “A lot of people think about (professional clowns) when they hear ‘clowns needed,’” said Imhoff. But he said no experience is necessary to volunteer. Imhoff likes to keep his clown costume simple, choosing a hobo outfit because of the minimal makeup and uncomplicated clothing. He also feels the simplicity of his look makes him more approachable. Both Mark and Imhoff noted that they enjoy the clowning experience. “Every year, I have more fun than the year before,” said Mark. “It’s a whole new story every year,” added Imhoff. Amy emphasized that people of any age can be volunteer clowns. Whole families are welcome to clown together, and children may clown as long as a parent or other adult is with them. Amy will hold classes on Saturdays, April 9 and 23, to teach volunteers about makeup and costumes along with a little clown etiquette. Readers who are interested in volunteering to clown for Make-A-Wish may email nolt138@gmail.com for more information.

when the Make-A-Wish Convoy returns to its typical format after a two-year absence. For 2022, the Convoy will be held once again at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim, where it will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. The carnival will begin at 8 a.m., and the trucks will leave at 1:30 p.m. Event activities for the public will include a chicken dinner and live auction. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children facing life-threatening illnesses, and the Truck Convoy provides funding for more than 75% of the wishes granted by the Philadelphia/Delaware/Susquehanna Valley Chapter every year. Make-A-Wish clowns may begin as early as 8 a.m. by taking part in the carnival. Some clowns do tricks, but others simply brighten the faces of the Make-A-Wish kids. “If you can put a smile on a kid’s face for 30 seconds, that may be the smile he needs for his whole life,” said Imhoff. About $10,000 of the funds raised by the Convoy is collected by the clowns, who grab buckets and follow the trucks in cars driven by volunteers. Amy noted that she will need one car and driver for about every four clowns who are sent out to collect. “Anybody can be a clown,” said Amy, who first began clowning as part of a college ministry. She connected with Make-A-Wish nearly 30 years ago when her husband, Mark, met up with Dennis Ober of Man-
